Heart smart foods have become the norm in my house.  I have scary-low blood pressure, and my doc says it makes me far less likely to have a heart attack or stroke.  However, my husband is one of those string beans that can consume 5000 calories per day.  If Captain Consumption is going to grow old with me, the meats are going to have to be lean, the vegetables plentiful, whole grains a constant and cheese…just an occasional indulgence.  This next show is in the Heartland; do you think they eat any heart-healthier there?  Let me know…

JUROR:  Kim Casebeer was born and raised in Kansas, and still lives in Kansas. She draws her inspiration from the simplicity of the Flint Hills, an area of wide open ranch land. These days Kim also feels at home painting in Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, Wyoming and Texas.  Kim received her Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from Kansas State University in 1992.

Learn more about the Heartland Show!Kim’s work has been featured in numerous magazine articles.  She has exhibited in many prestigious national competitions, winning many awards, including Best of Show at the 2010 Nomades del Arte National Invitational Exhibit held at Southwest Gallery.  Kim has also particpated in museum shows in Arizona, Wyoming, Montana and Oklahoma.

AWARDS: Best of Show: $1,500.00, 2nd Place: $1,000.00, 3rd Place: $ 500.00, 3 Awards of Merit: $ 100.00 each, 3 Honorable Mentions &  1 Purchase Award.

Mural Project

 

Attitudinal Healing Connection (AHC) a non-profit organization in West Oakland is looking for local artists to paint the Hoover Corridor Neighborhood’s first large scale mural project. Using the theme of super heroes, the murals are going to be designed by local middle and high school students and are intended to uplift and positively transform the neighborhood.

“Over the course of three years we plan to complete six murals under freeway overpasses includingSan Pablo Avenue, Market Street, West Street, and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. These murals will serve as a gateway to West and Downtown Oakland and can become a key way in which our community is perceived. This is a call for local artists interested in helping to revitalize the Hoover District inWest Oakland.” –from the Call for Entries (downloadable below)

Her art is a world of allegories, metaphors and multifaceted associations. She thinks that it’s not important how an artist creates his work. It can be created with any tool and any medium, but it should speak for itself and convey a very special mood. It should need no explanation, no elaboration and no apologies. It can be very aesthetic or the opposite of it. For Dina, the most important thing  is freeing the imagination.

AWARDS:  The Julia Margaret Cameron Award will be given to 12 women photographers which will be invited to exhibit (and sell) their work in a very selective collective exhibition in Paris during 2013, honoring one hundredth year of the birth of Robert Capa, co-founder of Magnum Photos and famous war photojournalist. WPGA will take care of the framing and matting, as well as all gallery expenses.  A catalog will be printed, and all 12 awardees will receive one free copy.

SALES:  Exhibitors will receive 40% of the sales, 20% will be reserved for the gallery/organizers, and 40% will be donated to a charitable organization selected by the awardees.

Eating solely by candlelight is not romantic.  When the world is teaching its young boys and girls romantic guestures, the candlelit dinner is among the cliches reinforced repeatedly by television and print ads.  Yes, candlelight is lovely and flattering, but not SOLELY candelight.  I want to see what I am eating, or about to eat.  I want to enjoy the presentation of the food.  I DO NOT want to accidentally put a forkfull of wasabi in my mouth by accident.  This next Call COULD be all about candlelight.  What’s your bright idea?

Water Street Studios in Batavia, IL announces a Call for Entries to its first of many juried, themed shows, “Illuminate.”

The Illuminate exhibit, juried by Frank Maugeri, will explore light in all of its forms and is open to conceptual interpretation: mechanically lit pieces are welcome, as are depictions of luminescence, as well as conceptual pieces.

ELIGIBILITY:  Open to all artists.

MEDIA:  All media may be considered.  However, this will be a dimly lit show, with the gallery’s house lights off and sporadic track lights on.

Her photographs and writings have been widely exhibited, and published in numerous books and articles.

Stephen Weaver is an award winning photographer with over 35 years experience making images of the natural world. Formally educated as a geologist, Steve combines his scientific knowledge with his photographic abilities to produce stunning images that illustrate the beauty of the structure and composition of the earth and its natural systems.

Learn more about the Rocky Mountain Art Book Project!The Rocky Mountain Art Book Collection, is an exhibition project (with suggested themes) where the participants will receive a blank sketch pad to do whatever they please artistically over the course of four months. This project will be localized to communities throughout the Rocky Mountain region but also encouraging those across the country or the world to participate. After completed, participants will then submit their art books to be on display in an exhibition that will take place the third week in December of 2011.

ELIGIBILITY:  The project encourages anyone from anywhere who want to be a part of it, to participate.  Anyone meaning, anyone: kids, parents, students, seniors, writers, artists, dreamers, wanders, the guy next door, the crazy cat lady, the ski bum, the couch surfer, anyone.

MEDIA:  All forms of mediums are welcome.

DEADLINE:  The distribution of the sketch pads began mid-September and are ongoing.  Sketch pads are due to be returned Janaury 9, 2012.
