a CITRUS dream

Oranges trigger holiday memories. So many different holidays, both secular and sacred, are celebrated during the month of December. And regardless of the holiday, you’ll always find someone whose memory of that holiday is triggered by the smell of oranges. My mother said that when she was a child, Christmas was the only time her family could afford citrus of any sort. I have incorporated citrus into my entire sense of winter because it is the only time I can find super sweet clementines. It is an odd sort of passing of the baton.

Now that most of the holidays have past, it is time to kick it into high gear. I am attempting another 30 paintings in 30 days. (I don’t hold out a lot of hope of finishing that in grand style.) Meanwhile I have 3 commissions & 3 shows that I desperately want to enter. I am no longer a member of the cult of busy. I don’t celebrate or glorify it. But I have certainly bitten off more than I can chew. How do you rank your art priorities? When you figure that out consider this Call.

SOUPER bowls

I plead guilty to taking my eating utensils and dishes for granted. Because of my love for the art of plating food, I’ve always owned solid white functional dishware. My mother is a “collector” of flatware and hasn’t allowed me to pick my own, EVER. It is bestowed upon me on occasion without request or explanation. We all have our burdens, ha.

Now I am married to a commercial production potter (120+ pots a day & NOT pictured here), and suddenly the world of dishware is my oyster. Did you know you need differently sized and shaped bowls for salad, cereal & pasta? As I said, we all have our burdens, ha. I love eating out of the bowls my husband has thrown. Every once in a while he comes home with a “one off” just for me because he thought it looked like it was “meant for me”. *swoon* I’ve been trying to convince him to enter this show because I love this venue. It isn’t restricted to a literal interpretation, so be sure to investigate this opportunity.

I make the best quiche in the world. Not hyperbole. (The quiche pictured here is not of my making.) You can say what you want, but I will not be dissuaded, ha. It is NOT, if fact, what I was hoping for as a ~~supper~~ super power, but it is what I got. My husband has decided that I am allowed to have a big head regarding this one topic; however, I suspect he’s just humoring me for fear his quiche connection will dry up before he learns my secret techniques and/or ingredients. Bwahahahaha.

This next Call indicates No Big Heads. Do I still qualify? Just kidding. I like this next Call because it ticks off a lot of great mileposts for many of us. It is an academic show, a resume builder, and it is in Alaska, a state missing on many of our resumes. It is almost apple season ’round these parts, and I cannot wait. I grew up thinking Red Delicious apples were “apples”, and I wasn’t a fan. Not until I became a teenager did I understand there were many other varieties. Not until I moved to Tennessee did I realize how many varieties there really were. Now, I live within a few miles of an orchard with more varieties than I imagine I’ll never get around to trying. I appreciate being able to know about my food, about how it is grown and harvested and sold, and how those funds support the lives of my neighbors.

That connection to my food is what made me connect to this exhibit about agricultural awareness. I know that many of you are hoping to add a museum show to your resume, and this is a great opportunity to do just that. Your work doesn’t have to be literal or necessarily botanical to fit this curatorial them. Show them what you’ve got.

KALE yeah!

How many kale lovers are among you? I read an article recently that suggested that so many people dislike kale because of its bitterness that there are varieties being bred to tame the flavor. Apparently people want to like kale but don’t know how. Tell me that’s not a metaphor for the divisive nature of politics in the world today. Wow.

I’ve made my peace with kale. I found a balance that allows the bitter to be a complement to my diet. I get the health benefit, the flavor, and the value of cheap-but-trendy green veg. I have not, however, made my peace with the politics of hate. We can co-exist, but that requires embracing our differences, and that is among the reasons I promote the Embracing our Differences call each year. If you’ve ever entertained the idea of adding public art to your resume, here’s an opportunity. The theme is open to really wide interpretation. You only need to take a look at their gallery of previous winners to understand that Coexistence is truly looking for YOUR point of view. Testimonials and recommendations are great, but my taste buds choose for themselves. As a welcomed side-result of writing these posts, I receive a significant amount of unsolicitied recommendations for brands of food that are meant to change my mind about tofu, kale & collard greens. And, I diligently try most to of the suggests, just in case. On occasion I muse to myself, “that wasn’t half bad”, (never about tofu though), but the important thing for me is to not get stuck in a rut or trust a single encounter as the definitive one. Did you know that I avoided asparagus for 20 years because of my experiences with the canned variety as a child. I missed 20 years of green tree goodness. Never again. So, send me your food suggestions, and I’ll send you my art experience suggestions. Here’s one now.

Yesterday, I offered a Call that chose random winners for supplies in a specific media, but today I offer a Call with a juried winner of cash open to wide array of media. More accurately, this is a purchase award of sorts. You do not have to submit the work that will be exchanged for the $1000 –that can be negotiated later. I’ve never been a fan of frozen green veggies. The flavor often reminds me of those little peas in one-dollar pot pies, not entirely natural. But there is a glaring exception. Edamame. I love those little beans. I like them steamed in their pods, then dipped in a little dumpling sauce (thai chili paste & soy) then sucked from their little green shells. It isn’t pretty, but I am hooked.

Another perienniel favorite that is all about the color is the BWAC color show. This is a great space that has grown to become Brooklyn’s largest artist-run organization with over 250 members. Your dollars have power; spend them wisely. I love this organization & its mission.

COLD complication

The school year returns soon. Many of you know I have a kid in college, so his impending exit will mark a change in my house like so many of you with students. My grocery bill will shrink, and his eating habits will change. At home, my son eats whatever is put in front of him. At school, he can choose to fuel himself on pizza and coffee 6 out of 7 days. I choose to believe not, but a quick glance at the bucks he spends on ‘bucks reveals the ugly truth… his degree will be sugar & caffeine-fueled.

What gets you through a work day? Do you have a routine or a vice? Is there a difference, or is the label just a way to guilt yourself into less-frequent indulgence? After a hard day in the studio recently, I picked up my keys and headed out, making a quick pitstop in my husband’s studio to let him know I was going. “I’m headed to the liquor store. Want anything?” I asked. “Day that good, huh?” *blink blink blink* “How about I work on dinner while you’re gone?” Smart man. This next Call is for those of you whose memory of late night projects & exam cramming are still directly behind you.

CALL for ENTRIES: Unique Abstractions

The notion of eating healthy is an abstract one. Even putting ethical concerns aside, there are health benefits (and disadvantages) to embracing vegetarianism, veganism and even raw diets. Sugar is the devil, but artificial sweetners are differently malicious. An excessively fatty diet can lead to heart disease but when coupled with an near absence of carbohydrates puts the body in ketosis that effectively treats diabetes in many. Chocolate and red wine and coffee and kale, all abstractions of a healthy diet.

In art, abstraction takes a lot of forms. At it’s broadest, abstraction is work that is non-representational. But, that begs the question, non-representational of what? From that we get non-figurative & non-linear styles that are often included in surrealism, dadaism, cubism, fauvism, suprematism, art informel, neo-plasticism, de stijl & others. This next Call wants to see all of your abstract creations. My heart lies with abstraction, although I find reactions to it frustrating. What’s your experience? Are you insulated enough not to hear the voices of those that would dismiss the non-representational? My mantra is ‘process not product’. Excerise your muscle memory. Lose yourself in process. It works for me. What works for you?

I’ll take the PIE to go

There are a lot of customs surrounding death & food. Most people are familiar with people trying to feed the living by bringing the ubiquitous casserole to the living, but I’ve recently learned that many cultures feed the dead by leaving food on graves, from leaving a pie on the gravestone at Easter to pouring wine on the burial site. I don’t have a real understanding of the symbolism (if you do, LMK) behind the traditions, but I love the love it takes to want to feed someone pie and wine, even after death. THAT is devotion.

My work has centered around human bones for a while now. Bones indicate a pattern for me, both for the living and the lost. I prowl cemeteries with a sense of joy, not mourning. Gravestones are monuments for the living of the best in those no longer able to create new memories. They are, without doubt, often erected out of obligation, but even in obligation, they document a lifespan as an accomplishment, no matter how brief. If they include additional details, they are rare ugly, even if the truth is ugly. This next Call speaks to me because if offers the opportunity to react to loss from a place of truth, not obligation or memorialization. I am also excited about an open opportunity in Atlanta, a rarity.
