Do you stop eating at a certain time at night? I have relapsed into late night snacking, and now I have a rock in my stomach every night when I am already struggling to sleep. Ahhhh. I go to sleep later, so I get up later, so I get into the studio later, so I get less done. If I could close my mouth, I could make more art. I think I’ve heard that before, ha.

I have been away from posting for a while because I have also been having a hard time keeping my mouth closed in this volatile poitical climate. It is helpful for me to remember that not everything is about me, and sometimes I just have to walk away. It is with that in mind that I remind you that this Call is not for all of you. I normally refrain from publishing regional calls; however, a significant number of AAAD subscribers live in this region. So, this Call isn’t for me, but it might be for you. The group’s mission is to preserve and expand the vision of their beloved founders by supporting emerging, mid-career and established artists of African descent.

When’s the last time you ate a candied apple? I haven’t had one in a while either. Every year I am tempted at the Tennessee Valley Fair to at least have a caramel apple, but I chicken out every time. I mean, I’m not afraid of the sugar-draped fruit, but it seem like a commitment. It’s not like I can eat it with a knife and fork in deliberate portions; you have to sink into it teeth first, knowing you may end up wearing it face, fingers, clothing and all. I’m not ready.

This next call is a worthy pursuit on its own, but it is also a measured solution to the art fair. When’s the last time you contemplated participating in an art fair like Art Basel? One option is to venture out on your own, which can be very expensive & risky if you aren’t in the right place for that opportunity. Another possibility is going as a part of a group or gallery, which still involves costly production like framing and shipping with no guarantee of sales. If you’re not ready for either of those options, this call from Create! Magazine gives you an opportunity to reach the Miami art week audience without the commitment to a booth. Following degrees in Law and in History of Art, Hossack studied at Christie’s and at The Guggenheim in Venice. She set up her own gallery in Windmill Street, Fitzrovia, in March 1988. Hossack’s business, despte the economic climate, has not only survived, but thrived. From 1993-7, Hossack served as the Australian cultural attaché in London, initiating literary links between Australian and British writers and organising a series of exhibitions of Australian art in London.

CALL for ENTRIES: Winter Solstice

Sweet potato pie is a family favorite. As we head into fall and the the pumpkin-spice vs no-pumpin-spice debate rages on endlessly, I’m over hear making sweet potato pies from fall all the way into winter. Sweet potatoes are available year ’round, take much less time to cook from scratch than sugar pumpkins and require far less added sugar. I know you think you don’t like them, but try them. Fall in love with them and you can be eating their beautiful orange goodness, from scratch instead of can, for the entire winter.

This next Call is centered around the mood and ambiance of winter and the work that it inspires. Winter tends to be productive for me, but it often produces darker work, literally and metaphorically. Are you affected by the change in the season? This show’s call deadline is in September, so you’ll either need to pull work from last winter or predict the oncoming season. If you’re looking for a museum show for your resume, investigate Marin MOCA, it is one of my favorites.

Testimonials and recommendations are great, but my taste buds choose for themselves. As a welcomed side-result of writing these posts, I receive a significant amount of unsolicitied recommendations for brands of food that are meant to change my mind about tofu, kale & collard greens. And, I diligently try most to of the suggests, just in case. On occasion I muse to myself, “that wasn’t half bad”, (never about tofu though), but the important thing for me is to not get stuck in a rut or trust a single encounter as the definitive one. Did you know that I avoided asparagus for 20 years because of my experiences with the canned variety as a child. I missed 20 years of green tree goodness. Never again. Yesterday, I offered a Call that chose random winners for supplies in a specific media, but today I offer a Call with a juried winner of cash open to wide array of media. More accurately, this is a purchase award of sorts. You do not have to submit the work that will be exchanged for the $1000 –that can be negotiated later. The school year returns soon. Many of you know I have a kid in college, so his impending exit will mark a change in my house like so many of you with students. My grocery bill will shrink, and his eating habits will change. At home, my son eats whatever is put in front of him. At school, he can choose to fuel himself on pizza and coffee 6 out of 7 days. I choose to believe not, but a quick glance at the bucks he spends on ‘bucks reveals the ugly truth… his degree will be sugar & caffeine-fueled.

What gets you through a work day? Do you have a routine or a vice? Is there a difference, or is the label just a way to guilt yourself into less-frequent indulgence? After a hard day in the studio recently, I picked up my keys and headed out, making a quick pitstop in my husband’s studio to let him know I was going. “I’m headed to the liquor store. Want anything?” I asked. “Day that good, huh?” *blink blink blink* “How about I work on dinner while you’re gone?” Smart man. CALL for ENTRIES: Summer 2019 Print Issue

COLD complication

For years, popcorn was the ultimate summer food. Popcorn with a hint of olive oil, parmesan and cracked black pepper was my idea of the perfect snack food. Then, there was some weird shift for me. Stovetop popped was too greasy. Microwave-popped was always singed. Air-popped was always tough. I just quit eating it — for nearly two years. I missed my daily snack favorite, but was resigned to the absence of popcorn.

Then one day Facebook started feeding me ads for an Amazon listing a silicone popcorn popper (not a sponsored ad) for the microwave. I’m guessing I did something online that Google’s algorithm decided meant I needed popcorn, and, well, it was right. That $10 product arrived, and it was ridiculous, a floppy, ridiculous concept. It came without instructions. I searched and found an equally ridiculous video. Holy popcorn! It is soft like stove-topped but without that queasy overly greasy aftertaste. So what’s the lesson? No lesson, except maybe… all hail Summer.

CALL for ENTRIES: Cover Art

a HUNGRY summer

I’ve had my head down working and planning and growing. How about you? Spring always makes me take a second look at my process, while summer makes me kick into production mode. What are you doing to support your work? I am contemplating meal kits and taking a day off from the studio. I know that doesn’t make a lot of sense at first glance. But lunch is the bane of my daily schedule. Just when I hit a creative stride, it is time for some sort of meal prep for lunch. I live in a house with folks with dietary restrictions, and everyone eats lunch at home. So, I’ve been exploring options. Take out takes just as much time to pick up, and delivery is cost prohibitive. A lot of meal kits are labor intensive despite arriving with pre-prepped foods, and many of them are the wrong quantity or, again, cost-prohibitive. I’ve found one (Hungryroot & no, this is not sponsored) I think I am going to give a try. The ingredients look good, the sizing is right, the cost is manageable. I am excited about getting lunch off my plate, so to speak.

One of the other big stumbling blocks for me is juggling my boring-but-necessary household tasks with my work schedule. Finding time. I find it hard to work creatively when I am encumbered with a list of non-creative tasks to do at home. My husband more than carries his half of the burden, but someone still has to do my half, ha. So, I’ve been practicing taking one day off from the studio and trying to cram all of the household tasks I can into that day –laundry, appointments, meal planning, grocery shopping. It is a work in progress. I’ll be sure to give you an update before summer’s end. In the meantime, I’ve had two acceptances for publication in two different magazines, and I am inspired by the positive attention it has drawn to my work and added to my social media reach. So, I am offering a few publication calls this week. I am running close on deadlines, so don’t delay in submitting your work.

CALL for ENTRIES: Meltdown

It is no secret that I’m a little, well, let’s call it cheese “focused”. But we all have our priorities. After being seperated by an ocean for 4 weeks, my husband and I stopped by a local dairy farm less than 24 hours after reunited… to buy cheese. Priorities. Cheese glorious cheese. A few days later, I made summer squash au gratin also known as “squash makes all the melted cheese a legitimate choice”, au gratin for short. Melted cheese means I’m home, ha. Think of it as my oven’s welcome mat. It is the best kind of meltdown.

I have been known to indulge in an epic meltdown of a personal nature on occasion. The last U.S. presidential election put me in an ugly place for weeks. Every insuing attack on civil rights, environmental regulations, access to health insurance & the ability to govern the workings of my own body have warranted their own meltdowns. My work has changed. My life has changed. I worry about becoming numb to the suffering of others, to the loss of agency, to the restrictions on the ability to speak freely. Where is this planet’s population headed? While I was in Scotland recently, I was regularly engaged by locals about American politics. People want to understand what is going on in the United States. I couldn’t explain. I can’t explain. So, I just keep working. Right now, THAT is what I can do.

don’t paint with FISH SAUCE

Every week I manage to make a handful of Insta-worthy, perfectly staged lunches & dinners, completely by accident. More often, I conjure tasty dishes that are weirdly, mostly shades of brown due to carmelization, excessive de-glazing and a love for soy, fish, Worchestershire & all other sauces, brown & salty. As you might imagine, the brown food pics, outside of coffee & walnuts, aren’t really winners on social media, ha. My work is not brown or salty, but similar & not…

A few times per week I manage to pull off a perfectly Insta-worthy image of my work in progress –always at an off-kilter angle with short focus to blur unresolved issues and just the right light to allow a contrast-y filter to make me look like a rock star. It is deceptive and born out of equal measure of insecurity and social media pressure to look like I always have everything effortlessly under control. I have guilt, but not. I don’t like feeding into the notion that studio life needs to be glamourous, but I also don’t like exposing my vulnerability underbelly to nameless, faceless critics. Then enters this Call. As you might imagine, I read A LOT of Calls, and I like options for art publication. But THIS call is different. This call wants to see the mess. Finally, there is an option to show studio life, work-in-progress specifically. I think that this is the kind of aspirational we can feel good about –always real, likely messy & unresolved. Seeing yourself represented as an artist is important. This Call is the brainchild of one of our previously Featured Artists, Robyn Thompson. It is a project of her course work while working toward her Master of Arts in Social Practice, making this a great opportunity to lift up ourselves AND one of our very own.

CALL for ENTRIES: 47th Int’l Show

I cheated on my husband with shrimp tacos. He’s contact allergic to shellfish, and on the rare occasion I eat a meal without him, my radar is firmly set on shrimp. I feel guilty while eating them, like I’ve cheated, and then have to go through a hazmat-style sterilization process afterward. But, shrimp.

I had that shrimp-y luncheon with my a friend, an accomplished realist painter. We spent time talking about our plans for the next weeks and months. She paints prolifically and noted, “I haven’t even been looking at Calls because I can’t do anything until Fall”. Between work for galleries that represent her, a couple of invitational shows and a museum solo show that comes down this week, she can’t lose focus. Realizing that kind of focus has been my goal for months, and I am beginning to see results, but it requires tuning out the things that don’t serve my focused goal.
