MOUTH

I dislike the semantics of having an “open mind”.  Doesn’t that, quite literally, mean that anything can go in and out?  I don’t want that for my mind any more than I want that for my menu.  I simply will not abide even a “devil’s advocate” argument on some subjects anymore because for me, wrong is wrong.  I feel the same way about food.  I’ve tried an impossibly large number of foods over the years.  I will not even entertain the possibility of tasting some foods anymore.  Grubs might be fantastic or even taste like my favorite stinky cheese, but I won’t be eating them, EVER.  Call me closed-minded AND closed-mouthed in this respect.  Luckily, this next show is wide open.  Investigate…

The creative are often food obsessed.  I am not alone. Food is a common experience for us all, but I find that creative people tend to purposefully try to indulge all the senses at once–musicians, writers, dancers AND visual artists.  So how perfect is this next Call that centers around a slightly food-obsessed musician.  If you don’t know his work (Eggs & Sausage is one of my favorites, but Chocolate Jesus was infamously controversial), do your homework…you won’t be sorry.

Check out of this Call for Entries from the Arc Studios & Gallery (San Francisco, CA) for Like a Tom Waits Song.  This is one of the most unique themes I have ever published.  Fascinating…

This open call is for all artists who have found themselves deeply moved, enraptured, bemused or inspired by Tom Waits. Has his music ever transported you to a dusty desert town or an abandoned train yard or a glowing, gritty neon rainy city street filled with steam? Listening to his music do you come away from the experience with a flash of inspiration embodying his lyrics? Like Tom Waits, do you tell tall tales and spin yarns with your work?

ELIGIBILITY:  Open to all US artists

MEDIA:  Sculpture, painting, drawing, photo, printmaking, ceramics, assemblage, collage, mixed media, fiber art  & artist books. This exhibition cannot accept jewelry, video, film, performance art, installation and works requiring an external electrical source.

The range of work includes paintings, works on paper, photography and sculpture.

Famous dishes and food fads are not a new phenomenon.  Consider Hangtown Fry, named after Placerville, CA (then known as Hangtown), where it is reported to have been invented in the 1850s.  A bacon & oyster omelet, yep.  Although it originated in Placerville, it was really made famous years later by San Francisco, an hour from Placerville, from hence the oysters where usually shipped.  Yes, I managed to bring it back around to locally-sourced ingredients.  This next Call is also famous and from San Francisco.  Peas in a pod…

for your thoughts?

Yes, we have all heard that carrots are good for your eyes.  But, the truth is that carrots contain beta carotene which the body converts to Vitamin A which is good for eye health.  But, if a honey and ginger glaze is not enough to get you to eat carrots, never fear.  Leaf greens, oily fish like tuna, eggs, nuts and even citrus will help keep your eyes healthy as well.  This next call is more interested in your vision than your actual eye sight.  But, take a look for yourself…

I live with culinary diplomats.  Never ones to forsake a food altogether, my family tries to find the silver lining to every food basket.  They have mastered words like “earthy, piquant, herbaceous & grassy” to avoid speaking ill of my food experiments.  As a result, I cook with a sort of anything-goes-abandon that produces both masterpieces & snacks turned down even by the dogs.  This next Call wants the masterpieces that come from your anything-goes, devil-may-care, art abandon.  Give it a shot…

CALL for ENTRIES: Juxtapose

Enter the Featured Artist Contest today! PEAR-ING
it down

I have given up my fruit with mean ban. That’s right–for years, I have had a problem with fruit and meat together.  I tend to prefer fruits a little chilled, and I prefer meat at least room temperature, but preferably warm.  As you might imagine juxtaposing the two only highlighted their differences.  But, I’ve come around.  As I have come to eating local (and organic, when possible) fruit, I am starting to prefer it room temperature. So, now oranges, apples, pears and more are showing up in my curries and stirfrys more and more often.  Juxtaposition is all the rage for this next Call too.   Great theme…

Check out this Call for Entries from the Darkroom Gallery (Essex Junction, VT) for Juxtapose. The entry fee at Darkroom is always low ($24), and they will provide free matting & framing if you work in their standard sizes. Take a look…

*Editor’s Note: Please make sure to let them know that you found the Call on ArtAndArtDeadlines.com. I have a soft spot for this gallery, and I want them to know they have our support…

Modern Translation by Juror Kyohei AbeCALL for ENTRIES:
Juxtapose

The composition of
two or more elements
within a photograph,
emphasizing either the
similarity or dissemblance
between them.

One of the most effective ways to express ideas photographically is to compare and contrast subjects visually. Placing contrasting elements side-by-side adds interest to a photograph and holds the viewer’s attention. Opposites such as: large and small, light and shadow, happy and sad, smooth and rough, new and old, horizontal and vertical, still and motion. Each one of these examples draws the viewer in, makes them curious about the story, why is that person happy while the other one is sad? How did that cat managed to get in amongst all of those dogs? Why are these two seemingly unrelated objects set in the same frame?

Learn more about the Darkroom Gallery online!Explore complex or simplistic incongruity, opposites and contradictions, layered imagery, and observe the addition and subtraction of context. Counterbalance can marry elements by placing them side-by-side, above or below each other, or layer them in the foreground, middle-ground and background just as slow shutter speeds can show the disparity of moving objects compared to static ones.

Explore the uniqueness
found in apposing
colors, textures, characters
& objects.

Juxtaposition plays a crucial role in creating expression in each of these areas and the photographs’ overall message and allure – so crucial that we feel it deserves an exhibit all it’s own.
