My 14 year old TAKES HIS LUNCH everyday.  No joke.  He is allergic to wheat, and public school lunches, aside from having wheat hiding everywhere, are not to his liking.  I have ruined his ability to eat fake food.  So, his lunches are often a little like homemade Lunchables™ with a little of this and a little of that.  But the last time I had to fly, I encounter the most bizarre concept–Lunchables™ for adults.  Well, not literally; at least I don’t THINK Oscar Mayer® is making in-flight foods.  Maybe a little tapas lunch of your own making will help you tackle this gravity defying Call.  Take a look…

Check out this Call for Entries for Take Flight from the Kiernan Gallery (Lexington, Virginia). The entry fee is very reasonable, and I’ll bet you already have lots of work that works with this theme…

Humans have always desired to take to the skies. Fascinated by flight, we construct machines to propel us into the air; from kites and hot air balloons to supersonic jets. We admire birds and costume ourselves with wings, imagining what it would be like to fly without assistance.

For Take Flight, The Kiernan Gallery seeks
images of and about defying gravity.

GOAT

I have a significant number of friends that simply won’t cook for me.  They assume, based on my writing, that I might be too discerning.  It is ridiculous and unfounded, of course.  I eat everything (except wheat).  But many of them have read enough of my posts to feel safe if they always include a stinky cheese.  And, a handful of them have read my posts closely enough to know that goat cheese is proverbial gold.  If you only get one chance to make a first impression, goat cheese is always the gold standard.  This next Call gives you an opportunity to see if your work is the gold standard.  Please take this chance…

Check out this Call for Entries from Yamana Gold (Toronto, Ontario) for Passion to Perform.  There is NO entry fee, but you only get one shot–one entry.  I usually give gentle nudges to my readers, but this time, I’m just going to say it.  No fee, phenomenal prizes, possible purchase awards AND they pay to ship the work.  Please do your homework, take a chance, and give it a shot…

Because you know I’ve been a foodie for so many years, it should come as no surprise that my weight has fluctuated for decades.  I have been everything from a size 8 to a size 24 over the years.  I have given up carbs, given up fat, eaten only fruit, eaten only soup… You name it, and I’ve tried it.  Nothing ever worked for long.  Then I was forced to quit eating wheat, and my weight stabilizes.  Go figure.  I’m not a size 8, or a 24, but I haven’t gained or lost more than 2 lbs in 8 months.  This next Call is all about YOUR figure.  Take a look…

Light is that which compels a photograph into being: shifting, glowing, luminous, obscure or brilliant.

The medium of photography brazenly defined: How our tools, environs and subjects respond to light.  Sometimes the light plays a more prominent role in a photograph, sometimes as a supporting actor and sometimes as the protagonist itself.

Low light, bright light and every stop in between. Light can be luminous & rich, or a stark spotlight, it can wildly dance, or softly edge darkness and cast shadows. Light can reflect and sparkle or be blinding and disarming. Natural light vs. man-made light sources: sunrises and sunsets, moonlight and neon light!

Feeling too lazy to make it from scratch, I decided to BUY a ready-made mix for hot chocolate last week.  Then I read the label.  Damn the labels.  I just cannot knowingly consume another artificial sweetener.  Acesulfame Potassium is in almost every mix out there–even the non-diet ones.  So, I went home and pulled out my recipe.  It has 4 ingredients: milk, cocoa, sugar & vanilla.  So, even feeling lazy, I was better off taking the alternative approach.  Just like this next call…

Alternative process photography today is a blend of contemporary ideas and historical techniques. Many photographers have rediscovered some of the forgotten early processes, bringing a unique style to present-day image making. Incorporating these processes into their work involves both skilled craftsmanship and a creative blending of new and old. For our third annual alternative process exhibition, The Alternative Approach, The Kiernan Gallery seeks photographers who use handmade and historic photographic techniques in their work.  19th century photographic processes dominate this genre.

Some people truly excel at cooking out in the elements.  I’m not talking about pimped out BBQ grills on your 400 square foot deck.  I’m talking about those folks that can rub two sticks together to make fire or bury things in the coals that turn out like gourmet treats.  I am not that girl.  I’m not really a fan of living in the elements–period.  I mastered s’mores & “Angels Riding Horeseback” (cheese dogs) in the Girl Scouts, but I got that badge by the skin of my teeth.   I CAN admit the elements ARE beautiful, and this next Call will help you prove it.  Great theme…

Five Elements

Photograph the beauty of nature, five elements provide the foundation for our entire physical world.

Earth, and everything on it, is the product of different combinations of the five basic elements: earth, water, fire, air, and space.  Everything found in our world is unique because it contains a varying ratio of these five elements.

Whether walking headfirst into a gale of wind or digging our hands into the soil, we possess an inherent familiarity with the elements.  All organic and inorganic substances are combinations of them, be it a time-polished rock or a shiny piece of plastic.  A multitude of spiritual practices revolve around these five important pieces of the universe.
