“What are you doing this weekend?” Kellee Mayfield

I am having a tough day, not horrible, not life-altering, just tough.  My mind is elsewhere, and I’m kinda wishing my body were too.  Because it is a quiet day in the studio (code for I’m too tired & unmotivated to work), I decided to do a little paperwork, jot down some notes about some ideas that I can’t shake & scroll through Instagram hoping not to lose a half a day.

I came across today’s Artist of the Day, Kellee Mayfield‘s Insta feed, and almost every post that I clicked said, “What are you doing this weekend?”.  I found somewhere else to be, Chateau d’Orquevaux, a French artist residency, to be precise.  Mayfield spent some time there in the Fall and completed this series of work that transported me.  There’s a food to her Insta feed with which many AAAD will appreciate as well.  So, consider this my invitation to share… what are YOU doing this week?

While I always want to visit an artist’s website, I am sending you to her Insta feed @deltamoxie to give you the same glimpse that gave me the boost my weekend needed.

Thanks to AAAD Artist of the Day, Kellee Mayfield for the trip to Chateau d’Orquevaux!

chuh-chuh-chuh-CHIA

I’ve often spoken of my emotional eating & closeted love for junk food.  I occasionally comfort myself with the notion of artisinal junk food like lovingly, hand-made beautiful doughnuts.  But, truth be known, I have an ugly Totino’s habit.  I admitted here in writing once about 5 years ago, but as I push spinach salads and chia seed smoothies like a health food pimp, I like to believe that no one holds me accountable for my addiction to frozen pizza.  (You can find the complete ingredient list here, OMG, assuming I can convince you I only eat the cheese variety. *lying*)  I have faith in my better instincts, but I admittedly have worse ones too.

A lot of people have gut instincts about shows.  Some artists are completely turned off by the concept of online shows.  Some artists only want to show where they can hand-deliver work.  I try to evaluate opportunities based on how they fulfill MY current needs.  I don’t need resume fluff right now, so I am submitting to fewer shows and just trying to get the work DONE. I get asked about online galleries all the time, and whether or not they are scams.  The easy answer is “sometimes”.  You & I both need to submit work to shows that WORK for us.  So what are the pros to online shows?  I like them as a great way to test new, experimental work.  they help me see how I stack up against other work in a more objective atmosphere than the bubble of my already engaged fan and peer base.  Online shows can drive traffic to your website and give you organic social media posts.  Online exhibits can force you to create themed work that gets you out of rut or unstuck.  Depending upon the venue, they can help you reach a different audience.  And, there’s the prize money. Is this opportunity right for you?  Only you can know.  I have faith in your better instincts.

I live in black bear country, and hyperphagia is coming to an end soon.  Hyperphagia is the time of year when the bears gorge themselves in preparation for their winter “hibernation”, although black bears don’t really hibernate, per see. THEME:  STILL LIFE “can be a very personal view of an artist’s daily life. . . . The magic of still life imagery is that they [sic] can show us a new way of looking at the ordinary objects around us. Once they are placed into a specific arrangement and then captured in paint, ink, pastel, photography or any other medium – the objects take on a whole new meaning. They are imbued with a life beyond the ordinary. Their existence becomes recorded in time. The objects chosen for a still life painting often have a special meaning, either on a personal, cultural, societal, religious or philosophical level. The themes surrounding the artwork often provoke introspection and reflection in the viewer. The way that the objects are depicted can evoke a wide variety of emotions“. –art-competition.net

BREAKFAST eggspert

I miss breakfast.  I have been complaining about being sick of eggs for 10 years, but I’d give anything for an egg sandwich right now.  My residency provides the basics so that we can make our own breakfast –eggs, bread, butter, yogurt, granola.  But, you know what happens when a chef prepares every lunch & dinner you eat?  In my case, I’ve become too lazy to make my own breakfast outside a bowl of granola. *sigh*  This next Call if for your impressions of the light of day… not necessarily what you eat a dawn, ha.  Take a look.

Sometimes you just have to be open to trying new foods.  So, when handed a nopales taco by a friend, I thought “why not”.  Nopal is a common name for the pad of a cacti and sometimes refers to the prickly pear fruit as well.  Fleshy & a little tart, the nopales in my taco really worked as a meat substitute.  I’m not sure why I don’t eat more cacti.
