RICE-A-RONI

Famous dishes and food fads are not a new phenomenon.  Consider Hangtown Fry, named after Placerville, CA (then known as Hangtown), where it is reported to have been invented in the 1850s.  A bacon & oyster omelet, yep.  Although it originated in Placerville, it was really made famous years later by San Francisco, an hour from Placerville, from hence the oysters where usually shipped.  Yes, I managed to bring it back around to locally-sourced ingredients.  This next Call is also famous and from San Francisco.  Peas in a pod…

PEARLS

of wisdom

I have a long-standing addiction to pasta. More accurately, I am addicted to that slightly drowsy, completely relaxed feeling I have when I finish a beautiful Italian meal. My friends have been trying to get me to read Wheat Belly, but I’ve resisted for fear that I would end up having to give up my favorite pasta, whole wheat couscous. I cannot bear the thought. So, this next Call comes from San Francisco which has nothing to do with couscous, but the last time I made a Rice-A-Roni segue, I got email for weeks. So, my stream of consciousness led me to couscous. I know, random. Regardless, don’t miss this next Call…

Check out this Call for Entries from Gallery Photographica (San Francisco, CA) for the San Francisco International Photography Exhibition to be held at Studio 17 Gallery. The entry fee can be as low as $25; the juror is excellent, and the prizes are great. This one might be perfect for you!

new taters

Does it feel like you eat the same thing day after day.  Me too, somedays.  To break things up at my house, we challenge ourselves.  Last month it was a huge increase in veggies with a concentration of stuff we never buy–like spaghetti squash and kale.  This month, it is a reduction of dairy and meat.  It isn’t necessarily about the benefit of a particular change so much as the results of having to think about food differently.  We end up eating crazy concoctions that we might never have otherwise tried.  This next Call has an open theme, but it has to be new (as of January 2011)Time to make a change, folks…

Check out this Call for Entries from Gallery Photographica (San Francisco, CA) for the New Images Photography Awards.  The entry fee is a little higher than the average, but the juror is good and the prizes are great.  This one might be perfect for you!

There is more to San Francisco cuisine than Rice-A-Roni.  The last time I used the rice/San Francisco food reference, I got more than a few emails from readers that thought it was a bit on the shallow side.  My apologies.  San Francisco is noted for being home to some of the best restaurants in the US, like Perbacco (no, they are not a sponsor). So, if you find yourself looking for a dinner reservation before the opening of the show for this Call, consider it recommended.  Next…
