The concept of ‘trans’ seems to be a significant influence in the postmodern art world—where borders, dialogues, discourses and meanings have become increasingly unstable and negotiable. How have these changes and instabilities been documented in contemporary art and design practices? How does contemporary art engage with issues of transformation, translocation, and other ‘trans’ issues pertinent to identity, culture, politics, aesthetics, and everyday life?

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists.

MEDIA: All media, including photography, painting, sculpture, printmaking, performance, new media, video and emerging media.

The Second Space Gallery invites you to enter the juried exhibition entitled What Comes After Modern?: Architecture in the Course of Human Events to be held in Spokane, Washington during December 2011.

ELIGIBILITY: All artists over 18.

THEME: Work that succeeds will try to answer the theme question by establishing a connection between people and the buildings we inhabit.

MEDIA: Two-dimensional works in the following categories: Photography, Computer Renderings, and Painting. Also juried on technical proficiency in the chosen medium, visual impact and unique or original interpretation of the subject.

DEADLINE: November 2, 2011

NOTIFICATION: November 12, 2011

ENTRY FEE: $12 per image entered, maximum of 5 entries per artist, maximum entry fee of $40.

JUROR: Meg Partridge is the Director of the Imogen Cunningham Trust, the organization established in 1975 to preserve and promote the work of Partridge’s grandmother. Please visit the Trust’s website at www.imogencunningham.com to find out more about the life of this fascinating photographer. Partridge also administers her father’s photographic legacy, The Rondal Partridge Archives. Among her projects are a film profiling her godmother entitled Dorothea Lange: A Visual Life, and a documentary about her father called, Outta My Light: Photographer Rondal Partridge. Partridge has worked as an executive producer, producer, director and project manager for many companies. Raised in Berkeley, California, Partridge received a BA in Theater Arts and Arts Administration from Antioch College and an MA in Film from San Francisco State University.

When someone hums while eating, its a pretty good sign they like their food. I had never witnessed anyone hum and eat until my son was about 3 years old. Everytime he would sit down with his favorite foods, he would absent-mindedly start humming quietlyto himself. He was completely unaware. We still call it “dinner music” on the rare occasion we hear it. My husband and I never made any real effort to stop it (even in restaurants) because, well, let’s face it…food makes me sing too, if only in my heart. Flow Art Space in Minneapolis, Minnesota announces a call to artists for The Art of Music to be held in the gallery from February 15 – 25, 2012 to coincide with the 2012 Minnesota Music Educators Association Conference, which is attended by over 1,300 music educators and nearly 6,000 people in total. The gallery will promote the show, host an artist reception, and feature art on its Website.

ELIGIBILITY: US artists at least 18 are welcome to submit.

MEDIA: Any art forms that reference or depict music in some way, including instruments, sound art, paintings, drawings, sculpture, fiber, etc. All 2D and 3D art will be considered. Video artists must first contact the gallery.

Project Basho presents ONWARD Compé 2012, a juried photography exhibition exclusively featuring new and emerging photographers with envelope-pushing work.

ELIGIBILITY: ONWARD Compé is open to individuals who do not currently have a contractual agreement with any gallery for gallery representation. Previous ONWARD Compé selected photographers are permitted to enter the competition.

MEDIA: ONWARD Compé 2012 has an open theme and any photographic medium including but not limited to historical processes, traditional silver printing, chromogenic printing, and digital processes can be submitted for consideration.

DEADLINE:
Entries must be submitted online by 11:59 PM EST on November 28, 2011.

NOTIFICATION:

ENTRY FEE: The entry fee is $40 for up to three images, $50 for four, $60 for five, and $100 for 7. A maximum of 7 images will be accepted per artist. Friends of Project Basho will receive a $10 submission fee.

JUROR: Based in San Francisco, Todd Hido‘s affecting and ambiguous landscapes and portraits explore loneliness and anonymity in American suburbia. His award-winning monographs including House Hunting (2001), Outskirts (2002) and Roaming (2004) have garnered critical acclaim and established him as a important voice in contemporary fine art photography. His work has been the subject of numerous exhibitions in commercial galleries and museums and is part of many prestigious collections including the Guggenheim Museum, George Eastman House, Whitney Museum of American Art, and more.

AWARDS: Photographs selected by Todd Hido will be exhibited by Project Basho’s gallery in Philadelphia in from February 9 – March 25, 2012. All chosen work is also displayed in a web gallery and a selection of artists will be featured through our media sponsors. Selected photographers are also eligible for a host of awards and prizes:

I become periodically addicted to snack foods. Recently I’ve been fixated on Hot Buffalo Wing Pretzel Pieces from Snyder’s; however, an upcoming trip to a warm climate in the dead of winter means dragging out my bathing suit in December. Ugh. The Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts & Sciences encourages emerging artists & established artists to participate in the Small Works Exhibition. The purpose of the exhibition is to showcase small works that reflect personal vision.

MEDIA: 2-D work max size 12” x 12” sq. 3-D work max size 8” x 8” x 8”.

The Pocono Arts Council announces a call to photographers for a national juried photography exhibition, January 14 – February 27, 2012 at ARTSPACE Gallery in Stroudsburg, PA.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists. *Editor’s Note: The Prospectus calls this exhibit a “national” show indicating that artists must reside in the US; however, it doesn’t actually address eligibility. If in doubt, email them.

MEDIA: Open to all photo-based works which have been altered at any point during the photographic process. All content and photographic media are acceptable-alternative processes, traditional black and white, and/or digital methods. Add’l artistic mediums, such as paint or found objects, are encouraged as long as the piece is photographic based.

DEADLINE: November 23, 2011

NOTIFICATION: Entrants will be notified via email on or around December 9, 2011 only if he/she is accepted. A list of accepted artists will also be posted on their website.

JUROR: Harris Fogel is an Associate Professor of Photography, and Director and Curator of the Sol Mednick Gallery and Gallery 1401 in the Media Arts Dept. at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. Fogel’s photographic work is in major museum collections, and he has a long exhibition record. He has written for art and photo-related publications and projects, and has taught photo history for more than 20 years. One of his longstanding interests is placing contemporary work within a contextual framework.

AWARDS: Juror’s Choice Award: $500 cash, a feature on the PoconoArts website, and an article in its monthly newsletter following the exhibition. Curator Award: $200 cash. ARTSPACE Student Award: $100 cash.

SALES: All work must be available for sale. The ARTSPACE Gallery receives a commission of 20% of sale before taxes. All payments to artists will be in the form of a check and mailed 30 days after the close of the show.

The Annual International Exhibition is a juried competition organized by the Department of Art and Art History at The University of Texas at Tyler. Internationally known artists, curators, and scholars have served in past years as jurors selecting works for the exhibition created by some of the best contemporary artists living today. Every year 3 – 6 works are awarded a cash prize or are purchased by the Department from this exhibition. The purchase awards have made it possible for the University to build a collection of over 250 contemporary works of art from outstanding contemporary artists. This collection serves as an educational teaching resource and is exhibited in fine art teaching areas and other areas throughout the campus.

ELIGIBILITY: All artists, 18 years of age or older.

MEDIA: Any two-dimensional work including paintings, drawings, prints, and photographs are acceptable completed within the last three (3) years.

DEADLINE: November 21, 2011

NOTIFICATION: December 16, 2011

ENTRY FEE: $30 for 3 works

JUROR: Karl Umlauf holds a BFA from UT Austin and MFA from Cornell University. His work is inspired by structural forms of land and contains imagery from petroleum refineries, salvage yards, and steel mills. He uses color and imagery to convey rhythm, properties of tension, and physics, with his most famous works consisting of large fiberglass sculptures and cast paper formations. Karl Umlauf’s work has been included in exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art, New York City; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City; Philadelphia Museum of Art; Fogg Art Museum in Cambridge, Massachusetts; and New Orleans Museum of Art. He is currently the Artist-in-Residence and a teaching professor at Baylor University.

AWARDS: Cash and purchase awards will be made and works added to the UT Tyler Department of Art and Art History permanent collection.

JUROR: Alexandra Schwartz is the Curator of Contemporary Art at the Montclair Art Museum where she is currently organizing a series of solo exhibitions and a major traveling exhibition, New Order: Art and Politics in the 1990s (Fall 2013). She was previously the coordinator of The Museum of Modern Art’s Modern Women’s Project and curator of Mind and Matter: Alternative Abstractions, 1940 to Now at MoMA PS1.

Schwartz is the author of Ed Ruscha’s Los Angeles (MIT Press, 2010) and has contributed to various journals, anthologies and exhibition catalogues. She has taught at Columbia University and in the Education Departments at MoMA and the Whitney Museum of American Art. She received a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan and a B.A. from Harvard University
