CALL for ENTRIES: About Face

I have more than one friend that won’t eat food with a face… which should make her a vegetarian on moral grounds, right? Well, while out to lunch with one of them many years ago, my friend ordered fish. I promptly reminded her that she didn’t eat food with faces and that fish definitely have faces. She looked at me as seriously as possible and said, “I’ve looked into a fish’s eyes. They have no story to tell. There’s nothing going on up there. Bring on the tuna.” This next Call will require that your face tell a story.

Check out this Call for Entries from the Annmarie Sculpture Garden (an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institute) for About Face. The entry fee is only $20 for up to four pieces, and this is an excellent opportunity to put your best face forward. Take a look!

CALL for ENTRIES: About Face

About Face explores the artist as storyteller. How does an artist develop and arrange the elements of a good story—character, setting, plot, conflict, climax, and resolution—through the format of a portrait? Though we all have a story to tell, what is gained or lost when we are rendered through an artist’s point of view? Do the completed works represent the person we are, the person we strive to be, or the character the artist sees? How do traditional and new media types affect the impact of a portrait? To this end, the jury seeks portraits that tell a compelling story in a visually interesting way.

About Face will be installed in the spacious Mezzanine Gallery of Annmarie Sculpture Garden’s Arts Building. With over 3300 sq ft of exhibition space, moveable walls, high ceilings, tile floors, an Arakawa hanging system, Internet access, and electricity, the Mezzanine Gallery can accommodate all sizes and types of installations. A few outdoor works will also be considered for inclusion in About Face.

ELIGIBILITY: All media types are welcome. The exhibition is open to all artists age 18 and older working in the U.S. Video entries must be submitted on DVD, playable on QuickTime or RealPlayer, and no more than 30 minutes in length.
DVD or computer based works must be exhibited on equipment provided by artist. Internet access is available. Bases and pedestals must well-balanced and sturdy. Annmarie has a limited number of bases available, please inquire. All frames must be black or silver and simple in design. All works that will be hung on the wall must have brackets that work with the Arakawa hanging system. More information on this system will be provided upon acceptance.

DEADLINE: March 1, 2011 is the deadline for your application.

NOTIFICATION: Artists will be notified of final acceptance status via email by March 7, 2011.

ENTRY FEE: Artists must submit a $20 non-refundable entry fee for up to four entries. Entry fee must be paid by check, money order, or credit card. Each entry must be submitted with three images of the artwork, including one overall view of the artwork, one detail shot, and one installation shot.

ABOUT the ANNMARIE SCULPTURE GARDEN: An affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution, Annmarie is a thirty-acre public sculpture garden and arts center located in scenic Solomons, Maryland, on the Chesapeake Bay. The sculpture garden features a walking path which meanders through the forest, past permanent and loaned sculpture, including more than thirty works on loan from the Smithsonian Institution and the National Gallery of Art. The garden also presents a variety of special events, gallery shows, and engaging public art programs. The new Studio School offers creative classes taught by a talented faculty. The award-winning Arts Building, which opened in May ‘08, is a 15,000 sq.ft. museum-grade exhibition space that includes two large galleries, a gift shop, café, and a sunny patio that offers lovely views of the outdoor sculpture.

CALL to ARTISTS: Housekeeping

NUTS FOR COCONUT

I am not a good house keeper. We must own our faults, and this fact is one of my many faults. I don’t qualify for Hoarding or Clean House, but I also don’t dust unless my kid sneezes. There are always 4 loads of laundry that need to be done, and I am fairly certain there is a can of coconut milk in my cabinet that expired in 2006.

Life is too short.

However, I cannot afford to be a bad blog house keeper. All of you deserve better than dusty pages and rotten Calls. There are too many of you whose trust I have earned over the past year and a half to let things fall through the cracks.

So, I am counting on you to resist the urge to move on to checking other email or goofing off on facebook and help me out folks. We really need to work on cleaning up a few things that are left lingering about even after the New Year:

CLEANING LIST:

REJECTION LETTERS: I had hoped that the Rejection page would be in full swing by January, but I still don’t have enough letters to start properly. Please email your rejections letters and/or emails to me at submitart@artandartdeadlines.com .

I prefer scans of printed letters, but those are rare. Remember, sending a rejection letter qualifies you for free entry into the $2 Art Contest.

GALLERIES: A note to all of the gallery directors that read this blog… If your gallery is mentioned in one of the rejection letters I receive, you will get a feature page on your gallery on this site.

I always want to be fair, and this is my way of balancing the discouraging with the hopeful. I will take the gallery information from the gallery’s website as well as request input fromt he director. I hope this encourages you to encourage your artists to send in their letters. It is your opportunity to let artists know what you want.

FEATURED ARTISTS: I have offered the Featured Artists from the beginning of this site in 2009 through December of 2010 an opportunity to be chosen Featured Artist of the Year. They can receive votes in the form of comments through January 15, 2011.

How something looks affects how it tastes. I love the look of a plate of roasted brussel sprouts. With one look I know they promise a earthy grassiness and a nutty comfortable ease that I will relish. My eleven year old knows with one look that green lumps will not taste good. Everyone’s a critic. This Call for Entries offers you a chance to put your best image forward.

CALL for ENTRIES: Form & Color

This is a book made by artists for artists (see Editor’s note at end), where every art manifestation is welcome. As artist we have all experienced first hand the difficulties in being published and being seen by the professional art world.

We all get tired of sending submissions without getting an answer, always left with the sensation that our money was lost and that our art was worthless. This is why Form & Color decided to lead and promote emerging and established artists to help them reach their goals.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all visual artists – worldwide – 18 years of age or older. All mediums will be accepted such as: painting (oils & acrylics, etc.), drawing, graphic art, photography (includes digital), mixed media, fiber, print making, sculpture, glass, metal, pottery, jewelry, etc. Only one medium per entry form. If you wish to enter two different mediums (ex. sculpture and painting, etc.), you are required to submit an entry form and fee for each particular medium you enter.

DEADLINE: March 1, 2011

NOTIFICATION: All artists will be notified of acceptance or non-acceptance by email (be sure to include you email address).

ENTRY FEE: The entry fee for up to three (3) digital images $40.00 (US Dollars). Artists that wish to enter more than three (3) art pieces may do so but they must pay an additional $5.00 fee per image. The entry fee can be paid via bank check or money order which must be in US Dollars and payable to Form & Color. Artists can also choose to pay by credit card through PayPal (this is the prefered method of payment) which is very safe and secure, print out your PayPal transaction receipt to include with your entry form.

ABOUT FORM & COLOR: Form & Color, the book, is an annual, full-color, fine quality, large (8″ x 10″) format, hardcover publication that is scheduled for release in April 2011. It is going to be High End Art quality book. No articles, focus ia strictly on images with the artist’s name and contact information.

The book will be available to order directly from Form & Color. Being the first volume we will commit to send it directly to the main Museums and Art Consulting Companies in U.S.A.–these are the ones always looking for new expressions of art for their clients.

I AM A TOMATO HUGGER

I never used to be an activist for the environment. I’m not against all things eco-friendly, I’ve just been too lazy over the years. However, when I moved to the Great Smoky Mountains, that all changed. Nature is in my face here, and I can’t help but be concerned about my effect on the very nature that made me want to live here. So, I buy produce locally–the apple and tomatoes are phenomenal, and I try to reduce, reuse and/or recycle a little bit every day because some things ought not be disturbed. This Call for Entries will help you do a little something to help as well.

Nature, Undisturbed™

Nature Undisturbed™ is a celebration of the natural world. The show brings together a diverse collection of photography showcasing the wonders of nature that many don’t take the time to see. It is the hope of the show creators that after viewing the photography, you are inspired to get out on the not-so-beaten path. Perhaps you happen to take along a camera to capture the light through the leaves and continue to enjoy that day each time you view the photo.

This is the show that brings the outside in for all to enjoy.

The exhibition will showcase the simple, yet majestic, beauty of nature, wildlife, and our local landscapes. Each unique image echos the sentiment “a picture is worth a thousand words”; a powerful reinforcement for the importance of greenspace and natural habitat protection for future generations of people and wildlife.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artist photographers 18 and over, amateur or professional.

MEDIA: Photography – Black and white, sepia, color, and manipulated images may be entered in any category. Photos that are submitted cannot not been accepted to any other juried photography show in the year prior to Nature, Undisturbed 2011.

CATEGORIES: Open Category -includes all nature photography at any location (landscapes, animals, etc) & Site Specific Category – includes photos taken at the Flint River and the Trust properties including Line Creek Nature Area, Flat Creek Nature Area in Peachtree City and Sam’s Lake Bird Sanctuary in Fayette County (GA).

DEADLINE: January 31, 2011

NOTIFICATION: No later than the first week of March, 2011.

ENTRY FEE: Photographers may enter up to 4 images per category. There is a $25 entry fee for one category or $45 if entering both categories. Make checks payable to Dogwood Gallery and Framer.

HOW TO ENTER: All photos entered must be in a CD. The files must be JPEG, no larger than 2MB in size. The longest side may be no larger than 1024 pixels. Files should be named as follows: Category -Photographer Name – Title. Mail all entries to: Donna Rosser, 105 Whitehall Place, Fayetteville, GA 30215.

SALES: All exhibitors may sell their work. The artist will receive 50% of the sales price. A portion of proceeds from the show will go to Flint Riverkeeper and Southern Conservation Trust.

JUROR: Susan Todd-Raque provides art advisory services for private collectors, corporations and artists.

Specializing in vintage 20th century photography and work by selected contemporary photographers, Susan Todd-Raque brings a wealth of knowledge from over twenty years as an independent art collection consultant, curator, educator, appraiser and writer on the photographic arts, earning the respect of private and corporate collectors in Atlanta, Chicago and New York.

During her graduate work at Emory University, Todd-Raque learned the fine skill of appraising photography, the true meaning of vintage, and the value of art as an investment. Noted for her dynamic presentation style, she has been a guest lecturer on various aspects of collecting art for the Michael C. Carlos Museum and galerieMC, with the most recent lecture, Inspired Collecting, at the High Museum of Art.

As a founder of Atlanta Celebrates Photography, Todd-Raque created a forum and showcase for photography through an annual lecture series, public art initiative, and numerous activities, thus advancing the position of the photographic arts in the Southeast. Her community service also includes serving on the Board of Directors of Art Papers magazine and the Photo Forum support group at the High Museum of Art.

Some foods cannot be separated from a holiday or family event. Turkey and Thanksgiving for example… the image of turkey conjures family-friendly Rockwell-esque scenes for me even though Idon’t eat turkey for Thanksgiving. And Peeps® scream Easter to me…always. It doesn’t matter if you dress them in cocoa powder and shape them like bats for Halloween, I am still gonna wonder if you’ve had them left over since Spring. This next Call gives you an opportunity to tell your own story… paint your own scene, if you will. Luckily, you aren’t restricted to food…

CALL FOR ENTRIES:
A True Story

Photography is the medium of memory. With its birth came the pictorial press and the realization that “a picture tells a thousand words.” This is documentary photography. It is present and tangible, and we rely on it to be authentic and true. It teaches us, and when presented in proper context, we believe what we see.

It is the job of the Photojournalist and Documentary Photographer to present the facts at hand. It is a challenging job often requiring instant decisions and sometimes in the face of substantial obstacles. How do we do this succinctly and objectively while providing an engaging and remarkable image or series?

Is it possible to capture a photographic truth while simultaneously expressing our naturally subjective eye?

Juror Peter Turnley has proven the task can be successful – have you?

For A True Story, VPS is looking for the documented event, person, or place, whether political, religious, cultural or environmental. Reality itself is infinitely more complex that what a single image can show, so we encourage your Photo Essay submissions of up to six images (some single images tell the whole thing adequately – these will be considered equally). As the Photo Essay is so often complimented or even interdependent with text, they will allow up to three sentences to accompany each accepted image for display in the gallery.

Of special note: VPS is able to accept essays for this exhibition! So much of the genre appears as photo story, and they are thrilled to offer the opportunity to exhibitors to submit the same. Whether you are submitting single images or multiples as a story, Juror Peter Turnley will consider your work as it is intended. Who knows, this exhibition may include a few very lucky photographers who present an outstanding documentary photo story in several images.

JUROR: Peter Turnley was educated in French Literature and International Relations, inspiring his truly International work. For the past quarter century, he has been photographing in more than eighty-five countries, capturing world conflict, and several major geo-political moments.

His portraits of political, cultural, and religious leaders as well as photo essays of a variety of social realities additionally weight his extensive, ever-expanding portfolio. He has published five books: “Beijing Spring,” “Moments of Revolution,” “In Times of War and Peace,” “Parisians” and “McClellan Street”. His images have been published in International magazines including Stern, Paris Match, Geo, Life, National Geographic, the London Sunday Times, Le Monde, and Doubletake.

Additionally, Turnley’s photographs have been showcased on the cover of Newsweek magazine over forty times. VPS is thrilled to have his extensive experience as a successful Photojournalist and Documentary Photographer applied to his mission as Juror for “A True Story.”

RULES FOR
PHOTO SUBMISSIONS:

Age: Entrants must be at least 18 years old. If younger, a parent or legal guardian may make the submission for you.

Ownership: All submitted photos must have been taken by the photographer making the entry.

If you are a parent or legal guardian submitting for a minor, please make it clear on the submission form.

Digital Submissions: All submissions must be made by digital files through:

1. Upload on VermontPhotoSpace.com or

2. Sent via email to submissions (at) VermontPhotoSpace.com. This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it along with an application form. There is a $5.00 surcharge for email entries.

3. Images should be as large as possible but no larger than 1280 pixels on the longest side, type jpg – set to the highest quality. DPI can be set to any number, but if you must specify something to go with 72 dpi.

FEES: Up to three images may be submitted for a fee of $20 US for on-line submission and $25 for email submission. Additional images may be submitted for an additional $5 US per image.

DEADLINE: Images and payment must be received by midnight EST on the submission closing date March 14, 2011.

RIGHTS: Photographers retain all rights to their work, except for submissions accepted for exhibition: artists grant Vermont Photo Space the right to use their images to promote the exhibition and for display on VPS website and for inclusion in an exhibit catalog.

Vermont Photo Space Gallery provides free matting and framing of accepted entries for the duration of each of our exhibitions, subject to standard sizes. Photographers set their own prices if they wish to sell their work, and retain all rights.

DIPLOMACY STINKS

It is a happy, shiny New Year, and I am excited about the possibilities. Per usual, I am optimistic about the future… nauseatingly optimistic, according to my husband Jon. However, most folks will also tell you that my attitude toward life is often like my taste in food…direct, unapologetic and undiplomatic. Can food be unapologetic and undiplomatic? Have you ever met a cheese named Limberger? That sort of straight forwardness is what drew me to this next Call.

You know that I am not a huge fan of online competitions; however, I think of this as digital publication which is always a good thing. Light Space & Time Online Art Gallery presents a Juried Competition, in which 2D artists from around the world are called upon to make online submissions for the theme Seascapes for inclusion into the February 2011 online group exhibition.

ELIGIBILITY: Light Space & Time encourages entries from all 2D artists regardless of where they reside and regardless of their experience or education in the art field.

I frequently get asked what it would take for me to throw up my hands and give in to my desire to do nothing but cook and make art. The Goose would have to lay the Golden Egg. CALL for ENTRIES:
Rosen Outdoor Sculpture Competition

The Rosen Outdoor Sculpture Competition & Exhibition is a national juried competition presented annually by the Turchin Center for the Visual Arts on the campus of Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina.

Made possible by the generosity of longtime arts supporters Martin & Doris Rosen, this national, juried competition continues a long-held tradition of showcasing the best of large-scale, contemporary American sculpture. Each year, 10 sculptures are selected and are situated in outdoor, public settings across campus. A cash prize is awarded to the artist whose work is chosen as that year’s Rosen Award winner.

Since its establishment in 1987, The Rosen has become an integral part of An Appalachian Summer Festival, the university’s annual multi-arts celebration, with the announcement of the Rosen Award winner coming during the festival’s annual Sculpture Walk with that year’s juror.

ELIGIBILITY: The 25th Rosen Outdoor Sculpture Competition and Exhibition is open to artists currently residing in the US and at least 18 years of age. Artists exhibited in previous Rosen Competitions are not eligible to enter for three years. Previous recipients of the Martin and Doris Rosen Award are not eligible to enter for five years.

DEADLINE: February 12, 2011

NOTIFICATION: March 9, 2011

ENTRY FEE: $20 non-refundable entry fee

AWARDS: Ten finalists will be selected for installation on the Appalachian State University’s (ASU) campus. All finalists, whose works are installed on campus, will receive a $1,000 honorarium. The Rosen Sculpture Competition will provide installation equipment and will cover the cost of installation and lodging during installation and de-installation.

One artist will be named as the Martin & Doris Rosen Award Winner and will receive a cash prize of $5,000 plus a weeklong residency with additional stipend, within ASU’s Department of Art during the 2011-2012 academic year. Awards and Honoraria total $16,500.

In addition, the Rosen Sculpture Competition is a featured exhibition offering a printed catalog, audio tour powered by Guide By Cell, sales program, optional insurance coverage & archives on the competition’s website.

I live a fairly rural existence, but no one loves technology more than me. Kitchen technology is even better. CUTE technology is the best. Check out this not-so-tech-savvy egg cuber at Amazon. CALL for ENTRIES:
Digital Works

The Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts and Sciences (LBIF) encourages emerging artists as well as those with established reputations to participate in the National Juried Competiton. The purpose of the exhibition is to showcase works created through digital processes that reflect artistic merit, sophisticated use of media, and personal vision. Work may include any digitally produced presentations. All entries must be original and must have been executed since 2008.

ENTRY FEE: There is an entry fee of $35.00 for up to four submissions. Fee will be received in U.S funds only, payable by check, money order, or credit card (MasterCard or Visa only) payable to LBIF. All fees are NON-REFUNDABLE.

DEADLINE:
Postmarked by March 18, 2011

NOTIFICATION:
May 6, 2011

IMAGES: Entries will be juried from digital files on CD or DVD (these will not be returned). Up to four (4) digital files (images must be in .jpg format not smaller than 1280×1024 and not larger than 4MB per image) may be submitted. Images should be labeled as follows: Last_First_Number on entry form_Title of Work (Example: Doe_John_1_Untitled). Audio & video files should not exceed 10 min or 20MB each. Label CD or DVD with artist’s first & last name.

AWARDS: Best in Show $1000, 2nd Place $500, 3rd Place $200, and Two Honorable Mentions $100 ea.

JUROR: Christiane Paul is the Director of the Media Studies Graduate Programs and Associate Prof. of Media Studies at The New School, NY, and Adjunct Curator of New Media Arts at the Whitney Museum of American Art. She has written extensively on new media arts and lectured internationally on art and technology.

An expanded new edition of her book, Digital Art was published in spring 2008 and her edited anthology, New Media in the White Cube and Beyond – Curatorial Models for Digital Art, was published by UC Press in December 2008.

At the Whitney Museum, she curated the shows “Profiling” (2007) and “Data Dynamics” (2001); the net art selection for the 2002 Whitney Biennial; the online exhibition “CODeDOC” for artport, the Whitney Museum’s online portal to Internet art for which she is responsible; as well as “Follow Through” by Scott Paterson and Jennifer Crowe (2005).

HOLY BAGEL, BATMAN!

The holy grail for most of the emerging artists I know is a solo show in New York City. The myth of the NYC show as the tipping point for wealth, success and fame is as idealized as NYC diners, bagels and street hot dog vendors.

Don’t misunderstand, I LOVE diners, bagels and hot dogs. I recognize that none of them will change my life, but I will enjoy one and all if you offer me one.

CALL for ENTRIES:
2011 National Juried Competition

First Street Gallery in New York, NY seeks entries for an exhibit, June 22 – July 16, 2011. Learn more about NYC at one of my favorite blogs, Walking Off the Big Apple.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to U.S. resident artists at least 18 years old. Exception: Artists currently represented by First Street Gallery.

MEDIA: Eligible works include oils, acrylics, watercolors, mixed media, pastels, drawings, prints and sculpture in any medium. No photography, video, film, or installations. No mechanically reproduced artwork (computer, printer, giclees, etc.).

DEADLINE: Received by March 31, 2011

NOTIFICATION: May 15, 2011

ENTRY FEE: The fee is $35 for 1 – 3 works. $5 for each additional work up to 10 works total. Entry fees are non-refundable.

AWARD: A Solo Show

COMMISSION: The gallery will take no commission on any work sold . Work not for sale must be marked “N.F.S.”. No “P.O.R.” sales.

JUROR: Paul Resika is a highly-respected American painter. Using bold colors and recurring motifs inspired by nature and the world around him, his work merges the representational with the abstract.

At 19, he began studying with Hans Hoffman.

Represented by Lori Bookstein Fine Art in NYC, he has exhibited extensively in galleries and museums around the world including galleries in Madrid, Rome, London and Venice and the Corcoran Gallery of Art, The National Museum of American Art, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the National Academy of Design, where he is an Academician.

Resika’s numerous awards and honors include a Guggenheim Fellowship.
