I love experimenting with new ingredients, but I also know when to rely on a time-tested recipe. Like most food enthusiasts, I own my own original printing (1960s) of the Better Homes & Gardens Red and White Cookbook because if I ever need to know the truth about a staple, I have a resource. This call is for art publication in a magazine in its 24th year of publication…tried and true.

Check out this Call for Entries for Shots Magazine, Issue No. 111. The theme is the body …lots of room for interpretation. And, the entry fee is only $16 for up to TWELVE images. Possible award? Art Publication is a reward in itself. Take a look…

A well-established, independent, quarterly photography journal in its 24th year of publication, SHOTS Magazine reaches an international community of photographers, educators, galleries, museums, collectors and other fine art photography enthusiasts.

MEDIA: All photography processes and techniques are welcomed. Color work will be reproduced in black & white. Please follow guidelines closely.

CALL for ENTRIES: 100th Exhibition

REASON TO CELEBRATE!

I have made hundreds of grilled cheese sandwiches. I have entered hundreds of art shows. I have made hundreds of canapes and attended hundreds of opening night receptions. I believe that the 100 mark is to be celebrated. This blog will soon celebrate its 300th post. This next Call for Entries should put you in the mood to celebrate.

Check out this Call for Entries from the Connecticut Acadamy of Fine Arts and the Mystic Arts Center for their 100th Exhibition. There are lots of awards so don’t miss this opportunity!

CALL for ENTRIES:
100th Exhibition

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists. One or two works may be submitted. Work must not have been previously shown at the CAFA or the Mystic Arts Center. If you are not in the United States: They do not currently have capability for converting currency or receiving international shipments. But, if you have a contact within the US, you can work through them.

MEDIA: All fine arts media: painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, graphics.

DEADLINE: March 25, 2011 is the mail in deadline. May 22 and 23, 2011 is the hand-delivery deadline. Artists may enter up to two works. Entries will be received Sunday, May 22 and Monday, May 23, 11AM–5PM at the Mystic Arts Center Inc., 9 Water St. Mystic, CT 06355.

NOTIFICATION: Posted at www.ctacademy.org for mail-in entries by April 22, 2011, and carry-in entries by May 25, 2011. Editor’s Note: Many galleries are going to posting results instead of emailing entrants. I don’t like it either, but make sure you keep records so that you know to check their site.

ENTRY FEE: $25/1st & $15/2nd entry (Academy members, 2nd entry free, dues paid). Make check payable to: CAFA. Fees are non-refundable.

AWARDS: Best of Show $1000, Second Place $700, Third Place $400, Fourth Place $200, Painting $100, Sculpture $100, Drawing $100, Photography $100 and Graphics $100. Additional awards include the Art Spirit Foundation, Dianne B. Bernhard Award for a Pastel $500, the Allied Artists of America Painting Award $100, the Simonds Photographic Award for a B & W photograph $100 certificate, the PhotoSynthesis Award for a traditional or alternate process photograph $100 Certificate and the Jerry’s Artarama award.

JURORS: Joy M. Pepe is Professor Emerita of Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts, where she developed the Art History curriculum, implemented an Art History Minor, and was chair of the Liberal Arts Department. She serves often as a juror, throughout Connecticut, for competitions, and exhibitions, and she gives popular lecture series on many art history topics.

Last year Pepe held the position of Professional in Residence in Art History at the University of New Haven, and this year she is teaching various Art History courses at the University of Hartford, Southern Connecticut State University, and Albertus Magnus College. She holds a Masters from Wesleyn University with a concentration in Art History, and she has done doctoral studies (ABD) at Rutgers University in New Jersey.

Anne von Stuelpnagel is Director of Exhibitions at the Bruce Museum in Greenwich, Connecticut; Since 1995 she has been responsible for the design of the 12-14 exhibitions per year of the Museum; Having worked at the Bruce Museum since 1980, her responsibilities included art, history, anthropology, and science. She received her BFA from Blocherer School of Fine Art and Applied Sciences, in Munich, Germany with a Major in painting and a Minor in Interior Design. Anne initiated and has carried out, for many years, the Outdoor Art Show of the Bruce Museum. After settling in the United States, in 1977, she studied printmaking and has since worked primarily as a printmaker.

VISITING ARTIST WANTED: Black Hawk College

PUSHING MY BUTTONS

My child cannot cook. In his defense, he is a brilliant, nerdy eleven year old that loves to read and dance and play games. He makes great grades… but some things escape him.

He will be so embarassed when he finds out I posted this one day, but… I left him with the responsibility to microwave a frozen meal for his lunch while I was busy blogging one day. Moments later he came to me and said, “I pushed the button, and it didn’t open.”

Yep, you know the little perforated semi-circle on the back of the box that you’re supposed to push in to create a thumb hole that allows you to rip the box open? MmmHmm, in his literal little mind, there was apparently supposed to be an auto open once he pushed the button. We laugh now, but talk to me in ten years. It won’t be funny if he’s still living with me then. He just needs guidance about nuance, right? He just needs to understand not everything is literal? This Call may allow you to pass along a little instruction to someone that needs the guidance.

VISITING ARTIST WANTED:
Black Hawk College

Black Hawk College in Moline, Illinois is seeking a short-term visiting visual artist for April, 2011. The goal of the visiting artist program is to introduce our students to working artists who will provide insight about educational experiences and career goals, inspirations and artistic visions, and the business side of art.

DUTIES: The visiting artist will discuss his/her body of work, methods and materials, and experiences with undergraduate studio art students over a period of two days. Demonstrations, if possible, are encouraged.

ELIGIBILITY: Visual artists working in any art form or medium are welcome to apply.

DEADLINE: February 18, 2011

ENTRY FEE: There is no fee to submit a proposal.

STIPEND: The selected artist will receive a stipend of $1000 for his/her time and travel expenses.

SUBMISSIONS: Interested artists should submit a resume, a detailed proposal for the two-day workshop, and ten to twenty images of previous work.

I dislike having food thrown at me. But inevitably every time I go to a Japanese hibachi restaurant, I am the unwilling target of the Chef’s attempt to pop a shrimp into a customer’s mouth. I wonder if the Chefs are like horses… they sense fear. Here’s hoping the result of this Call is a great opportunity to eat authentic Japanese food while not feeling like you’re being used for target practice.

ARTIST RESIDENCY:
3 Months in Japan

The Japan-U.S. Friendship Commission works cooperatively with the National Endowment for the Arts to sponsor The U.S/Japan Creative Artists’ Program. The program provides support for up to five outstanding contemporary and traditional artists from the United States to spend a three-month residency in Japan to pursue their individual artistic goals.

The U.S/Japan Creative Artists’ Program is extremely competitive; applicants should have regional or national recognition and anticipate a highly rigorous review of their work.

Artists should present compelling reasons
for wanting to work in Japan.

ELIGIBILITY: Eligible applicants are architects, choreographers, composers, creative writers, designers, media artists, playwrights, visual artists, or solo theater artists who work with original material (including puppeteers, storytellers and performance artists). Multidisciplinary artists and artistic directors of theater or dance companies are also eligible.

DEADLINE: February 1, 2011

ENTRY FEE: There is no entry fee.

AWARDS: A monthly stipend for living expenses and a housing supplement, as well as an allowance for professional support services. Up to $6,000 for round trip transportation for the artist, domestic partner and/or dependent children, and a baggage/storage allowance. A stipend for pre-departure Japanese language study in the United States.

When you think of North Carolina, what food comes to mind? I instantly think vinegar-based barbeque; however, this blog has been awash with pit-smoked references lately. So, I turned to my friend Michelle, a fellow blogger and Foreign Service officer for a little help. She is getting her doctorate from UNC. She says the best sushi place ever is a little place called Akai Hana and just happens to be outside of Chapel Hill in Carrboro, NC. This next Call might end in a great sushi dinner if you play your cards right.

Juried Exhibitions Series

The Chapel Hill Public Arts Office invites artists to apply for the 2011 – 2012 Juried Exhibitions Series. Original two- and three-dimensional artwork by selected artists will be displayed in Chapel Hill Town Hall and possibly other Town cultural facilities beginning May 2011.

Selected artists will be invited to exhibit their work in small group shows of two or three artists for two-month exhibition periods. The Juried Exhibitions Series is promoted in the local media and through Public Arts Office announcements and press releases. Selected artists will be asked to provide specific information and deliver their work for installation at agreed upon times. Public Arts staff and contractors install the work for exhibition.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists creating original artwork that can be hung indoors or displayed in glass cases.

Each JPEG file must be named in the following format – lastname_01_title.jpg – where the artist’s last name is followed by underscore, two-digit identification number, underscore, title, file extension. If you wish to show a detail, include it within the required number of images. Please do not present your work as a montage of images (ie, in a PowerPoint file); each image must be a separate JPEG. Images submitted should be representative of the type of work proposed for exhibition.

Annotated Image List – A word file (.doc or .docx) listing JPEG images by two-digit identification number, followed by artist, title of work depicted, media, and dimensions (width by length in inches).

Resume – A word file (.doc or .docx) providing resume, no longer than two pages.

JURY PROCESS: An Artist Selection Committee comprising representatives of Chapel Hill Town Hall, the Chapel Hill Public Arts Commission, the Public Arts Office, and local artists will review all complete portfolios and select artists to participate in the 2011 – 2012 Juried Exhibitions Series. Selections are based on artistic excellence and the goal of exhibiting a variety of media. Public Arts staff will notify artists of the Selection Committee results and will make exhibition arrangements with selected artists.

I typically only post once per day. Any more smacks of double-dipping of your time and inbox space. I get notified everytime someone unsubscribes from this blog, and I am sincerely sorry when I found out that an artist has decided that AAAD isn’t something they want or need or have time for. So, I am self-conscious about double-dipping… except in ice cream, of course.

So why double-dip today? Well, I am also self-conscious about straying too far from bringing you the art deadlines and opportunities that are the whole purpose of this blog. Last Monday I posted a housekeeping blog, earlier this morning I posted the Artist of the Year blog, and tommorrow I unveil the first Featured Artist of 2011. I have seen a few too many1950s musicals. In high school my weekends often involved pork chops, sweet peas and mashed potatoes…and musicals like Holiday Inn, Easter Parade and Oklahoma. To this day when we play the license plate game in the car and I see an “Oklahoma” plate, we all break into song with “Oooooklahoma, where the wind comes sweepin’ down the plain.” Show your love for Oklahoma with this next Call…or at least your keen knack for research.

CALL for ENTRIES: It Gets Better/Make It Better

Social change starts with the individual. One gay teenager jumps off a bridge and thousands are motivated to share their coming-out stories.

One person can also serve as a positive symbol to effect social change. A woman keeps her seat on the bus and a social revolution is born.

By working to better the world, you actually make things better for yourself. Studies of collective action have shown that when people identify with a particular cause, and work towards social change, the change often occurs within—people feel legitimized. Empowerment is not necessarily even reliant on the movement’s success: victory occurs in the very struggle of self-expression and self-empowerment.

Entries for It Gets Better/Make It Better should explore this theme of how the individual exists within and can affect the community. One is many.

When is the last time you went to a cooking demonstration? I love the sort of public bravado that comes with a demonstration meant to sell pots ‘n’ pans or cutlery. And infomercials are just the best. If I didn’t have a day job, I would be broke from all the gadgets I could buy like sandwich makers, dehydrators, juicers, blenders, choppers and baking pans. I am in love with the NyFork (left). This next Call gives you a public outlet to display your work with the need for fancy knife skills or clever alliteration.

ELIGIBILITY: Artwork can be created with any 2D or 3D media with the exception of film or video. All works must be completed within the previous 3 years, without supervision and not previously shown in any VAA juried competition. The viewing environment is a public business lobby; therefore, subject matter such as erotica, violence and religious reference cannot be accepted.

DEADLINE: Saturday, February 26, 2011 – Postmark deadline for entries

NOTIFICATION: Thursday, March 17, 2011

ENTRY FEE: The entry fee for 1 to 3 works is $35; one entry per artist. A diptych or triptych is considered a single work.

SUBMISSIONS: Work must be submitted on a CD in JPG format. File resolution should be 72 dpi or greater, and no larger than 5MB. Cleary label outside of CD case and the CD with artist name, entry number and title. CD’s will become property of VAA and will NOT be returned. Artist will be notified by phone if selected by the juror.

SALES: All sales are handled between the artist and the buyer and NO commission will be collected by VAA. Please mark NFS if work is not for sale.

AWARDS: In excess of $2,500.00 in cash and merchandise awards. (Only one per person)

JUROR: Brian Portman is a Houston based artist. He received a BFA at Rhode Island School of Design where he was European Honors Fellow. His work is exhibited locally, nationally and internationally. Brian has been on the faculty at The Glassell School of Art, Museum of Fine Arts Houston since 1999. He also has given seminars for the Museum of Fine Arts Houston Education Department. Other awards and fellowships include the Anna Giles Kimber Travel Grant from the Dallas Museum of Art, NEA, and the Core Program 1983-85 at The Glassell School of Art. His collections are included in The Museum of Fine Arts Houston, Dallas Museum of Art, Walker Art Center and Museo Culterdad, Mexico City. He was juror for Art on the Avenue (2003) and juror with Arielle Masson and Sandy Zilker (2004). Brian was featured in Catherine D. Anspon’s book “Texas Art Today” in 2010. He is represented by Meredith Long & Co., Houston, Tx.

I love root vegetables. Carrots and turnips are yummy, but I simply have never developed a taste for beets. I don’t hate beets. I just don’t eat them. But I must admit I’ve been tempted. My mother grew up in the hills of Tennessee, and when she was little, her mother used to boil beets in a kettle over an open fire outside in the yard.

The little devils that they were, my mother and her siblings used to grab them by the greens out of the pot and squeeeeeeeze. Apparently they shoot out like little red rockets out of their skins. Beet rockets, funny. Get to the source of your imagination with this Call.

South Shore Art Center invites entries that offer distinctive, imaginative
imagery, across all media. This juried exhibition asks artists to look back into their past life experiences to find ‘roots of inspiration’ that manifest themselves in current artworks.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists and all media. No geographical restrictions. Work must have be recent and not previously shown at South Shore Art Center. All work must be for sale.
