What you do if your grocery option were cut by 90%?  I recently read an article about the single largest threat to independent or regional grocers being small-box discount stores like Dollar General, Family Dollar & Dollar Tree.  If you groceries could only come from one of these sources, can you imagine never eating fresh meat or vegetables again?  Virtually every food you would consume would be pre-processed, significantly so.  Nothing you ate would be as it exists in nature or even one step removed.  My mind is really blown by that idea.  It scares me.  It that scenario, I would have to put my own health into the hands of the food processing industry.  How does that sit with you?  Yeah, me neither.

I live less than 5 miles from a regional grocer and another 10-15 miles from large-box retailers like Kroger, Publix, Walmart & Aldi.  As much as I would like to buy local, my local grocer doesn’t make stock decision or employ pricing policies that allow me to make the best menu or the best financial decisions.  Currently, Aldi gets the bulk of my formal grocery dollars.  I want to make foods based on fresh fruits, vegetables, meats, seafood & diary –as close as I can find to their natural form as possible.  If I eat poorly, I want it to be by my choice.

A similar desire prompted by media change.  I wanted to work using supplies and/or products that I could find easily, or make myself if necessary.  At the time, I was contemplating significant rural travel that would have made art supply deliveries less convenient. I’ve always been a closet painter, but always acrylics.  Acrylics led me down the path to acrylic mediums, and then my supply load quadrupled.  I slowly made my way to watercolor.  Purchased paints last long periods & arrive in compact containers.  I can make both paints & paper with very few supplies if necessary. Finished work can be stored flat, pressed.  Small amounts of water can be found anywhere.  It took me a long time to commit, but I’m here and I’m in love, naturally.

This next Call in interested in seeing your nature-oriented work.  What do you have to show in this well-established gallery?  Take your time, research the history of this show & venue and the curatorial choices that have shaped this space.  Could this be a good fit for you?  Check out this Call for Entries from Slow Art Productions for Arte Natura 2019 at the Limner Gallery (Hudson, NY). $35 entry open to all media and all artists.  Take a look…

lost in TRANSLATION

So, I’m writing this post from an artist residency in New York.  I have been here for three days, and I have lost 5 pounds.  I am eating glorious food prepared in a traditional French manner breakfast, lunch & dinner, compliments of the restaurant on the property.  How is this possible you ask?  I eat exactly three meals a day.  Normally I am a grazer, eating off and on all day.  But, I am currently in a town with a population of approx. 150 people without a vehicle or availability of a local grocer.  I have spent three solid days in my studio coming out only to be fed,  and the end result is weight loss.  I can see the tabloid headline now — “Emerging Diet Trend:  eat anything & lose weight”. Ha.  Until then, here’s a Call for emerging artists.  Bon appétit..

Check out this Call for Entries from Slow Art Productions for Emerging Artists 2019 at the Limner Gallery (Hudson, NY). $35 entry open to all media and all artists.  Take a look…

brain FOOD

There are lots of foods I eat that give others pause.  There are lots of foods that I have tried once but will never consume again.  Then there are foods that make no sense to me, at all.  When I was in college, my favorite 24 hour diner was legendary.  It had been open since the 1930s, and because it was located just steps from the state capitol, the stories that built its reputation were also legendary.  The menu was populated with standard fare like over-easy eggs and BLTs, but among the meat options included were souse, head cheese & calf brains.  Really?  Did any of those things come in such high demand that they warranted permanent menu status? *shudder*  I’ll keep my brain associations within my own head, thank-you-very-much.  Speaking of heads, take a look…

coffee for none

My husband is a tea drinker, and it is my fault.  So, I don’t like the smell of brewed coffee.  (I hear the nasty emails being pecked out on keyboards across the world.)  I haven’t drank a cup of coffee in 18+ years.  I think brewed coffee smells like skunk spray.  No joke.  So for a long time, my husband used a French press because the odor was lessened.  But then the plunger on the press broke, and neither of us ordered a new one.  Now, he drinks Earl Grey every morning.  I feel a little bad. (Not really.)  Hobbits like tea, or so we are led to believe.  You figure out how that is connected to this next Call by investigating for yourself…

Goat heads, really?  Caught a show called Extreme Cheapskates the other day just long enough to see a man by two goat heads for $7.50 total.  In many parts of the world, goat heads are a common protein, and I’m not knocking it because I haven’t eaten it.  My problem with the concept is that he was supposed to be an extreme cheapskate.  I can buy 10 lbs. of chicken quarters for $6.
