HEART-BEET
of health

I am convinced that food is the future of health care.  I don’t really fit the stereotype of a patchouli-wearing, dread-locked Mother Earth worshiper.  But as I age, I find myself turning away from traditional medicine and turning toward food remedies.  All I can say is that it is working for me, and it has added a whole new air of importance to the food I already so dearly love.  This next Call wants your take on Mother Earth.  May I suggest beets?

Check out this Call for Entries from ArtAscent (online) for Mother Earth, their 2nd Int’l Art Competition. If you haven’t figured it out, hard copy art publication is being replaced by online art magazines. You can’t beat ’em, so I suggest you join them.  Make careful decisions just like you would about a gallery. Don’t forget, you can enter for only $15…

The theme of this call is Mother Earth. The beauty of art is that 100 artists can look at the same thing and interpret it in completely unique ways. That’s what can make it breathtaking. When you enter the competition, there is an ‘artists statement’ portion where you can provide context for your art and briefly explain how it relates to the theme. So, what does Mother Earth represent to you? Existentialism, the human struggle, environmentalism, spirituality, wellness, origins, mythology, balance, cultural unity and interconnectivity, responsibility, something else? –from artascent.com

REMINDER:

EAT your
HEART out!

While watching a TV show about how salami is made, my son announced that eating the organs of an animal is wrong. However, when I explained all the things that his new belief would eliminate from his menu, he then asked, “Do they at least WASH the intestines first?” Hehehe. These days I prefer my animal organs in the form of chicken pate, but I will have to start keeping the ingredient list to myself, apparently. This next Call for Entries involves a different sort of heart all together. This could be an excellent opportunity…

I love reading about food almost as much as cooking it and eating it.  Amongst my favorites are polar opposites:  Cooking Light and Food & Wine.  No surprise, I’ve had a bit of a struggle with my weight over the years.  In recent years, I’ve gotten better control of my food issues by figuring out one amazing fact… My menu is far more varied and exciting when I am trying to figure out how to do it in a healthy manner.  It was a fascinating personal discovery.  So, while I adore the gourmand Food & Wine, I am personally more likely to actually prepare foods found in Cooking Light.  This next call can make your work the tempting dessert on the cover of an art catalog.  Take a look…

Check out this Call for Entries from Jerry’s Artarama for the 2012 Catalog Cover Contest: Empowering Artists.  There is no entry fee, the work can be as small as 8″x10″, and the award could mean HUGE exposure for your work.  What do you have to lose?

DON’T MAKE ME
BEET YOU!

I love root vegetables.  Carrots and turnips are yummy, but I simply have never developed a taste for beets.  I don’t hate beets.  I just don’t eat them.  But I must admit I’ve been tempted.  My mother grew up in the hills of Tennessee, and when she was little, her mother used to boil beets in a kettle over an open fire outside in the yard.

The little devils that they were, my mother and her siblings used to grab them by the greens out of the pot and squeeeeeeeze.  Apparently they shoot out like little red rockets out of their skins.  Beet rockets, funny.  Get to the source of your imagination with this Call.
