Mismatched pajamas, a quilt we call “the sleepy maker” and sappy, corny or tear-jerker Saturday movies (think Lifetime and Hallmark) …popcorn & chocolate & pizza, oh my. CALL for ENTRIES: Nest

Nest is an all-media juried exhibition sponsored by The Torpedo Factory Art Center that examines the nest as a symbol for home and refuge. Artists are asked to respond to the theme of nests and how they view this symbol, literally or conceptually.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists and all media.

ENTRY FEE: A non-refundable fee of $35.00 must accompany each entry form, and a $10.00 fee for each additional art work submitted. Checks are to be made payable to the Torpedo Factory Artists’ Association (TFAA) or via Paypal*, targetgallery@torpedofactory.org. *A $1.50 fee applies if you pay by Paypal.

JUROR: The juror for this exhibition is Gretchen Schermerhorn, Artistic Director for the Pyramid Atlantic Arts Center in Silver Spring, Maryland. Thematically, her work often explores the relationships between humans, science, politics and psychology. Her works have been exhibited nationally and internationally in such places as Northern Ireland, New York, Boston and Washington DC. Her work is in public and permanent collections including the Janet Turner Print Collection and Amity Art Foundation.

SALES: A commission of 40% will be taken on all works sold as a result of this exhibition. Payment will be mailed to the artist within 30 days of the exhibition closing.

I’m a dog person. I love cats and used to own one until my son became allergic, but make no mistake…I’m a dog person. And, my dogs are foodies. You shouldn’t be surprised, ha. My mutts are are just big loveable pups, and I simply can’t resist the longing stares that beg for grapes…white grapes, specifically. They camp out while I cook looking for broccoli stalks, summer squash ends and the occasional raw potato piece. This next Call gives you an opportunity to help the four-legged kind of the feline assortment.

CALL for ENTRIES: Alley Cat Art Show

The Alley Cat Art Show is for all artists who are cat lovers, and who would like a new opportunity to exhibit while helping cats and kittens across the United States.

This show is to benefit Alley Cat Allies — a national organization dedicated to helping stray and feral cats with veterinary care, shelter and humane treatment. They are also honoring the memory of tireless cat caretaker and animal advocate Susan Michelle Kortyna, who passed away suddenly in October, 2010.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to artists 18 years of age or older who submit artwork in any medium except video. Submissions must be the creation of the artist. Reproductions of original artwork, such as glicee prints of original paintings, will not be accepted. Please note that approximately 75 pieces will be chosen for gallery exhibition, with a remaining 125 in the on-line exhibition.

DEADLINE: January 31, 2011

NOTIFICATION: February 4, 2011

ENTRY FEES: Artists are asked to complete an entry form and submit a non-refundable fee of $25 for up to 3 images. Please note that $15 of this entry is in the form of a tax-deductible donation to Alley Cat Allies, and must be made directly to the organization. Please note that if a large number of high-quality art is submitted, they have a commitment from the Cuyahoga County Public Library, Brecksville branch to display work in their gallery/community room. This will allow all 200 pieces to be exhibited, along with much heavier traffic and promotion to the public.

CALL for ENTRIES: Human + Being

The Center for Fine Art Photography in Fort Collins, CO announces a call to photographers world wide, both amateur and professional, for a photography exhibition to be held March 25 – April 23, 2011.

Being human is complicated.

Human + Being is an equally complex equation, the sum of these parts a richly textured experience unique to the individual but shared universally. Triumphant, tragic, absurd and the quiet significance in between, our stories unfold without cease. Explore the emotions and actions that define being human.

ELIGIBILITY: The exhibition is open to all photographers world wide, both amateur and professional. The Center invites photographers working in all mediums, styles and schools of thought to participate in its exhibitions.

MEDIA: Photography

EXHIBITION PRINTS: All accepted images submitted for exhibition must be printed and framed or mounted professionally. The Center recognizes that some work is non traditional and incorporates the framing as an integral part of the presentation. JUROR: For over twenty five years Phil Borges has lived with and documented indigenous and tribal cultures around the world. Through his work, he strives to create a heightened understanding of the issues faced by people in the developing world. Phil has hosted three television documentaries for Discovery and National Geographic as a part of a series that investigates indigenous cultures that still maintain a spiritual dialogue with the natural world.

Phil’s photographs are collected and exhibited in museums and galleries worldwide. His award-winning books have been published in four languages and in 1998 he was presented the Photo Media Magazine “Photoperson of the Year” award. In December, 2003 Phil was honored with the Humanitarian Award, receiving the Lucie at the 1st Annual International Photography Awards.

In 2005 he was named a Giraffe Hero for his humanitarian work. Phil teaches and lectures internationally and is co-founder of Blue Earth Alliance, a 501(c)3 that sponsors photographic projects focusing on endangered cultures and threatened environments.

CALL for ENTRIES: Less Than or Equal To 196

I spend a lot of time having this conversation with my husband Jon: “What do you want for dinner?” to which he responds, “I don’t know. What do you want for dinner?” I rarely know the real answer and often end up settling for whatever is easiest because it is already defrosted. However, every once in a while, I know exactly what I want (Sunday it was mushroom soup), and often I want only that. No side dishes, no amuse bouche. Just mushroom soup. This next Call lets you choose just soup…or the whole meal.

Check out this Call for Entries from SICA (The Shore Institute of the Contemporary Arts) for ≤196. Simple concept: your work has to be equal to or smaller than 196 square inches, i.e. 14″x14″ or smaller (if square) or 14″x14″x14″ or smaller (if cubed). Any media that will fit into those guidelines will work, and you can enter just one piece for as little as $15. Mushroom soup for one please…

ELIGIBILITY: Works that have been completed in the past 5 years and that has never been displayed at SICA. Each artist may enter as many ORIGINAL pieces for consideration as they wish. Only one digital image can be submitted for each work of art, except for sculpture or installation where 2 views of each submission are allowed.

MEDIA & SIZE: The exhibition is open to all visual artists in all mediums. 2-dimensional work can be no larger than 196 square inches (excluding the frame) and must be “show ready” – totally ready for hanging. 3-dimensional works must be less than 2,744 cubic inches and must not weigh more than 100 lbs . [i.e. 14” x 14”= 196 sq. in. (for 2D) or 14”x14”x14” = 2,744 cu. in. (for 3D)] .

All images should be jpegs only, and have a resolution which is no larger than 300 dpi and a maximum size of 1200 pixels in any direction. CALL for ENTRIES: 13th Annual Baker Arts Center

CHOPS AGAIN?

Can you imagine liking something enough to do it 13 times in a row? I have an unnatural, and probably unhealthy, addiction to lamb, but I couldn’t have it 13 times in a row. The folks producing this next call for entries, clearly love your artwork more than I love lamb chops, because this is their 13th Annual Call.

Are you surprised that I haven’t mention Art Publication in a couple of weeks? Me too. I think you all know my opinion, but since we have lots of new readers lately…I’ll restate it for the record. Opportunities for having your work published in art journals and magazines can only serve to help your career. Think of it as the marshmallows on your hot chocolate!

CALL for ENTRIES: Direct Art Magazine Annual Competition

This competition is for Direct Art Magazine, Volume 18, Fall 2011 edition. The competition is for twenty publication awards. Artist winners of the competition will, at no cost to the artist, have their work appear Volume 18 of Direct Art Magazine.

ELIGIBILITY and RESTRICTIONS: The competition is open to all artists, national and international, working in all media. All forms of painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, graphics, digital and installation art are eligible. Video artists may submit video only if the work can be represented in print form. Entrants must be 18 years of age or older to apply.

ENTRY FEE: There is a $35.00 entry fee for one to four artworks entered, presentation is by digital files, prints or 35mm slides. There is a $5.00 fee for each additional artwork above four. Details of 2D artwork count as an additional artwork. Sculptors may provide one additional view per artwork without cost. Artists accepted for publication will not be charged additional fees of any kind. Payments may be by check or money order in US funds, drawn on a US Bank, payable to SlowArt Productions, or by credit card using PayPal.

Despite all my talk about butter, chocolate and all things yummy, we really do eat fairly healthy at my house. We limit excessive intake of fats, processed white sugar and foods with unnecessary chemical additives. CALL for ENTRIES: Arte Natura

SlowArt Productions presents the group thematic exhibition, Arte Natura. This exhibition will focus on art inspired by the natural world and will be held at the Limner Gallery.

Eligible are all art forms relating to, or gaining inspiration from the world of nature. Landscapes, skyscapes, flowers, vegetables, fruits and animals are all eligible. Human images are permitted only as an elemental part of the natural environment. All artist interpretations of the natural world from the realist to the abstract and conceptual will be reviewed and considered.

ELIGIBILITY AND RESTRICTIONS: The competition is open to all artists, national and international, working in all media. All forms of painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, graphics, digital and installation art, video, etc. are eligible. Entrants must be 18 years of age or older to apply. Wall mounted works must not be taller than 96″ no wider than 120″. Sculptural work must fit through a standard height, 36″wide entry door.

DEADLINE: The final postmarked deadline is February 28, 2011. Entries must be postmarked or submitted via email by this date.

I love things in small packages. For many of my friends it conjures images of little blue boxes from Tiffany’s. For me, you can just send little blue boxes of Mariebelle chocolates and keep the jewels for yourself. This next Call may inspire your own small package.

Check out this Call for Entries from Harper College for their 34th Annual National Juried Exhbition of Small Works. Small is all about perspective, but Harper College see it as no larger than 22″ at its largest dimension. That sure includes a large amount of artwork, so sieze your opportunity…

CALL for ENTRIES:
34th Annual National Juried Art Exhibition

The College’s annual national juried exhibition highlights work selected from entries by artists from across the country. The show typically features a wide array of media ranging from photography, prints, and painting to metal, clay, glass, and fiber. The Harper College Educational Foundation sponsors this exhibit.

ELIGIBILITY: All artists over 18 living in the USA are eligible.

SIZE & MEDIA: In its largest dimension, individual artwork must be no greater than 22 inches including frame if applicable. All media excluding
jewelry, film and video/digital video are eligible. Weight limitation of 45 pounds. No work that requires special installation or instructions will be accepted.

DEADLINE: Postmarked by January 24, 2011

NOTIFICATION: February 28, 2011. Notification Cards WILL NOT be sen. Please check the website for results of the jury.

JUROR: Lanny Silverman, Chief Curator of Exhibitions for the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs, Chicago Cultural Center, will serve as the show juror. He has more than 30 years experience curating and promoting contemporary and avant-garde art forms from American and other cultures. Since 1990, he has curated over 90 exhibitions at the Chicago Cultural Center.

INTERN: Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit

So the age old question is “which came first, the chicken or the egg?” I, of course, think the question should be “which do I EAT first, the chicken or the egg?” But for lots of my readers who are facing graduation or career change, the question is “How do I get a job that requires experience if I can’t get a job to get the experience required?” Tough question. This next call might provide at least one answer…

Internship at the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit

The Internship Program at the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit (MOCAD) offers participants “hands on” training in the museum profession and a comprehensive overview of museum operations. Interns also gain insight into the national and international world of contemporary art.

The Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit Internship Program welcomes students and recent graduates who wish to broaden thir education and professional experience by working and learning in a not-for-profit museum. All MOCAD departments offer experiential education in a challenging, hands-on environment in exchange for a substantive contribution from talented and interested individuals.

The Museum presents an ambitious schedule of cutting-edge exhibitions as well as educational and outreach programs, and MOCAD interns have the unique opportunity to participate in the development and expansion of these programs and operations.

ELIGIBILITY: You must be over the age of 18 to qualify for an internship at MOCAD. Qualifications vary for each intern position and some positions may require college or graduate training and/or professional experience. In order to increase diversity in professions related to museums and the arts, the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit seeks diversity in its intern staff and provides equal opportunity to its applicants.

PAYMENT:

keep in mind that internships are unpaid.

APPLICATION:

Interns must submit an intern application form along with two letters of recommendation from professors and/or previous employers, a resume and a cover letter.

Once your file is complete, please do not call the Intern Coordinator to check on the status of your application. Only those applicants whom the departments are interested in interviewing will be contacted. The Department Supervisor will notify selected interns of acceptance at least two weeks before the start of each cycle.

DEADLINES: December 20, April 15, August 15. There are three application deadlines and selection periods per year. Internships require a minimum commitment of fourteen hours per week for three months, during which time interns may complete a number of exclusive projects as well as daily assignments. Interns also participate in departmental meetings, special events, and various educational programs, as well as attend regular museum programming including artist talks, lectures, etc.

DEPARTMENTS: Internships are available in the following departments: Administration, Development, Education, Exhibitions, Graphic Design, Media Relations, Museum Store, Programming, and Special Events. DAYS & HOURS: Interns must be able to work a minimum of two days per week/seven hours per day. The exact schedule will be determined with the department supervisor. Interns must be able to work a full term.

OPEN CALL:
Art for The Glass Coin

Your art should convey meaning, tell a story or be a picture in a poem. The Glass Coin likes photography and original art in any medium.

Editor’s Note: This online zine is run by two young editors with a love of writing and art. Take a moment to submit your work today!

ELIGIBILITY: Just one piece at a time for artists, and it should convey both themes.

ENTRY FEE: There is no entry fee.

DEADLINES: Check the website for rolling deadlines dates.

THEMES for The Glass Coin:

January & February – There is no specific theme. Explore an idea. If you have a pair of ideas you may send those as well. *Editors note: As of 12/9/10, they are full for January, but are still looking for submissions for Spring.

March – The fair maiden and the foul beast. Fair play and the cheat. We want stories of a day at the fair and odes to foul smells. Was the ball fair or foul? Tell us, who said life was fair?

April – Will you follow suit (& tie)? Will you leave it undone? Do you go in for what suits you? Or are you tied up?

In this issue they are looking beyond the clothes that make the man, and into what makes our lives simple or complicated.

May – Mother and Child. The Unicorn said, “I always thought children were fabulous monsters.” And they are. Many women build these fabulous monsters inside their bodies – it’s just so sci-fi.

One of the most elusive and powerful relationships in the human condition is the relationship we have with our mothers. Want to share yours?

SUBMISSIONS: They will accept attachments for art, and they only accept JPGS. They welcome both color and black and white. Your subject line and file name should be the same as writing submissions. For example: Beginnings-Endings – Art – The Great Image – Your Name
