This time of year is often accompanied by the primal urge to do something for others.  I wish we could find that recipe to cook up on a more regular basis, don’t you?  Check out the cookies from Red Riding Hood Edibles. Most of the women in my family have been affected by cancer in one form or the other.  This next Call gives me an opportunity to cook up a little something to give back.

Check out this Call for Entries for the Poster Contest to support the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure.  There is no entry fee, and if your design is chosen, your poster will be plastered all over NYC.  Plus, you’ll know that you helped just a little in the Race for the Cure for breast cancer.  Take a look…

It’s simple.

 

Just follow the guidelines & your artwork could be seen all over New York City as part of next year’s Race campaign.

MEDIA:  Create an amazingly eye-catching piece of artwork incorporating the words, “RUN BREAST CANCER OUT OF TOWN.”

Include New York City in your artwork. The city itself is one of the things that sets this Race apart, and they like to show it off. It doesn’t have to be the skyline, but be sure the art lets everyone know that they’re in the Big Apple.

Create an original piece of artwork that can be adapted to various proportions and sizes. Sometimes we may need something as small as a postcard and other times we may be on the Jumbotron at Macy’s.  Think flexibility when designing your artwork.

COLOR:  Pink is THE color.  It is the universal color for breast cancer and should be a part of the color scheme.  BUT, feel free to mix in other colors. The pinks used in their logo are Pantone 227 and 232.

Komen Race poster from 2009!FORMAT: Illustrator is the preferred application because vector art is the easiest to manipulate, but if you need to create your art using a different program or the old-fashioned way, by hand, then make sure that you create something that can be adapted to both vertical and horizontal formats (mainly vertical) and it must be at least 600 dpi at 8.5” x 11”.

Remember that they are going to need to add logos and some copy.  Please include your name, address, telephone number and email address with your emailed entry.

DEADLINE:  December 31, 2010. Please email your submission to vcalhoun@komennyc.org. Low resolution is best for emailing. If your artwork is selected they will require the high resolution version at that point.

RIGHTS:  Contest participants are required to assign their interests in the artwork to the Greater New York City Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure as a condition to participation. OPEN CALL: Space 237

I like fast food as much as the next girl.  But too much of anything can be bad for you.  And just sometimes, I would rather the question be “chicken or fish?” instead of “do you want fries with that?”  Open calls are a little more like table service while themed shows are a bit like going through the drive-thru–I love them both.  Check out this next call …chicken or fish?

As we approach the new year, I start thinking about wiping the slate clean and starting with no guidelines or expectations… a fresh start if you will.  Of course I am talking about my spice cabinet, but it applies to this next Call for Proposals to be a part of next year’s exhibition series, too…

CALL for PROPOSALS: The Courthouse Gallery

The Lake George Arts Project Gallery Committee invites artists to submit exhibition proposals to the Courthouse Gallery.

Strong preference is given to work created within the past two years. They welcome proposals for special exhibitions, installations, mixed media presentations, and performance art.

DEADLINE: January 31, 2011 (and it is January 31st of each year)

SUBMISSION FEE:  There is no fee to submit a proposal.

Work by Kathleen Thum in 2010SUBMISSIONS:  In lieu of submitting 35mm slides, artists may submit 10 to 12 digital images of recent work on a CD, in accordance with the following guidelines: Image Dimensions should be approximately 4 to 6 inches, and no more than 1200 x 1200 pixels (the longest dimension of the image must be no more than 1200 pixels).

The file size for each image must be no larger than 2 MB. Submit only PC-compatible files, in jpeg format, in RGB or SRGB color mode only (No CMYK). Label each file (image) with a number and title. The first nine images must begin with a zero (for example: 01title.jpg, 02title.jpg…15title.jpg).  This will ensure that they are presented chronologically and follow your Image Script. 

Spin by Dana Clancy, a former Courthouse Gallery artistPlease do not include other material on the CD. (Send only hard copy of resume, artist’s statement, and Image Script). Please do not submit material that requires software, plug-ins, extensions or other executables to be downloaded or installed. The CD must be clearly labeled with your name.

CHECKLIST: 10 to 12 images (either slides or on CD), and as a Hardcopy, please send your Resume, Artist’s Statement, Image Script (numbered to correspond with your digital images or slides).

The Image Script must have the following information: Artist’s name, title of work/image, medium, dimensions of artwork, Date of work/activity. And don’t forget to send a #10 Self-Addressed Stamped Envelope for notification letter. If you would like your materials returned to you please send appropriately sized SASE.

I am amazed by how often I am reminded that it is all about perspective.  My child loves tomato sauce and ketchup but will only eat home-grown, raw tomatoes.  He’ll put ranch dressing on virtually anything…except chicken.  But, then again, I love oranges but seriously dislike orange juice.  Go figure.  This next Call seeks your perspective.

Perspective Gallery is a not-for-profit, community-oriented cooperative whose purpose is to promote photography as fine art.  Perspective is located in Evanston, Illinois, immediately north of Chicago.

The members of Perspective Group and Photography Gallery bring a rich blend of experience and focus to the gallery.  Members’ work has been shown at galleries, colleges, libraries and in publications and juried shows across the country.  The artistic styles and techniques of the members include traditional film, digital, alternative processes, mixed media, collage and encaustic art.

COMMISSION:  Perspective Gallery will receive a 30% commission on any artwork sold during the exhibition.  Artists will receive 70% of the sales price of any work sold.

AWARDS:  One photographer will be awarded a featured exhibition at Perspective, and a $200 stipend.  The first runnerup will receive a $150 stipend, and the second runner-up will receive a $100 stipend.    continues below

Some people dance when they cook.  Some FOOD dances…remember the popcorn box from the movie screens of yesterday?  Me, I sing.  I have to fight back the sound of my father singing Hey Good Lookin’, Whatcha got Cookin’?  everytime I turn on a stove burner.  But this next Call for Entry could benefit from that inspiration.

The Pop Revolution Gallery is excited to announce Dance with Me, a juried exhibition open to artists working in all mediums.

Download the Dance with Me Prospectus!The theme for this exhibit is the Art of Dance. For inspiration, they divided this broader theme down into three categories: Romantic (i.e. The Butler by Jack Vettriano), Expressive (i.e. The Dance by Matisse) and Trained/Studio (i.e. dance portraits by Edgar Degas). These are just offered as assistance, so feel free to explore your own dance musings.

Lacing Up by Juror Carol MacConnellJUROR: Carol MacConnell creates diverse oil paintings in an array of vivid colors and composition.  Her paintings draw the viewer though various emotions from playful and enchanting to serene and peaceful.

Carol is a native of Cincinnati, OH.  She received a Bachelor of Fine Art from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio and has continued her study of painting with internationally known artists, Quang Ho, Zhaoming Wu, Carolyn Anderson and C.W. Mundy.  Her work has received numerous awards and is part of private and corporate collections throughout the United States and Europe.

JURORS:  John Lopez, Metal Sculpture Artist.  Sculptor John Lopez was born and raised in Western SD.  His western & rodeo theme bronzes have been well received & have sold all over the country from CA to NY.  For the past 10 years, John has been working on The City of Presidents project in Rapid City SD, creating bronze sculptures of the presidents. In the midst of a successful career in bronze sculpting, Lopez discovered scrap iron sculpting. See Blonde pictured above right.

James Van Nuys, a realist painter & sculptor, is one of the finest interpreters of the SD landscape.  Van Nuys was born in Whittier, CA and has lived intermittently in Rapid City,SD most of his life. He attended Wilmington College, graduating with a double major in art & music. Shawn Wilson, owner of the new Shaviq Gallery, designs beautifully unique jewelry consisting of natural stone, repurposed wire, bright colors of glass, broken jewelry, old buttons, dead watches, even tea bag tags.

Many folks feel the holidays are time for celebration.  I think the secret to a happy life is finding cause for celebration everyday.  It won’t surprise you that my family celebrates with food.  One of my favorite celebratory foods is pesto…on just about anything, especially pizza.  This next Call gives you reason to celebrate…women, just in time for Women’s History Month.

Check out this Call for Entries from the Tall Grass Arts Association called Half the Sky in celebration of Women’s History Month (March).  The entry fee is low, and you don’t have to be a woman to enter…just celebrate them.

Learn more about the Tall Grass Arts Association!Chinese proverb: “Women hold up half the sky.” Women’s History Month grew out of a small-town school event in Sonoma County, California in 1978. In 1981, Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) and Rep. Barbara Mikulski (D-Md.) co-sponsored a joint Congressional resolution proclaiming a national Women’s History Week. 

In 1987, Congress expanded the celebration to a month and March was declared Women’s History Month.  Women’s History Month is a celebration of women’s contributions to history, culture and society.  In 2011, Tall Grass Arts Association will host a national, juried exhibit celebrating Women’s History Month.

Check out some of the previous Tall Grass Exhibits!ELIGIBILITY:  All artists ages 18+ are eligible.  All media will be considered.  Original work only.  All work submitted must reflect the theme of the exhibit – the contributions of women to history, culture or society.  All work must be for sale. 

Work over 75 pounds must be hand delivered, installed and picked up by the artist or representative.  Work that requires more than 1 hour to install must be installed by artist.  Work may not have been exhibited previously at Tall Grass.

Learn more about Juror Sabrina Raaf!JUROR:  Sabrina Raaf is a Chicago-based artist working in experimental sculptural media and photography.  Her work has been presented in solo and group exhibitions at Mejan Labs (Stockholm), Stefan Stux Gallery (NYC), Ars Electronica (Linz), Opel Villas Foundation Art Center (Rüsselsheim), Museum Tinguely (Basel), Espace Landowski (Paris), Artbots 2005 (Dublin), San Jose Museum of Art, Kunsthaus Graz, ISEA (Helsinki), Klein Art Works (Chicago), The Lab (San Francisco) and Painted Bride Center (Philadelphia).

Raaf is the recipient of a Creative Capital Grant in Emerging Fields (2002) and an Illinois Arts Council Fellowship (2005 & 2001).  Reviews of her work have appeared in Art in America, Contemporary, Chicago Tribune Sunday Magazine, Leonardo, www.lab71.org, The Washington Post, and New Art Examiner.  She received an MFA in Art and Technology from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (1999) and is currently an Assistant Professor in the School of Art and Design at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Vacation time is over, and I am in a food coma.  I may never look at sweet potato casserole the same way again.  For those of you that survived the holidays without a permanent taste aversion, this next call is another opportunity in NYC.

Check out the Call for Entries from The Ernest Rubenstein Gallery and the Educational Alliance called The Urban Situation.  The entry fee is very low, but the number of slots they have to fill is equally low.  Could be a great opportunity, but do your homework so you know what kind of work they want!

The Ernest Rubenstein Gallery – Educational Alliance is seeking submissions for “The Urban Situation” a group exhibition of 20 artworks.  Open to artists working in any 2-dimensional medium (not photography). Opening reception Thursday, Feb. 10, 6-8pm.

ART COMPETITION: photoSPIVA 2011

EXPERIENCE by the POUND

There is something to be said for tradition and experience.  I traditionally gain 7 pounds from Thanksgiving to New Years, but that isn’t the best example, I suppose.  I just can’t resist the sweet potato cassarole.  However, the experience gained by doing something year after year better equips me to tackle the problems and make it better the next year, in theory.  This next call proves that after 30 years, some people just know how to get it right.

Founded in 1977, PhotoSpiva has become the longest-running photographic competition of its kind in the U.S.  As stated by the founders, the objective of PhotoSpiva is to “present an exhibition of excellence in photography, celebrating the scope and vigorous activity of today’s contemporary photographers.”

Co-Founder Jim Mueller stated, “We have intentionally avoided any categorization of either photographers or their work in setting forth the criteria for this competitive.” PhotoSpiva welcomes any photographic process as long as it is original artwork and has not been previously exhibited at Spiva Center for the Arts. This philosophy has created an unbiased forum for exhibiting and educating photographers. The PhotoSpiva prospectus, promotional materials and exhibition brochures are distributed to professional photographers, emerging artists, educators, students, and amateur photography enthusiasts throughout the United States.

ELIGIBILITY:  PhotoSpiva is open to any amateur or professional photographer in the United States or its territories.  Submitted images must be the photographer’s own work, and it is the sole responsibility of the photographer to obtain written releases from any recognizable person(s) depicted. Work derived from any photographic process — traditional, digital, or photo-based mixed media — is eligible as long as the work is original and has never been exhibited at George A. Spiva Center for the Arts.

SPECIFICATIONS:  Digital entries should be JPG files at least 4 megapixels (height or width 2000 pixels or greater) in RGB color mode.  The juror will review all online entries and select images for display at Spiva Center for the Arts. PhotoSpiva will notify artists of acceptance. Accepted images — only those chosen by the juror — must be matted with presentation-quality white matboard (minimum 2-inch border), framed in standard black metal frames, and wired for hanging. No off-white or color mats will be accepted. Framed exhibition prints must arrive at Spiva Center for the Arts by 5:00 pm CST February 22, 2011. Artists are responsible for shipping costs to and from Spiva.

ENTRY FEE:
$40 for up to 5 photos.
Additional images are $10 each.

JUROR:  Anthony Bannon (born 1943) is the director of George Eastman House, International Museum of Photography & Film, located in Rochester, N.Y. He has held that position since 1996, previously serving as director of the Burchfield-Penney Arts Center and director of Cultural Affairs on the campus of the State University of New York at Buffalo, both located in Buffalo, N.Y.

George Eastman House is the world’s oldest museum of photography and largest museum of photography and film. During Bannon’s tenure the museum launched three internationally renowned graduate and post-graduate schools of film and photograph preservation and conservation.

Bannon has lectured at museums, colleges, and festivals worldwide. He currently serves as chairman of the Lucie Awards/International Photography Awards and was awarded the Golden Career Award in 2007 by the FOTOfusion Festival of Photography & Digital Imaging for his “far-reaching leadership and scholarship in the cultural community.”

GOBBLE, QUACK, OINK!

Sometimes you have to take a risk to have anything worth having.  On Thanksgiving, risk takes on a different status altogether.  We aren’t a turkey family.  We have dabbled in duck, but we usually succomb to consuming a honey glazed ham.  But, to all those that deep fry turkeys or make their own turduken, bravo!  It always takes risk to reap serious reward.  This call is no different.

Check out this Call for Entries for the Charlatan Ink Art Prize.  The entry fee is a whopping $50 per piece entered, but the judges are exemplary…and the Grand Prize is $25,000.  And I think the second place prize is even better.  Take a chance…

CALL for ENTRIES:  Charlatan Ink Art Prize

The Charlatan Ink Art Prize for the Visual Arts will be held biennially in New York from 2011 onwards, but in an innovative twist will be traveling every other year around the globe.  Possible venues for 2012, 2014, 2016 and 2018 are in chronological order Brisbane/Australia; Graz/Austria; Cracow/Poland and Shanghai/China.

Learn more about the Charlatan Ink Art Prize!ELIGIBILITY:  The Charlatan Ink Art Prize for the Visual Arts is open to all artists practicing visual art.  Art works submitted for the Charlatan Ink Art Prize must conform to each year’s specified theme. Artists may interpret the theme in any way that fits with their art practices, however the theme has to be visually present within all artistic interpretations.

THEME:  ‘Where do we come from? What are we? Where are we going?’

MEDIA:  Accepted:  painters (in any medium & stylistic expression from classical painting to collages to illustrations to graffiti to drawing to print); photographers (film/digital); sculptors (3D works/jewellery); film-makers (video/film-camera/animation film); conceptual artists (working in all mediums mentioned above); and crafts (from pottery to weaving to carpet-looming).

ENTRY FEE:  US$ 50.00 (including TAX) handling + administration fee has to be paid for each work entered. Two works can only be entered in each year’s competition. An individual work may not be submitted more than once. Should this occur, the Charlatan Ink Partners reserve the right to disqualify the entry.

JUDGES: 

Anthony Lister‘s “tireless approach to living is an unrelenting approach to art. What is evident in his work is the inability to remove a man’s life from his creations.  Studio, gallery and museum shows aside, his name and imagery is on street corners worldwide accessing a massive audience by way of stickers, aerosol paint and all manner of markers.  His paintings, drawings, sculptures and happenings pull from his experiences as a youth in Australia and participating in the repetition as a father of two. Superheroes, skateboarding, graffiti, Australian gangster celebrities, television, jail birds, tattoos, the internet, pop and advertising resurface in his art practice.”  from Too Heavy For Superman by Joseph Allen Shea.

Judge Winston SmithWinston Smith:  From 1977 to the present: has worked on numerous Punk record covers, posters, logos and flyers for American, British and Italian bands including Dead Kennedys, D.O.A., Green Day, Lard, and spoken word projects for Jello Biafra. Also designed album art for Ben Harper, Tijuana No, Alternative Tentacles projects, Emily the Strange, George Carlin and others.  Books include three volumes of Collage Art published by Last Gasp of San Francisco, as well as works in countless other books as covers and inside (both as illustrations and for personal interviews), including illustrations for magazines such as The New Yorker, Playboy, Spin, The Progressive, Mother Jones, Amazing Stories, etc.

Marlene Antico has many years of experience in sourcing and collecting fine art for private and corporate collections.  As a professional art consultant, she assists her clients to develop a comprehensive, high-quality collection and in the sale of their artwork on a consignment basis when required.   Marlene Antico’s expert guidance ensures that both the experienced collector and the first time buyer derive satisfaction from their art purchases. She also works in tandem with architects and interior designers with sourcing work for their clients.

Judge JB BerkowJB Berkow: “I have been exhibiting and selling my work for more than forty years. In 1976 at age 27 I founded the most well-known cooperative gallery in the country, “Touchstone Gallery,” located in Washington, D.C.  My work is in the permanent collection of the Vatican Contemporary Art Collection…not bad for a nice Jewish girl! 

It has never been enough for me to show and sell my own work, for whatever reason I have always been interested in promoting other artists’ work. That is the reason that I went on to found “Frenchman’s Art Gallery and Studios, Inc.” in 1994 and opened “RosettaStone Fine Art Gallery” and “RosettaStone Corporate Art Consulting.”

Ed McCormack, a former columnist and feature writer for Rolling Stone, and one of the original contributing editors of Andy Warhol’s Interview, has written extensively on art and popular culture for the Village Voice and numerous other publications. Presently, with his wife Jeannie McCormack, he co-publishes the New York art journal Gallery & Studio.  McCormack’s most pressing present project is a memoir called “Hoodlum Heart,” of which he says, “It’s all about what it was like to be the test dummy for the crash and burn generation, an epic work of shameless name-dropping and self-libel that is bound to create a scandal.”

Judge Bing DaweBing Dawe:  Since graduating from the University of Canterbury School of fine Arts in the mid 1970s Bing Dawe has exhibited extensively throughout New Zealand and overseas.  He has held over 40 solo exhibitions including a major survey exhibition at the Robert McDougall Art Gallery in his home town of Christchurch in 1999.  His work is held in most public and private collections in New Zealand. In 1999 he was the winner of a major national art award, The Visa Gold James Wallace Award.

The Winner of the inaugural Charlatan Ink Art Prize for the Visual Arts 2011 shall receive the Charlatan Ink Art Prize Silver Ink Well and US$ 25,000.00 in Prize Money.

The artist with the second highest point score awarded by the jury shall receive the Charlatan Ink Encouragement Prize, which includes a 6 week artist residency at the Carlton Arms Hotel, New York*, a Canon G11 Camera and US$ 1,000.00.

Furthermore Endeavor Printing will print an exhibition catalog (softcover, max. 75 pages in an edition of 200) for an exhibition the artist might undertake within the next twelve months of the Second Prize win.

The artist with the third highest point score awarded by the jury shall receive a twelve months art expose on the CHARLATAN INK Website, hosting the artist’s portfolio.

To encourage galleries to forward to their artists all relevant information concerning the Charlatan Ink Art Prize, Charlatan Ink Publishing & Endeavor Printing have committed themselves to print for the gallery that has encouraged the Winner to participate in the Charlatan Ink Art Prize, a first class exhibition catalog in an edition of 300 copies (softcover, max. 100 pages).
