CALL for ENTRIES: Small Works Exhibition

The Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts & Sciences encourages emerging artists & established artists to participate in the Small Works Exhibition. The purpose of the exhibition is to showcase small works that reflect personal vision.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to U.S. Residents only, 18 years and older.

MEDIA: 2-D work max size 12” x 12” sq. 3-D work max size 8” x 8” x 8”.

DEADLINE: November 1, 2011

ENTRY FEE: There is an entry fee of $20.00 for up to four works. Works in series count as separate works if they take up more than 12” x 12” square. U.S funds only, payable by check, money order or credit card (MasterCard or Visa only). All fees are NON-REFUNDABLE.

JUROR: Michael Cagno – Executive Director of the Noyes Museum of Art in Oceanville, NJ. Michael recieved his BFA from Rowan University and Masters in Museum Management from Seton Hall University. He is also currently an adjunct professor at the Richard Stockton College of NJ.

AWARDS: Cash awards will be announced at the exhibition’s opening reception: Best in Show – $250, Second Place – $100, Honorable Mention (2) – $25. Note: Artists who win a prize and are not in attendance of the opening reception will receive their check by mail.

SALES: A commission of 33 1/3% to the Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts and Sciences is required. The artist’s retail price should reflect this commission. All works must be priced accordingly or marked NOT FOR SALE (NFS).

CALL for ENTRIES: 27th Annual International

The Annual International Exhibition is a juried competition organized by the Department of Art and Art History at The University of Texas at Tyler. Internationally known artists, curators, and scholars have served in past years as jurors selecting works for the exhibition created by some of the best contemporary artists living today. Every year 3 – 6 works are awarded a cash prize or are purchased by the Department from this exhibition. The purchase awards have made it possible for the University to build a collection of over 250 contemporary works of art from outstanding contemporary artists. This collection serves as an educational teaching resource and is exhibited in fine art teaching areas and other areas throughout the campus.

ELIGIBILITY: All artists, 18 years of age or older.

MEDIA: Any two-dimensional work including paintings, drawings, prints, and photographs are acceptable completed within the last three (3) years.

NOTIFICATION: December 16, 2011

ENTRY FEE: $30 for 3 works

JUROR: Karl Umlauf holds a BFA from UT Austin and MFA from Cornell University. His work is inspired by structural forms of land and contains imagery from petroleum refineries, salvage yards, and steel mills. He uses color and imagery to convey rhythm, properties of tension, and physics, with his most famous works consisting of large fiberglass sculptures and cast paper formations. Karl Umlauf’s work has been included in exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art, New York City; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City; Philadelphia Museum of Art; Fogg Art Museum in Cambridge, Massachusetts; and New Orleans Museum of Art. He is currently the Artist-in-Residence and a teaching professor at Baylor University.

AWARDS: Cash and purchase awards will be made and works added to the UT Tyler Department of Art and Art History permanent collection.

JUROR: Alexandra Schwartz is the Curator of Contemporary Art at the Montclair Art Museum where she is currently organizing a series of solo exhibitions and a major traveling exhibition, New Order: Art and Politics in the 1990s (Fall 2013). She was previously the coordinator of The Museum of Modern Art’s Modern Women’s Project and curator of Mind and Matter: Alternative Abstractions, 1940 to Now at MoMA PS1.

Schwartz is the author of Ed Ruscha’s Los Angeles (MIT Press, 2010) and has contributed to various journals, anthologies and exhibition catalogues. She has taught at Columbia University and in the Education Departments at MoMA and the Whitney Museum of American Art. She received a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan and a B.A. from Harvard University

There was a time when I was scared of asparagus. No, really. My only childhood exposure to asparagus was with the canned variety–grayish green, slimy, salty, icky. I managed to go a span of TWO DECADES without eating it again. I had developed such a taste aversion that irrationally, somewhere in the back of my brain, I thought consuming it would have dire consequences. Luckily, someone served me cream of asparagus soup under the guise of cream of broccoli soup, and now I am addicted. Blanched and marinated in balsamic vinigrette then served cold…I could eat it every day. This next call seeks to explore YOUR fears. Anybody want to talk about bloody beets?

What food helps you get to sleep quickly? Well, honestly, almost any food helps me sleep because I am usually so exhausted that I can fall sleep after eating virtually anything. The idea of warm milk is pretty nauseating, and I’ve never developed a taste for hot tea, either. I have friends that swear by melatonin supplements, and a few that are addicted to over-the-counter PM drugs. Those drugs give me a hangover, and melatonin just doesn’t do anything for me. JURORS: As Executive Director of OVAC since 1999, Julia Kirt has worked to create resources for rural, urban, emerging and experienced artists and transform Oklahoma’s valuation of artists. She was honored as the “Emerging Leader” by the Americans for the Arts in 2008 and participated in the 2009 Leadership Institute organized by the National Alliance for Media Arts and Culture funded by The Andy Warhol Foundation. Kirt completed an MA in Art History at the University of Oklahoma and earned a BA in Communication Studies from Macalester College in St. Paul, MN.

Kelly Foshee received her MFA from the University of Tulsa in 2002. Her work has been exhibited in galleries and museums across the country. For many years, she has served as a teaching artist for the Philbrook Museum of Art, as well as an adjunct instructor of printmaking at the University of Tulsa. She currently works as the studio art and art history instructor for the Tulsa School of Arts and Sciences.

Artists may offer up their artwork for sale.
While Satellite Galleries are primarily an exhibition space,

I prefer to drink my soup. Chowder and stew? Give me a spoon and a bowl, but soup calls for the perfect cup. The handle has to be big enough for me to slide my four fingers through, warming my palm against the cup. Should be sturdy enough to keep the soup warm while I sip, but not too heavy to hold for the duration. This next Call might give me a way to drink my soup out of a beautiful piece of art. Kieffer has exhibited her work internationally in juried and invitational exhibitions, as well as taught workshops around the country at craft centers and universities.
