Don’t throw tomatoes. I never search my own blog history before I write these segues. So unknown to me, I might be contradicting/repeating myself, but I am always being sincere–I swear. Having said that, I remember having written about this topic many times. That’s right, it is time for what-would-I-be-if-I-were-food. This week, I’m thinking I would be an egg. Really. They are ultimate in adaptive foods. They are in everything from cookies to lasagna. My family OF THREE now eats approximately 3 dozen a week. Really. This episode of what-would-I-be-if-I-were-food was brought to you be this self-portrait Call–the ultimate what-would-I-be-if-I-had-only-one-shot-to-show-the-world experience. Me, Myself & I

Social, cultural, political, gender, age and sexual orientation are part of our identities as individuals. Each of these elements play a part in how we identify within various constructs such as family, workforce, community and greater society.

The aim of this exhibition is to feature self-portraits that best depict our own individual identity and the ability to be a camellia of uniqueness or to fit within the statuesque.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists

MEDIA: Must be 8” x 10”. No landscapes orientations accepted. B&W or color photography, digital photography or illustrations, and photos or scanned replications of drawings, paintings or sculptures. Self-portraits will not be returned; do not submit original prints/artwork.

NOTIFICATION: “All artists will be featured. Artists are welcome to submit as many self-portraits as they wish; however, the gallery can only guarantee a minimum of six photos per artist will be displayed. Editor’s Note: According the prospectus, this is a National Juried exhibit; however, it also claims to be open to ANY artist, and no juror is listed. The quote above indicates it is a form of all-hung show. So, my guess is it is only juried for awards. However, the awards are not defined in the prospectus either. Normally I wouldn’t publish a Call without getting all of these questions answered…but I HAVE shown at this gallery myself and it was a FANTASTIC experience. If you’re looking for a line on your resume, this is a great academic gallery with an historically great curatorial vision.

The only thing missing from California cuisine is butter. It is characterized by local, fresh ingredients and foods low in saturated fats and high in fresh vegetables and fruits with lean meats and seafood from the California coast with special attention paid to presentation–delicious & beautiful. But why leave out the butter? And, if it is from local, grass-fed cows, even better. Can’t we just learn to play well with others? I am addicted to salt. I am. I’ve given up most vices, but salt is here to stay. I have unnaturally low blood pressure (70/50), and my doctor suspects that is WHY I crave salt. So what does one do when faced with a salt addiction? Become a salt aficionado, of course. There is a rainbow-hued world of salt options out there. My current favorite is Hawaiian alaea salt which derives its pinkish or brownish hue from it’s volcanic clay rich in iron oxide. This next Call is all about the hue as well. Hue CAN tell the difference, hehehe…

CALL for ENTRIES:
Hue

Color in photography has symbolism and meaning that travels beyond what you see.

More than the combination of red, green, and blue or cyan, magenta, yellow, and black, color is a visual tool for non-verbal communication: a viewer’s perception and connection to an image can be significantly enhanced by a certain hue.

Strip away the subject matter from a photograph, and what is left behind? Two things. The underlying geometry of the photo, its composition or balance, and the color. The design and geometry make an image coalesce, become solid, and enduring. Whereas the color carries the opposite message, one of transience and impermanence. That’s because colors are not inherent in objects, but change and evolve with the changing light – and we photographers know, light is always changing.

Hues must contrast or complement one another to create a successful image, a delicate dance of visual balance. For this exhibit we are looking for works that exemplify the innate power of color. Images that drive us through hue to an emotive response.

JUROR: Al Satterwhite started working as a photographer at a major daily newspaper in Florida while in high school, covering major news stories in the Southeast. After a year as the Governor of Florida’s personal photographer, he started a career as a freelance magazine photographer. Over the next 10 years he worked on assignment for almost every major magazine (Automobile, Car & Driver, Fortune, Geo, Life, Look, Money, Newsweek, People, Playboy, Sports Illustrated, Time, Travel & Leisure, to name a few).

His photographic prints are in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery, Houston Fine Art Museum, Santa Barbara Museum of Art, Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), George Eastman House, Polaroid Collection, National Museum of African American History and Culture and numerous private collections.

In recent years he has focused his attention on making films. He has shot commercials, features & award-winning feature shorts as Director/Cameraman. He is currently working on several book and museum projects.

There is some humor to be found in the idea that someone invested in eating organically would also want a food so tortured & processed that it can spell out words. And, I don’t believe anyone is REALLY teaching their children to read with soup. So do we really need to communicate with food, literally, or am I just a huge hypocrite for constantly preach about the transformative & communicative power of food? Okay, I’m a hypocrite, ha. Food deprivation is not new to me. In the South, women are born dieters, as was I for half my years. I no longer participate, opting for whole foods and a healthier self image. But, I was still dumbfounded when I read a study that proposes eating from a red dish, as opposed to the white ones I currently use, might result in smaller consumption. Claudia Seymour is a masterful still life painter in oil and pastel. She is a member of prestigious organizations such as Allied Artist of America, CT Pastel Society, and Audobon Artists. Claudia is an experienced juror and an active member of the art community. She has served as president of the Salmagundi Club in New York City for the past six years. She has exhibited in over 150 juried national and international exhibitions.

Growing up, meat was the focal point of all meal preparation. Everything revolved around how long the meatloaf, turkey, fried chicken etc. had to cook. Every plate had to be picture perfect–1/2 meat (it is the South afterall), 1/4 starch (usually potatoes), 1/4 vegetable (often fried). JUROR: Melanie Craven has exhibited her photographic work both in the United States and abroad. She was first published in Hayen’s Ferry Review in 2003 with her Identical Otherness series that she continues to work on in collaboration with her identical twin Michelle. In 2006 she was included in Collotype Past, Present and Future in conjunction with the exhibition at The Foyer Gallery at the Center for Fine Print Research in Bristol, England. Recently, her work was included in Jill Enfield’s Guide to Photographic Alternative Processes. Over a decade ago Melanie Craven and her sister Michelle founded Tilt Gallery. And in 2012 with nearly a 100 exhibitions under her belt, Melanie Craven moved Tilt from its home in Phoenix to the Arts District in Old Town Scottsdale. In Tilts new location Craven continues to offer individual artist exhibitions, juried and group shows and serves the local art community.

AWARDS: All images will be reproduced in an exhibition catalogue available for purchase. A Juror’s Choice and Director’s Choice will also be announced and both winners will receive a free copy of the catalogue.

SALES: Kiernan Gallery no longer takes commission on sold works. The Kiernan Gallery DOES have incentive to sell your work. They believe that if artists are paying a submission fee, the gallery should not also take a portion of the sale. They do reserve the right to negotiate 20% in order to make a sale.

Coconut snow creme anyone? I’m trying to come up with a logical way to combat my winter frustration. Because I live near a little-traveled corner of the National Park, I STILL have access to untrodden-snow in area that is as free from harsh chemicals and pesticides as one can approximate in 2014. So, I will use coconut milk instead of heavy cream and dream of a sitting on a Florida beach while writing during the latest bout of snow showers. ENTRY FEE: The non-refundable application fee is $32 (for current NAA members the entry fee is $27) and is payable online by credit card.

SALES: Photographs exhibited in “Camera USA” may be available for purchase or listed as NFS (not for sale). Once stated, neither the price nor title of the photograph may be changed. The NAA processes sales and will retain a 30% commission on all photographs sold during the exhibition. Proceeds from sales support the NAA’s exhibition programs. Photographers’ proceeds will be mailed. Photographers generally receive their checks within three weeks from the close of the exhibition.

JURORS: Dan Biferie is Chair of the School of Photography at Daytona State College and a Senior Professor at the Southeast Center for Photographic Studies in Daytona Beach, Florida. Biferie was the Founding Director of the Daytona Beach Community College Gallery of Fine Arts and organized more than 500 exhibitions, lectures, workshops and seminars during his twelve-year tenure.

Clyde Butcher is an award winning large-format view camera photographer well known for his black and white landscape photographs and, in particular, his photographs of the Florida Everglades and Big Cypress National Preserve. Among the many awards he has received is the Hall of Fame Award, which is the highest honor the State of Florida can give to a private citizen, and the Ansel Adams Conservation Award from the Sierra Club.

Frederick Voss is a Museum Consultant and retired Smithsonian Senior Historian and Curator. His work at the Smithsonian included conceiving and organizing exhibitions around historical themes and authoring catalogues and books in connection with the exhibitions. Voss served on the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery staff from 1971 until his retirement in 2004.

AWARDS: Up to 50 photos will be included in the exhibition. The $5,000 National Photography Award will be presented to one artist. The award winner will receive two-nights hotel in Naples, FL to attend a preview reception and award presentation on Friday, August 8, 2014. Round-trip airfare will be provided to a winning artist who lives outside FL. A winner residing in Florida will receive a $300 travel stipend.

SALES: The NAA processes sales and will retain a 30% commission on all photographs sold during the exhibition.
