SUNNY SIDE UP
hold the salsa

Don’t throw tomatoes.  I never search my own blog history before I write these segues.  So unknown to me, I might be contradicting/repeating myself, but I am always being sincere–I swear.  Having said that, I remember having written about this topic many times.  That’s right, it is time for what-would-I-be-if-I-were-food.  This week, I’m thinking I would be an egg.  Really.  They are ultimate in adaptive foods.  They are in everything from cookies to lasagna.  My family OF THREE now eats approximately 3 dozen a week.  Really.  This episode of what-would-I-be-if-I-were-food was brought to you be this self-portrait Call–the ultimate what-would-I-be-if-I-had-only-one-shot-to-show-the-world experience.  Enough hyphens; I digress…

Check out this Call for Entries from the ENMU Runnels Gallery for Me, Myself & I, a self-portrait show.  No entry fee, and this is a great institution.  Take a look…

Me, Myself & I

Social, cultural, political, gender, age and sexual orientation are part of our identities as individuals. Each of these elements play a part in how we identify within various constructs such as family, workforce, community and greater society.

The aim of this exhibition is to feature self-portraits that best depict our own individual identity and the ability to be a camellia of uniqueness or to fit within the statuesque.

ELIGIBILITY:  Open to all artists

MEDIA:  Must be 8” x 10”. No landscapes orientations accepted. B&W or color photography, digital photography or illustrations, and photos or scanned replications of drawings, paintings or sculptures. Self-portraits will not be returned; do not submit original prints/artwork.

May 1, 2014

NOTIFICATION:  “All artists will be featured. Artists are welcome to submit as many self-portraits as they wish; however, the gallery can only guarantee a minimum of six photos per artist will be displayed. If space permits, more photos will be used from each submitting artist.” — quoted from from the Me, Myself & I prospectus

ENTRY FEE:  No fee to enter

SALES:  Artwork will not be sold. (or returned)

Editor’s Note:  According the prospectus, this is a National Juried exhibit; however, it also claims to be open to ANY artist, and no juror is listed.  The quote above indicates it is a form of all-hung show.  So, my guess is it is only juried for awards.  However, the awards are not defined in the prospectus either.  Normally I wouldn’t publish a Call without getting all of these questions answered…but I  HAVE shown at this gallery myself and it was a FANTASTIC experience.  If you’re looking for a line on your resume, this is a great academic gallery with an historically great curatorial vision.

If you were a cheese, what would you be?  Wholesome mid-Western cheddar, stinky Limberger?  I think I would be a salty and tart goat’s milk feta or maybe a pucker-inducing blue.  I frequently contemplate my alter ego in food form.  Maybe I need to find a more productive hobby, ha.  This next Call wants to know about your alter ego.  I love this theme…

Check out this Call for Entries for Alter Ego from the Kiernan Gallery (Lexington, Virginia). The entry is very reasonable, and the juror is active and easily researched. Take a look…

Self-portraiture is often used to explore and manipulate identity. There is a performative aspect to this genre. By turning the camera on oneself the photographer is brought out from behind their lens, and able to choose how they would like to the world to see them.

The photographer invites judgment and critique on not only their artistic message, but also their appearance and demeanor. For this exhibition, The Kiernan Gallery seeks self-portraits that provide insight into the “second self” that appears when artist becomes subject.

a day…

I have fought a lifelong battle with apples. I like Granny Smiths, but I avoid the mealiness of Red Delicious.  I like apple pie and apple butter, but I try to avoid the massive refined sugar intake.  I have a newly found love of home-dried October Black apples from our local orchard, but I am still coming to grips with the other preparations.  This next Call wants to see if you might be the apple of your own eye.  Investigate…

Check out this Call for Entries from the Darkroom Gallery (Essex Junction, VT) for id – The Object of Self. The self-portrait: Is it your compulsion?  Your obsession? An impulse?

Was it out of necessity (the mandatory Photo 101 exercise, a portrait for the office newsletter, or because you needed to self-promote)?  Is it the autobiographical record you decided was best told in image?

Sometimes we have to step in front of the lens – we can’t seem to communicate what we want to others, or maybe we’re just the most convenient choice for a model (the least expensive, for sure).  Even if we got there by default, there is no one better able to translate our vision to the camera than ourselves.  Perhaps you were experimenting with persona or striving for a personal perfection?  Were you desperately seeking Self?

Learn more about the Darkroom Gallery online! For those willing to dig deep and bare all, the self-portrait is a reward for your bravery – because whether you love it or hide it in the depths of your archives for decades, you’ve learned from it.  Whatever your intention, there is nothing closer to an authentic portrait, than to sit both behind and in front of the lens.  And whether for totally narcissistic or completely humble intents – you have to admit, it’s you.

ELIGIBILITY: Entrants must be at least 18 years old. If younger, you must have a legal guardian make the submission for you.
