As Spring heads toward Summer, my house is in full-on busy mode. With a teenager, 3+ business endeavors and a small-scale entertainment career, sometimes I just crave the opportunity to cook a full meal. JURORS: Jeannine Falino, Juror for Visual Arts, is Adjunct Curator at the Museum of Arts and Design in NYC and is a paintings consultant at the Museum of the City of NY. She was previously Curator of American Decorative Arts and Sculpture at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Jeannine has published and lectured widely on American art, especially decorative arts & contemporary craft, and teaches the history of American ceramics at the Rhode Island School of Design, Providence, RI.

Alice Fogel, Juror for Writers and Musicians, is the State Poet Laureate of New Hampshire (USA) 2014 – 2019 and recent winner of the Nicholas Shaffner Award for Music in Literature. Alice is the author of Strange Terrain: A Poetry Handbook for the Reluctant Reader (Hobblebush Books, 2009). Alice teaches creative writing and poetry at Keene State College, Keene, NH & Landmark College, Putney, VT.

AWARDS: This is a free one-month residency. Your residency offers free WiFi, maid service, $1,000 pesos food stipend & utilities. You will are responsible for laundry, transportation, entertainment & add’l food. International calls can be made via skype.

I’m craving purple potatoes. Potatoes have become scarce in my house lately. Paranoid about my family’s long history of diabetes, we are trying to limit our starch intake to see if my current symptoms can be controlled through diet. Because we already cut out gluten, I don’t really miss bread. We’ve never consumed a lot of rice & prefer spaghetti squash or zucchini noodles to pasta. But oh how I miss the potatoes– the beautiful, majestic purple ones particularly. I’m sneaking them in as the crust for quiche & pot pies, but the chips & fries & mash are all gone. I have to reserve all things majestic for this next call. Love this one…

Dr. Zona has received a number of national honors including the Gari Melchers Medal in 1996 for his outstanding contribution to American Art and culture. He is the author of numerous articles on art and art history and he is a major contributor to the recent Abrams publication Master Paintings from The Butler Institute of American Art.

AWARDS: 1st place $400, 2nd place $200, & 3rd place $100, plus honorable mentions. Cash award winners are offered an exhibition to show their work at Majestic Galleries in 2015. Not every weed is to be plucked and discarded. Hopefully no one is spraying chemicals on their garden--either to fertilize OR remove pests; however, I DO want to encourage you to remember that not every weed needs to be removed either. Chickweed is a perfect example. If you’re lucky enough to have it sprout in your garden, don’t weed it…eat it. It is ramp season in the Smoky Mountains. I am thrilled to have a locally-grown, fresh vegetable of any sort after the winter of snow & ice we just endured–even if it gives us all dragon breath. If you aren’t familiar, ramps are spring onions with a strong garlic smell and onion flavor. They are called “spring leeks” elsewhere. We’re using them in salads, soups, casseroles and atop nearly every dish consumed in my house right now. You name it, we’re finding a way to eat them. Another sign of Spring is this next Call. Born and raised in Oklahoma, Deibler’s passion for landscapes, mountains in particular began after seeing the 1956 movie The Mountain as a young boy.

Rosalux is a cooperative art gallery that was founded in Minneapolis in 2002. The gallery is home to 20 artists whose work is well known both nationally & internationally, featured in various major collections, and who have individually received numerous prestigious awards and grant recognitions.

Meyerowitz has worked in the art community for twenty years. She was the owner of the celebrated Ariel Meyerowitz Gallery, first located in SoHo and then in Chelsea until 2006.

Before her gallery she was Associate Director for the James Danziger Gallery in New York, Director of the Scott Nichols Gallery in San Francisco, interned at the Friends of Photography/Ansel Adams Center and was a freelance Art Reviewer at the Bay Area Times. Meyerowitz is the daughter o f photographer, Joel
Meyerowitz and artist, Vivian Bower.

AWARDS: The juror will choose approximately 35 photographs for the exhibition. First, second and third place prizes will be awarded. At least two honorable mentions will be given at the discretion of the juror.

Award winners will be announced on their website prior to the Opening Reception.

In a former life, I worked as a sous chef on a charter sailboat in the Carribean for a peg-legged captain with a Sharpie parrot tattoo on his head. It is all strangely true. That WAS my official job title…the rest too. What I really did was spoon homemade chicken salad into avocado halves. I served it to wealthy day trippers along with a cross-hatched mango half turned inside out, known as a hedgehog. Sous chef? Semantics I say. Grocery shopping is often a small world experience for me. I’ll be thinking of having teriyaki wings, and my husband will come home with the chicken. JUROR: Wim Roefs, independent curator, art consultant and exhibition designer as well as owner of if ART Gallery in Columbia, SC, will serve as juror for A Sense of Place 2014.

*In my previous life as a gallery owner, Wim was a great collector. You always wanted him at your opening because if the work was spectacular, you might just sell something. He has great taste. It has been about 12 years since I saw his personal collection, but it was fantastic as well.

AWARDS: $750 Best of Show Award & two $500 Juror’s Awards.

SALES: Sales will be encouraged, and all works are assumed to be available for purchase unless designated “Not For Sale” (NFS). A 35% gallery commission will be charged on sales of all exhibited artwork.
