a little KITCHEN

So, the move is complete.  My husband & I have downsized our home by half as the next step in our being completely mobile.  I am currently referring to my home as “box city” for reasons that I imagine are obvious.  Part of the move included purging my life of all the “stuff” weighing me down, including kitchen gadgets and single-use appliances.  The lack of stuff has necessarily affected my cooking as well, encouraging simplicity, whole foods & clean eating.  It is a new place, a new space & an opportunity for a fresh perspective.  This next Call, although un-themed, reinforces the idea of a unique sense of place.  Take a look…

Check out this Call for Entries from the Gertrude Herbert Institute of Art (Augusta, GA) for A Sense of Place. This is a gorgeous venue, and I always appreciate an academic show.  Don’t miss this one…

gardens in bloom

I pursued the holy grail of dining in the Holy City recently.  My meal began on the porch of a grand Southern home in historic Charleston, SC overlooking a garden of heirloom blooms cultivated on the property.  My meal began with a hand-propagated, rare tomato varietal and a gorgeous regional wine fermented from heirloom grapes.  Even blind folded, I couldn’t have expected to be anywhere other than one of the sparkling jewel cities of the culinary culture to be experienced only in the South.  The sense of place amplifies the food experience just as the sense of place in this one-of-a-kind Southern gallery exalts every work found within.  Claim your spot now…

dreaming?

I was out of town this week, and traveling makes eating out necessary.  But, I was trying to behave so I’ll fit back into my Spring clothes again soon.  At one restaurant, I ordered a California Chicken Salad which included mixed greens, mandarin oranges, dried cranberries, blue cheese, candied pecans, croutons, grilled chicken and balsamic vinaigrette.  Mine was sans the blue cheese & pecans, but I am still wondering what made it Californian.  The oranges?  I still don’t know.  Check out this next Call with a name that references place, but it isn’t really the theme.  Interesting…

Frequently, the sense memory I have with food OFTEN brings me to a specific place.  Antipasti reminds me of romantic living room picnics with my sweet husband that have become the tradition of our marriage.  Boiled peanuts remind me of combing the flea markets of South Carolina for hidden treasures.  Soft, doughy pretzels remind me of laughing hysterically with my kid on the Scrambler at the State Fair.  This next Call’s exhibit is located in a fantastic space of its own.  Take a look!
