I am annoyed by late-night fast food commercials because my will power doesn’t need the test. But my child falls for those digitally-enhanced, staged food product advertisements everytime. I cannot tell you how many cereals I have bought for him because they “look yummy,” only to find out they are artificially-flavored cardboard. This next Call for Entries shows the positive side of digital manipulaton.

Editor’s Note: I know how many of you roll your eyes every time you read that the media for a show excludes computer-generated work, new media and digitally manipulated artwork and photography. If you want more opportunities and to be accepted into the same shows with mainstream traditional media, DO NOT let shows like this one pass you by. This show is made for you. No whining… just do it.

CALL FOR ENTRIES: Digital Concept / Digital Construct

This is a digital world. We are surrounded, engulfed by, and reliant upon digital media. It has become a way of life and a way of seeing. As digitally manipulated images become the norm, their fantasy perspectives are becoming the new reality. Is there such a thing as truth and lies in digital art photographs, or is it all just possibility?

Our capacities and aptitudes for creating digital photographic art far exceed what we had imagined. We’re tempted by new technologies – camera phones and point and shoots, the next 80 megapixel medium format digital back, the newest apps, the latest updates – we cannot help but push the proverbial envelope (shadow/highlight recovery, adjustment brushes, the curves line, layer blending modes).

There is art in successful digital imaging and manipulation.

Vincent Dixon, the Wade Brothers, David LaChapelle, the collaborations of Warren Du Preez and Nick Thornton Jones, and our Juror, award-winning Photoshop expert Suzette Troche-Stapp are elevating the digitally manipulated photograph to the next level. How do you use it to develop your concepts and achieve your constructs? Whether you are enhancing or altering reality, creating fantasy, retouching, compositing, constructing, how has digital informed your imaging?

JUROR: A photographer since the age of sixteen, Suzette Troche-Stapp has been working in digital imaging since its inception in the 1980’s. Recognized throughout the industry, Suzette was recently named one of the “Top 40 Photoshop Experts,” awarded the “Guru Award” for excellence in Photoshop by NAPP, and nominated for the “Photoshop Hall Of Fame” several years in a row.

Her images are seen in national ad campaigns, editorial beauty and fashion features, and her celebrity images have been broadcast to millions on shows like “The View”, “The Late Show”, and “Kathy Griffin’s Life on the D-List”.

Troche-Stapp is also a workshop facilitator and author, offering tutorials, several published articles and an award-winning book “The Glitterguru on Photoshop: from Concept to Cool.” The Dark Room Gallery is so pleased to have Suzette Troche-Stapp’s digital expertise and commercial experience as Juror for “Digital Concept.Digital Construct.”

PHOTO SUBMISSIONS:

Age: Entrants must be at least 18 years old. If younger, a parent or legal guardian may make the submission for you.

Ownership: All submitted photos must have been taken by the photographer making the entry.

If you are a parent or legal guardian submitting for a minor, please make it clear on the submission form.

Digital Submissions: All submissions must be made by digital files through:

1. Upload on VermontPhotoSpace.com or

2. Sent via email to submissions (at) VermontPhotoSpace.com. This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it along with an application form. There is a $5.00 surcharge for email entries.

3. Images should be as large as possible but no larger than 1280 pixels on the longest side, type jpg – set to the highest quality. DPI can be set to any number, but if you must specify something to go with 72 dpi.

FEES: Up to three images may be submitted for a fee of $20 US for on-line submission and $25 for email submission. Additional images may be submitted for an additional $5 US per image.

DEADLINE: Images and payment must be received by midnight EST on April 4, 2011.

RIGHTS: Photographers retain all rights to their work, except for submissions accepted for exhibition: artists grant Dark Room Gallery/Vermont Photo Space the right to use their images to promote the exhibition on the website and for inclusion in an exhibit catalog.

Darkroom Gallery provides free matting and framing of accepted entries for the duration of each of our exhibitions, subject to standard sizes. Photographers set their own prices if they wish to sell their work, and retain all rights.

CALL for ENTRIES: 19th Annual CPSA Int’l Exhibit

Being different or combatting conformity for the sake of the fight alone is stupid. Loosen up and have a little fun. CALL for ENTRIES: 19th Annual CPSA Int’l Exhibit

The Colored Pencil Society of America announces a call to artists for a juried exhibition, June 29-July 31, 2011 at the Charles W. Eisemann Center in Richardson, Texas.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to living artists 18 years or older, regardless of geographic location. Artists may submit a digital image of one or two different works, but only one piece per artist may appear in the exhibition. Entries must be submitted to the 19th Annual CPSA International Exhibition on the CaFÉTM website according to instructions. No preferential treatment for members.

MEDIA: Artwork must be 100% colored pencil. Use of any other media (watercolor, acrylic, oil, ink, etc.) or artist prepared surface disqualifies entry. Acceptable additions: solvents (e.g., turpentine) and graphite pencil used under/between/over layers. Artwork must be two-dimensional on a single surface. No collage or montage.

DEADLINE: 11:59 p.m. (Mountain Time) on March 31, 2011

NOTIFICATION: No notifications of acceptance are sent by CPSA. It is the responsibility of the artist to check the CPSA website to learn of acceptance and obtain shipping instructions. Editor’s Note: Once again let me state for the record that I find this practice unacceptable. If you can take my money, you should send me an email either way; however, this seems to be the trend of the future, folks… like it or not.

ENTRY FEE: CPSA Members $25; Non-members $35. Additional costs to accepted artists include shipping costs and cartage fee. Accepted artists are responsible for all shipping expenses to and from exhibition, plus a $45 cartage fee to cover handling of shipped work (unpacking and transporting to/from gallery). This Fee does NOT include insurance coverage.

SALES: Artwork may be priced FOR SALE or NOT FOR SALE. The Eisemann Center charges a 30% commission on sales of artwork. No change in price is permitted after submitting an entry.

JUROR: Bob Malenfant, Director Southwest Gallery, was born in Canada, but his family lived internationally throughout his childhood. He has lived in Switzerland, South Africa, Australia and Paris. Bob attended high school at the American School in Paris and studied Art History at the University of Michigan where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree. After graduation, he began a year-long internship with Christie’s in London and spent another year working at A & F Gordon. Upon returning to the states in 1984, Bob started his career with Southwest Gallery in 1988. He became partner in 1995, just as the gallery was moving to its current location of Sigma Road in North Dallas.

AWARDS: Numerous monetary awards and the CIPPY Best of Show award are presented each year at the Awards Banquet. Last year, cash awards totaled over $14,000. Award winners are notified by phone.

I would love to have $3800 to spend on my kitchen, but on first thought, $38,000 would cause my head to implode with all the possibilities. CALL for ENTRIES: Chelsea International l Fine Art Competition

Agora Gallery in New York, NY announces a call to artists for its annual Chelsea International Fine Art Competition, August 19 – September 9, 2011. Awards valued at $38,000 include: participation in a juried exhibition, cash prizes, online and print promotion.

ELIGIBILITY: All visual artists worldwide above the age of 18 are eligible to participate.

She has also worked at the American Federation of Arts, at the International Center of Photography and at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia in Madrid, Spain.

AWARDS: Awards valued at a total of Thirty Eight Thousand dollars ($38,000) will be distributed as follows:

Exhibition – 15-20 artists will participate in a collective exhibition at Agora Gallery 530 West 25th Street, Chelsea, New York.
Cash – $1000 will be awarded to three (3) artists; each receiving $500, $300 and $200 respectively.
Internet Promotion – Six (6) artists will be awarded placement of 6 images on ARTmine for a period of one year.
Review by an art critic – One (1) artist will be awarded a one-page review with two (2) color images in ARTisSpectrum Magazine.

I love it when two of things I like most collide… like those old 1970s commercials about “your peanut butter on my chocolate” versus “your chocolate in my peanut butter” for Reese’s peanut butter cups. Well, it happened this week on our little-blog-that-could. Featured Artist Amy Kollar Anderson sent a Call for Proposals for a gallery for whom she’s the coordinator. I suppose I should have known…but I didn’t. Take a look.

CALL for PROPOSALS: Rosewood Gallery Solo Show

The Rosewood Gallery is dedicated to the encouragement and creation of new works and to the promotion of the visual arts in the Dayton, Ohio, area. Eight exhibitions are presented each year in the Rosewood Gallery, sponsored by the City of Kettering Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts, with support from the Kettering Arts Council and the Ohio Arts Council. CALL for ENTRIES: Imagination at the Museum

So what do you do when you’re too cheap to buy delicate little microgreens and you’re too lazy to plant a garden? Check out this indoor microgreen sculpture, of sorts, that also happens to house a sound system. I know, I want one too. It seems that options, culinary and otherwise, are boundless for those with no limits on their imagination. This show is open to them as well…

CALL for ENTRIES: Gateway to Imagination

The Farmington Museum announces a call to artists for a national juried art competition, May 6 – July 9, 2011 in Farmington, NM. Up to $2750.00 in cash awards.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists 18 years or older residing in the United States, except Farmington Museum employees. Entries must be artist’s original work. The artwork must have been completed after January 1, 2009 (or 2010)* and cannot have been shown in previous Gateway to Imagination juried shows. *Editor’s note: The prospectus says 2009, but several listings in other places say 2010.

MEDIA: All types of media will be considered, no theme
is required.

SALTY BUT SWEET

I grew up with a single father from age 3 to 13, and it was a culinary adventure. One of my fondest memories is of weekend-long motorcycle trips when I was around 8. We’d climb on and hit the road. I would freeze in the morning early-morning air. My father’s solution? We’d stop at every other golden arches we could find for french fries and hot fudge sundaes. This next Call is a whole different way to celebrate two-wheeled freedom.

JURORS: Susan Lehman, Oregon artist and art educator, began life-long passion for motorcycles that began with her first ride on the back of a restored 1951 Vincent Black Shadow. Fans of British café-style racers, she and her husband have owned and ridden dozens of motorcycles. Susan’s formal art training was at California College of Arts in Oakland, CA. She has co-produced two juried art exhibitions for the museum.

Philip Koenen, Since an early age, Philip has had two passions; motorsports and film making. Among the founding students of the now famous Dodge College of Film and Media Arts at Chapman University, Philip was asked to join the Eisaman, Johns & Laws advertising agency to work on the U.S. Suzuki motorcycle account and later to be the Executive Producer for their Film and Television Department. In 1983, he joined the Stunt Driving Team, Driver’s Inc. the clientele of which included Ferrari, Jaguar, Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki and Yamaha. In 1984 he left advertising to follow his passion for building and restoring automobiles. Today Philip continues to successfully operate Grand Touring Garage with a worldwide clientele.

Christiaan “Dutch” Mostert, is an internationally recognized watercolor artist. Born in Holland he received early training from his artist father. A full-time freelance artist since 1978, his travels through Europe, Africa the Middle East and the Pacific Rim countries have provided him with a wealth of subject matter for his works. Though known for marine subjects Dutch has also developed a love of classic vehicles.

Mike Boyle, is an avid collector of vintage Motorcycles. He began restoring cars and motorcycles in 1964. For 32 years he owned and operated a large repair and restoration business in San Diego. Since his move to Coos Bay in 2006 he does restoration work only on his own collections of cars and motorcycles.

Michael Holm, works primarily in digitally manipulated photography, printmaking and design. He has had a life-long interest in motorcycles. Mike received a BA in Art and photography from the University of California, Santa Cruz. He has been instrumental in the upcoming exhibition of motorcycles and motorcycle art.

AWARDS: First Place Award will receive cash prize of $500, Second Place Award will receive cash prize of $350, Third Place Award will receive cash prize of $250 and Four Honorable Mention ribbons will also be awarded.

SALES: Works in the exhibition may be available for sale. Artist agrees to donate 30% of any sale as commission to Coos Art Museum.

CALL for ENTRIES: Beetle Blockers Beetle Art

CAN’T BUY ME LOVE!

I don’t eat bugs. It strikes me as less exotic and more… well, gross. But, bug food is one of my first encounters crossing art with food. My friend Toni, used to be a PR person for a philharmonic orchestra and once sent out delectable beetle lollipops as part of the press kit for a Beatles tribute band that played with the orchestra. Ingenious. The folks producing this next Call should stock up now.

CALL for ENTRIES: Beetle Blockers Beetle Art

Colorado State University Extension, in partnership with Town of Frisco, brings you a public art outreach event never before seen in Summit County. The inaugural Beetle Blockers “Beetle Art” public art event is set to fly in 2011. This event will showcase seven fiberglass beetle sculptures, adorned by winning artists, to be displayed in Frisco, CO, throughout the summer of 2011.

Each of the seven winning pieces of art will appear on one of the fiberglass beetle shells, with monetary awards going to the top three designs. The Beetle Blockers “Beetle Art” will be placed in front of sponsoring businesses throughout the 2011 summer.

WHAT IS BEETLE ART? For the past three years the Town of Frisco has hosted Beetle Fest, a uniquely zany event designed to increase awareness and understanding of the mountain pine beetle epidemic. Beetle Fest is an all day extravaganza held in September which benefits Friends of the Dillon Ranger District.

In the summer of 2011, Beetle Blockers “Beetle Art” will compliment Beetle Fest by introducing 3-dimensional Beetles to the community. Throughout the summer season, residents and visitors alike will see Beetle Blockers “Beetle Art” in front of sponsoring businesses and learn facts about Mountain Pine Beetle.

All this will happen through an artistic media as people explore the wonderful town of Frisco, Colorado.

SUBMISSIONS: Artists are invited to submit a 2-D roof of concept. A panel of judges will select 7 artists to transform their 2-D submission into 3-D renderings upon a 32”x 20”x 15” fiberglass beetle shell.

THEME:
Artists should base their concept on the theme “Look to the Future.”

INSTALLATIONS: Hauntings at The Soap Factory

Did your parents peel grapes and pretend they were eyeballs at Halloween? Mine either, but I always wish they had. I wanted oiled spaghetti for worms and icecubes with plastic bugs, chocolate covered crickets… the whole nine yards. Alas, it is too late now. Or is it? Live our your Halloween fantasies by designing a creepy installation for one of the country’s premier Halloween events.

Art is so creepy…

Check out this Call for Submissions for the Haunted Basement at The Soap Factory in Minnesota! There is no entry fee, but this is slightly regional since you’ll have to be able to travel. But this could be your shot to create the installation of a lifetime. Take a look…

CALL for SUBMISSIONS:
Haunted Basement

The Soap Factory is now accepting proposals for The Soap Factory’s 2011 Haunted Basement. Considered the premier haunted event in the Minnesota, The Soap Factory’s infamously creepy and legitimately haunted basement is a perfect canvas for creating immersive terror environments. Each year they seek new ideas, fresh perspectives and unexpected scares.

A limited number of room or environment designs and costume concepts will be accepted for The Soap Factory’s 2011 Haunted Basement. Accepted applicants will have the creative freedom to design and fabricate a room or costume for The Haunted Basement.

Although selected artists are expected to see their project through from conception to completion from May through August, artists will not be alone in this venture.

The Soap Factory has excellent resources for gathering supplies, and…

A small army of staff and volunteers

…that will advise and assist you on realizing your vision. This includes set, sound, tech and lighting designers, wardrobe, hair and make-up artists….even scent engineers who can make custom smells!

REQUIRED MATERIALS:
A typed cover sheet with the following information: name, phone, email, address, title of proposal. A resume outlining any relevant work experience (ie: building or installation experience, etc). A typed, one-page project proposal outlining your idea for The Haunted Basement. A list of materials you will require to complete your project. 5 – 10 work samples. Work samples should be in the form of jpegs and be attached to your application. If submission is submitted via mail images must be available in printed form and on a CD in jpeg format.

I almost moved to Paducah, Kentucky. When I was deciding where to move, I tripped across their Artist Relocation Program. I visited Paducah and FELL IN LOVE with a huge pickle/tamale factory from the early 1900s. Fate interceded, and I ended up in Gatlinburg. But, I find myself drawn to factories over and over again. This Call for Applications details another great use for an old factory.

VISITING ARTIST PROGRAM: Torpedo Factory Art Center

Opportunities for emerging and experienced artists residencies for one, two, or three months in the Torpedo Factory Art Center between June 1 and August 31, 2011.

The projects undertaken by Visiting Artists for this self-directed, creative residency must be compatible with available working studio spaces and facilities. The Visiting Artist will have the opportunity for informal collegial exchanges with Torpedo Factory artists. Each Visiting Artist is also asked to conduct a workshop, give a lecture, or provide a demonstration, elaborating on his/her work. Visiting Artists will be able to display and sell original artwork, and will be provided with workspace. They will pay one-half of the rent of the studio (between $130 and $400 depending on the studio). The TFAC does not have any shared equipment or facilities; Visiting Artists are responsible for all expenses and arrangements related to art materials, equipment, transportation, housing or other requirements.

ELIGIBILITY: The Visiting Artist Program is open to all emerging and experienced visual artists over the age of 21 who are not currently Torpedo Factory leaseholders. Applicants provide evidence of artistic accomplishment through the submitted images and application form. By applying, applicants agree to: (1) work in front of, and interact with, the public; (2) work in the studio five days a week during the period of the residency (because most of their visitors come on the weekends, they request that Visiting Artists work on those days); and (3) commit to follow the Visiting Artist Program requirements.

DEADLINE:
By February 28 provide a completed Application Form, CD with 15 images, and a list of the images.

ENTRY FEE:
There is no application fee.

JURY PROCESS: Selections will be made in a two-step process. The juror is F. Lennox Campello, author of the blog Daily Campello News and of the forthcoming 100 Artists of Washington. He is also an artist, curator, and former gallerist. He will review all applications and select a group of finalists who present evidence of artistic merit based on submitted applications. The Visiting Artist Program Committee will then match as many finalists as possible to spaces available, taking into account the applicant’s requirements, attributes of the specific studios available, and the goal of providing a range of media experiences to their visiting public. Visiting Artists will occupy studios temporarily vacated by resident artists.

ABOUT THE TORPEDO FACTORY: The Torpedo Factory Art Center (TFAC) is one of the largest visual art centers in the U.S. and is home to more than 140 visual artists working in 82 studios. Artists create in a wide variety of media including painting, fiber, jewelry, ceramics, printmaking, cast and stained glass, photography, and sculpture. The Torpedo Factory is open to the public every day; visitors are invited and welcomed into studios to enjoy the art, watch artists at work, ask questions, and purchase original art – allowing the public an opportunity to share in the excitement and fascination of the creative process.
