The end result of that oversight is over-baked brownies, extra-crunchy crostini, dried-out lasagna and the more-than-occasional burned frozen pizza… not to mention the frantic run to the oven while muttering explicatives after realizing that I am too late to save tonight’s dinner. The Power of Self 2011 is an international, all-encompassing open call for artwork that celebrates the self-portrait, awarding one year of your life, paid for. CALL for ENTRIES: Postmarked 2011

For many years, inmates from around the country wrote to the Prison Library Project and they were amazed by the artwork that accompanied requests for books. These beautiful illustrations were their inspiration for a mail art exhibition and fundraiser.

Postmarked was developed seven years ago for the Claremont Forum’s Prison Library Project, which sends books free to prisoners in the U.S. upon their request. Providing education and opportunity to learn about mail art, view new and established mail artists’ works, and to participate in the experience of creating and sending mail art. Now in its 7th year, this exhibition is one of the largest in California.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all.

MEDIA: Please send submissions of mail art of any size and medium to: Postmarked 2011, Prison Library Project, 112 Harvard #303, Claremont CA 91711. ONLY the side with the official USPS Postmark/barcode will be displayed. Your mail art may be painted, stamped, collaged, printed, and/or otherwise decorated or constructed. It may be any shape and size that will go through the mail and receive an official postmark.

Your submission may get worn or torn through the mail, but the handling process is an important part of the theme. Only the side with the postmark can be displayed, due to space limitations, but the art doesn’t have to be limited to that side. You may include any message inside the envelope, which will be opened only by the person who purchases the art envelope. You may submit more than one piece… and begin sending now!

DEADLINE: Entries must be postmarked by May 31, 2011.

ENTRY FEE: No entry fee.

WHY SUPPORT the PLP? “Rehabilitation was at one time a stated goal of the prison system. Today, funding for most educational and rehabilitation programs, including prison libraries, has been cut or completely eliminated. It is a distressing fact that today’s U.S. prisons are increasingly about punishing people and warehousing human beings, not about, rehabilitation, or education.”

“This is where PLP steps in. We believe that everyone deserves access to literature and educational materials, including people trying to work towards social change, self-empowerment or rehabilitation within the incarceration system.

The U.S. has less than 5 percent of the world’s population, but more than a quarter of the world’s prisoners.

Nearly one percent of American adults are incarcerated, the highest rate in the world, but many prisoners have little access to books or educational material. They face substantial barriers and are cut off from family and friends on the outside. While some prisons have libraries, many do not. Of those that do, access and selection can be extremely limited. Usually, prisoners are not allowed to receive books from friends or family. Thus, programs like ours are one of the few options available to these individuals.” –from the PLP website.

I absolutely love heirloom vegetables. I love the idea of preserving the genetic “bloodline,” if you will, of a fruit or vegetable easily distinguished from the genetically modified, hot-house varieties we are all used to eating. However, I can admit that sometimes a tomato is just a tomato. This next call recognizes that sometimes art is just art. They don’t want your CV, resume, statment or anything else–just your art.

SALES: The Gallery is authorized to sell artwork on behalf of the Artist during the exhibition period. Title to each artwork will remain with the Artist until the Gallery sells the Work. The Gallery will sell the Work, as agent for the Artist, at the agreed Selling Price as specified in the consignment note. The Gallery will be entitled to charge the Artist a 50% commission on the net Selling Price of any Works sold.

Today, I am going to give you a time-tested Southern recipe for success. Use sugar, not vinegar. It worked for Mary Poppins; it will work for you. When sending in your Calls for Entries, your submissions for the $2 Art Contest or submissions for ANY show. Be professional, but above all else… be nice. I am going to have to quit saying that I do not usually recommend online exhibits because here is another one. It is a great exhibit sponsored by a great site (albeit a competitor, of sorts). Consider the benefits.

CALL to ARTISTS: Art Kudos

Learn more about the Art Kudos show sponsored by Artshow.com! Art Kudos is an annual international juried competition that serves to recognize and honor excellence in the visual arts. Artists who are selected as finalists benefit from world-wide exposure in a year-long online exhibition and have the opportunity to win cash awards for their exemplary work.

ELIGIBILITY: The competition is open to artists anywhere in the world, 18 years of age or older. Publishers, galleries, agents, and collectors may not submit artwork on behalf of artists.

MEDIA: Drawings, paintings, printmaking, photography, digital art, sculpture, installations, wood, glass, ceramics, fiber art and mixed media are eligible. Media not accepted: video/film, wearable art (clothing or jewelry). All works submitted must be original in design and concept. JUROR: Holly Koons McCullough is the Director of Collections and Exhibitions at the Telfair Museum of Art in Savannah, Georgia. She began her career at the Telfair in 1996, serving as the museum’s Curator of Education before assuming leadership of the curatorial department.

McCullough spearheaded the publication of the Telfair’s first collection catalogue, and has organized exhibitions on subjects ranging from modern silverpoint drawings to contemporary Southeastern art, as well as 19th and early 20th-century American art, including the recent Dutch Utopia exhibition. She holds a B. A. in English and art history from the University of Georgia and a M.A. in art history from the University of Notre Dame.

AWARDS: Exemplary works will be displayed in a year-long online exhibition at www.artkudos.com beginning August 15th, 2011. Cash awards totaling $4,400 will be distributed as follows: Best of Show – $1,200; Second Place – $900; Third Place – $750; Founder’s Award of Distinction – $500; (3) Merit Awards – $250 each; (3) Honorable Mentions – $100 each.

COMMISSION: No commissions are taken for sales generated via the exhibition, and works submitted do not have to be available for sale. Sales will be encouraged, however, and artists will have the option to display their contact information beside their images.

CALL for ENTRIES: 10 Second Film Festival

I am the soup queen. I accidentally found out during a run of bad weather one winter during which we couldn’t make it to the grocery store that I am really good at making soup. I had a whole series of artwork happen because I accidentally put myself in a situation where I was trapped at home too. My point? Maybe life is just a series of accidents, and with any luck, maybe more of them will be happy than not. If you’ve accidentally (or puposefully) shot 10 seconds of good film, here’s your chance to put it to good use.

*Editor’s note: I have a soft spot for The Soap Factory. Clearly, they love what they do…hence the overwhelming amount of community and volunteer support they enjoy. Do we all wish The Soap Factory was in our city or town? Certainly. But never let geography be your crutch. The chances are good that there is a free-spirited, albeit struggling, arts organization in your hometown. Show them a little volunteer support, and the rest could be history.

There may still be snow on the ground in Minnesota. But, it’s time to think about summer already! The Soap Factory’s Ten Second Film Festival is seeking submissions for our fun, quirky, and sometimes irreverent film festival. The festival, which drew nearly 4000 eager movie-goers last year, is the film festival for both the amateur and immature; the talented and the unfortunate; the virtuoso and the accidental artist. Anyone can submit a Ten second film All photos of The Ten Second Film Festival taken by Sarah Nienaber and Christopher Selleck.

NOTIFICATION: Filmmakers will be notified of acceptance by June 20th. Accepted films will be screened on July 4 at The Soap Factory.

ENTRY FEE: There is no entry fee for up to 6 films.

JURY PROCESS: Email your films to: tensecond@soapfactory.org. All films submitted will be juried by curator Lillian Egner and a panel of trusted advisors. Films will be sorted into ten categories determined at the time of selection. On the night of the festival, prizes are awarded to the best films in each category. Winning films are determined by a panel of local celebrity judges and audience reaction. Past categories have included: What the hell am I looking at?, Dance Off, Moment of Zen, Mindless Violence, Best Documentary, Wait For It…, Most Disturbing, Kubrick Award, and Under the Influence.

HOW TO SUBMIT A FILM: Email your ten second film submissions to The Soap Factory at tensecond@soapfactory.org. Include ONE film per email (ie: if you have multiple submissions, send a separate email for each). The subject line of the email should be the film’s title.

Anybody else out there love game meats? I have several friends that consume more venison each year than beef because they have relatives that hunt. But, venison is the tamest of the edible game out there. I enjoy pheasant and boar, but elk chops (like the ones from Yo Ranch Steakhouse) are probably my favorite. My kitchen cupboard is like the United Nations of spice racks. I love challenging my taste buds by experimenting with tastes and flavors that have not been a natural part of my cultural experience. As you know, I live in the Great Smoky Mountains where Thai food is considered a really exotic experience… so I value my trips to larger metropolitan areas for food variety alone. Is it wrong that I want to enter this next show just so I might be able to grab some Ethiopian food on the way to the opening? I don’t think so either.

ELIGIBILITY: All artists

ENTRY FEE: Minimum entry fee is $40 for up to three entries and $5.00 for each additional entry. There is no limit to the number of entries. Make check or money order in US$ payable to VIRIDIAN ARTISTS INC. All entry fees are nonrefundable.

JUROR: Elisabeth Sussman, Curator, Whitney Museum. Sussman’s Gordon Matta-Clark: “You Are the Measure” was awarded the AICA award for best monographic show in New York (2007-08). She has organized many other Whitney exhibitions including Remote Viewing: Invented Worlds in Recent Painting and Drawing (2005); Mike Kelley: Catholic Tastes (1991); Nan Goldin: I’ll Be Your Mirror (1996), with David Armstrong; Keith Haring (1997); and the Museum’s 1993 Biennial Exhibition.

Sussman co-curated two exhibitions on the work of Eva Hesse, one of Hesse’s drawings with The Drawing Center, and another of her sculpture with The Jewish Museum, both in New York. For the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Sussman co-organized, with Renate Petzinger of the Museum Wiesbaden, a full retrospective on the work of Eva Hesse; the exhibition received AICA’s First Prize for the best monographic exhibition outside of New York in 2001 and 2002. For SFMOMA, Sussman also organized, with Sandra Phillips, a retrospective of the work of Diane Arbus, Diane Arbus: Revelation. The catalogue for the Arbus exhibition received the 2004 Infinity Award for Publication of the International Center of Photography. Sussman was a Fellow of the Rockefeller Foundation at the Rockefeller Study and Conference Center in Bellagio, Italy, in 1999, and a fellow at the Getty Research Institute in 2003. She is the author of many publications, including Lisette Model (Phaidon, 2001) and has contributed essays on Robert Gober for the Schaulager and on Lee Bontecou.

AWARDS: First Prize is $300; Second Prize is $200; Third Prize is $100. 25 artists’ work will be displayed in a group exhibition at VIRIDIAN gallery. An additional 25 artists’ work will be featured in an ongoing Power Point Presentation during the exhibition. All winners will be listed on the Viridian website.

Check out this Call for Entries for the ITS#PHOTO International Photo Competition from International Talent Support (ITS). There is no entry fee, but the entry is somewhat complicated including sending your portfolio to Italy. Read carefully and follow instructions. If you’re a finalist, it could change your life.

ITS#PHOTO International Photo Competition

The photo competition of International Talent Support is an important observatory to find talented, creative and highly prepared young photographers, able to shoot images that can easily find their place in the most important lifestyle and photography magazines as well as in renowned art galleries. The competition is organized in partnership with DISARONNO, the Italian liqueur.

10-15 finalists will be selected and will be invited to Trieste, Italy on 15-16 July 2011 for the finals. Their photos will be displayed in a dedicated exhibition in the ITS#TEN location and viewed by all the guests of the event: international press, opinion leaders, professional photographers.

ELIGIBILITY: ITS#PHOTO is open to the following categories (Refer to the FAQ ’s for guidelines): 1) College students in their last year of a Photographycourse (BA or MA) who will graduate in 2011 in Photography. 2) Photography graduates. 3) Young talents not in possession of a degree in Photography who work professionally as photographers.

THEME: DISARONNO will challenge young photographers asking them to present a project based on the theme Open the Possibilities, the claim of the international communication campaign of DISARONNO. Selected finalists will be asked to present an extra photo project on a more focused theme “DISARONNO Open the Possibilities” which will be presented during the finals in July.

DEADLINE: April 2, 2011

NOTIFICATION: The pre-selections will take place by April 27, 2011. The results of the pre-selections will be promptly published on their website.

ENTRY FEE: There is no entry fee.

AWARDS: DISARONNO Photography Award € 5000 (Approx $7000 USD as of 3/5/2011) plus special communication project ITS is a chance to meet professionals in the field. It gives amazing coverage and allows young photographers to showcase their work in front of the leading international press, opinion leaders and professionals from the world of photography.

The pictures may end up in editorials in magazines, or finalists could even work with these magazines directly on projects, like ITS#EIGHT winner Saana Wang who had the chance to work side by side with renowned photographer Ari Marcopoulos. The photos of the trip were showcased in an exhibition in Milan and published in GQ Magazine with a dedicated article. Being selected as a finalist means you have already won, because ITS continues to support their finalists’ careers and help them out for as long as we exist.

ABOUT ITS: EVE is an agency geographically based in Trieste, Northern Italy that works on projects at a worldwide level.

EVE is a group of young people, in spirit at least, coming from different countries and cultural environments. They have built up know-how and professionalism for almost 20 years.

EVE created ITS – International Talent Support 10 years ago. It has been organising ITS since then, finding the right partners to involve in the platform every year and creating different projects around their needs.

EVE started with a fashion competition for young designers. On the basis of the great success of the competition and its follow-ups, EVE has expanded its activities developing new areas related to fashion design through the format of competitions: photography, accessories and jewelry.
