CALL for ENTRIES: Pyramid Atlantic Art

Calling all printmakers, papermakers/paper artists & book artists! Pyramid Atlantic Art Center is proud to announce their Annual Juried Exhibition. Selected works will be on exhibit in the Washington Printmaker’s Gallery, located on the second floor of Pyramid Atlantic Art Center, from April 1-22, 2011. Three awards, sponsored by Plaza Artist Materials, will be granted.

MEDIA: Printmakers, papermakers, paper artistst, and book artists. All prints, works on/in paper, and book arts will be considered by the juror.

ENTRY FEE: A maximum of five original works may be entered at no cost to current members. But if you are not a member, you will have to pay a $40 membership fee.

JUROR: Alec Simpson is a visual artist and Director of the Brentwood Arts Exchange – a facility in Prince George’s County, Maryland which has a rotating exhibition gallery, craft store and multi-purpose space used to present art classes of varying kinds. Simpson previously served as Deputy Director of the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities. He has been a consultant to the National Endowment for the Arts and the Connecticut Commission on the Arts, as well as a panelist for a number of state and local arts agencies.

AWARDS: Three awards, sponsored by Plaza Artists Materials, will be presented April 9th.

CALL for ENTRIES: Photowork 2011

How food looks matters. There is a reason split pea soup turned up as vomit in The Exorcist. I love the taste, but let’s face facts folks… split pea soup looks gross. There is no great surprise that kids find brussel sprouts and wild rice and oatmeal don’t appeal to a large segement of the population. Why eat peas when you can eat Peeps? I get it. But beauty is in the eye of the beholder. This Call for Entries will give you a chance to show beauty (or not) from your perspective.

CALL for ENTRIES:
Photowork 2011

Photowork 2011 is a premier exhibition of new photographic images. The show is visited by art appreciators from a five-county area including parts of Connecticut and New York City. As a National show, this exhibition brings together photographers from across the country with artists from 30 to 40 states represented each year.

The spirit of the show is a juxtaposition of traditional styles and cutting edge images. The show celebrates the photograph both as FINE ART and as SOCIAL COMMENTARY. Winners in the past have included traditional 35mm photographs, silver gelatin prints, digital prints and even pinhole camera pictures! Cash prizes are also awarded.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to any USA artist for work completed in the last 4 years.

DEADLINE: April 1, 2011

NOTIFICATION: You will be notified by E-mail and/or phone call of your acceptance or rejection on or about April 8th.

JUROR: Prior to the Guggenheim, Lauren Hinkson was senior cataloguer for the Department of Prints and Illustrated Books at the Museum of Modern Art, NY, and a fellow at the Museum of Art at RISD. She received her degree in Art History and Architecture from Brown University.

AWARDS: Recipients of cash awards will be determined by the juror and announced at the opening reception. Artists need not be present to win.

ABOUT THE BARRETT ART CENTER: The Barrett Art Center building is the heart of the association and is still used for administrative purposes. It also provides a meeting place for art enthusiasts and artists alike to view, exhibit, discuss, create, and learn about art.

The Center hosts a changing exhibition program devoted to fine contemporary and traditional works of art. Prestigious national juried shows in contemporary art (New Directions) and photography (Photo Works) have each been held annually at the Art Center for more than 20 years, attracting hundreds of submissions from across the country.

Other events held annually at the Center include shows featuring works by members and by our faculty and students, as well as topical shows (such as the recent Latin American show). The Center also provides space for classes.

As much as I love food, I truly despise making the decision about what to eat meal after meal. And no one, except my 11 year old, will say what they really want to eat. My husband always wants fish, but he couches it in “I want something lighter, healthier.” I usually want something exotic or rich or covered in sauce, but I usually start with “why don’t we treat ourselves tonight?” But not my kid. CALL for ENTRIES: 2011 Sequim Arts Juried Show

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all adult artists. All work must be original in interpretation and composition, not copied from copyright or published art or executed in a supervised class.

MEDIA: Two-dimensional art such as, but not limited to oil, acrylic, water media, mixed media, original prints, collage, pastel, photography, drawing, and assemblage. Three-dimensional art such as, but not limited to sculpture (any medium), basketry, ceramics, glass, jewelry, and textiles.

DEADLINE: March 7, 2011

NOTIFICATION: Notification of accepted work will be mailed on March 25, 2011. Acceptance letters will include instructions for both hand delivered and shipped delivery of work.

ENTRY FEE: Each artist may submit five entries. Cost for Sequim Arts members: $15 for the first entry; Cost for non-members: $20 for first entry. All additional entries are $5 each. Enter fee non-refundable. Check or money order payable to Sequim Arts.

SALES: All artwork must be for sale and priced with the intent to sell. A 25% commission will be charged on all sales.

JUROR: Mike McCollum was born in Hoquiam, Washington but acquired many of his artistic sensibilities from the San Francisco Bay Area. “While at UC Berkeley I apprenticed with Peter Voulkos assisting him with 3 major outdoor sculptures.”

“Abstract expressionism is one of my primary influences and I am enamored with the idea of ‘arriving at’ rather than ‘aiming at.’ I want to surprise myself. My job as an artist is to make decisions–what to leave in and what to take out. I see art as a process of reduction–getting rid of the chaff and striving for the essence of the idea. In my career I have worked in many mediums — bronze, ceramics, drawing, painting, printmaking and wood. I start with a basic idea and then it’s a matter of rescuing that idea from all the contrived directions it may take me.”

ABOUT SEQUIM ARTS: Sequim Arts is a non-profit arts organization located on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington state, with Mount Olympus to the south and Victoria, British Columbia across the Strait of Juan de Fuca to the north. Sequim Arts was established in 1969. Many of their artists are nationally recognized and all members benefit from their local community’s appreciation and support.

WET MY WHISTLE

I’m not a huge fan of drinking plain ol’ water on a regular basis. However, I recognize the vital importance of water in my daily food experience. I can’t drink iced tea at my mother’s house because the water is very sulphur-y. And when I lived in the USVI, it only took one turn cleaning the cistern to teach me to cook ONLY with bottled water in the islands.

What does water mean to you?

This next call encourage you to stretch your perception of H20 both visually and in written word.

CALL for ENTRIES: H20

A chance for artists and writers to slosh around ideas about a simple molecule that fills our streams, ponds, lakes, and rivers. Water offers recreational opportunities, delights us with its naturalbeauty, and indeed provides for life itself. So dip into your imagination and share the ebb and flow of your creative process.

ELIGIBILITY: The exhibition is open to all living artists and writers age 16 and over. The theme “H2O” is a flexible guideline to help artists think analytically about their work and to lend continuity to the exhibit. Interpret the theme creatively; let your ideas flow. Think about H2O and share your water-inspired work with the world.

MEDIA: All visual arts media and writing (500 words or less).

DEADLINE: March 7, 2011

ENTRY FEE: $24 members/$34 non-members for up to two entries. The entry fee includes a copy of the commemorative exhibition color catalog, an $8 value.

JURORS: Debra Burrington (Visual Arts Juror) started painting as a young adult, attending classes and workshops throughout New England. She continued her education by studying design for two years with Lisa Forster Beach of Stowe, VT. Burrington enjoys attending workshops and exhibiting at the Arts Center/Old Forge and painting with the “Thursday Plein Air Painters” in summers. She believes that inspiration comes easily in the Adirondacks.

A celebrated watercolorist, Debra has sold paintings throughout New England, in her gallery in Vermont, and presently sells works in her gallery in Old Forge.

Bibi Wein (Written Entries Juror) divides her time between the Adirondacks and Manhattan. She is the author of three books and numerous essays, profiles and short stories. Her work has appeared in Iris, Mademoiselle, Biography, Other Voices, Kalliope, Redbook, Family Circle, and many other magazines and anthologies, most recently Why We’re Here (Colgate University Press, 2010).

She has been a frequent contributor to Adirondack Life, and is a contributing writer for Wildflower, the magazine of the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, Austin Texas. She has judged numerous writing contests, both locally and nationally.

AWARDS: Honors and monetary prizes will be awarded. First, second, and third prizes in both visual art and writing will be chosen as well as the “We Know Best Award” determined by the votes of the viewing public. Award winners will be notified by telephone by March 22, 2011. Please, no phone calls.

Seeing Seeing: Capturing a Moment

Special photographs capture a moment in time of somewhere, someone, something in a way that leaves us spellbound. They reveal, tell, relate, inform, depict what we didn’t really know existed, and leave us wanting for more.

With the proliferation of cameras of all sorts, it’s no wonder everyone sees themselves as a photographer of one form or another. All of these tools beget an enormous number of images created by almost anyone who can get their finger on the “shutter.” But how many of those images are so remarkable we are left breathless as we are introduced to a new insight – a new way of seeing something, perhaps even something familiar?

MEDIA: Open to all photographic formats. The juror welcomes entries from all types of photographic equipment (i.e., cell phones, laptop cameras, etc., as well as digital or film cameras).

ABOUT THE JUROR: Science photographer Felice Frankel is a research scientist in The Center for Materials Science and Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Working in collaboration with scientists and engineers, Frankel’s images have been published in over 300 journal articles and/or covers and various other publications for general audiences, including National Geographic, Nature, Science, Angewandte Chemie, Advanced Materials, Materials Today, PNAS, Newsweek, Scientific American, Discover Magazine and New Scientist.

Her new book
No Small Matter:
Science on the Nanoscale
is co-authored with
George Whitesides.

Frankel and her work have been profiled in the New York Times, Wired, LIFE Magazine, the Boston Globe, the Washington Post, the Chronicle of Higher Education, National Public Radio’s All Things Considered, Science Friday, the Christian Science Monitor and various european publications. She exhibits throughout the United States and in Europe. Her limited edition photographs are included in a number of corporate and private collections.

ABOUT CREATIVE ARTS WORKSHOP: CAW is a community art school devoted to fostering creativity through participation in and appreciation of the visual arts. CAW has served the Greater New Haven area since 1961, offering classes in fine arts and crafts to more than 3,000 adults and young people every year in its fully-equipped studios located in downtown New Haven. CALL for ENTRIES: 2011 I-Park Environmental Art Program

I-Park is pleased to announce that it will be hosting its third international, multi-disciplinary Environmental Art Biennale on September 10, 2011. This will be preceded by a 3-week residency that begins on August 23, 2011. This residency is exclusively for the artists who will be creating pieces for this event.

I-Park’s interest in environmental goes back to its early years as an artists-in-residence program. Visual artists in particular were drawn to the rich, varied natural landscape existing at I-Park and were permitted to create modest pieces on the land. This evolved into a practice of active staff support and encouragement for more ambitious installations. In 2007, a separate residency session was created, devoted solely to the field of environmental art; a successful exhibition was held later that year.

ELIGIBILITY: Artists working in the following fields: Environmental sculpture/installation, Landscape/garden design, Music composition, sound sculpture/design, Performance art, Written/spoken word/interpretation, Photography, video, moving image, Inter-disciplinary

MEDIA: I-Park now views environmental art as a multi-disciplinary field and also encourages inter-disciplinary collaborations. The artistic engagement of the site for this program can involve site-responsive aesthetic interventions, the creation of new outdoor spaces and environments, conceptual investigations and projects that re-imagine our relationship to nature.

DEADLINE: The application deadline for the program is February 28, 2011.

AWARDS: $2,000 per participant to cover artist’s fee and material costs. Limited transportation cost reimbursement is provided. Lodging & meals provided during the residency.

ABOUT THE JUROR: Axis Gallery is pleased to have Dena Beard as juror for the 6th National Juried Exhibition. Dena Beard is Curatorial Assistant at the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive (BAM/PFA). For the MATRIX program at BAM/PFA she assists with the production of site-specific projects by national and international emerging artists.

Independently, she curated the Lending Library exhibition series in Oakland and San Francisco. Dena is currently working on Take Up Room on the Floor, a project about physical and virtual embodiment, and a solo exhibition featuring the artist Lutz Bacher. Prior to joining the staff at BAM/PFA, Dena was Curatorial Associate at the Santa Barbara Contemporary Arts Forum. She graduated from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago with an M.A. in Art History, Theory, and Criticism.

ABOUT THE GALLERY: Axis Gallery is an artist-run space. This cooperative has been together for over 15 years building a reputation for exhibiting challenging contemporary artwork. Usually when I think of NYC, I think of street food vendors. However, I can only write so much about filafel, hot dogs and pizza. So, searching my memory for another favorite culinary delight from my last trip to New York, I thought… crepes from Suzette’s. JUROR: William Bailey is represented in the collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Museum of Modern Art. Bailey was elected to the National Academy of Design and the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and is represented by the Betty Cuningham Gallery, where he had his most recent exhibition in 2010. Mr. Bailey taught for many years at Yale, and maintains studios in New Haven and Italy.

ABOUT THE GALLERY: Prince Street Gallery represents contemporary figurative and abstract artists. The gallery first opened its doors on Prince Street in SoHo in 1970.

Prince Street Gallery originally emerged out of the Alliance of Figurative Artists and continues to broaden from its roots. During its founding years the gallery received encouragement from The New York State Council on the Arts in the form of grants supporting exhibitions and a catalogue.

In 1980, the gallery moved to Wooster Street where it remained until 2001 when it reopened at 530 West 25th Street in Chelsea.

I miss seafood. I love my husband dearly, but his adult-onset allergy to shellfish has really put a crimp in our food lifestyle. Amongst my favorites are mussels steamed in white wine and Maryland blue crabs. Aside from the adults having gorgeous blue claws, they are delightfully yummy. JUROR: Laurie Snyder has been Chair of Photography at Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) in Baltimore MD since1993. She teaches classes in the Alternative Process in photography, and The Artist’s Book in printmaking, which explores the book as concept and object. Prior to that, she taught at Cornell University, Ithaca College, and Syracuse University in New York. An active exhibiting artist, Snyder has shown her work to critical acclaim throughout the mid-Atlantic.

Snyder is currently working on several series: Nature and Lace, (pictured above and left) a series of photograms of antique lace paired with a photogram of plant material. These are silver gelatin prints; another group are wall books of plant matierial printed in cyanotype on rice paper.

Another on going series of photographs explores the concept of “Mend”which documents the repairs and mends in everyday life. Laurie maintains a studio in Baltimore and in Ithaca, New York.

AWARDS: Cash awards total $1000. Award contributers and recipients will be listed in the exhibition catalog.
