CALL for ENTRIES: Lay of the Land

Learn more from Orion, America's Finest Environmental Magazine!

dandy DISHES

I woke up sneezing this morning for the very best reason — flowers are blooming.  They’ve been blooming for a while, but today, the wildflowers have taken over my side yard.  That means it is time to remind folks about eating flowers.  Rose petals are among my favorite salad toppings & oil additives, but dandelions are truly the star of edible blooms.  The yellow flowers are delicious, the greens are considered a superfood, and I hear you can roast & grind the root as a decaf coffee substitute.  As always, never eat a flower if you don’t know its history as well as the history of the land upon which it grows.  No one wants a belly full of pesticide.

Continuing with the publication-themed calls this week, pay attention to the next one.  This environmental magazine has a 30+ year track record, so doing research on what they want is easy.  They do publish a wide variety of styles; however, environmental work is their mainstay.  I have linked to their Call, and although they have an online entry system, you will find that they prefer you to simply email them a link to your work, NOT the work itself.  This is a great way to have someone consider a portfolio of images instead of hoping you picked the single “right” image for the submission.  Free & easy…

Check out this Call for Entries from Orion Magazine (print publication) for the Lay of the Land department.  There is no fee to enter, but please do your homework on this publication so that you can craft your submission to suit.  “America’s Finest Environmental Magazine”…

ARTIST of the DAY: Richard Shilling

art of the land, POWERED by the SUN

I live rurally, by choice, and find the environment I live in almost overwhelmingly inspirational.  Today’s Artists of the Day has found a way to put my inspiration to work for him AS art.  Enjoy the gorgeous, ephemeral work of Richard Shilling.  So many of his works are powered by the sun, just like today’s Power It Forward Call. (continues below)

4 Colour Sunwheel by Richard Shilling
4 Colour Sunwheel by Richard Shilling (coloured leaves, dogwood frame & the evening sun)

“Through his ongoing relationship with nature he explores themes to do with time, ecology and the constant flux of the seasons and expresses these ideas through his unique land art images.  Every sculpture is photographed in natural light, using normal camera equipment and without any Photoshop…  Each photo accurately depicts how each sculpture appeared, at its most vibrant moment, before the elements reclaim the materials back to nature.” –from richardshilling.co.uk

Food labeling and packaging is frustrating.  First is that not every food item requires ridiculous packaging.  My husband still gets the stink-eye from me every time he reaches for a produce bag for a single lemon or lime.  Secondly, I’d like to know what’s in my food.  Is it genetically modified?  Is it sustainably farmed?  I suspect I won’t see complete labeling in my lifetime.  But, this next Call wants your ideas about sustainability.  This could be a great chance to show your work in California…

Check out this Call for Entries from Sustainable Silicon Valley for the WEST Summit and Showcase (Mountain View, CA).  There is no entry fee or limit on age, so don’t miss this opportunity…

Funny Food: 365 Fun, Healthy, Silly, Creative Breakfasts by Bill & Claire Wurtzel HAHAHAHA…

Humor is always appreciated. I stand accused of being naively optimistic.  If that is true, it is because I live with a smile on my face.  My husband and son think I’m funny–biggest compliment EVER.  I appreciate humor in food as well.  Bill & Clair Wurtzel’s Funny Food is such a great approach to healthy breakfast.  I unabashedly recommend it. This next Call is all about tickling your funny bone.  I unabashedly recommend it too…

ELIGIBILITY:  Open to all artists

THEME:  Humor and art have been infrequent partners at best. With both a philosophical interest in the nature of humor and its relationship to aesthetics, this exhibition invites artworks that may utilize a conceptual approach and are actually funny, occupying this middle ground between art and humor in ways that might be thought-provoking, absurd, or even just silly.

MEDIA:  all work must be funny. if you make the curator laugh, chuckle, wryly smile, or have a genuine humorous reaction, then it’s included.  If not, it’s not. Don’t worry: the curator has a very wide ranging sense of humor. except when it comes to Woody Allen movies which, for some reason, he just doesn’t get.

Learn more about ETSU online! All work must be in analog form, nothing digital will be accepted; suggested analog forms include, but are not limited to: index cards, single sheets of paper, cassette tapes, small sculpture, airmail envelopes, 35mm slides, canned goods, Morse code and anything else that you might think of.  But it must be analog.  No zeros and ones.

All of the work must be small.  Maximum size–one cubic foot (not one cubit foot).  Minimum size–head of a pin.

All work must be signed.  This also means that all work can be catalogued, so dates, dimensions, material, etc. must be either included separately with the entry or readily discernible.  An online catalog of every object submitted will be published.

All work must be environmentally disposable. You can retrieve your work at the end of the show, or pay to have it shipped back, but it is expected that the vast majority of work will be trashed on the last day.   They will provide the trash bags.

I have made my own uneasy peace with green living.  I would like to say it was an over whelming commitment to perserving the planet that started it all, but it was really food.  Isn’t it always with me?  I started to notice how out-of-my-control my food sources were becoming.  Pre-made sauces and pre-washed salad mixes were making me feel like I had forgotten what food really tastes like.  I began my quest to find a way to know what I was eating.  Now, I live a labor-instensive, farmers market going, whole food preparing, canning and preserving sort of life.  Is it easy? No.  Is it tasty? Absolutely.  This Call wants your earth inspired art.  Take a look…

Check out this Call for Entries for the 2013 ECO Art Awards.  There are six categories in which anyone can enter to win cash, prizes, national and international recognition–from songwriting to video and everything in between.  The entry fee is too bad; the prizes are good … and, you might get a warm green glow around your gills!

Did you know you can go green in the kitchen?  Aside from the obvious measures of choosing foods with less packaging, limiting waste and reusing containers, you can also compost.  I’m not talking about those huge composters that conjure images of big stink trash cans.  I’m talking about countertop composters.  This next call invites you to explore environmentally-friendly art options.

Check out the Call for Entries for the 2011 I-Park Environmental Art Program which is part Artist Residency and part Art Installation.  This is a great opportunity to be green AND get your art out there.  Take a look…

CALL for ENTRIES: 2011 I-Park Environmental Art Program

Red Balloons by Alice BettsI-Park is pleased to announce that it will be hosting its third international, multi-disciplinary Environmental Art Biennale on September 10, 2011.  This will be preceded by a 3-week residency that begins on August 23, 2011.  This residency is exclusively for the artists who will be creating pieces for this event.

I-Park’s interest in environmental goes back to its early years as an artists-in-residence program. Visual artists in particular were drawn to the rich, varied natural landscape existing at I-Park and were permitted to create modest pieces on the land. This evolved into a practice of active staff support and encouragement for more ambitious installations. In 2007, a separate residency session was created, devoted solely to the field of environmental art; a successful exhibition was held later that year.

Glass Bottom Livingroom by Ted EfremoffELIGIBILITY:  Artists working in the following fields:  Environmental sculpture/installation, Landscape/garden design, Music composition, sound sculpture/design, Performance art, Written/spoken word/interpretation, Photography, video, moving image, Inter-disciplinary

MEDIA:  I-Park now views environmental art as a multi-disciplinary field and also encourages inter-disciplinary collaborations. The artistic engagement of the site for this program can involve site-responsive aesthetic interventions, the creation of new outdoor spaces and environments, conceptual investigations and projects that re-imagine our relationship to nature.

DEADLINE:  The application deadline for the program is February 28, 2011.

AWARDS:  $2,000 per participant to cover artist’s fee and material costs. Limited transportation cost reimbursement is provided.  Lodging & meals provided during the residency.
