CALL for ENTRIES: In Time

I prefer immediate gratification, be it chocolate or laundry. I simply don’t like to wait. That is one of the many reasons that I don’t bake chocolate soufflés–because I cannot handle the agony of seeing if it will turn out beautiful and puffed or flat and dreary. I lose enthusiasm for the whole laundry process during the dry time too (not that I am generally very enthused about it to start with). Although, I will take soufflé baking over laundry any day of the week. This next Call is a perfect opportunity for you to contemplate the passage of time, and not just of food and laundry. Think about it…

CALL for ENTRIES: In Time

Time is an essential element of science, philosophy, and religion. Nonetheless its definition has continuously eluded the greatest minds. For In Time, The Kiernan Gallery welcomes images that interpret and define Time as subject matter, whether it be in a historical context of the then and now, time lapse, events and the interval between them, of a crucial moment, preserved for eternity. In a sense, every photograph is an embodiment of time.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists internationally.

MEDIA: All photographic media are encouraged.

NOTIFICATION:
On or around November 3, 2011

ENTRY FEE:
$25 for up to $5 images, then $5 per additional image up to a total of 10 images.

JUROR: Blake Fitch received her BFA on full scholarship from Pratt Institute (1994), with a major in photography and a minor in photo history. She earned her MA in Arts Administration from Boston University in 2001. Documentary in nature, Fitch’s work has focused on the human condition, including themes of: identiry, rites of passage, civil rights, belonging and the investigation of community in third world countries. Her work has been described as graceful and confident. The quality and breadth of her imagery has enabled her to receive a variety of grants and sponsorships including support from Kodak and Calumet Photographic. Her work has been exhibited internationally and held in the collections of numerous museums, including the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Worcester Art Museum, and the George Eastman House of Photography.

AWARDS: The juror will select up to 30 images for display in the main gallery, as well as up to an additional 40 for display in the online gallery. All accepted photographs are eligible for inclusion in a full color exhibition catalogue available for purchase from Blurb Books.

SALES: Artists exhibiting at the gallery may offer their work for sale. The Kiernan Gallery retains 30% of the sale price as commission.

Never miss a food field trip, be it big or small. Like anything else in life, if you miss an opportunity, sometimes you simply don’t ever get the chance again. Perfect example, I have lots of business in California these days in regards to this blogging empire (ha), personal art shows, group shows, etc., but because I didn’t visit The American Center for Wine, Food and the Arts when I DIDN’T have business in California, the opportunity is lost. Their doors closed in 2008. Pick the grapes when they are ripe, folks. This next call is an opportunity in an entirely different kind of Center. Don’t miss this one…

CALL for ENTRIES: Art in the Underbelly

Art in the Under Belly is creative exhibition and performance space in Norwich, UK. Housed beneath The Rumsey Wells, its aim is to offer artists the opportunity to exhibit in an intriguing and unusual environment.

Far from being another gallery, the space is a converted cellar packed into intimate surroundings. There are no white walls or large floor spaces, instead the walls and the space retain much of their original character adding to the individuality of the surroundings. The space is open Monday to Friday, 1-3pm and 12-5pm on Saturdays.

After the success of 2009’s Submit & Exhibit, which saw submissions from as far afield as Pakistan and the USA, Art in the Underbelly is having its second open submission show, set to open in January 2012. Submissions are sought from artists and creative practitioners and anyone who makes work that they think would fit the space.

ELIGIBILITY: People of all levels of artistic availability are invited to submit. They are most interested in work we like the look of rather than years of experience. Hurray!

MEDIA: They are mainly seeking 2D work but there is some room for small 3D work and work that hangs from ceiling spaces.

DEADLINE: November 30th 2011

NOTIFICATION: None indicated.

OPEN CALL: Art Gallery in Monterey, CA

I’ve never been much of a milk drinker. So it is easy to forget how much dairy I consume. I recently had to start taking Cipro, a really strong antibiotic, to try to knock out a irritatingly persistent ear infection, and it can’t be taken with dairy products. I’m on day 5 of a 10 regiment, and I had no idea it would make my life so complicated. Speaking of dairy, did you know that Monterey Jack cheese was made by the Mexican Franciscan friars of Monterey, California, during the 19th century? If you go to the opening of your solo show that you got by sending a proposal to this Call, let me know if they still make it there. Better yet, pick some up for me…

I prefer to drink my soup. Chowder and stew? Give me a spoon and a bowl, but soup calls for the perfect cup. The handle has to be big enough for me to slide my four fingers through, warming my palm against the cup. Should be sturdy enough to keep the soup warm while I sip, but not too heavy to hold for the duration. This next Call might give me a way to drink my soup out of a beautiful piece of art. Trip to Louisiana anyone?

Kieffer has exhibited her work internationally in juried and invitational exhibitions, as well as taught workshops around the country at craft centers and universities.

SALES: Sales are required. Cups should retail for no more than $800. The Gallery will retain 40% of the purchase price of works sold. Prices should reflect this commission.

I love the fusion of classic dishes and modern cuisine. Deconstructed dishes are a perfect example. Like the caesar salad that comes with a mound of romaine, a poached egg and a sardine on crostini. Alternative process photography today is a hybrid of historical techniques and contemporary ideas. Despite, or perhaps because of, the digital revolution, early printing processes are in revival. Whether it is in reaction to digital, or a hybrid process aided by the technology, these techniques remain as evocative and dreamy as they ever were, bringing a unique style to present-day ideas. For Illusion and Chemistry: The Alternative Process, the Kiernan Gallery seeks images that use any alternative processing technique for any idea you wish to express.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists internationally.

MEDIA: Any photographic print created as a product of a non-traditional process is eligible. Processes may include but are not limited to: Albumen, Bromoil, Cyanotype, Daguerreotypes, Gum Bichromate, Platinotypes, Salt Prints, Temeraprints, Tintypes, Wet Plate Collodion. Hybrid or Combination images incorporating conventional (including digital) processes with hand-crafted applications are also eligible. Conventional techniques such as Silver Gelatin, Digital, and C-prints are not eligible.

JUROR: Christopher James is an internationally known artist and photographer whose paintings and alternative process images have been exhibited in galleries and museums in this country and abroad.

His work has been published and shown extensively, including shows in The Museum of Modern Art, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The George Eastman House, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The first edition of his book, The Book of Alternative Photographic Process, received unprecedented critical acclaim and was the winner of The Golden Light Technical Book of the Year award.

In 2008, a greatly expanded, and lavishly illustrated 2nd edition was published by Delmar Cengage and has become universally recognized as the definitive text in the genre. A 3rd edition is currently underway and will be published in 2013. Christopher, after 13 years at Harvard University, is currently University Professor, and Director of the MFA in Photography program at The Art Institute of Boston at Lesley University.

ALL HUNG EXHIBIT: A Book About Death

SAD FOOD

Why is tuna cassarole, of all things, the “go to” dish to take to a family in mourning? I find tuna cassarole depressing, and depression is not supposed to be the end result of taking a covered dish to a family suffering loss. You are supposed to comfort them, make their life simpler by elimating the need to cook. I’m telling you… they throw all 14 of the tuna cassaroles in the trash. I’m just saying that if you feel the need to every bring food to my house, I prefer soup or chocolate anything. This next Call asks that you contemplate death…and maybe even the food that inevitably accompanies it. Investigate…

The size may range from 10.16 cm x 15.24 cm (the smallest size) 4″x6″ to 20.32 cm x 25.4 cm (the largest size) 8″x10″.

So, I wonder what food the audience for a golf tournament would eat? It would need to be finger food you could carry from one hole to the next. And, in theory, it would need to be quiet out of respect for the golfers need to concentrate. Hmmm…if one of you is a golfer or golf fan, let me know. So what does that have to do with this Call?
