What does urban mean to you? I think the one think I miss most about living in a more urban environment is the grocery stores. Certainly I have access to grocery stores in Gatlinburg, but they aren’t the same. Anyone who lives in a large city where their local grocery store is a little treasure trove of ingredients understands my pain. JUROR:Joseph H. Sulkowski began his studies as a painter at America’s oldest art school, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts founded in 1809. He then continued and finished his studies after five years at the venerable Art Students League of New York. There, he met his greatest influence and mentor Frank Mason, the foremost authority on the principles and techniques of the Old Masters, and became, in the very traditional sense of the word, his apprentice.
Mr. Sulkowski has received numerous awards including the AAPL Grand National Award, the Grumbacher Gold Medallion Award and the Best in Show Award at the Art in the Mountains exhibition sponsored by Southwest Art magazine. He is a signature member of the prestigious Society of Animal Artists, the National Society of Mural Painters, the National Arts Club, the American Artists Professional League, and he is a Life Member of the Art Students League of New York.

When I say “Kentucky,” what immediately comes to mind? You may be surprised to hear that I don’t immediately think KFC, ha. No, I always think Kentucky Derby, big hats and mint juleps. It is interesting how some events can become tied to an entire state’s image. I love the Derby, but Kentucky has lots to offer including an excellent National Juried Art Show.

I’ve been receiving lots of email in the past few weeks. For some reason, many of my readers prefer to email me directly as opposed to leaving comments. I love it. Thank you. This year’s theme, Through a Lens: Inspiration or Desperation is about evoking one of two strong emotional responses: Inspiration or Despair. Possible subjects could include people, places or things that inspire or cause feelings of despair.

I often wonder what I would eat if I only had one meal left. I can’t wrap my brain around it, really. Someone emailed me an appreciative note about my recent post featuring arubber chicken. I explained that finding Calls for Entry day after day was far easier than figuring out how to make a food reference day after day. Ex Arte Equinus is an international art competition dedicated to presenting the equine as fine art. The amount of equine artists working today is astounding. Ex Arte Equinus is a chance for artists worldwide to have their work recognized in a fine art format, in a competition that will provide equine artists the opportunity to compete and have their work seen on an international level.
Images of winning artwork will be published in issue #12 of Art Horse Magazine (published March 2011). Winners and selected images will also be published in a limited edition hardback book about the show, available from Art Horse Magazine.
ELIGIBILITY:Contest is open to artists worldwide. Open to artists 17 years and older. All artwork must be original work executed by the artist. Works produced by non-human artists are not eligible. Works based on a photograph must have the photographer’s permission before entering that work. Works must include a suggestion of an equine form in the image submitted (i.e. a still life painting of tack or hunting dogs would not be acceptable for this show).
