My family enjoys joking… that if I continue moving to towns with smaller and smaller populations that I will eventally live in complete isolation except, of course, for my husband, internet access, food delivery, my dogs and a separate home for my shoe collection. Funny, eh? There is something to be said for both urban AND country living. I love them both, but buying fresh eggs and goat milk from a farm on my way home has skewed my objectivity just a smidge.

I cannot wait to see the results of the Call for Entries for The Urban and Country Landscape Annual Book from The Worldwide Photography Gala Awards. It is a type of art publication–which you know I love, and part published exhibit. There is no entry fee unless you are accepted. Take advantage of this great opportunity to both tell your story and show your work.

CALL for ENTRIES: Urban and Country Landscape

The Worldwide Photography Gala Awards invite photographers from all over the world to submit their work to be featured in The Urban and Country Landscape Annual Book – Nature and People, Life and Culture, and in the online WonderPick Gallery.

In this occasion WPGA wants to select images displaying your city or neighborhood, or that city that you visited this summer or in past years, or it can be the country landscape of your dreams, that one that have stimulated your eyes and your imagination; images about the city and the country life, the culture in your home town or in the remote Bhutan or in La Havana; images of that unforgettable wedding or of your family during a remarkable week-end or at home.

The theme is ample and everything will depend on your interpretation, knowing that we will like to screen landscapes and cityscapes with or without people in the scene. People can be predominant in the scene.
Both color and black and white (including duotones, toned) will be accepted to be screened. Abstract, micro and macro images will not be accepted. All kind of processes, including digital manipulation will be accepted.

The selection process: There will be two screenings

First screening: Selection will be done by WPGA’s artistic and editorial staff. The first screening will be conducted to accept or reject the submitted works. There’s is no entry fee to submit works to the first screening, and you may submit a minimum of 3 images and a maximum of 12 images.

Within 1 week after the reception of the images sent for consideration of the jurors in the first screening, submitters will be notified by email detailing which works have been accepted and which have been rejected. Together with the notification’s email a brief structured feedback will be provided.

Second screening: Selection will be done by Julio Hardy, WPGA’s Managing Director. Accepted images in the first screening will be included in the second screening and entered in the competition. Those works which passed the first screening will be exhibited for one year in the online WonderPick gallery, and available for sale.

During the second screening, 80 images will be selected to be featured in The Urban and Country Landscape Annual Book – Nature and People, Life and Culture.

ENTRY FEES: There is NO INITAL ENTRY FEE. Participants in the second screening will have to pay an entry fee within 1 week after receiving the notification that their image/s have pass the first screening and have been entered into the competition.

The entry fee for those works selected (those that have passed the first screening and have been entered into the competition) will be: $15 for each image accepted, up to 3 images; and $8 for each additional image.

PAYMENT OF FEES: Once the number of images selected in the first screening –and that have therefore been entered into the competition- an email will be sent to you as well as a Paypal invoice with the entry fees to be paid according to the calculation based on the images accepted, to settle the entry fees.

Prizes: Best Image of Show (to be featured in the book cover) will receive a $ 500 B&H gift certificate. Runner up (to be featured in the book back cover) $ 300 B&H gift certificate.

I am a wierdo, admittedly. I am obsessed with food. I don’t drink coffee. I rarely wear pants. I won’t do much that can’t be done in four inch heels, and I don’t like prints…unless they are geometric. Oh yeah, that is just the tip of the weirdness iceberg. I like geometric food too…Gorgeous round egg yolks, little logs of goat cheese, and the perfect grid of a golden waffle.

CALL for ENTRIES: Snap to Grid at LACDA

Show your work in our un-juried exhibit featuring digital art and photography. All entries will be printed (8.5″x11″ on heavyweight paper) and shown in our gallery arranged in a grid. Entrants submit JPEG files of original work.

Multiple entries are permitted. Separate registration required for each image. Exhibit is limited to space available, early entry is advised.

All styles of artwork and photography where digital processes of any kind were integral to the creation of the images are acceptable. Digital video stills and screen shots of web/new media are acceptable. Documentation shots of digital installation and digital sculpture are acceptable.

Gallery Statement: “Every year for 50 years the L.A. Municipal Gallery has held its ‘Open Call’ exhibit where any artist can show up with their art and an entry fee (to benefit gallery programs) and the piece is shown.

I have spent the last two days in a ballroom in Northwest Tennessee at a corporate conference. As you might imagine, the rubber chicken served at ALL of the conferences was not the highlight of my culinary experience. However, I am most surprised that what I missed. More than anything, I missed the sunlight on my face. Flourescent lighting is not your friend. Every chance I could find between seminars I stood in the sun.

CALL FOR ENTRIES: The Spice of Light

Fine art nature photographers create emotions, feelings and memories. Sometimes Mother Nature gives you the perfect light, the perfect composition, the perfect colors, and you are able to present your experience exactly as the lens captured it.

Unfortunately, most of the time…she doesn’t. This doesn’t lessen the excitement, the drama, you experienced at the moment of capture. At times like this, you have to go deep within yourself to discover the colors, lines, and shapes that not only express what you experienced, but also transfer that emotion to the viewer.

Color: the Spice of Light is your opportunity to express nature in a manner that doesn’t necessarily express reality, but does express your feelings and experience at the moment of capture. And, by all means, if nature gave you that “perfect moment”, then submit that moment! The Juror wants to see drama through the use of composition, color and light….an image that makes the viewer want to stop and spend time with your creation….an image that makes the viewer FEEL! Remember, it’s within the beauty of nature that we find the essence of our souls.

JUROR: Bruce K. Haley, Jr. uses the camera lens as his paint brush. His bold and colorful presentation of nature has made his work much sought after throughout the United States.

Since November of 2002, Haley’s award-winning art has appeared in over one-hundred exhibitions in West Virginia, Ohio, Kentucky, Colorado, North Carolina Michigan, and California. His work is included in many corporate and private collections including six pieces purchased by the state of West Virginia for their permanent art collection.

In Bruce’s words, “Photography isn’t about f/stops, shutter speeds or equipment. it’s about living, feeling, seeing. It’s about opening my mind to learning, not only about the people, places and things around me, but also, about me. Photography, for me, is life living, life giving.”

RULES FOR PHOTO SUBMISSIONS:

Age: Entrants must be at least 18 years old. If younger. a parent or legal guardian may make the submission for you.

Ownership: All submitted photos must have been taken by the photographer making the entry. If you are a parent or legal guardian submitting for a minor, please make it clear.

Digital Submissions: All submissions must be made by digital files through:

1. Upload on VermontPhotoSpace.com or

2. Sent via email to submissions@VermontPhotoSpace.com. This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it along with an application form. There is a $5.00 surcharge for email entries.

3. Images should be as large as possible but no larger than 1280 pixels on the longest side, type jpg – set to the highest quality. DPI can be set to any number, but if you must specify something go with 72 dpi.

FEES: Up to three images may be submitted for a fee of $20 US for on-line submission and $25 for email submission. Additional images may be submitted for an additional $5 US per image.

DEADLINE: Images and payment must be received by midnight EST on the submission closing date October 28, 2010.

RIGHTS: Photographers retain all rights to their work, except for submissions accepted for exhibition: artists grant Vermont Photo Space the right to use their images to promote the exhibition and for display on VPS website and for inclusion in an exhibit catalog.

Vermont Photo Space Gallery provides free matting and framing of accepted entries for the duration of each of our exhibitions, subject to standard sizes. Photographers set their own prices if they wish to sell their work, and retain all rights.

A GOOD EGG

We all know that I love food, but it occured to me that I don’t mention that I love cooks and chefs often enough. There is little better in this world than a well crafted Eggs Benedict. And, while the eggs are best when farm fresh, hollandaise in the wrong hands is just BAD regardless of how fresh the eggs are. I feel much the same about craft artisans.

A scarf isn’t always just a scarf…ask Pat K. Thomas. And certainly, jewelry isn’t always just jewelry…ask Vanessa Walilko. A National Compact Competition and Exhibit

This is a competitive juried exhibition in the LSU Student Union Art Gallery at Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge. It is sponsored by the LSU Student Union Art Gallery Advisory Committee.

Expected attendance is 3,000 visitors.

The LSU Student Union Art Gallery Advisory Committee, composed of volunteer LSU students, faculty, staff and community members, is responsible for the selection of art exhibits and programs in the LSU Student Union Art Gallery. They are pleased to sponsor this national two- and three-dimensional compact art competition and exhibit for the 15th year.

ELIGIBILITY: This juried exhibition is open to artists residing in the United States. Submissions need to be less than 20″x20″x20″ excluding matting and framing. Work needs to be completed within the last two years. Works previously exhibited in the LSU Student Union Art Gallery are ineligible.

PRIZES: Artists compete for $6,000 in cash awards.

The response to the last cell phone photo show that I posted was overwhelmingly positive, and you know how I love positive feedback. To that end, I decided to encourage the spontaneous photographer in us all. When inspecting my own cell phone shots for this post, I realized much to my surprise that I take an alarmingly large number of cell pics of both my food and the places I eat. Hmmmm…

INTERNATIONAL Art Competition: JAPAN

I often post international artist residency opportunities and get lots of email in return that basically says, “I wish.” And, believe me, I understand the frustration of needing the inspiration and time and space of a residency, but not being able to afford the luxury of a month in Spain or Chile. Well, what if I told you that you could get the full foreign tour AFTER you do the work? Stop and smell the sushi, folks.

Check out this International Art Competition and Exhibition from Sakuraba Gallery in Japan. The artists that are selected to exhibit will be brought to Japan from their home country to attend the opening reception. Airfare, cost of hotel stay for up to ten days, and a small group tour of Sendai are included. ENTER TODAY!

CALL for ENTRIES: International Art Competition–Japan

Next year, Sakuraba Gallery will host an art competition to recognize the best artists from outside of Japan. The artists that are selected to exhibit will be brought to Japan from their home country to attend the opening reception.

Airfare, cost of hotel stay for up to ten days, and a small group tour of Sendai are included. Meals and spending money are not provided.

The opening reception will be held on February 5th, 2011 at 19:00. The exhibition will be open from that day until April 2nd 2011.

GUIDELINES: Artists must submit a completed entry form and pay a non-refundable entry fee of $30 US dollars (via Paypal or Google Checkout) to submit 3 works of art.

ELIGIBILITY: The competition is open to artists 18 years of age or older world-wide; however, artists must not currently reside in Japan or have resided in the past for longer than two years. Artists cannot be Japanese citizens or hold duel citizenship with Japan and another country. Publishers, galleries, agents, and collectors may not submit artwork on behalf of artists.

All works submitted must be original in design and concept. Artwork must not be copied, in part or wholly, from any published or copyrighted work. Artwork based upon a copy-written work for the sake of parody or critic is acceptable on a case by case basis.

MEDIA: Drawings, paintings, printmaking, photography, digital art, sculpture, installations, ceramics, fiber art, wearable art, jewelry, and mixed media. Media not accepted: Video/film and live performance pieces.

Acceptance/Notification: Artists will be notified by January 5, 2011 as to whether or not they have been selected for the exhibition. Winners have 24 hours to accept or decline the invitation to come to Sendai. Gallery staff will begin working with the artist immediately to make travel arrangements. For those who decline, an alternative cash prize of $1000 will be awarded. Award winners will be announced to the public with the opening reception on February 5, 2011.

ART PUBLICATION: Artist Portfolio Magazine

Missed my art publication rants? You know you did. Well, I have a new one for you. All media coverage of your art, even the bad stuff, is good stuff. I have a big show of my own coming up in April 2011 in Phoenix, and at least one of the pieces is VERY controversial. I contemplated, if only for a moment, lighting a fire under some very conservative folks known for their highly sensitive moral sensibilities…just for the bad press…but I didn’t…I haven’t…yet. Hehehe.

The point is…Artist Portfolio Magazine is about to produce its inaugural issue, and they are looking for cover art. I know, I know–stop rolling your eyes. Just let me just get the whole thing out there. Artist Portfolio Magazine is a DIGITAL magazine and is the love-child of MyArtContest.com. There–that’s the whole enchilada. I’m just saying…all press is good press. Life is too short to be jaded. You’ll KICK yourself later if you missed out on a chance for the first bite of the whole enchilada.

The first issue of Artist Portfolio Magazine is just about full, and now they need a great piece of art for the cover.

CALL for ENTRIES: National Juried Art Show

I CANNOT TELL A LIE

I love National and International juried art shows. As much as I love a theme, I also love the sort of County Fair idea of the best and the brightest that the art world has to offer all lined up for the viewer regardless of media, content or technique. I’m not suggesting a low-brow affair or a pie-eating contest. I simply applaud the optimism is takes to put on a show expecting the spectacular arrival of little (and big) gems from parts unknown.

Check out the 14th Annual National Juried Art Show from Gallery West in Alexandria, Virginia–just a stone’s throw from Washington, DC. Here’s a great chance to pay a reasonable entry fee, for your work to be reviewed by a well-respected juror to possibly be shown in a great gallery. It is a perfect combination.

CALL for ENTRIES: 14th Annual National Juried Art Show

Gallery West, Ltd., is pleased to announce its 14th Annual National Juried Fine Arts Competition for 2011. Just across the Potomac River from Washington, D. C., Gallery West is a fine arts gallery located in the heart of Old Town, Alexandria, Virginia.

At their location on King Street, Gallery West is surrounded by high-end boutiques, art galleries, antique shops, fine restaurants and hotels. Gallery West, founded in 1979, is owned and operated by Washington area artists of all media.

REQUIREMENTS: Open to all local or national artists 18+ years. Original fine art in any medium is acceptable. No videos or reproductions. Original 2-D/3D only. Works on paper 24” or larger in the long dimension must be framed behind plexiglas. Clip mounts will not be accepted. Works on canvas may be wrapped around stretchers if painting extends along the sides. Stretchers must be at least 1” deep. Work that is wet will not be accepted. Maximum framed size not to exceed 30” x 40” or 72ui. All two-dimensional works must be ready for hanging with hooks and wire.

ENTRY METHOD: Entry Fee is $35 for up to three works. Additional works, $10 each. Jurying will be from digital images. CD’s must be labeled with artist’s name (last name first), titles, and medium. Digital images should be 72ppi, RGB jpeg format with maximum 600 pixels in any one dimension. File names should be artist’s last name followed by title. Example: JonesBlueSquares. Acceptance of any digital entry is contingent on seeing the real object.

DEADLINE: Received by November 12, 2010.

JUROR: F. Lennox Campello is one of the Mid Atlantic’s best known arts personalities. Educated in art at the University of Washington School of Art, Campello is an award-winning artist, a widely published freelance art critic, and a curator with more than one hundred curated exhibitions under his belt.

A radio and TV personality, he is often heard on NPR, the Voice of America and MHZ TV’s “ArtsMedia News” discussing art issues as a former and charter Associate Dealer for Sothebys.com and one of the internet’s seminal visual arts bloggers. His Daily Campello Art News is one of the web’s earliest and most popular art blogs with nearly a million visitors a year. Campello is also the co-founder of the Fraser Galleries of Washington, DC and Bethesda, Maryland, which he co-owned for ten years until 2006. His work was recently selected by well-known art collector Mera Rubell for the “Cream” auction at the Katzen Art Museum.

ART COMPETITION: Go, Speed Racer, Go!

I suspect you’ll judge me, but I have to admit that there are more than a few classic cartoons that are a part of my every day life. I realize that I am dating myself, but on this Labor Day weekend…I have no doubt that Boo Boo would love to steal my pic-a-nic basket when I am at Bays Mountain Park. Umhmmm…

ART COMPETITION:
2010 Speed Racer International Art Competition

You have the opportunity to create art based on the classic Speed Racer™ cartoon and win in the competition, have the original Speed Racer™ art you create sold, have your artwork Published and made available for sale as a Limited Edition print, perhaps even have the Speed Racer™ art you create licensed for use on products and apparel…

All the while gaining valuable exposure for you and your art. It’s an exciting competition and we look forward to your participation! Emerging and established artists are invited to enter.

MEDIA: Painting, Drawing, Photography, Digital, Print (etching, lithograph, silkscreen, linoleum cut, woodcut, monotype…), Sculpture and Video. Multiple entries can be made in as many categories as desired.

Examples of art you can create include placing Speed Racer™ image(s) in a new context; making new drawing(s), painting(s), etc of Speed™ and/or other character(s), car(s), etc; a photo of a model dressed like Speed™ and/or other character(s) and a sculpture of Speed and/or the Mach 5™… Videos are 1 min max and can include digital art, re-editing existing scenes mixed with art, actor(s)… You can direct/act in and do a monologue, spoken word, a scene… There’s no limit to what you can create! DATES: The competition start date is August 10th, 2010 at 9 AM EST and the deadline to submit art is October 31st, 2010 at 8 PM EST. During the first week of November 2010, a total of SEVEN (7) WINNERS shall be selected in each category, for a total of FORTY NINE (49) WINNERS.

ART PANELISTS: A diverse panel of art professionals—including MAXIMILLIAN GALLERY founder Caradoc Ehrenhalt and international Art Dealer Sonce Leroux, will select the winners in the Art Panelists Competition.

The panel will select three artists as the 2010 Speed Racer™ Art Competition Winners. Each Artist will be awarded: First Place, Second Place or Third Place Juried Competition WinnerA Limited Edition print of the First Place winner’s art published by MAXIMILLIAN GALLERY with 5 prints from the edition given to the artist; Participation in the MAXIMILLIAN GALLERY 2010 Speed Racer™ International Art Competition Exhibition to be held at a location to be determined; Featured in the press release announcing the winners; Featured in winners area on the website; Art licensing representation and Art gallery representation.

The public will vote online for their favorite Speed Racer art with awards as follows:

First Place Public Vote Winner: First Place Public Vote Winner; A Limited Edition print of the First Place winner’s art published by MAXIMILLIAN GALLERY with 5 prints from the edition given to the artist; Participation in the MAXIMILLIAN GALLERY 2010 Speed Racer™ International Art Competition Exhibition to be held at a location to be determined; Featured in the press release announcing winners; Featured in winners area on the website; Art licensing representation; and Art gallery representation.

Second and Third Place Public Vote Winners: Second Place or Third Place Public Vote Winner; Featured in the press release announcing winners; and Featured in winners area on the website.

Gallery Founder Caradoc Ehrenhalt will also select a Winner. ENTRY FEES: Each entry submitted by September 15th 2010 is $25, after September 15th 2010 each entry submitted by October 31st, 2010 is $35. Each additional entry made by an Entrant who wishes to submit additional work by September 15th 2010 is $15, after September 15th 2010 each additional entry made by an Entrant who wishes to submit additional work by October 31st is $25.
