There is a point at which loving food turns into a food obsession. I am self-aware enough to know that I have long passed that point. I cannot simply EAT anything. Eating requires dissection and discussion before digestion. Dinner is often cold by the time it is eaten fully. Check out this Open Call from The Soap Factory (Minneapolis, MN). The Soap factory is looking for work for group exhibits, AND they offer installation support, travel, accommodations, and a stipend to those selected to exhibit. Did I mention NO ENTRY FEE?

OPEN CALL:
The Soap Factory

The Soap Factory exhibits work in its galleries throughout the year. Exhibitions curated from submissions and could have as many as 8 artists. The Soap Factory is a 120-year old ex-industrial warehouse on the banks of the Mississippi River in Minneapolis.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists. They are particularly interested in proposals conceived specifically for The Soap Factory galleries. (So do your homework!) Their programming is unique in that they select only a small proportion of the artists they exhibit from their pool of submissions. They commonly receive 400 artist submissions per season.

MEDIA:
All Media may be considered.

DEADLINE: April 30, 2012. They do NOT accept e-mailed submissions. So please keep in mind that this is a POSTMARK deadline.

Dinner is cooked (and eaten) in either undies or pajamas in my house. My husband usually cooks dinner. Dinner is cooked directly after work. My husband is a commercial potter. How are these connected? My hubby is forced (by me) to get out of his clay embedded clothing in the garage to prevent a gray trail in his wake. The Workhouse Arts Center is proud to announce a call for entries for its 2nd Annual Workhouse Clay National Ceramics Exhibition 2012.

This 2nd Annual Workhouse Clay National Ceramics Exhibition is an “Open Call” for functional and/or sculptural ceramic artworks.

The focus of this year’s exhibit is to highlight the tremendous variety and depth of contemporary functional and sculptural ceramic artworks being created throughout the U.S.A. today.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists

MEDIA: All works must be primarily ceramic. Mixed media works will be accepted only if ceramic materials are the primary media.

DEADLINE: May 2, 2012

NOTIFICATION: June 1, 2012

ENTRY FEE: $30.00 (for up to 3 works).

JUROR: Peter Held received his bachelor’s degree in studio art with an emphasis on ceramics from the State University of New York, Brockport. Upon graduation, he moved to Helena, Montana to become a resident artist at the Archie Bray Foundation for the Ceramic Arts. He later completed a master’s degree in museum administration at Oregon State University and interned at the Portland Art Museum in the Asian Art Department.

Held returned to Helena in 1994 to serve as executive director and curator of the Holter Museum of Art, where he helped successfully lead a $2.3 million capital and endowment campaign. Since 2003, Held has been curator of ceramics at the ASU Art Museum Ceramics Research Center at Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona. He also serves as a trustee for the American Craft Council and is chair of its development committee.

AWARDS: Best of Show- $350; 1^st place-$250- Sponsored by Standard Ceramics, Inc.; 2^nd Place-$150; and Honorable Mentions.

SALES: All work must be available for sale. LAF will retain a 40% sales commission from sold work. Payment is made on the 15th of each month for the previous month’s sales.

CALL for ENTRIES: Sense of Place

FOOD MEMORIES

Frequently, the sense memory I have with food OFTEN brings me to a specific place. Antipasti reminds me of romantic living room picnics with my sweet husband that have become the tradition of our marriage. Boiled peanuts remind me of combing the flea markets of South Carolina for hidden treasures. Soft, doughy pretzels remind me of laughing hysterically with my kid on the Scrambler at the State Fair. The Gertrude Herbert Institute of Art is pleased to announce its 2012 juried fine art competition, A Sense of Place. Open to participants from throughout the United States, this thirty-second annual event seeks to recognize the outstanding quality and diversity of work being generated by contemporary American artists.

Founded in 1937 and housed in the historic Nicholas Ware mansion (c. 1818), the Gertrude Herbert Institute of Art (GHIA) is Augusta’s only independent nonprofit visual arts school and gallery. The Institute serves as a showcase for local, regional, and national artists, offering rotating exhibitions of outstanding contemporary artwork year-round. In addition, professionally taught studio art classes in a wide variety of media are provided to students of all ages and experience levels.

ELIGIBILITY: All US artists age 18+

MEDIA: Categories: painting, drawing, mixed media, printmaking, ceramics, sculpture, and photography. *Editor’s Note: “A Sense of Place” is not the theme.

ENTRY FEE: $30 for up to 3 works; add’l works for $5 each

JUROR: Nancy Solomon is the director of Solomon Projects, a critically acclaimed art gallery based in Atlanta, Georgia, dedicated to new and experimental solo presentations by emerging and mid-career artists. She attended Columbia University’s Barnard College in New York, receiving her bachelor of arts degree in art history.

Prior to her move to Atlanta, Ms. Solomon worked at the Lisson Gallery in London. In 1998, she was the recipient of the Georgia Women in the Arts Award, awarded by the State of Georgia.

From 1997 through 1999, Ms. Solomon was a board member of Art Papers and served on its Editorial Advisory Board in 2004–2005. Additional prior experience in the visual arts field includes working with modern and contemporary masters in Paris, as well as with Gallery Moos in New York City. Ms. Solomon grew up in France and was educated in Geneva, Switzerland.

AWARDS: Three cash prizes will be given, including a $750 Best of Show Award and two $500 Juror’s Awards. At the juror’s discretion, additional non-cash Honorable Mention awards may also be presented.

SALES: Sales will be encouraged, and all works are assumed to be available for purchase unless designated “Not For Sale” (NFS). A 35% gallery commission will be charged on sales of all exhibited artwork.

And, although my new home has some unbelievable barbeque, I have to admit that I still miss a little mustard based pork now and then. JUROR: William Moreno is a curator, writer and director of William Moreno Contemporary which mounts periodic exhibitions. He was most recently the Associate Director of ArtPadSF, a hotel-based art fair. William was the founding Executive Director of the Claremont Museum of Art and the director of The Mexican Museum, San Francisco.

He has been a featured panelist addressing topics ranging from the contemporary role of museums and the international art landscape at San Francisco’s Commonwealth Club, the American Institute of Architecture, Latino Art Now Conference, William Turner Gallery, ArtPadSF, Flagstop and others. He has appeared on KCET’s series California’s Gold as well as other media. William serves as board President of LACE (Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions) and on the Advisory Board for the California Association of Museums.

SALES: All work will be considered for sale unless otherwise indicated on the entry form. Proceeds from work sold: 60% to the artist, 40% to OCCCA. Checks to the artists are processed within 10 days of the close of the show.

While watching a TV show about how salami is made, my son announced that eating the organs of an animal is wrong. An expanded new edition of her book, Digital Art was published in spring 2008 and her edited anthology, New Media in the White Cube and Beyond – Curatorial Models for Digital Art, was published by UC Press in December 2008.

Zohn’s previous work was with Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts, Reynolda House Museum of American Art and Albany Museum of Art in Georgia. Ms. Miller Zohn served as Curator of Education at the Columbus Museum for six years before moving to her current position in 2007.

Zohn is a contributing author for American Art in the Columbus Museum: Painting, Sculpture and Decorative Arts and to the forthcoming The New Encyclopedia of Southern Culture, Vol. 20, Art and Architecture.

Genetically modified food scares the crap out of me. I understand, economically speaking, why food is modified. But it doesn’t matter how much disease-resistant, mutant corn you can produce if everyone has three heads and glows in the dark. Am I suggest that genetically-modified corn causes these symptoms? No. I am suggesting that none of us know WHAT the end result could be. I’m planting heirloom varieties in my patch in the back yard this year. Treasured seeks to reveal the beauty and vulnerability of the endangered and the threatened. From disappearing plant and animal species, to vanishing languages, customs, and cultures, to threatened ecosystems, this exhibit will highlight the intricacies and fragility of precious and vanishing worlds.

The jury seeks artwork that examines these entities, with particular interest in pieces that highlight urgency through delicacy and severity through subtlety, as they honor the distinct beauty inherent to each.

ELIGIBILITY: The exhibition is open to artists age 18 and older working in the U.S.

MEDIA: All media types are welcome; small to large scale; indoors and outdoors.

DEADLINE:
March 31, 2012

NOTIFICATION:
Via email on or before April 16, 2012

ENTRY FEE: Artists must submit a $25 non-refundable entry fee for up to four entries. Entry fee must be paid by check, money order, or credit card. Each entry must be submitted with three images of the artwork, including one overall view of the artwork, one detail shot, and one installation shot. There is a returned check fee of $25.

JUROR: Treasured will be juried by a 1-2 member panel.

AWARDS: Annmarie will present cash awards to outstanding work. Jurors will review installed works (not application images) for award selection. If possible, selection will occur prior to the exhibit opening and awards will be presented at the opening reception. Award amounts are contingent upon sponsorship; typically there are at least three awards ranging from $250-$750 each. All award winning artists will receive an invitation for a solo or group show.

SALES: Works selected for exhibition cannot be removed before the end of the exhibition. Should a sale resulting from the exhibition occur, Annmarie will retain a 40% commission of the listed sale price.

With ten years behind them, they have grown both nostalgic for the journeys they’ve been on and full of anticipation for what lies ahead. They look for art that is a sign post providing guidance for a unique place and time on your travels.

ELIGIBILITY: The show is open to artists 18 years and older.

MEDIA: 2 and 3 dimensional art executed within two years of entry date and not previously been displayed in the library.

DEADLINE: May 31, 2012

NOTIFICATION: July 31, 2012

ENTRY FEE: Entry fee is $35. Checks payable to the Northbrook Public Library. A maximum of 3 entries per artist fee will be judged.

JURY PROCESS: Artists should be cognizant that the exhibition is open to the general public and artwork must be viewable for all ages. Pieces will be judged on artistic quality and execution as well as thematic relevance. Artists should consider the theme, “Journeys”.

SALES & COMMISSION: The NPL does NOT charge a commission for show participation. All sales inquires will be referred to the artists. Contact information, provided by the artist, will be listed in the online and printed show catalog to facilitate sales. The only sale to be handled by the NPL will be the purchase of the first-place award winner.

AWARDS: One (1) $2000 purchase prize, one (1) second place cash award of $1000, one (1) third place cash award of $500, and two (2) Viewer’s Choice cash awards of $200.
