I am a magazine reader. Yep, the paper ones. I read and peruse imagery as motivation for household projects, photography and, of course, cooking. One of my favorite food magazines? Food and Wine, of course. I have delusions of grandeur each and every time I watch Top Chefs that I could win that show and have my work featured in F&W. Instead, I am opting to submit my art to this Call for Creative Quarterly. Do you think Food & Wine will be so impressed they will cover my food anyway? Me neither. Anyway, don’t miss this opportunity…

By launching a new redesign, they’ve become a much more interactive journal. They search the web for interesting projects in art and design to share with their readers. They ask their readers to share what inspires them. The purpose, not to copy but to inspire.

Take a look at back issues of Creative Quarterly! Inspiration can come from an innovative chair design or an unusual ring or from an interview with a well-known designer or artist or something from ones past.

Creative Quarterly is the best of art and design, quarterly.

Open to Interpretation is a juried book competition of photography, poetry, fiction and creative non-fiction. Each book begins with a themed call for photos. The chosen photos become the literary inspiration for the writers’ submissions. A book is created that matches each winning photo with two stories or poems that offer different interpretations of the image. The unique collaboration adds new dimensions to both the photos and the written word.

ARTIST RESIDENCY: 1 Week River Retreat

ARTIST RESIDENCY: Trade River Retreat Center

Vision Quest Photo Workshops announces a new yearly grant of a one-week photographic artist’s residency. Spend five days to one week alone in the woods devoted to nourishing your artistic spirit at Vision Quest’s Trade River Retreat Center in NW Wisconsin.

For mid-career fine-art photographers looking for a retreat-like experience to work on their art, reflect on their artistic direction, make new photographs, plan new career paths, have time away from work/family/life pressure and stress or use in any way they find useful to move their art or career forward or use the time away to simply reflect on where they are and where they are headed.

Stay in a very private retreat in the woods along the banks of a pristine sand-bottom river. The Trade River Retreat Center is located near Grantsburg, Wisconsin, an hour and a half from the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and Saint Paul, MN.

Modern facilities include full bathroom with hot and cold running water, heat, electricity, phone, modern kitchen, wood-burning fireplace, sauna, fire-pit, library and stereo system. See student photos made at the Trade River Retreat Center.

The residency will include a private consultation, in person or via phone or Skype, with Vision Quest Photo Workshops founder and director Douglas Beasley before the week begins to help set the tone and scope of time spent there and also after its conclusion, to discuss its impact on future artistic endeavors.

ENTRY FEE: There is a $20 application fee.

SUBMISSIONS: Submit 12 .jpeg images. Also send a 300 to 500-word artist statement about your past and current work and overall artistic direction, and a 300 to 500-word statement of what you would like to do with your residency.

IMAGE GUIDELINES:

sRGB or RGB color space (standard) – not CMYK.
Save files to 72 dpi resolution, flattened layers, 8 bit JPG files.
Sized to 1280 pixels on the longest side.
JPG compression at level 7 (medium). This compression level will not affect the quality of the images viewed on the monitor.
Enter zero in the field for width, height and depth.
Each image should be titled.
DO NOT USE characters other than a period or underscore preceding jpg in the file name. The following characters !@#$%^&*()+?/"~ will lead to image uploading problems.

Thanks to facebook, I am regularly made aware of the gastronomic adventures of hundreds of my friends. Unfortunately, due to the number of my friends that are artists that also read this blog… I must honestly admit that I am among the worst of the offenders. I submit evidence of my guilt by posting this picture to the left of delicious Buckberry Bread Pudding that I took yesterday at The Lodge at Buckberry Creek. Likely you’ve got your phone with you at all times, while you’ve forgotten your dSLR or film camera at home. You wouldn’t dare leave your phone at home, would you? It’s liberating, knowing your cell or smartphone can take a picture, anytime, anywhere.

As Photographers, you’ve likely engaged in the heated discussion over the capability, viability, credibility of the camera phone. Purists scoff at the intrusion of a mediocre, fraud of a device, that is marring their photographic religion. And then there are the rest of you, embracing the technology and embracing the all-in-one, multi-media lifestyle of the cellphone-toting imagist, so many of you have become.

JUROR: Dan Burkholder has a long history of looking over the photographic horizon to see, explore and teach the next great thing in imaging. His newest book, iPhone Artistry (Pixiq Press, 2011), is the definitive how-to for creative iPhone photographers. His first book, Making Digital Negatives for Contact Printing (Bladed Iris Press, 1995) became a seminal manual for photographers wanting to blend the power of digital imaging with the charm of the handmade print.

Dan received his B.A. and Master’s degrees from Brooks Institute of Photography, in Santa Barbara, CA. Dan has taught digital imaging workshops for 16 years on three continents and several island countries.

Burkholder’s platinum / palladium and pigmented ink prints are included in private and public collections internationally.

PHOTO SUBMISSIONS:

Age: Entrants must be at least 18 years old. If younger, a parent or legal guardian may make the submission for you.

Ownership: All submitted photos must have been taken by the photographer making the entry.

If you are a parent or legal guardian submitting for a minor, please make it clear on the submission form.

Digital Submissions: All submissions must be made by digital files through:

1. Upload on the Dark Room Gallery website or

2. Sent via email to submissions (at) VermontPhotoSpace.com. This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it along with an application form. There is a $5.00 surcharge for email entries.

3. Images should be as large as possible but no larger than 1280 pixels on the longest side, type jpg – set to the highest quality. DPI can be set to any number, but if you must specify something to go with 72 dpi.

FEES: Up to three images may be submitted for a fee of $20 US for on-line submission and $25 for email submission. Additional images may be submitted for an additional $5 US per image.

DEADLINE: Images and payment must be received by midnight EST on May 24, 2011.

RIGHTS: Photographers retain all rights to their work, except for submissions accepted for exhibition: artists grant Dark Room Gallery/Vermont Photo Space the right to use their images to promote the exhibition on the website and for inclusion in an exhibit catalog.

Darkroom Gallery provides free matting and framing of accepted entries for the duration of each of our exhibitions, subject to standard sizes. Photographers set their own prices if they wish to sell their work, and retain all rights.

I take some foods for granted. Friday I learned a valuable lesson: I am addicted to granola bars. My beloved husband packs my daily lunch that I then refrigerate or reheat at my office. CALL for ENTRIES: Can You See Me Now?

A trio of nationally known photographic professionals will accept a single image from up to 50 photographers and the announcement of selections will be made June 6.

It will be the responsibility of the individual photographers to supply a high resolution file of the selected image from which an exhibition print can be made. The exhibition will premier on July 29 at [Artspace] at Untitled with an opening reception and will continue through Oct 1, 2011.

ELIGIBILITY: Local, regional and national artists

MEDIA: Photographs made on cell phones

NOTIFICATION: June 6, 2011

ENTRY FEE: Payment of the $25 entry fee (for up to 6 images) is to be made via PayPal using the link at the bottom of the Call Page. Just the other day, I admitted my food stereotypes about Phoenix. I’ll continue today with Texan food stereotypes. I think steak or Tex-Mex. All things Mexican or Spanish, right? I never thought of chicken fried steak. Chicken fried steak is considered German, a derivative of Wiener Schnitzel, a veal steak deep-fried in a breadcrumb batter. CALL for ENTRIES: Naturalist Art Show

Hubbard Art & Naturalist Fest is a juried wildlife and nature art contest with $1000 in prizes. All 2D mediums accepted; artwork should depict either the Hubbard City Lakes (in Texas) themselves or a species native to the Central Texas area.

Fine art/select vendor spots for the Festival (including ecosport, fine art, select fine craft with an outdoors theme) are available as well – but not required to enter the art contest. The Hubbard Art & Naturalist Fest is held October 14-16, 2011.

ELIGIBILITY: The subject matter of the entries should be based on one of the following: a) the Hubbard City Lakes themselves which are located in Central Texas or b) species native to the Hubbard area, including flora, fauna, insect life, etc.

MEDIA:

CALL for ENTRIES: Modern Landscape

Dacia Gallery is seeking entries for a month-long group show by emerging artists for a Juried, Landscape Exhibition. They are looking for a wide range of styles that push the realms of the modern landscape. All artwork must have a concentration on the landscape. The artwork may be traditional landscapes, flowers in the landscape or urban cityscapes; the figure in the landscape or interior exterior artwork that features spaces with landscapes as well as abstract landscapes. The work may be plein air paintings or straight from the studio, or simply imaginary inspirations that show landscapes from the visual experience of the artist.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists.

MEDIA: Acceptable media include painting, drawing, printmaking, photography and mixed media.

JUROR: Thomas Legaspi currently teaches Art History and studio courses in Drawing and Painting at St. John’s University in Manhattan. His primary focus is realism, landscapes and the figure. Thomas is also published by Oxford University on his treaties on Art and Culture in the West. His artwork has been exhibited in New York City, nationally and internationally at the State National Museum of Kazakhstan, and in private and corporate collections. Thomas lives and works in New York City where he has his private art studio.

CALL for ENTRIES: Venice Biennale

I absolutely love heirloom vegetables. I love the idea of preserving the genetic “bloodline,” if you will, of a fruit or vegetable easily distinguished from the genetically modified, hot-house varieties we are all used to eating. However, I can admit that sometimes a tomato is just a tomato. This next call recognizes that sometimes art is just art. They don’t want your CV, resume, statment or anything else–just your art.

SALES: The Gallery is authorized to sell artwork on behalf of the Artist during the exhibition period. Title to each artwork will remain with the Artist until the Gallery sells the Work. The Gallery will sell the Work, as agent for the Artist, at the agreed Selling Price as specified in the consignment note. Today, I am going to give you a time-tested Southern recipe for success. Use sugar, not vinegar. It worked for Mary Poppins; it will work for you. When sending in your Calls for Entries, your submissions for the $2 Art Contest or submissions for ANY show. Be professional, but above all else… be nice. I am going to have to quit saying that I do not usually recommend online exhibits because here is another one. It is a great exhibit sponsored by a great site (albeit a competitor, of sorts). Learn more about the Art Kudos show sponsored by Artshow.com! Art Kudos is an annual international juried competition that serves to recognize and honor excellence in the visual arts. Artists who are selected as finalists benefit from world-wide exposure in a year-long online exhibition and have the opportunity to win cash awards for their exemplary work.

ELIGIBILITY: The competition is open to artists anywhere in the world, 18 years of age or older. Publishers, galleries, agents, and collectors may not submit artwork on behalf of artists.

MEDIA: Drawings, paintings, printmaking, photography, digital art, sculpture, installations, wood, glass, ceramics, fiber art and mixed media are eligible. JUROR: Holly Koons McCullough is the Director of Collections and Exhibitions at the Telfair Museum of Art in Savannah, Georgia. She began her career at the Telfair in 1996, serving as the museum’s Curator of Education before assuming leadership of the curatorial department.

McCullough spearheaded the publication of the Telfair’s first collection catalogue, and has organized exhibitions on subjects ranging from modern silverpoint drawings to contemporary Southeastern art, as well as 19th and early 20th-century American art, including the recent Dutch Utopia exhibition. She holds a B. A. in English and art history from the University of Georgia and a M.A. in art history from the University of Notre Dame.

AWARDS: Exemplary works will be displayed in a year-long online exhibition at www.artkudos.com beginning August 15th, 2011. Cash awards totaling $4,400 will be distributed as follows: Best of Show – $1,200; Second Place – $900; Third Place – $750; Founder’s Award of Distinction – $500; (3) Merit Awards – $250 each; (3) Honorable Mentions – $100 each.
