Tired of broccoli? Me too. Tired of kale? I think everyone is. What about purslane? It is a succulent herb that has a touch of a bitter overtone. It is technically a weed, but that just means it is easy to grow. If you don’t have it naturally growing in your yard, you can buy the seeds on the cheap. Try it in stir fry or salads. THEME: Green “art that focuses on color, that is, a subject enhanced, here, by the use of the color green, in particular. The extent of this application to the composition is not a consideration in the judging of each piece. How the color green engages the viewer to enter the artist’s narrative defines these evaluations—nothing more. We look forward to receiving potential entries which capture a mood, relay a message, or inspire a viewer to interpret the artist’s work through their intuitive and perhaps methodical utilization of various green shades.” — art-competition.net

I am addicted to cones of vanilla ice cream dipped in chocolate. More accurately, I love the chocolate dipped diary, not the cone, but I have great respect for the edible nature of this delivery system. Why don’t we have more edible packaging? I don’t know either. (BTW, no, I do NOT want to know about the probably-scary, chemical explanation for why dipping chocolate hardens. Ignorance is bliss.) This next Call is all about cones (and rods), but of the photoreceptor quality. I’ve shown work at this venue, and I can’t wait to see this show…

JUROR: Conrad Benner is a photographer, podcaster, curator, and Founder of StreetsDept.com, a photo-blog that discovers art on the streets of Philadelphia. Conrad was recently named ‘One of the 100 Most Influential People in Philadelphia’ by Philadelphia Magazine & his blog named one of the ‘Best Blogs for Travellers’ by The Guardian and his photography highlighted by Mashable and Instagram. Established in January of 2011, Conrad’s primary focus with Streets Dept is to document and celebrate street art and graffiti. “In general, I believe deeply that the public space has a profound effect on us as individuals and on our city as a whole, and my aim with Streets Dept is to explore how we build and use public spaces creatively.”

Four days out of seven find my family eating spicy foods. Before I quit smoking five years ago, I suspected my tolerance for spicy food came from my deadened taste buds. He has received numerous honors including a fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts. McElhinney is also a published author who has conducted numerous oral history interviews for the Smithsonian Archives of American Art, Coleccion Patricia Phelps de Cisneros, the Frick Center for the History of Collecting, Robert Rauschenberg Foundation, other foundations & private individuals.

MEDIA: Open to all* media that can be represented as a digital image / photograph. The elevator doors measure 36” wide x 80” high, which translates into a 1:2.2 ratio. (Portrait orientation.) Images that are more than half as wide as they are high may be cropped to fit the available space.

THEME: Three images will be selected, one for each elevator door in the Cultural Center’s Education Wing. The images, provided as high resolution digital files, will be reproduced on material to be affixed to the elevator doors for one year.

I can’t imagine how many times I have written the words “I love goat cheese”. It is easy for me to for to write these posts and reveal my food soul and forget that people READ these posts. But when I give career development seminars, I have readers that show up (thank you) and have conversations with me about food that remind me that people know way too much about what I eat, ha. Recently at a seminar about branding yourself as an artist, I had someone bring me goat’s milk soap since they couldn’t keep goat’s milk cheese cold. ♥ This next Call doesn’t have a lot of requirements, but one of them is that your design must include a goat. No, I’m not kidding.
