CALL for SUBMISSIONS: Bucktown Arts Fest

Learn more about the Bucktown Arts Fest Annual Poster contest!

say CHEESE

I can’t imagine how many times I have written the words “I love goat cheese”.  It is easy for me to for to write these posts and reveal my food soul and forget that people READ these posts.  But when I give career development seminars, I have readers that show up (thank you) and have conversations with me about food that remind me that people know way too much about what I eat, ha.  Recently at a seminar about branding yourself as an artist, I had someone bring me goat’s milk soap since they couldn’t keep goat’s milk cheese cold. ♥  This next Call doesn’t have a lot of requirements, but one of them is that your design must include a goat.  No, I’m not kidding.

Check out this Call for Submissions from Bucktown Arts Fest (Chicago, IL) for Annual Poster Contest.  This is a great resume builder for the winner. Take a look…

Food as medicine has been on my radar for a decade.  I appreciate the ability to attempt home remedies through food and supplements.  I am not suggesting it is easier, nor am I suggestion it is a solution for all ailments.  But, I am intrigued.  A family history of arthritis, combined with years of a slight addiction to towering high heels, has resulted in massive joint pain in one of feet.  Flair ups are completely manageable with a combination of tart cherries & massive quantities of vitamin C.  Drug-resistant pediatric epilepsy is now often treated by mainstream medicine with a ketogenic diet.  The collaboration between doctors and nutritionists is inspiring. This Call offers you the opportunity to collaborate with writers.  Take a look…

ARTIST of the DAY: Don Bergland

utopian DISTOPIA

This site does not debate political issues –except those that surround food.  But let’s speak generally.  The current political circus in the U.S. and abroad seems unreal to me.  I read quotes & sound bites everyday that indicate paint pervasively dark image of humanity.   Today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Don Bergland stages glimpses of the surreal world –both utopian & dystopian– only previously imagined.  If feel like the perfect fit today. "Fallow Atonement" by AAAD Artist of the Day Don Bergland!
“Fallow Atonement” by AAAD Artist of the Day Don Bergland

“I like to challenge accepted cultural dogma and ideology.  Each of my works features a theatrical set defined by a stage with actors, props, and a backdrop.  The actors in the set consist of everyday objects brought into combinations and interactions that attempt to elicit inquiry.  The content of the artwork focuses on themes such as time, aging, nostalgia, the footless pursuit of Utopia, and the conditions of ideology which disable our rational minds. Each image is constructed using conventions of visual realism, but with alterations that offer dreamlike possibilities. Themes and objects appear and re-appear. Each work becomes a framed snapshot of a moment in theatrical space, noticed briefly, and then forgotten once more, a fraction of time when reality is breached and a frozen glimpse into the mental theatre of Eternity is experienced, an opening when the viewer can catch the faint hint of cotton candy breezing in from the sideshow midway, the pastel moment of a lost memory, a slight reminder that the past is never absent, and that the future is always in front of us.” —Don Bergland

ARTIST of the DAY: Liz Huston

creative ISOLATION

As the new year approaches, I find myself more isolated and in my head as I set goals for the year and contemplate creative direction. Today’s Artist of the Day, Liz Huston captured my inner dialogue with storytellers of her very own.  The pieces below that spoke to me are from a couple of years ago.  But please take the opportunity to look at her new work and find your own story. (continues below)

The Dreamkeepers (left) & Creative Isolation and the Map of Authenticity (right) by Liz Huston!

“I am fascinated with the way memory influences how stories change and evolve over time.  This happens not because the facts change, but because the inner orientation of the storyteller has. Their perspective grows; expanding and contracting with experience. The storyteller journeys us deep into the timeless aspects of the human experience; the kingdoms of love and loss, through grief, resolve, growth and into the balance of purpose… This time traveler, this storyteller, unites the treads of time–leading us home, bringing us back into ourselves.” Liz Huston

NUTRITION

MREs now have a strong secondary market–doomsday preppers.  I don’t think that most people relish the idea of eating pre-packaged, processed military rations.  They have improved great (or so I’ve been told); pizza is even on the horizon.  However, I would think that preserving seeds, building hydroponic systems and farming fish would be better long-term solutions than MREs.  But then again, I’m not a doomsday prepper–so, what do I know?  This next Call wants your view on militarism, but I don’t think they are interested in the food options.  Take a look…

Menu planning is great in theory. I do it most weeks only to end up picking out dinner much like throwing a dart at a dart board. I open the frig, find a miscellaneous ingredient like fava beans and base an entire meal on it. It is part laziness and part indecisiveness. My taste buds often object to my meal planning. Hmph. What’s a girl to do? I don’t know either. This next Call involves a dARTboard of its own. Take a look…
