CALL for ENTRIES: Human Relationship to Water

Learn more about the Human Relationship to Water exhibit from LA Photo Curator!drip drip DRIP

Do you take water for granted?  Despite the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and the ongoing reality of Flint, Michigan, and the horror of #NoDAPL protest conditions, among a hundred other examples, I am guilty of taking for granted that when I turn the handle, the water will be clean and abundant.  Until the wildfires.  It only took a week of boil conditions to make me realize how precious water is.  While we were under boil orders, I second guessed every utensil, every plate.  Did this get washed with boiled water?  Will this spoon make me sick?  Every meal. Every snack. Every day.  How would living without clean water affect your life?  I’m not the only one asking.  Take a look at this next Call questioning your relationship to water.  Take a look…

“. . .man’s relationship with water has become estranged. As ports closed and moved outside of the city, as planes and cars took over the role of the seas, and as the individual came to expect their cargo at their doorstep, so too did human interconnectivity lose its relationship to water and the natural elements.” –from Adriaan Van Der Plas via laphotocurator.com

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists

MEDIA: Photography

DEADLINE: April 5, 2017 (Midnight PST)

NOTIFICATION: (and opening date) April 25, 2017

ENTRY FEE: $20 for up to 3. 15% of artist fees go to 2 charities per competition. 7.5% to the curator’s choice of charity and 7.5% to the first place winner’s chosen charity.  Adriaan Van Der Plas has chosen the charity Clean Water Action.

CURATOR: Founder Adriaan Van Der Plas was once himself an outsider, having left his hometown of Vienna, Austria in 1973 to immigrate to New York City. Around this time, artist Konstantin Bokov was preparing to make the same transition. Inspired by the works of Van Gogh and unable to show his art in the political climate of the USSR, he decided to leave the Ukraine for New York city. The two became acquainted in 1993, when Bokov approached Adriaan at his former art pushcart concept in the South Street Seaport district, “Art a la carte”.

Adriaan became an avid collector of his work, recognizing the sincerity by which the work was able to portray New York’s spirit and materiality. With the opening of the Van Der Plas gallery on 156 Orchard Street, Adriaan made it the gallerys mission to bring contemporary outsiders  into the public eye.

SALES: All sales are conducted between the artist & buyer.  There is no commission.

Sleep is not my friend.  As a lifelong insomniac, and I have tried EVERY remedy –prescription, herbal, oils, sounds, aroma.  Lack of sleep promotes depression. For me, depression often takes the form of extended weeks or months of “the blues” marked by an remarkable lethargy and a sort of emotional paralysis.  It is more common in winter, so I am actively combating insomnia every February.  This year, I am having moderate success by not snacking late at night (my apologies to the massive hit sustained by the popcorn industry) & getting half an hour of moderate exercise each morning.  Creativity is the ultimate therapy & this next Call is a great chance to work out some pent up “blues”.  Investigate….

entirely DRINKABLE

I lived in the USVI for a couple of years, and my house used only cistern water.   Rainfall kept the supply flowing for most of the year, but a couple of months prior to the rainy season we’d have to pay to have the cistern fill… about $500.  That was 20 years ago.  I try to internalize this memory every time I pay my $85 water bill.  Well, that and I can actually cook with the tap water at my current home.  Back then the hashtag would have been #dontlookinthebottomofcistern or #youdontwanttoknow.  This next call is all about the water, and there are no restriction on the orgin of YOUR water.  Investigate…

soup to BEANS

It is all a matter of taste, right?  I know that for every food there is someone who believes its tastes better than all other foods, but I still can’t quite resolve myself to the notion that some foods aren’t just objectively bad.  Warhol is famous for, among other things, depictions of a soup.  That same soup is the foundation for thousands of green bean casserole recipes.  SOMEone believes it to be “Mmm mmm good”, but I am not one of the some.  I don’t have a lot of food limits, aside from Century eggs and boiled okra, but just no.  It is a black and white issue for me –just like this next Call.  Investigate this opportunity…

I’ve become a casual fan of Naked & Afraid (the TV show).  When flipping through the channels, I keep tripping across the reruns.  For those of you non-watchers.  Two people (1 man, 1 woman) that have never met who are dropped in a remote location for 21 days with nothing–not even clothes. I am fat obsessed–not with the fat ON me but with the fat IN my food.  In October of 2013, I threw away my weight scales.  I’m done.  My familial relationship with diabetes and my allergy to wheat has forced a reduction of many of the starchy treats I have always loved.  But, beautiful, luscious fats like butter and coconut oil have increased to help ease the transition.  As a result, MY figure is changing–from the texture and tone of my skin to slow but steady reduction of my double chin. Being hungry is my nightmare.  Some people are afraid of snakes or the dark or being a victim of a crime.  I fear hunger.  To my knowledge, there is no deep-seated hunger issues in my childhood.  I just scares me.  Hunger isn’t just prevalent in rural areas or third-world nations.  People are hungry every where, every day, from the country to far more urban areas.  I’d like to see a little more attention-getting street artists focus their work on the people in the shadow of their work that are hungry.  This next show is an opportunity…
