CALL for ENTRIES: Sugarloaf

PLAN AHEAD

My family is on a savings spree. We sat down the first week of the year and decided on goals for the year. Many of those goals require cash. Cash necessitates saving. Saving, in my house, means cutting the food budget. Grocery shopping is now preceeded by a menu and detailed grocery list and eating out has been cut to one sit-down meal and one fast-food meal a week. This next Call gives you an opportunity to plan ahead.

This Call for Entries is for the 13 Sugarloaf Fine Art & Crafts festivals. I don’t publish many festival calls, but Sugarloaf is among the country’s finest. Take a look, and find a festival for you…or enter them all.

CALL for ENTRIES: Sugarloaf Festivals

Sugarloaf Crafts Festival, one of the nation’s most popular and most recognized juried shows of contemporary crafts and fine art, is now accepting applications from artists for its 2011 shows.

MEDIA: Artists may apply for the 2011 shows in categories including ceramics and pottery, fiber and fashion, fine art, furniture, blown and leaded glass, leather, metalsmithing, photography and functional and decorative wood crafts. Sugarloaf is no longer accepting applications for jewelry artists for Spring 2011 shows. Jewelry remains open for Fall 2011.

ABOUT SUGARLOAF: Sugarloaf enters its 36th year among the most respected shows in the country. In 2010, nine of Sugarloaf’s 13 shows were ranked in the Top 200 nationally by Sunshine Artist magazine.

This past fall, attendance at the seven Sugarloaf shows increased by12%, and artists’ sales increased over 8%, totaling $9.7 million. Artists whose work is exhibited at Sugarloaf shows are jury-selected and are represented in the nation’s finest galleries, private collections, and museums.

APPLICATION PROCESS: Artists interested in exhibiting at Sugarloaf Craft Festivals candownload applications from www.sugarloafcrafts.com. Applications must include slides representing artists’ work and their display space. Artists who wish to apply online can complete their application and submit digital images via www.zapplication.org, using the search term “Sugarloaf.” Potential exhibitors may also request printed applications and additional information by calling (800) 210-9900.

CALL for ENTRIES: Outlandish

EARTHY REWARDS

I love earthy foods. Give me grassy asparagus and a loamy merlot, and I’m a happy girl. However, just because something is earthy or natural doesn’t mean I want to eat it. I will pass on the lemongrass and tofu, but you can toss a little wheat germ in my pancakes, though. This Call will give you a chance to get up close and personal with nature…from the mundane to the outlandish.

Check out this Call for Entries from the Bedford Gallery in Walnut Creek, California for Outlandish: Contemporary Depictions of Nature. You can enter by this California show by snail mail, or you can submit your entries online. You have plenty of time, but please don’t procrastinate… Get back to nature.

Outlandish: Contemporary Depictions of Nature

Bedford Gallery exhibits the work of historic, modern, and contemporary artists. The Gallery is dedicated to providing the public with opportunities to learn about visual arts through public programs that are varied, accessible, challenging, and educational. Its mission is to provide exhibitions and other programs that both reflect and engage the diverse audiences of the entire Contra Costa region.

This national juried exhibition will look at landscape from all vantage points and all media, including painting, sculpture, photography, video, and mixed media. From the micro to the macro, artists can explore a tiny speck of a garden to a global view.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists in the United States, 18 years of age or older. Entries must be original work completed within the last three years.

MEDIA:
All media will be considered.

There are no size limitations for entries. Please include specific dimensions, exact weight (3D), and applicable installation instructions with your images for review by the juror. Bedford Gallery reserves the right not to accept exceptionally large or cumbersome pieces.

DEADLINE:
May 18, 2011

NOTIFICATION: Artists will be notified of the results by email by May 27, 2011. Please do not call the gallery.

ENTRY FEE: A non-refundable fee of $35 is required. This fee covers up to 3 entries. Please make checks payable to City of Walnut Creek.

AWARDS: $2,000 in cash, plus prize awards to be selected by juror.

SALES: Artists are encouraged to sell their work. Artists receive 60% of the sale price for work that is sold. In the past, public interest in available work has been high and the Gallery believes such artist collector dialogue is a vibrant part of exhibitions. All work must have a declared value for insurance purposes, even if it is not for sale.

CALL for ENTRIES: International Juried Show

CARRYING A TORCH

As I have mentioned on so many occasions, I love kitchen gadgets. I love everything from 1940s egg scales to the idea of a torch for carmelizing creme brulee. However, I have to admit that lately my watching too many cooking shows has me itching to use liquid nitrogen in some way or the other…I hear it is the best way to get the smoothest ice cream. This next Call is an opportunity for you to show off your technology skills.

International Juried Show

Enter the 2011 juried competition for digital art and photography brought to you by the Los Angeles Center for Digital Art (LACDA).

ELIGIBILITY: The competition is international, open to all geographical locations.

MEDIA: All styles of artwork and photography where digital processes of any kind were integral to the creation of the images are acceptable.

DEADLINE: February 15, 2011

NOTIFICATION: February 21, 2011

ENTRY FEE: Registration fee is $30 US for up to three images. Multiple entries permitted, additional $30 entry fee for each three images.

SUBMISSIONS: All entries must be made online.

AWARDS: The first prize winner receives 10 prints up to 44 x 60 inches on canvas or museum quality paper (approximately a $2,500-$3,000 value) to be shown in a solo exhibition in our main gallery from March 10-April 2, 2011. The show will be widely promoted and will include a reception for the artist.

Second place prizes: Ten second place winners will receive one print of their work up to 24 x 36 inches ($150-$200 in value) to be included in upcoming group exhibits. The ten second place winners will be scheduled into a group shows within twelve months of announcement of winners. Consideration is given to placing these works in shows appropriate to their style, genre and/or content. These shows will be widely promoted and will include a reception for the artists.

Special consideration will be given to all entrants for inclusion in future shows at LACDA. Many entrants from past competitions have already been included in their exhibits.

JURORS: Edward Robinson is the Associate Curator of the Wallis Annenberg Photography Department at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA). He curated the Los Angeles presentation of New Topographics: Photographs of a Man-Altered Landscape, co-curated The Sum of Myself: Photographic Self-Portraits from the Audrey and Sydney Collection, and curated the recent exhibition William Eggleston: Democratic Camera (Fall, 2010).

He contributes regularly to LACMA’s blog, Unframed, including a recent series of video interviews with LA-based photographers. He earned his PhD at Oxford University in the History of Art and Photography and his BA in Art History at Brown University. Formerly the Beaumont and Newhall Curatorial Fellow in the Dept. of Photography at MoMA, he initiated and organized over four years a number of exhibitions and programs. He has served as well as the editor of Blind Spot magazine, has published a number of articles on photographic history, and has taught at New York University and Yale University.

Rex Bruce is the founder and director of Los Angeles Center for Digital Art. He founded the digital program at Artists Television Access (San Francisco) for which he curated exhibits and created curriculum. He received his masters from SFSU in Interdisciplinary Art where he also taught and developed curriculum for many years. His work has been shown internationally for over twenty years.

Most recently he has emerged as a significant artist and organizer in the burgeoning Renaissance in downtown Los Angeles as well as becoming a leader in the exploding international scene revolving around art and technology.

REASON TO CELEBRATE!

I have made hundreds of grilled cheese sandwiches. I have entered hundreds of art shows. I have made hundreds of canapes and attended hundreds of opening night receptions. I believe that the 100 mark is to be celebrated. This blog will soon celebrate its 300th post. This next Call for Entries should put you in the mood to celebrate.

Check out this Call for Entries from the Connecticut Acadamy of Fine Arts and the Mystic Arts Center for their 100th Exhibition. There are lots of awards so don’t miss this opportunity!

CALL for ENTRIES:
100th Exhibition

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists. One or two works may be submitted. Work must not have been previously shown at the CAFA or the Mystic Arts Center. If you are not in the United States: They do not currently have capability for converting currency or receiving international shipments. But, if you have a contact within the US, you can work through them.

MEDIA: All fine arts media: painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, graphics.

DEADLINE: March 25, 2011 is the mail in deadline. May 22 and 23, 2011 is the hand-delivery deadline. Artists may enter up to two works. Entries will be received Sunday, May 22 and Monday, May 23, 11AM–5PM at the Mystic Arts Center Inc., 9 Water St. Mystic, CT 06355.

JURORS: Joy M. Pepe is Professor Emerita of Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts, where she developed the Art History curriculum, implemented an Art History Minor, and was chair of the Liberal Arts Department. She serves often as a juror, throughout Connecticut, for competitions, and exhibitions, and she gives popular lecture series on many art history topics.

Last year Pepe held the position of Professional in Residence in Art History at the University of New Haven, and this year she is teaching various Art History courses at the University of Hartford, Southern Connecticut State University, and Albertus Magnus College. She holds a Masters from Wesleyn University with a concentration in Art History, and she has done doctoral studies (ABD) at Rutgers University in New Jersey.

Anne von Stuelpnagel is Director of Exhibitions at the Bruce Museum in Greenwich, Connecticut; Since 1995 she has been responsible for the design of the 12-14 exhibitions per year of the Museum; Having worked at the Bruce Museum since 1980, her responsibilities included art, history, anthropology, and science. She received her BFA from Blocherer School of Fine Art and Applied Sciences, in Munich, Germany with a Major in painting and a Minor in Interior Design. Anne initiated and has carried out, for many years, the Outdoor Art Show of the Bruce Museum. After settling in the United States, in 1977, she studied printmaking and has since worked primarily as a printmaker.

SUSHI ME!

When you think of North Carolina, what food comes to mind? I instantly think vinegar-based barbeque; however, this blog has been awash with pit-smoked references lately. So, I turned to my friend Michelle, a fellow blogger and Foreign Service officer for a little help. She is getting her doctorate from UNC. She says the best sushi place ever is a little place called Akai Hana and just happens to be outside of Chapel Hill in Carrboro, NC. This next Call might end in a great sushi dinner if you play your cards right.

Juried Exhibitions Series

The Chapel Hill Public Arts Office invites artists to apply for the 2011 – 2012 Juried Exhibitions Series. Original two- and three-dimensional artwork by selected artists will be displayed in Chapel Hill Town Hall and possibly other Town cultural facilities beginning May 2011.

Selected artists will be invited to exhibit their work in small group shows of two or three artists for two-month exhibition periods. The Juried Exhibitions Series is promoted in the local media and through Public Arts Office announcements and press releases. Selected artists will be asked to provide specific information and deliver their work for installation at agreed upon times. Public Arts staff and contractors install the work for exhibition.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists creating original artwork that can be hung indoors or displayed in glass cases.

There is no fee to enter.

SALES: If the artwork is for sale, the Public Arts Office requires a commission of 15% on any work sold to help defray the cost of this public arts program.

Each portfolio must include: Ten (10) Images of Relevant Work – Each image must be a PC-compatible JPEG file at 72 pixels per inch, as close to but no larger than either of the following dimensions: 750 pixels wide by 560 pixels tall. Each JPEG file must be named in the following format – lastname_01_title.jpg – where the artist’s last name is followed by underscore, two-digit identification number, underscore, title, file extension. If you wish to show a detail, include it within the required number of images. Please do not present your work as a montage of images (ie, in a PowerPoint file); each image must be a separate JPEG. Images submitted should be representative of the type of work proposed for exhibition.

Annotated Image List – A word file (.doc or .docx) listing JPEG images by two-digit identification number, followed by artist, title of work depicted, media, and dimensions (width by length in inches).

Resume – A word file (.doc or .docx) providing resume, no longer than two pages.

JURY PROCESS: An Artist Selection Committee comprising representatives of Chapel Hill Town Hall, the Chapel Hill Public Arts Commission, the Public Arts Office, and local artists will review all complete portfolios and select artists to participate in the 2011 – 2012 Juried Exhibitions Series. Selections are based on artistic excellence and the goal of exhibiting a variety of media. Public Arts staff will notify artists of the Selection Committee results and will make exhibition arrangements with selected artists.

I don’t understand hate. There is no food reference today because I cannot find a way to incorporate humor into this issue.

CALL for ENTRIES: It Gets Better/Make It Better

Social change starts with the individual. One gay teenager jumps off a bridge and thousands are motivated to share their coming-out stories.

One person can also serve as a positive symbol to effect social change. A woman keeps her seat on the bus and a social revolution is born.

By working to better the world, you actually make things better for yourself. Studies of collective action have shown that when people identify with a particular cause, and work towards social change, the change often occurs within—people feel legitimized. Empowerment is not necessarily even reliant on the movement’s success: victory occurs in the very struggle of self-expression and self-empowerment.

Entries for It Gets Better/Make It Better should explore this theme of how the individual exists within and can affect the community. One is many.

ELIGIBILTIY: Artists 18 yrs old or older from all of the United States, figurative or abstract two-dimensional art.

CALL for ENTRIES: 28th Annual Juried Open

When is the last time you went to a cooking demonstration? I love the sort of public bravado that comes with a demonstration meant to sell pots ‘n’ pans or cutlery. And infomercials are just the best. If I didn’t have a day job, I would be broke from all the gadgets I could buy like sandwich makers, dehydrators, juicers, blenders, choppers and baking pans. I am in love with the NyFork (left). This next Call gives you a public outlet to display your work with the need for fancy knife skills or clever alliteration.

Check out this Call for Entries from the Visual Arts Alliance for the 28th Annual Juried Open Exhibition which will claim the Continental Building in Houston, TX as its home for this year. By the way, VAA takes NO COMMISSION. Don’t miss this chance to break into a really cool art market in Texas…

ELIGIBILITY: Artwork can be created with any 2D or 3D media with the exception of film or video. All works must be completed within the previous 3 years, without supervision and not previously shown in any VAA juried competition. The viewing environment is a public business lobby; therefore, subject matter such as erotica, violence and religious reference cannot be accepted.

DEADLINE: Saturday, February 26, 2011 – Postmark deadline for entries

NOTIFICATION: Thursday, March 17, 2011

ENTRY FEE: The entry fee for 1 to 3 works is $35; one entry per artist. A diptych or triptych is considered a single work.

SUBMISSIONS: Work must be submitted on a CD in JPG format. File resolution should be 72 dpi or greater, and no larger than 5MB. Cleary label outside of CD case and the CD with artist name, entry number and title. CD’s will become property of VAA and will NOT be returned. Artist will be notified by phone if selected by the juror.

SALES: All sales are handled between the artist and the buyer and NO commission will be collected by VAA. Please mark NFS if work is not for sale.

AWARDS: In excess of $2,500.00 in cash and merchandise awards. (Only one per person)

JUROR: Brian Portman is a Houston based artist. He received a BFA at Rhode Island School of Design where he was European Honors Fellow. His work is exhibited locally, nationally and internationally. Brian has been on the faculty at The Glassell School of Art, Museum of Fine Arts Houston since 1999. He also has given seminars for the Museum of Fine Arts Houston Education Department. Other awards and fellowships include the Anna Giles Kimber Travel Grant from the Dallas Museum of Art, NEA, and the Core Program 1983-85 at The Glassell School of Art. His collections are included in The Museum of Fine Arts Houston, Dallas Museum of Art, Walker Art Center and Museo Culterdad, Mexico City. He was juror for Art on the Avenue (2003) and juror with Arielle Masson and Sandy Zilker (2004). Brian was featured in Catherine D. Anspon’s book “Texas Art Today” in 2010. He is represented by Meredith Long & Co., Houston, Tx.

BEET YOU!

I love root vegetables. Carrots and turnips are yummy, but I simply have never developed a taste for beets. I don’t hate beets. I just don’t eat them. But I must admit I’ve been tempted. My mother grew up in the hills of Tennessee, and when she was little, her mother used to boil beets in a kettle over an open fire outside in the yard.

The little devils that they were, my mother and her siblings used to grab them by the greens out of the pot and squeeeeeeeze. Apparently they shoot out like little red rockets out of their skins. Beet rockets, funny. Get to the source of your imagination with this Call.

South Shore Art Center invites entries that offer distinctive, imaginative
imagery, across all media. This juried exhibition asks artists to look back into their past life experiences to find ‘roots of inspiration’ that manifest themselves in current artworks.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists and all media. No geographical restrictions. Work must have be recent and not previously shown at South Shore Art Center. All work must be for sale.

DEADLINE: Entry forms and images must be received by March 7, 2011.

NOTIFICATION: Accepted entries posted on SSAC website by March 16, 2011.

ENTRY FEE: $25 for up to 3 entries, $35 for 4, $45 for 5

SALES: South Shore Art Center receives 40% of the puchase price. No accepted entry may be withdrawn prior to the close of the exhibition. No pricing changes will be allowed after acceptance.

JUROR: The juror for this show is Howard Yezerski. Howard Yezerski Gallery is one of the leading contempoary galleries in Boston located at 460 Harrison Ave, Boston, Massachusetts.

CALL for ENTRIES: About Face

FISHY FACE

I have more than one friend that won’t eat food with a face… which should make her a vegetarian on moral grounds, right? Well, while out to lunch with one of them many years ago, my friend ordered fish. I promptly reminded her that she didn’t eat food with faces and that fish definitely have faces. She looked at me as seriously as possible and said, “I’ve looked into a fish’s eyes. They have no story to tell. There’s nothing going on up there. Bring on the tuna.” This next Call will require that your face tell a story.

Check out this Call for Entries from the Annmarie Sculpture Garden (an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institute) for About Face. The entry fee is only $20 for up to four pieces, and this is an excellent opportunity to put your best face forward. Take a look!

CALL for ENTRIES: About Face

About Face explores the artist as storyteller. How does an artist develop and arrange the elements of a good story—character, setting, plot, conflict, climax, and resolution—through the format of a portrait? Though we all have a story to tell, what is gained or lost when we are rendered through an artist’s point of view? Do the completed works represent the person we are, the person we strive to be, or the character the artist sees? How do traditional and new media types affect the impact of a portrait? To this end, the jury seeks portraits that tell a compelling story in a visually interesting way.

About Face will be installed in the spacious Mezzanine Gallery of Annmarie Sculpture Garden’s Arts Building. With over 3300 sq ft of exhibition space, moveable walls, high ceilings, tile floors, an Arakawa hanging system, Internet access, and electricity, the Mezzanine Gallery can accommodate all sizes and types of installations. A few outdoor works will also be considered for inclusion in About Face.

ELIGIBILITY: All media types are welcome. The exhibition is open to all artists age 18 and older working in the U.S. Video entries must be submitted on DVD, playable on QuickTime or RealPlayer, and no more than 30 minutes in length.
DVD or computer based works must be exhibited on equipment provided by artist. Internet access is available. Bases and pedestals must well-balanced and sturdy. Annmarie has a limited number of bases available, please inquire. All frames must be black or silver and simple in design. All works that will be hung on the wall must have brackets that work with the Arakawa hanging system. More information on this system will be provided upon acceptance.

DEADLINE: March 1, 2011 is the deadline for your application.

NOTIFICATION: Artists will be notified of final acceptance status via email by March 7, 2011.

ENTRY FEE: Artists must submit a $20 non-refundable entry fee for up to four entries. Entry fee must be paid by check, money order, or credit card. Each entry must be submitted with three images of the artwork, including one overall view of the artwork, one detail shot, and one installation shot.

ABOUT the ANNMARIE SCULPTURE GARDEN: An affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution, Annmarie is a thirty-acre public sculpture garden and arts center located in scenic Solomons, Maryland, on the Chesapeake Bay. The sculpture garden features a walking path which meanders through the forest, past permanent and loaned sculpture, including more than thirty works on loan from the Smithsonian Institution and the National Gallery of Art. The garden also presents a variety of special events, gallery shows, and engaging public art programs. The new Studio School offers creative classes taught by a talented faculty. I AM A TOMATO HUGGER

I never used to be an activist for the environment. I’m not against all things eco-friendly, I’ve just been too lazy over the years. However, when I moved to the Great Smoky Mountains, that all changed. Nature is in my face here, and I can’t help but be concerned about my effect on the very nature that made me want to live here. So, I buy produce locally–the apple and tomatoes are phenomenal, and I try to reduce, reuse and/or recycle a little bit every day because some things ought not be disturbed. This Call for Entries will help you do a little something to help as well.

CALL for ENTRIES:
Nature, Undisturbed™

Nature Undisturbed™ is a celebration of the natural world. The show brings together a diverse collection of photography showcasing the wonders of nature that many don’t take the time to see. It is the hope of the show creators that after viewing the photography, you are inspired to get out on the not-so-beaten path. Perhaps you happen to take along a camera to capture the light through the leaves and continue to enjoy that day each time you view the photo.

This is the show that brings the outside in for all to enjoy.

The exhibition will showcase the simple, yet majestic, beauty of nature, wildlife, and our local landscapes. Each unique image echos the sentiment “a picture is worth a thousand words”; a powerful reinforcement for the importance of greenspace and natural habitat protection for future generations of people and wildlife.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artist photographers 18 and over, amateur or professional.

MEDIA: Photography – Black and white, sepia, color, and manipulated images may be entered in any category. Photos that are submitted cannot not been accepted to any other juried photography show in the year prior to Nature, Undisturbed 2011.

CATEGORIES: Open Category -includes all nature photography at any location (landscapes, animals, etc) & Site Specific Category – includes photos taken at the Flint River and the Trust properties including Line Creek Nature Area, Flat Creek Nature Area in Peachtree City and Sam’s Lake Bird Sanctuary in Fayette County (GA).

DEADLINE: January 31, 2011

NOTIFICATION: No later than the first week of March, 2011.

ENTRY FEE: Photographers may enter up to 4 images per category. There is a $25 entry fee for one category or $45 if entering both categories. Make checks payable to Dogwood Gallery and Framer.

HOW TO ENTER: All photos entered must be in a CD. The files must be JPEG, no larger than 2MB in size. The longest side may be no larger than 1024 pixels. Files should be named as follows: Category -Photographer Name – Title. Mail all entries to: Donna Rosser, 105 Whitehall Place, Fayetteville, GA 30215.

SALES: All exhibitors may sell their work. The artist will receive 50% of the sales price. A portion of proceeds from the show will go to Flint Riverkeeper and Southern Conservation Trust.

JUROR: Susan Todd-Raque provides art advisory services for private collectors, corporations and artists.

Specializing in vintage 20th century photography and work by selected contemporary photographers, Susan Todd-Raque brings a wealth of knowledge from over twenty years as an independent art collection consultant, curator, educator, appraiser and writer on the photographic arts, earning the respect of private and corporate collectors in Atlanta, Chicago and New York.

During her graduate work at Emory University, Todd-Raque learned the fine skill of appraising photography, the true meaning of vintage, and the value of art as an investment. Noted for her dynamic presentation style, she has been a guest lecturer on various aspects of collecting art for the Michael C. Carlos Museum and galerieMC, with the most recent lecture, Inspired Collecting, at the High Museum of Art.

As a founder of Atlanta Celebrates Photography, Todd-Raque created a forum and showcase for photography through an annual lecture series, public art initiative, and numerous activities, thus advancing the position of the photographic arts in the Southeast. Her community service also includes serving on the Board of Directors of Art Papers magazine and the Photo Forum support group at the High Museum of Art.
