But a lack of time is also my excuse for splurging at the antipasti bar in my local grocery store. It is a double standard, but who uses TOO MUCH time as an excuse for anything? This next Call doesn’t have a lot of time left, but they’ll take all the time you have. You’ll see what I mean…

“This exhibition investigates our relationship to the concept of time, the choices we make and the random, uncontrollable events that shape our lives. From the moment we begin our journey into the cacophony of the world – a series of decisions, choices and twists of fate guide us – often lurching or blissful and occasionally tragic. What have we chosen for ourselves? When has our hand been forced? Have random or serendipitous events changed our course? Have we triumphed? What have we lost? What have we remembered and forgotten?

“Time is a recurring thematic in artists’ works – witness the public response and fascination with Christian Marclay’s 24-hour montage The Clock. Exploring that inexorable passage via divergent points-of-view, media and imagery demands introspection and perspective. This exhibition will investigate what binds or propels us, notions of conscious or unconscious experiences and the narratives we collect as we negotiate our lives.” –William Moreno, Juror

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists

MEDIA: All media and new media will be considered. Artwork, performance, or installations with special instructions or equipment must be described in full and possibly installed by the artist. Special hardware requirements must be included with the accepted entries.

ENTRY FEE: $38 for up to 3 images

JUROR: William Moreno is a curator, writer and director of William Moreno Contemporary which mounts periodic exhibitions. He was most recently the Associate Director of ArtPadSF, a hotel-based art fair. William was the founding Executive Director of the Claremont Museum of Art and the director of The Mexican Museum, San Francisco.

He has been a featured panelist addressing topics ranging from the contemporary role of museums and the international art landscape at San Francisco’s Commonwealth Club, the American Institute of Architecture, Latino Art Now Conference, William Turner Gallery, ArtPadSF, Flagstop and others. He has appeared on KCET’s series California’s Gold as well as other media. William serves as board President of LACE (Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions) and on the Advisory Board for the California Association of Museums.

SALES: All work will be considered for sale unless otherwise indicated on the entry form. Proceeds from work sold: 60% to the artist, 40% to OCCCA. Checks to the artists are processed within 10 days of the close of the show.

While watching a TV show about how salami is made, my son announced that eating the organs of an animal is wrong. However, when I explained all the things that his new belief would eliminate from his menu, he then asked, “Do they at least WASH the intestines first?” Hehehe. These days I prefer my animal organs in the form of chicken pate, but I will have to start keeping the ingredient list to myself, apparently. This next Call for Entries involves a different sort of heart all together. This could be an excellent opportunity…

Genetically modified food scares the crap out of me. I understand, economically speaking, why food is modified. But it doesn’t matter how much disease-resistant, mutant corn you can produce if everyone has three heads and glows in the dark. Am I suggest that genetically-modified corn causes these symptoms? No. I am suggesting that none of us know WHAT the end result could be. I’m planting heirloom varieties in my patch in the back yard this year. This Call certainly encourages you to beauty and vulnerability of the endangered and the threatened. Investigate for yourself…

Treasured

Treasured seeks to reveal the beauty and vulnerability of the endangered and the threatened. From disappearing plant and animal species, to vanishing languages, customs, and cultures, to threatened ecosystems, this exhibit will highlight the intricacies and fragility of precious and vanishing worlds.

The jury seeks artwork that examines these entities, with particular interest in pieces that highlight urgency through delicacy and severity through subtlety, as they honor the distinct beauty inherent to each.

ELIGIBILITY: The exhibition is open to artists age 18 and older working in the U.S.

MEDIA: All media types are welcome; small to large scale; indoors and outdoors.

DEADLINE:
March 31, 2012

NOTIFICATION:
Via email on or before April 16, 2012

ENTRY FEE: Artists must submit a $25 non-refundable entry fee for up to four entries. Entry fee must be paid by check, money order, or credit card. Each entry must be submitted with three images of the artwork, including one overall view of the artwork, one detail shot, and one installation shot. There is a returned check fee of $25.

JUROR: Treasured will be juried by a 1-2 member panel.

AWARDS: Annmarie will present cash awards to outstanding work. Jurors will review installed works (not application images) for award selection. If possible, selection will occur prior to the exhibit opening and awards will be presented at the opening reception. Award amounts are contingent upon sponsorship; typically there are at least three awards ranging from $250-$750 each. All award winning artists will receive an invitation for a solo or group show.

SALES: Works selected for exhibition cannot be removed before the end of the exhibition. Should a sale resulting from the exhibition occur, Annmarie will retain a 40% commission of the listed sale price.

With ten years behind them, they have grown both nostalgic for the journeys they’ve been on and full of anticipation for what lies ahead. They look for art that is a sign post providing guidance for a unique place and time on your travels.

ELIGIBILITY: The show is open to artists 18 years and older.

MEDIA: 2 and 3 dimensional art executed within two years of entry date and not previously been displayed in the library.

DEADLINE: May 31, 2012

NOTIFICATION: July 31, 2012

ENTRY FEE: Entry fee is $35. Checks payable to the Northbrook Public Library. A maximum of 3 entries per artist fee will be judged.

JURY PROCESS: Artists should be cognizant that the exhibition is open to the general public and artwork must be viewable for all ages. Pieces will be judged on artistic quality and execution as well as thematic relevance. Artists should consider the theme, “Journeys”.

SALES & COMMISSION: The NPL does NOT charge a commission for show participation. All sales inquires will be referred to the artists. Contact information, provided by the artist, will be listed in the online and printed show catalog to facilitate sales. The only sale to be handled by the NPL will be the purchase of the first-place award winner.

AWARDS: One (1) $2000 purchase prize, one (1) second place cash award of $1000, one (1) third place cash award of $500, and two (2) Viewer’s Choice cash awards of $200.

As I have mentioned on so many occasions, I love kitchen gadgets. But, with my recent move, I have realized that there are some specialized gadgets that serve no real purpose. I own a CoCoMotion. Yep, it looks a little like a blender but it is more like a margarita machine in reverse…it makes hot chocolate. And, while the value of having hot chocolate at the perfect temperature to prevent the scalding of your tongue is important. There have to be limits. International Juried Show

Enter the 2012 juried competition for digital art and photography brought to you by the Los Angeles Center for Digital Art (LACDA).

ELIGIBILITY: The competition is international, open to all geographical locations.

MEDIA: All styles of artwork and photography where digital processes of any kind were integral to the creation of the images are acceptable.

DEADLINE: March 26, 2012

NOTIFICATION: April 2, 2012

ENTRY FEE: Registration fee is $30 US for up to three images. Multiple entries permitted, additional $30 entry fee for each three images.

SUBMISSIONS: All entries must be made online.

JURORS: Nancy Meyer, LACMA, Assistant Curator of Contemporary Art, L.A. County Museum of Art and Rex Bruce, LACDA, Director and Senior Curator, L.A. Center for Digital Art.

AWARDS: The selected winner receives 10 prints up to 44×60 inches on museum quality paper (approximately a $2,500-$3,000 value) to be shown in a solo exhibition in our main gallery. The show will be widely promoted and will include a reception for the artist.

2nd Place: Ten 2nd place winners will receive one print of their work up to 24×36 inches ($150-$200 in value) to be included in upcoming group exhibits. 2nd place winners will be scheduled into a group shows within 12 months of announcement of winners. Consideration is given to placing these works in shows appropriate to their style, genre and/or content. These shows will be widely promoted and will include a reception for the artists.

Special consideration will be given to all entrants for inclusion in future shows at LACDA. Many entrants from past competitions have been included in our exhibits.

“This is a general call for new work (completed in the last two years) or proposals for new work for the second annual Games and Art exhibition featured at the 8th annual Games+Learning+Society (GLS) conference to be held in June of 2012. Narrative is an essential tool of understanding and communication of ideas. Humanities from history to politics to science are understood and disseminated through narrative tools. Characters and bildungsroman are the flesh and blood of narratives, which link us to our past and help guide our vision of the future. Narrative is a thread which represents, interprets, and shapes our world. Our narrative is often truth for lack of capital-T-Truth as we manipulate it so it may manipulate us. Perhaps most importantly, it is a double-edged sword which grants us access to experiences which may be beyond our reach–independent of space, time, and reality. This exhibition seeks to explore the power of character and narrative through games and art.”

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists.

MEDIA: Open to virtually any form from traditional practices in painting, sculpture, photography, and printmaking, to new media, performance, film, and digital video, as well as new playable games, game art, and game-like forms.

The only thing that makes me hesitate to say my veggie self portrait would be a brussel sprout is, of course, they are green and round. I strive not to be green or round. Portraits tell a story, depict a character, reveal emotion, demonstrate sensitivity and illustrate an intimate connection with your subject.

The greatest challenge and most important element in a successful portrait is an intimate connection with the subject. The ways in which you explore this connection, going beneath the surface and finding what is the essence of the portrait determines its success as a representation of your subject.

Explore different styles and methods of making revealing portraits that reflect not just the subject but you the photographer as well. Demonstrate the sensitivity necessary to move beyond literal renderings to more intimate portraits. Create images that go below the surface and penetrate deeply into a subject’s character.

JUROR: Andrea Mellard is Curator of Exhibitions and Public Programs at AMOA-Arthouse in Austin, Texas. The newly merged museum provides rich environments for a wide range of audiences to investigate and experience excellence in modern and contemporary art. The museum accomplishes this through innovative exhibitions, education, interpretative programs and direct access to the creative process. Andrea Mellard draws on an interdisciplinary background to connect visual art to contemporary culture. She has been on staff for seven years and curating for since 2009.

Recently, she curated exhibitions of photography including Clifford Ross: Outside Realism and New Art in Austin: 15 to Watch. Previously, she was a curatorial and research assistant at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of American History for a three-year long cultural history project on Memphis, Tennessee. She holds an M.A. degree in American Studies from The University of Texas at Austin and an Interdisciplinary Humanities degree for California State University at Monterey.

AWARDS: First Place – $400, Second Place – $300, Third Place – $200 and Three Honorable Mentions. Prizes and Awards include a free Black & White Exhibition Book.

Another Valentine’s day has come and gone without a gourmet candlelit dinner. In fact, I had fried chicken from deli section of my grocery store and waffle fries. Romantic, eh? Well, maybe my idea of romance is a bit different than you would expect. I spend a lot of my life taking great care of the nutritional value and creativity of my meals. Love means making it okay to eat fried chicken (not baked) in my pajamas while watching Biggest Loser. No really. This next Call is a new twist on love-themed shows. Is this one for you?

JUROR: Anne Coffin is the founder and director of International Print Center New York, a non-profit institution dedicated to the appreciation and understanding of fine art prints. Since its opening in 2000, IPCNY has presented some 40 juried contemporary shows through its New Prints Program and an additional 20 shows focused on a particular theme, medium, genre or culture. Many exhibitions have toured to 2nd venues.

AWARDS: Two artists will get a joint exhibition at CAW in 2013. All selected entries will be included in an online gallery on the CAW website.

SALES: A commission of 40% will be retained by CAW on all sales.
