Just PEACHY!

Fried chicken livers remind me of Georgia. I grew up in Georgia on fried foods and my weight IS under control, my cholesterol good. Of course, it could be argued that my relatively good health is because I left Georgia at age 14, ha. There are lots of healthy, wholesome places to eat in the Peach State; my relatives’ homes just aren’t among them. I don’t think you’ll have the pleasure of scarfing down fried chicken livers at the opening for this next Georgia-based call, but I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you…

JUROR: Miller Zohn has an MA in art history from Florida State University and a BA in Art History from Salem College. Her previous work was with the Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts, Reynolda House Museum of American Art, and Albany Museum of Art in Georgia. Miller Zohn served as Curator of Education at the Columbus Museum for six years before moving to her current position in 2007.

AWARDS: Best in Show – $1000 and the opportunity for a solo exhibit. First Merit 2-D – $500. First Merit 3-D – $500. Six Merit Awards – $200. People’s Choice Award, as voted by the visitors to the exhibition – $100.

SALES: All work must be for sale. The Oconee Cultural Arts Foundation will deduct 35% commission on sales of artwork sold during the exhibition. No price changes from original application permitted.

If you can say nothing else for my taste in food, it is fair and open to all. I will try almost any culinary invention once. And most of them (even the bad ones) I will give a second and/or third chance. But if you haven’t won me over after three attempts, I’m likely done. I give art, artists and their little-known media the same respect. This next call offers consideration for “any” media. I wonder if they REALLY mean that. Let me know…

Check out this Call for Entries for the 49th Annual Juried Exhibition from the Masur Museum of Art (Monroe, LA). The entry fee is low, and the show is open to all media. Did I mention that there is no commission on sales? I love the Masur, and I will bet that you will love it too!

JUROR: Liza Simone is the Founding Director of Phantom Galleries Los Angeles (PGLA), an organization launched in 2005 that facilitates and administrates temporary public arts programming in vacant storefronts throughout Los Angeles County. PGLA’s mission to transform and bridge communities with public art through exhibitions is best exemplified by her work with artists such as Lita Albuquerque, JR, Bill Viola, Futura, and Nancy Buchanan. She has collaborated with TED Prize, the Torrance Art Museum, LA Art Girls, the Los Angeles Art Association, and Fallen Fruit, and Farmlab.

AWARDS: Best in Show is $1,000 and total awards are $3,000.

CALL for ENTRIES: Oil Painting

SAUCE ME UP

My father found steak sauce personally offensive. He thought that the use of steak sauce was a not so subtle indication that his grilling skills were not up to par. “The steak is perfect as it is,” he would say at every grilling opportunity. I suppose it is a lesson learned. Sometimes a steak is a steak, and a steak should be good enough. Representational art, FOR ME, can sometimes be likened to a sauceless steak, wonderful as it is…just not my preference. I know some of you do fantastic representational work, and I have a twinge of guilt that I don’t post more shows for you. Hopefully this one will make up a little ground…

Check out this Call for Entries for the 21st Annual National Exhibition of Representational Oil Painings from Oil Painters of America to be exhibited at the Evergreen Fine Art Gallery in Evergreen, Colorado. The cost is high because you have to be a member, but the prizes are huge. Make me proud…

I almost moved to Kentucky because of a pickle/tamale factory. Have I told you this story? I know, I should search my posts before I write. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So, for once it ISN’T about the pickles or tamales. Nope. I looked into the Paducah Artist Relocation program and fell in love with a pickle/tamale factory in need of rehab. I love factory spaces for art. This next Call is how I relieve myself of the anxiety of not taking the pickle/tamale factory. I submit every year. Eventually they will let me in. You wait and see…

Check out this Open Call from The Soap Factory (Minneapolis, MN). The Soap factory is looking for work for group exhibits, AND they offer installation support, travel, accommodations, and a stipend to those selected to exhibit. Did I mention NO ENTRY FEE?

The Soap Factory exhibits work in its galleries throughout the year. Exhibitions curated from submissions and could have as many as 8 artists. The Soap Factory is a 120-year old ex-industrial warehouse on the banks of the Mississippi River in Minneapolis.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists. They are particularly interested in proposals conceived specifically for The Soap Factory galleries. (So do your homework!) Their programming is unique in that they select only a small proportion of the artists they exhibit from their pool of submissions. They commonly receive 400 artist submissions per season.

DEADLINE: April 30, 2012. They do NOT accept e-mailed submissions. So please keep in mind that this is a POSTMARK deadline.

Light Space & Time Online Art Gallery presents a Juried Competition, in which 2D artists from around the world are called upon to make online submissions for the theme Landscapes for inclusion into the March 2012 online group exhibition.

How does the older generation eat at 4:30 in the afternoon? I am hoping it is just a Golden-Girls-esque stereotype. I prefer to eat late night, but then again, I prefer to do everything at night. Everything tastes better after 8pm, but that may account for the reality of my lifelong struggle with the size of my rear end. My husband likes to jokingly refer to me as his “vampire-honey,” but that is clearly untrue…vampires don’t eat food. But I would look cute as Countess Chocula. Well, we all know I am a little hyper-focused on eating. Anyhoo, I digress. This next call wants to see your vision of the night. Investigate…

CALL for ENTRIES:
Night Light

Night photography reveals a world that we do not consciously see and offers photographers unique creative opportunities.

Night and day, dark and light – one implies the absence of the other. But like yin yang, each has a bit of the other. The surprising thing to first time night photographers is how their images reveal things that the mind’s eye does not see. Different light sources reveal their true colors. Compared to daylight, directed and weaker light creates drama, contrast, mystery and mood.

The dynamic range of light at night tends to be more in line with our tools abilities. Of course there are technical challenges with shooting in low light, but also tremendous creative opportunities. That’s what Darkroom Gallery wants to show with this exhibit.

Do you work with existing light – or do you introduce your own? Maybe you paint with light emitting light brushes. How have you approached shooting at night to express your vision? They want to see.

ELIGIBILITY: Entrants must be at least 18 years old. If younger, you must have a legal guardian make the submission for you.

JUROR: Linda Rutenbergm, a Montreal-born native, who has been a photographer for 30 years. Her MFA in Photography is from Concordia University. She’s taught photography and worked as a freelance photographer for thirty years.

Rutenbergm’s fine art work has been exhibited internationally. She has produced several series:- Urban Visions, Sacred Sites, Terre Caliente, One Island – Many Cities, Mont Royal – A World Apart, The Spiritual Landscape and is presently working on a nocturnal garden series.

Linda has become particularly known for her striking images of flowers taken at night, revealed in a series of books, starting with The Garden at Night: Private Views of Public Edens (2007),After Midnight (2008)and The English Garden at Night (2009).

AWARDS: All selected entries are exhibited in the gallery and included in a full color exhibit catalog. Juror’s Choice receives a 20×35″ vinyl exhibit banner featuring their image. People’s Choice gains free entry into a future exhibit.

SALES: Darkroom offers free matting and framing of accepted entries for the duration of each of their exhibitions, subject to standard sizes. “This is a general call for new work (completed in the last two years) or proposals for new work for the second annual Games and Art exhibition featured at the 8th annual Games+Learning+Society (GLS) conference to be held in June of 2012. Narrative is an essential tool of understanding and communication of ideas. Humanities from history to politics to science are understood and disseminated through narrative tools. Characters and bildungsroman are the flesh and blood of narratives, which link us to our past and help guide our vision of the future. Narrative is a thread which represents, interprets, and shapes our world. Our narrative is often truth for lack of capital-T-Truth as we manipulate it so it may manipulate us. Perhaps most importantly, it is a double-edged sword which grants us access to experiences which may be beyond our reach–independent of space, time, and reality. This exhibition seeks to explore the power of character and narrative through games and art.”

Right Here Over There is an exhibition exploring the physical, mental, and metaphoric landscapes of place and their indelible link to memory. Throughout our lives we are surrounded by a world punctuated by varying spaces, climates, geographies, buildings, and cultures. Accumulating in layers over time, pieces of our physical world provide visual reference points for how we understand one another and ourselves.

THEME: Including (but not limited to) the following may be integrated into the final exhibition: mapping, topography, architecture, nature, distance, home, exile, travel, and personal/social/political geographies.

ELIGIBILITY: All artists, age 18 and older.

MEDIA: All media and styles will be considered.

JUROR: Becky Alley, LAL’s Exhibitions & Programs Director, will select all artwork for exhibition. Alley earned a BFA in studio art from Washington University, and an MFA in studio art from the University of Kansas. Before joining the LAL staff in January 2010, Alley was the Director of University Galleries at Murray State University. She has organized over 100 shows and has curated several major projects including Think Tank, an international show of political art, Creatures Great and Small, a touring exhibition of contemporary art featuring animals, and Love and Things Like Love, an LAL project.

SALES: Not all works need to be for sale, but LAL retains a 30% commission on the retail price of all works sold in the gallery. The artist must determine retail price, which is sent with the application materials.

NO FINGER LICKIN’

I learned table manners in “finishing” class. No, I am not kidding. I went to a southern, Protestant private school through sixth grade. All 5th grade girls took “finishing class” in which we learned posture by walking with books on our heads. We learned that our waist should be 10″ smaller than our bust and hips. And we learned both how to set a table and how to behave while sitting at the table. No really, I’m not kidding. And while I have clearly let go of the 10″-smaller-than-my-bust-and-hips lesson, I still find bad table manners offensive. This next show is looking for something a little more extreme, I suspect.
