I like to believe I am wide open to any kind of food (and art) that comes my way, but watching shows like Chopped reminds me that my palate isn’t really challenged all that often. This next call challenges you to be wide open to digital art. Give ’em your best shot…

CALL for ENTRIES:
Wide Open Digital Arts

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all visual artists and photographers worldwide.

MEDIA: Exceptional digital images, anything goes…digital painting, digital photography, photo-manipulation, vector art, 3D still digital art, fractals, algorithmic art, HDR photography, digital collage, or any other digital form.

DEADLINE: June 1, 2012

NOTIFICATION: The online exhibit begins mid-June, so it must notify quickly.

ENTRY FEE: Entry fees are $25 for the first 5 (or fewer) images, and $4 for each additional image.

JURORS: Selection of the finalists that will appear online in solo artist/photographer galleries will be made by Virginia Christensen and Glen Christensen.

Virginia has enjoyed a long career as an editor and a publisher of photography and art books, and is, herself, an accomplished photographer.

Glen has had a distinguished career as Art Director at major record companies in both New York City and Hollywood. Among his professional accolades have been two Grammy nominations for Best Album Package. AWARDS: All images selected as Wide Open Digital finalists will appear online. Works awarded a Gold Stellar Art Award will be invited to appear in a physical, “brick-and-mortar” gallery exhibit at a later time.

JUROR: For over 30 years, Craig Nelson has been depicting figures landscapes and various environments in rich vibrant oils. His passion for the subjects relates directly to his brush work, weaving mood and emotion into each work of art.

After graduating from Art Center College of Design with distinction, Craig began his career working in Los Angeles for recording companies and motion picture studios, creating portraits and other subjects with strict deadlines. Craig’s countless movie posters include “The Cowboys”, “Slapshot”, and “Homeward Bound” among many others. His album cover credits include, “Sammy Davis Jr. Live”, “Rick Nelson, Country” and “Natalie Cole, Thankful” along with many more.

In 1974 Craig began teaching at Art Center College of Design and for the past 13 years has been sharing his knowledge at the Academy of Art College in San Francisco where he is Director of Fine Art, Drawing and Painting.

Craig teaches two to three workshops a year which have gained in popularity attracting students from all over the United States. His annual January workshop held at Asilomar in Pacific Grove, California is in its 24th year.

My favorite Mexican food is fish. Many Americans have been lulled into thinking of the local fast food taco as representative of Mexican cuisine. But you haven’t eaten truly representative food, in my opinion, until you have had authentic fish seviche marinated in citrus and chiles. This Call encourages you to capture your view of the issues that surround the Mexico border! Say it with art…

Check out the Call for Entries for Beyond the Border from the Coconino Center for the Arts in Flagstaff, AZ. The entry fee is standard, but you’re allowed to send details…even of two-dimensional work. For those of you wanting to add Arizona to your resume, this is a GREAT opportunity!

Beyond the Border

Beyond the Border addresses the human and environmental impact of issues that surround the US / Mexico border, the border wall and border policies. Artists are encouraged to submit art that explores this impact and how changing policy is affecting the environment and/or people. The intent of this exhibition is not to advocate for or against any position, policy or political figure; rather, Beyond the Border offers an opportunity for stories to be shared and questions to be raised that allow viewers to explore the consequences of intensified focus on this region.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists internationally.

MEDIA: Artists may submit work in any media, 2d or 3d. All art forms- literature, photography, video, installation, etc. – are welcome.

DEADLINE: June 30, 2012

NOTIFICATION: July 27, 2012

ENTRY FEE: A $35 Entry fee covers the submission of up to 3 works of art.

JURORS: Jason Hasenbank is Dir. of the Flagstaff Photography Center, in AZ.

Bob Neustadt, Professor of Spanish & Dir. of Latin American Studies at Northern Arizona University, takes students on field trips to the US/Mexico border where students experience the human, environmental & political dimensions of immigration.

Raechel Running’s humanitarian and conservation work represents her five year visual odyssey through the borderlands of Chihuahua and Sonora Mexico. Her images document the history and express the surreal magic, irony and the beauty of the enduring Spirit of the Mexican people connected to the bi-national landscape and history, caught in-between worlds, and divided by border policies. Shawn Skabelund is a conceptual artist who does site specific, place-based installations exploring culture/nature issues.

AWARDS: Stipends in the amount of $250 (to cover costs associated with providing art for the exhibition) will be granted to 4 artists whose accepted entries best exemplify the spirit of Beyond the Border.

SALES: Commission on artwork sold is 30%.

A world that had previously been defined by cheddar, Swiss and American cheeses now suddenly included choices between cow, goat and even sheep’s milk cheeses. Sometimes 25 years is the turning point. CALL for ENTRIES: Art of Photography

CHICKEN, anyone?

Fast food is fast, but I sometimes wonder about the food part. Like you, I am frequently too busy to cook or even shop for food for that matter. But, I have found a lazy alternative to fast food, the rotisserie chicken. In my version, I have it over romaine with a little Parmesan, a few croutons, Italian dressing and a couple of pepperoncini on the side. This next Call for Entries, also has a contingency plan for running out of time… the online entry. You have plenty of time until this deadline, but just in case…

Check out this Call for Entries for the 8th Art of Photography Show which is being held at the San Diego Art Institute this year. The cost to enter is about average; however, last year, 1700 people attended the reception, and the award are spectacular. That’s a bargain…

The Art of Photography 2012

The Art of Photography Show is an established and critical force in the world of contemporary photography. Now in its 8th year, this presentation of world class photography is truly exquisite. The show provides tangible benefits to artists trying to break into the public eye. This well thought out international exhibition provides value to artists at every turn, from first-rate viewing in the judging process to exhibition and publication opportunities, photo industry connections and monetary awards.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists.

MEDIA: Images created via any form of photography will be accepted for consideration (i.e. film, digital, unaltered shots, alternative process, mixed media, digital manipulations, montages, photograms, etc.), so long as part of the image is photographically created.

DEADLINE: June 30, 2012 at 11:59 pm PDT (California Time)

NOTIFICATION: August 7, 2012

ENTRY FEE: $25 for the first entry, $10 for each additional entry. There is no limit to the number of entries an artist may enter. Artists who entered work in any previous Art of Photography Show or Art of Digital Show will receive a $15 discount towards the Art of Photography Show 2012.

JUROR: Julian Cox joined the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco in September 2010 as its Founding Curator of Photography and Chief Curator at the de Young Museum. After holding curatorial positions at the National Library of Wales and the National Museum of Photography, Film & Television, Bradford, England, he moved to the United States in 1992 to pursue his career here. For more than decade he worked with the photographs collection at the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles, and then spent five years leading the photography program at the High Museum of Art, Atlanta. Cox has organized numerous exhibitions on subjects ranging from the dawn of photography’s invention in Europe in the 19th century, to contemporary practice in the United States. He has been a reviewer for the Atlanta Photography Group; Atlanta Celebrates Photography; Palm Springs Photo Festival and Photo NOLA.

Cox is the co-author, with Colin Ford, of the critically acclaimed publication Julia Margaret Cameron: The Complete Photographs (2003), the first catalogue raisonné produced of the work of a photographer. He is the author of many scholarly articles and several books. His recent publications include The Portrait Unbound: Photographs by Robert Weingarten (2010), Road to Freedom: Photographs of the Civil Rights Movement, 1956-1968 (2008), and Harry Callahan: Eleanor (2007).

AWARDS: $2,000 1st Place Award, $1,600 2nd Place Award, $1,200 3rd Place Award, $ 800 4th Place Award, and eleven (11) $400 Honorable Mention Awards.

SALES: Exhibited work will be available for sale (unless the artist designates certain entries NFS). The price for each framed print is entirely up to each artist to decide. The Art of Photography Show will retain a commission of 40% on all sales that occur during the exhibit or which occur later as a direct result of the exhibit. Her portraits depict prominent creative American figures such as Hans Hofmann, Frank Lloyd Wright, Edwin Dickinson and Anjelica Huston as well as foreign nobles and the Christopher Forbes Family. Her work is in several public collections including the Metropolitan Museum NY and the Baltimore Museum. Craig was a recipient of the 2008-9 Pollock-Krasner Award as well as several awards in the including the 1951 National Association of Women Artists, Mary Karasick Portrait Prize.

Last year, 2011, the Haggus Society presented the 1st annual Edges & Curves, Nothing In Between exhibition which successfully challenged the myth that older artists have little to no edge.

This year’s theme “Close Your Eyes” will explore wedge issues presented in the public discourse via all channels of media consumption.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to any artist 40 years and older

MEDIA: 2D (no larger than 32″ x 44 inches), small 3D (no larger than 14″ x 10″ x 8″inches). They are considering opening up the exhibition to performance, music, spoken word/poetry. So, feel free to send those media as submissions, too.

DEADLINE: July 4, 2012

ENTRY FEE: $12.50 for up to 6 images for non-members. Submission fees are waived for Haggus Society members in good standing.

JUROR: Natalie Abrams’ work examines suspending moments in time; the physical and textural experience of those moments, the delicate beauty of our surroundings and the difficulty of preserving the present. An environmentalist, Abrams’ abstract landscapes were first exhibited at the R&F Gallery in the three person show “Not Seeing the Forest”.

Using a technique as fluid and unpredictable as nature itself, led to the development of her highly sculptural ribbon paintings; pieces which blur the line between painting and sculpture. The ribbon works have been exhibited in national exhibitions including the Third Annual Encaustic Invitational, as a highlighted artist at Ball State University with Encaustic Works 07, as well as the 2010 book “Encaustic & Beyond”.

Abrams’ latest work further explores humanity’s relationship to our surroundings in the form of sculptural landscapes and topography, and the mirrored societal relationships therein. Development of this work into freestanding installation works will be the focus of her upcoming Affiliate Artist Residency with the McColl Center.

The Shoe Factory Art Co-op seeks artists to create and submit celestial themed artwork to adorn the walls of Starry Nites Café in Rochester’s Neighborhood of the Arts.

Inspiration should come from the show’s title “Fly Me to the Moon: Celestial Bodies at Starry Nites Café”. Subject matter can include (but is not limited to) objects in the night sky such as asteroids, moons, planets, or stars. Rockets, space ships, and other flying objects are also possible.

The Shoe Factory Art Co-op is looking for originality and boldness of design to stand out on the bistro’s walls.

All mediums considered. All sizes considered, but must be larger than 12”. Artwork will be hung on the walls throughout the café for 3 months.
