AVOCADO?

My culinary specialty is making meals out of whatever I happen to find in the cabinets and making it seem purposeful.  Sure, I can make chocolate mousse out of an avocado, cocoa and honey.  Yes, I can make brownies out of black beans and chocolate chips.  Not everything comes with the perfect ingredients.  And, while most folks won’t think the kit from this Call is perfect to create a masterpiece, you’ll have all the ingredients; just make it work. Take a look…

Check out this Call for Entries for Mystery Build 2014. This year’s theme is “Build a Dream”.  We are so proud that our Featured Artist Amy Kollar Anderson won the People’s Choice Award for the 2013 Mystery Build.  Which one of you is going to win an award for 2014? Investigate this one…

COCOA

Feeling too lazy to make it from scratch, I decided to BUY a ready-made mix for hot chocolate last week.  Then I read the label.  Damn the labels.  I just cannot knowingly consume another artificial sweetener.  Acesulfame Potassium is in almost every mix out there–even the non-diet ones.  So, I went home and pulled out my recipe.  It has 4 ingredients: milk, cocoa, sugar & vanilla.  So, even feeling lazy, I was better off taking the alternative approach.  Just like this next call…

Check out this Call for Entries for The Alternative Approach from the Kiernan Gallery (Lexington, Virginia). The entry fee is very reasonable, and if you do this type of work, this is a fantastic opportunity

Alternative process photography today is a blend of contemporary ideas and historical techniques. Many photographers have rediscovered some of the forgotten early processes, bringing a unique style to present-day image making. Incorporating these processes into their work involves both skilled craftsmanship and a creative blending of new and old. For our third annual alternative process exhibition, The Alternative Approach, The Kiernan Gallery seeks photographers who use handmade and historic photographic techniques in their work.  19th century photographic processes dominate this genre.

I don’t eat turkey on holidays.  I’ve never liked the pressure of culinary conformity, or any other kind for that matter.  I usually have ham or duck.  Interestingly enough, I cooked a turkey the week before Thanksgiving this year because they were on sale.  But, all of the stories of people burning their houses down while attempting to deep fry their turkey don’t make me want to try that method.  I realize those stories are exaggerated to almost urban legend status, but I am simply not enticed.  I AM enticed by this next Call focused on  urban legends though…

Can we talk about food porn?  I think no one will be shocked to hear that I post pictures of my food to social media.  Yes, I am one of those people.  But what I want to know is why most people highly filter their pics.  You don’t OWE it to the restaurant to make their food look better than it is.  So, are you taking pictures of your food to document a beautiful meal or fun experience?  OR, are you just trying to “one up” your friends?  Maybe food pics should just be representational of what your really see before you–kind of like this next call…

Am I the only one that is grateful no one documents their cooking methods?  Because I enjoy experimenting with food and cooking, things often go a little off course.  When the milk you meant to scald curdles, and the onions you meant to caramelize burn and the pie crust meant to be flaky really just crumbles…well, it is good not to have a record of it sometimes.   This next Call is looking for your take on documentary, and it doesn’t have to be your cooking. I am not a naturally-talented baker.  I can create savory dishes all day, but the precision required for baking is a trying experience for me.  I have been experimenting with a peanut butter cookie recipe for days. I prefer not to eat alone.  It isn’t due to all the ridiculous social stigma attached because I dislike eating alone even at home.  When I eat alone, I tend to get sucked into the idea of a gourmet meal which sounds fantastic but takes forever.  In the middle of cooking, I break down and eat a “snack” (often the size of a meal) thereby insuring I won’t be hungry by the time dinner is ready to be eaten.  I may not like to eat alone, but this next Call is for your work–all alone.  And, let’s face it, we all like to SHOW alone…
