My 14 year old TAKES HIS LUNCH everyday.  No joke.  He is allergic to wheat, and public school lunches, aside from having wheat hiding everywhere, are not to his liking.  I have ruined his ability to eat fake food.  So, his lunches are often a little like homemade Lunchables™ with a little of this and a little of that.  But the last time I had to fly, I encounter the most bizarre concept–Lunchables™ for adults.  Well, not literally; at least I don’t THINK Oscar Mayer® is making in-flight foods.  Maybe a little tapas lunch of your own making will help you tackle this gravity defying Call.  Take a look…

Humans have always desired to take to the skies. Fascinated by flight, we construct machines to propel us into the air; from kites and hot air balloons to supersonic jets. We admire birds and costume ourselves with wings, imagining what it would be like to fly without assistance.

JUROR: Jennifer Schlesinger Hanson is an artist, curator, and educator based out of Santa Fe, New Mexico.  Schlesinger Hanson has exhibited widely at Southwest regional institutions, as well as national institutions such as the Southeast Museum of Photography and the Chelsea Art Museum.

Her work has been published online and in print with international publications such as Black and White Magazine U.S and UK, Diffusion Magazine and Fotoritim. Schlesinger Hanson is represented in many public collections, including the Southeast Museum of Photography, FL; The New Mexico Museum of Art and the New Mexico History Museum / Palace of the Governors Photo Archives.

She has received several honors in recognition of her work including a Golden Light Award in Landscape Photography from the Maine Photographic Workshops and the Center for Contemporary Arts Photography Auction Award in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Her awards include the Santa Fe Prize for Photography by the Center and the Eliot Porter Fellowship by the New Mexico Council for Photography.  She has been the Director of VERVE Gallery of Photography since 2005.

Isn’t it funny how certain seasons suddenly bring about the craving for very specific foods?  It never occurs to most people to even think about fruitcake until we start seeing winter holiday decorations appear.  My German in-laws (3rd generation via Wisconsin) save kuchen for Christmas.  Kuchen is German & approximately translates to “cake,” but I know it as a sort of custard & jam filled sweet-dough, low-rise cake that screams Christmas.  Much to my surprise, it is also the state dessert of South Dakota–the home of this next Call.  This is a beautiful venue, by the way…

I am slightly obsessed with the hunt for the perfect piece of land.  My husband & I are determined that 2014 will be the year we finally build a house, but we can talk about that adventure later.  Right now, I have to find the land. I don’t really have any major meals to cook during the holidays.  My mother-in-law traditionally makes homemade sloppy joes for Christmas Eve, and my mother cooks a ham and sweet potato cassarole.  Normally I will make a green veggie, but other than that, I’m off the hook.  My mother is 72 years old.  How long do you think the “I’ll bring the zucchini” line is going to work?  Mmmhmm.  I see  massive meal preparation in my near future too–it’s only fair.  But for all the injustices in our creative lives, there is always this next Call…

It all started when the acclaimed minimalist artist Donald Judd left New York City in the 1970s for this dusty dot of a town.  With the help of the DIA Foundation, Judd acquired an entire Army base, and before he died in 1994, he filled it with art, including light installations by Dan Flavin and Judd’s own signature boxes. Now it’s a whole creative community.

Light is that which compels a photograph into being: shifting, glowing, luminous, obscure or brilliant.

The medium of photography brazenly defined: How our tools, environs and subjects respond to light.  Sometimes the light plays a more prominent role in a photograph, sometimes as a supporting actor and sometimes as the protagonist itself.

Low light, bright light and every stop in between. Light can be luminous & rich, or a stark spotlight, it can wildly dance, or softly edge darkness and cast shadows. Light can reflect and sparkle or be blinding and disarming. Natural light vs. man-made light sources: sunrises and sunsets, moonlight and neon light!

What do you want for dinner?  I hate saying AND hearing this phrase because it is immediately followed by the shuffling of feet and avoidance of eye contact in the attempt to draw out the silence until my husband breaks the silence and makes the decision.  It isn’t that I don’t want to think about it; clearly I think about food ALOT.  However, I find it difficult to translate the abstract notion of what I want for dinner into the concrete dish that would be.  Getting from idea that I want comfort food to identifying that as potato soup with freshly grated Romano is, well, complicated.  I wonder if abstract painters have this same dilemma.  If YOUR work is abstract, check out this next Call…

AWARDS: Winning artists will be featured in a group exhibition at the Limner Gallery, April 10 – May 3, 2014.  The exhibition will also be displayed on the Limner Gallery web site.  One artist will be awarded a two page display in Direct Art Volume #21, Fall 2014 issue. Two artists will be awarded a single page display. Direct Art is published annually and distributed internationally in online and in print formats.
