JUROR: Joe DiMaggio is an internationally known photographer who’s been making award winning photographs for four decades. His dynamic photographs have appeared in Time/Life, Sports Illustrated, Time Magazine, HBO and the list goes on. One of his Sports Illustrated covers was selected by Time Magazine as Picture of the Year. DiMaggio made the obvious transition to advertising work for fortune 500 companies and was extremely successful doing photo illustrations for companies such as AT&T, AOL, Barclays, Xerox, Computer Associates, HBO, RJR Nabisco, Sony, Verizon and Ford Motor Company. DiMaggio has contributed as an international pool photographer, to several Olympic Games.

JoAnne Kalish’s passion for photography came about at a young age. She was the first woman photographer hired to work for “Sports Illustrated” photographing various sporting events and their star athletes. She was contracted by the International Olympic Committee to provide photographic coverage of the 1984 Olympic Games.

Having contributed pictures to most major international publications such as Time Magazine, Der Speigel, Paris Match, and various others, she turned her attention to advertising work and personal projects, including her current Sensuality Series. In the advertising realm, she’s picked up numerous awards, receiving international acclaim for her Claritin and Sports Authority ad campaigns.

Project Basho presents ONWARD Compé 2014, a juried photography exhibition exclusively featuring new and emerging photographers with envelope-pushing work.

ELIGIBILITY: All artists who do not currently have gallery representation. Previous ONWARD Compé photographers are permitted to enter.

MEDIA: ONWARD Compé 2014 has an open theme and any photographic medium including but not limited to historical processes, traditional silver printing, chromogenic printing, and digital processes can be submitted for consideration.

JUROR: This year’s guest juror is renowned photographer Andrew Moore. Working with large format color photography, Moore creates images that synthesize the documentary style with the traditions of fine art into multi-layered historical narratives.

He is best known for his large-scale, painterly photographs of architectural spaces and urban places in flux, the subject matter for his recent best-selling book Detroit Disassembled, as well as past books Inside Havana, Governors Island, and Russia, Beyond Utopia.

His photographs are held in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Yale University Art Gallery, Museum of Fine Arts Houston, the George Eastman House and the Library of Congress, among others.

Five Elements

Photograph the beauty of nature, five elements provide the foundation for our entire physical world.

Earth, and everything on it, is the product of different combinations of the five basic elements: earth, water, fire, air, and space. Everything found in our world is unique because it contains a varying ratio of these five elements.

Whether walking headfirst into a gale of wind or digging our hands into the soil, we possess an inherent familiarity with the elements. All organic and inorganic substances are combinations of them, be it a time-polished rock or a shiny piece of plastic. A multitude of spiritual practices revolve around these five important pieces of the universe.

They are looking for photographic depictions of the natural world. Landscapes, macro & micro shots, abstractions & realistic images that capture the beauty, uniqueness and magic which makes up our planet.

Embracing Our Differences invites artists, photographers, professionals, amateurs, teachers and students to participate in its annual visual art exhibit celebrating diversity.

The Embracing Our Differences exhibit will be displayed throughout the months of April and May 2013 at Island Park along Sarasota’s beautiful bay front.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists. National and international submissions are encouraged.

NOTIFICATION:
Winning selections
will be announced online at embracingourdifferences.org by mid-March, 2014.

ENTRY FEE: None.

45 artists will be selected for the exhibit.

Since 2004, the exhibit has been viewed by more than 850,000 visitors. The exhibit will contain 39 billboard-sized (16 feet wide by 12 1/2 feet high) images of the selected artworks. At the judges’ discretion, an additional 6 “honorable mentions” may be selected.

SELECTION PROCESS: Final selections will be chosen based on artistic excellence in reflection of the theme “Embracing Our Differences.”

The art-work will also be evaluated on how it will read outdoors when enlarged to billboard size – 16′ wide by 12.5′ high.

Artists are encouraged to use
bold saturated colors and strong lines.

Final selections will be made by a 3-judge panel of professional artists, curators and art professionals.

AWARDS: A total of $3,000.00 in awards will be presented.

JUROR: Jennifer Schlesinger Hanson is an artist, curator, and educator based out of Santa Fe, New Mexico. She graduated from the College of Santa Fe in 1998 with a B.A. in Photography and Journalism and was an adjunct Professor there from 2005-2006. Schlesinger Hanson has exhibited widely at southwest regional institutions such as the Marion Center for Photographic Arts (SFUAD) and the Santa Fe Art Institute, as well as national institutions such as the Southeast Museum of Photography and the Chelsea Art Museum.

Her work has been published online and in print with international publications such as Black and White Magazine U.S and UK, Diffusion Magazine and Fotoritim. Schlesinger Hanson is represented in many public collections. Schlesinger Hanson’s own work uses various photographic mediums depending on the series she is working on. She is currently working in 19th Century albumen printing.

AWARDS: 1st Place: $300 Excellence in Photography Award, Sataporn Suravichai Memorial, Winner’s Exhibition Opportunity and one-year STAC Artist Membership. 2nd Place: $100 Award of Merit, Dr. & Mrs. Roger Gilmont Fund, Winner’s Exhibition Opportunity and One-year STAC Artist Membership.

I am moving temporarily. In addition to being musicians, my husband and I renovate houses for resale; however, we haven’t owned our own home in about 10 years. We have finally decided to buy or build. But in the meantime, our current rental has turned into a haven for mold & mildew. So, we’re starting fresh in a new, smaller house (& smaller kitchen). Film & video have become easily accessible. One can watch content on a website, television, a home projector, or even a cell phone. For some artists and filmmakers those vehicles are copies of the original artwork, each one degraded by its format. MNA believes there is a magic in seeing the film projected as a print. There is a presence a poet has reading his/her own writing. There is a feeling that resonates in your chest when seeing a band live. For these reasons MNA encourages live music, performance and audio to expand the cinematic experience beyond the screen. MNA asks that in the spirit of the festival you not video or create copies of your performance. Some participants have gone as far as to destroy the work after its first run at the event.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists

MEDIA: Contemporary art that incorporates Super 8mm, 16mm, 35mm or altered light projections as part of a sculpture, installation, dance, or expanded cinema performance. Submissions including digital projections will not be considered (i.e. HDcam, DigiBETA, DVcam, DVD) all moving images should be from an analog source.

DEADLINE: October 31, 2013

NOTIFICATION: Nov. 15, 2013
