mania

It is snowing like crazy at my house right now, and I promise you that the grocery store is crowded with people shopping as though it is the last food they will ever buy.  There is something about the peaceful quilt of snowfall that brings out the animal instinct regarding food.  My favorite is when people stock up on microwaveable food that they won’t be able to cook if there is no electricity.  What would these folks think if they could see themselves in the mirror?  This next call is a “momentary mirror” of sorts.  Take a look…

Check out this Call for Entries from Filter Photo Festival for Archetype Drift, an exhibit at the Johalla Projects Gallery (Chicago, IL).  The entry fee is low, and I appreciate the questions this Call asks.  Investigate for yourself…

CALL for ENTRIES:
Archetype Drift

Photography can be a painful mirror.  Because of its illustrative tendencies and mnemonic capacities, photography enables us to tell the stories we want to tell with a hammer that is the frame. What happens when the medium gets in the way of the most important narratives?

Photography can be a seductive enabler that, at its worst, allows us to fetishize, beautify, and conduct shallow investigations. Meanwhile, paradigmatic changes in history and culture metastasize alongside new technological ways to make, edit, and distribute images. Are photographers pushing envelopes of meaning and relevance? Are they even keeping pace?

Powerhouse Gym by Brian UlrichWith the ubiquity of images high and low, how does an image-maker create cultural value in 2013? Archetype Drift is a call for new methods of photographic making, editing, and presentation.  It is a call for risk taking, chance operations, relabeling, and letting go of the comfortable.  It is in itself an experiment and a (momentary) mirror.

The biology of food and nutrition both terrifies and thrills me.  I am scared that non-genetically-modified corn is virtually non-existent.  I can’t just avoid corn; it is IN EVERYTHING.  But I also believe in the healing power of eating the right foods and avoiding the wrong foods.  I love meat and cheese, but I also know the benefits, first hand, of lowering or eliminating them in your diet (watch the movie Forks over Knives if you’re interested).  This next call wants your take on the art of biology–not necessarily related to food, of course.  Take a look…

Check out this Call for Entries from SlowArt Productions with Art Biologic. The entry fee is reasonable at $35. I vividly remember the first piece of pizza I ate.  It was Totino’s (no, they aren’t a sponsor, but they should be).  I thought it was the best thing I ever ate.  I was around 4 years old.  I still think the little cubes of pepperoni are ingenious, and I still turn to this junk food classic when I am sick.  I realize it isn’t logical to crave junk food when you’re ill, but I do.  Yes, I know this runs contrary to my whole foods mantra. Deal with it; I’m only  human.  Sometime there is nothing like a first.  I’ve eaten a lot of gourmet pizza since then, but I still have the sweetest memories of the first.  This next Call is an opportunity for you to be among this site’s first artists.  Take a look…

of my heart

Second chances make the world go round. For years I professed a hate for beets and asparagus.  I LOVE almost everything edible, but I had bad experiences with these two.  In hindsight, my asparagus experience had been of the gray canned variety, and my beets experience had been with the canned pickled variety as a child.  I was convinced a while ago to retry FRESH asparagus and now I am addicted.  I had a roasted beet and goat cheese salad in Arizona two years ago, and now I keep beets on hand at all times.  This next show’s deadline was originally January 10th, but it has been extended to February 12th.  Don’t miss your second chance

I used to think always equate urban settings with sushi; however, sushi can be found everywhere these days.  I know of a town with a population of approximately 450, and even their local convenience store carries sushi.  I may have to revert to the idea of street vendors or food trucks as urban food.  Or maybe truly urban food is represented not by a specific type of food so much as a large variety of options.  Hmmm.  This next call wants to know how YOU define urban.  Investigate this opportunity…
