scrambling your EGGS

I dream about hollandaise sauce pretty often.  I’m not sure why.  Ive looked into what dreams about food symbolize, and while I can find lot of references to the symbolism of eggs, the main component of hollandaise sauce, but nothing sauce-specific.  Anyone have suggestions?  In the meantime, this Call is an opportunity to investigate your own dreams.   Great theme…

soup to BEANS

It is all a matter of taste, right?  I know that for every food there is someone who believes its tastes better than all other foods, but I still can’t quite resolve myself to the notion that some foods aren’t just objectively bad.  Warhol is famous for, among other things, depictions of a soup.  That same soup is the foundation for thousands of green bean casserole recipes.  SOMEone believes it to be “Mmm mmm good”, but I am not one of the some.  I don’t have a lot of food limits, aside from Century eggs and boiled okra, but just no.  It is a black and white issue for me –just like this next Call.  Investigate this opportunity…

CORN

I have such reservations about corn but none about corn pudding.  We had it for dinner tonight.  I always think of corn as hailing from Iowa.  (I am clearly like a marketing sponge.)  But as I spent hours on the back roads of Ohio last year trying to avoid the nightmare that is I-75 South, I drove through miles and miles and miles of corn fields, intersected only by the occasional two-lane or gravel road.  Dazzling. Beautiful. Waving both “hello” & “goodbye”.  A landscape of corn.  In Ohio.  This next Call wants your landscape or seascape, or even your corn.  Take a look…

I believe the concept of “edible” is abstract, not just subjective.  Technically, anything that doesn’t kill you is edible.  Well, really, you can still eat things that WILL kill you.  So, I suppose if you are physically able to consume something, it is edible.  So, maybe the notion of “eatability” is the abstract one.  Why would someone pay a fortune to eat a fertilized duck egg?  Because they are yummy? Doubtful.  But, the precedent for eating eggs and eating ducks has been set, so I understand why it would occur to someone to try.  But coconut?  Green or furry, how did someone look at a coconut and say, “let’s eat one”?  Abstract.  This next Call is also purely abstract.  Take a look…

Either way, the more colorful portion of my menu is highly dependent on spinach and carrots these days.  I love spinach and carrots, but there are only so many ways to eat them in a week.  Fingers crossed that Punxsutawney Phil got it right because I would welcome some early Spring color.  In the meantime, this Call is providing a colorful outlet.  Love this theme…

BLUES

I have broken my own blue-food rule.  I have ranted & raved for years about food coloring.  I have forever sworn off any faux food colored any shade of blue, but I have given in.  This year will be my very first time in my life that I will have a “real” Christmas tree (living, as opposed to artificial).  So, I decided that all the ornaments and decorations should be “real” too (read handmade or homemade).  I couldn’t resist the most beautiful electric-blue gum drops I have ever seen.  I am testing them out as a sweet garland.  Forgive the hypocrisy, but I promise not to eat them.  This next Call is another non-edible use for all things blue.  Maybe this one’s for you…

FUNGI

I’m afraid of eating wild mushrooms.  Correction, I am afraid of improperly identifying a mushroom as edible and doing unexpected harm to my family.  So, I have been trying to decide whether or not to grow them myself.  Growing mushrooms at home always conjures images of damp, basement-like conditions.  But research indicates I can crow them on logs in dappled shade, above ground, among the living, with fewer creepy-crawlies.
