Eating solely by candlelight is not romantic. When the world is teaching its young boys and girls romantic guestures, the candlelit dinner is among the cliches reinforced repeatedly by television and print ads. Yes, candlelight is lovely and flattering, but not SOLELY candelight. I want to see what I am eating, or about to eat. I want to enjoy the presentation of the food. I DO NOT want to accidentally put a forkfull of wasabi in my mouth by accident. This next Call COULD be all about candlelight. What’s your bright idea?

Water Street Studios in Batavia, IL announces a Call for Entries to its first of many juried, themed shows, “Illuminate.”

The Illuminate exhibit, juried by Frank Maugeri, will explore light in all of its forms and is open to conceptual interpretation: mechanically lit pieces are welcome, as are depictions of luminescence, as well as conceptual pieces.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists.

MEDIA: All media may be considered. However, this will be a dimly lit show, with the gallery’s house lights off and sporadic track lights on.

DEADLINE: December 11, 2011

NOTIFICATION: Within 2 weeks of submission or by December 25, 2011.

ENTRY FEE: There is a submission application fee of $30. Water Street Studios Artist Members receive a one time $10 discount per year on their application.

JUROR: Water Street Studios (Batavia, IL) is honored to have Frank Maugeri, Co-Artistic Director of RedMoon as their Guest Juror for the “Illuminate” Show. You can see Frank Maugeri’s recent presentation at One State Together by visiting the Sixty Inches from Center website.

AWARDS: Best of Show artists will be awarded: A free 2-week Solo Show in Water Street Studios 2nd floor gallery, valued at $200. Honorable Mention artists will be given free advertisements on the Water Street Studios’ website, Facebook page, and in their newsletter. The winners’ artwork will be printed on Water Street Studios’ postcards as advertisement for the show.

Wendy Erickson, editor of Photo Technique Magazine, is a New Jersey based photographer, writer and teacher. She seamlessly blends together traditional and digital imaging, and uses both in her art. Her photographs and writings have been widely exhibited, and published in numerous books and articles.

Stephen Weaver is an award winning photographer with over 35 years experience making images of the natural world. Formally educated as a geologist, Steve combines his scientific knowledge with his photographic abilities to produce stunning images that illustrate the beauty of the structure and composition of the earth and its natural systems.

CALL for ENTRIES: Rocky Mountain Art Books

The Rocky Mountain Art Book Collection, is an exhibition project (with suggested themes) where the participants will receive a blank sketch pad to do whatever they please artistically over the course of four months. This project will be localized to communities throughout the Rocky Mountain region but also encouraging those across the country or the world to participate. After completed, participants will then submit their art books to be on display in an exhibition that will take place the third week in December of 2011.

ELIGIBILITY: The project encourages anyone from anywhere who want to be a part of it, to participate. Anyone meaning, anyone: kids, parents, students, seniors, writers, artists, dreamers, wanders, the guy next door, the crazy cat lady, the ski bum, the couch surfer, anyone.

MEDIA: All forms of mediums are welcome.

DEADLINE: The distribution of the sketch pads began mid-September and are ongoing. Sketch pads are due to be returned Janaury 9, 2012.

ENTRY FEE: The participation fee is $25.

JUROR: The work of Elizabeth Opalnik has been featured in Zoom, Camera Arts, Black and White Magazine, Silvershotz, Photo District News, Collectors Photography and Progresso Fotografico, among others. Commercial clients including Life Magazine, Gossard Lingerie, Coty Perfume, Michael Good Design, Sea Air Holidays and ongoing campaigns for The Ladies Professional Golf Association and Nancy Lopez Golf. She is exhibited, collected and published internationally and recently published her first monograph “Poetic Grace: Elizabeth Opalenik Photographs 1979-2007”.

She uses the Mordançage darkroom process, hand painting, and contemporary digital imaging in mix, utilizing their combined boundless creative possibilities. Between imagination and dreams, she believes all great photographs are an extension of the photographer – in essence, self-portraits. Her darkroom skills, photo therapeutic approach, and the inspiration from her work, make her a popular facilitator. She conducts photography workshops internationally, in partnership with the Santa Fe Photographic Workshops, the Maine Media Workshops, the British Guild of Portrait Photographers, National Geographic Expeditions, The Rencontres d’Arles, and others.

AWARDS: All selected entries are exhibited in the gallery and included in a full color exhibit catalog. Juror’s Choice receives a 20×35″ vinyl exhibit banner featuring their image. People’s Choice gains free entry into a future exhibit.

Call me closed minded, but there are somethings that I am not interested in eating. Nature is in my face here in the Great Smoky Mountains, and we eat local honey for its ability to help reduce our allergies. However, I am not drinking poison ivy tea everyday for 6 weeks to reduce my chance of breaking out in a rash. People do it. I went on a guided hike and listened to my naturalist explain the ritual to me. Call me crazy, but you shouldn’t eat anything whose name starts with “poison”. Some things ought not be disturbed. Nature Undisturbed is a celebration of the natural world. The show brings together a diverse collection of photography showcasing the wonders of nature that many don’t take the time to see. It is the hope of the show creators that after viewing the photography, you are inspired to get out on the not-so-beaten path. Perhaps you happen to take along a camera to capture the light through the leaves and continue to enjoy that day each time you view the photo.

This is the show that brings the outside in for all to enjoy.

The exhibition showcases simple, majestic, beauty in nature, wildlife & local landscapes. Each unique image echos the sentiment “a picture is worth a thousand words,” a powerful reinforcement of the importance of greenspace & habitat protection for future generations of people & wildlife.

JUROR: Brett Abbott joined the High as the new Curator of Photography in April 2011. Brett came from the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles where he served as associate curator in the department of photographs.

Abbott recently received the 2010 Lucie Award for Curator/Exhibition of the Year. He received his Master of Arts in art history from Williams College in 2002 and his Bachelor of Arts in the same field from Stanford University in 2000.

AWARDS: 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place cash prizes will be awarded in each category. A People’s Choice Award will also be presented. Nature, Undisturbed, Flint Riverkeeper and Southern Conservation Trust may feature winning photos in their newsletter and on their website. The photographer retains all rights to their photos.

SALES: All exhibitors may sell their work. The artist will receive 50% of the sales price. A portion of proceeds from the show will go to Flint Riverkeeper and Southern Conservation Trust.

Lana Santorelli is currently curating the following group exhibition for winter 2012: “Love/Hate”.

This show theme calls for artwork that relates to the broad themes of love and hate. Work can address either or both. This show aims to investigate the fine line that lies between these two polar opposites. This show is slated to run from February 4th to March 18th, 2012.

Lana Santorelli Gallery has an open submission policy, accepting work year round. You may submit work to this themed exhibition open call or as a general submission.

The Built Environment

Images that capture a vision of the man made world around us.

We’ve been documenting the built environment since the beginnings of photography. It’s natural – our lives are entwined with and dependent upon structures of all kinds. Let us examine the genius designs, abundant materials both found and fabricated, engineering feats, beauty and function, of our constructed environments. Technical mastery has much to do with a great architectural photograph, but also an understanding of the architect’s vision, and/or the humanity that invigorates and utilizes its spaces.

Whether a skyscraper or a shed, chasm span or walking bridge, from convenience store to industrial complex, public or personal (heck, an outhouse is a pertinent structure), and even the remains of such, Darkroom Gallery is looking forward to featuring your built environments.

JUROR: With an engineering degree from Trinity College (Dublin) and an Architect/Author father (Raymond McGrath), Norman McGrath was primed for educated view of his subject. He has been photographing architecture and interiors for decades, capturing the work of major architects and designers and their well-known works. His images have been featured in the foremost architectural publications, as well as his popular book, “Photographing Buildings Inside Out”. The American Institute of Architects selected McGrath for its Institute Honor award. McGrath continues to author and co-author books illustrated with architectural photography (“Manhattan Skyscrapers”, “Skyscraper Rivals”, and New York’s Pennsylvania Station”) as well as educate and inspire students of photography at the Maine Photographic Workshops, the Palm Beach Photo Workshops, and the Calumet Institute of the University of Maryland.

SUBMISSIONS:

Age: Entrants must be 18+ years old. If younger, a guardian may submit for you.

Ownership: All photos must have been taken by the entrant. If you are a guardian submitting for a minor, please make it clear on the submission.

Digital Submissions: All submissions must be made by digital files through:

1. Upload on the Dark Room Gallery website or

2. Sent via email to submissions (at) VermontPhotoSpace.com. This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it along with an application form. There is a $5.00 surcharge for email entries.

3. Images should be as large as possible but no larger than 1280 pixels on the longest side, type jpg – set to the highest quality. DPI can be set to any number, but if you must specify something to go with 72 dpi.

FEES: Up to 3 images may be submitted for a fee of $20 US for on-line submission and $25 for email submission. Add’l images $5 US per image.

Mural Project

“Attitudinal Healing Connection (AHC) a non-profit organization in West Oakland is looking for local artists to paint the Hoover Corridor Neighborhood’s first large scale mural project. Using the theme of super heroes, the murals are going to be designed by local middle and high school students and are intended to uplift and positively transform the neighborhood.

“Over the course of three years we plan to complete six murals under freeway overpasses includingSan Pablo Avenue, Market Street, West Street, and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. These murals will serve as a gateway to West and Downtown Oakland and can become a key way in which our community is perceived. This is a call for local artists interested in helping to revitalize the Hoover District inWest Oakland.” –from the Call for Entries (downloadable below)

ELIGIBILITY: Must be over 18 years or age. You must have previous mural painting experience. AND, YOU MUST CARE! Be passionate about social justice & want to create positive change

APPLICATION: Please send a letter of interest, resume and a list of references to muralproject@ahc-oakland.org.

INTERVIEW PROCESS: They will be conducting interviews in late December/early January. If you are selected, they will notify you. Please bring 8-12 samples of your work to the interview.
