JUROR: The juror for “I-mag-i-na-tion” will be Aline Smithson. After a career as a New York Fashion Editor and working along side the greats of fashion photography, Aline discovered the family Rolleiflex and never looked back. Now represented by galleries in the U.S. and Europe and published throughout the world, Aline continues to create her award-winning photography with humor, compassion, and a 50-year-old camera. Her work has been featured in numerous publications including a recent cover of PDN, the PDN Photo Annual, Communication Arts Photo Annual, Eyemazing, and others. She has exhibited widely. Aline writes and edits the blogzine, Lenscratch, has been the Gallery Editor for Light Leaks Magazine, a contributing writer for Diffusion ,Too Much Chocolate, Lucida, and F Stop Magazines, and has been curating exhibitions for a number of galleries and on-line magazines. Though she was nominated for The Excellence in Photographic Teaching Award in 2008, 2009, and 2010 and for The Santa Fe Prize in Photography in 2009 by Center, she considers her children her greatest achievement.

AWARDS: Cash prizes of $250 each will be awarded for The Juror’s Award and The Director’s Award, along with a $100 prize for the Visitors’ Choice Award. There will also be five Honorable Mentions.

Earthy foods are yummy. I know that is obvious to many of you. But, I have to say that learning to appreciate earthy foods is the biggest change in my palate over the years. I’m still not a fan of what I call “dirt crackers.” I DO have my earthy limits, but I am in love with whole grains, whole foods, in fact. And the earthiness of merlot doesn’t exactly hurt my feelings. Food should taste like itself, not the over-refined, processed version of itself that is so cheaply and readily available these days. Earth Through a Lens (ETAL) is pleased to announce its third annual photo competition and display focused on promoting a sustainable environment. Photographers living in North America are invited to submit up to 3 cell phone derived images or up to 4 digital images produced by a camera. With a full range of facilities including accommodation, studio and gallery, creative practitioners have the exceptional opportunity to extend their artistic engagement in the heart of Tokyo.

Not only will artists be able to pursue their own individual research and practice, but they will be connected to the extensive network of Tokyo’s art scene through the hub that is 3331. With the energy of the electronics and anime haven of Akihabara right at one’s doorstep and the traditional cultures of downtown but a stone’s throw away artists will be able to experience all aspects of this kaleidoscopic city from this convenient base.

Artists are not only able to spend time in Tokyo, but are able to create work onsite and then finally exhibit what they have developed during their stay, in the distinct setting of 3331 Arts Chiyoda. They are pleased to be able to offer these facilities to artists who can contribute to the creative expressions of this metropolis and engage its inhabitants in new ways.

ENTRY FEE: No fee to enter; however there is a fee to participate.

They particularly encourage applications from galleries, museums, universities, and arts organizations. They also welcome approaches from individual artists; however, they recommend that artists consider applying in groups of 2-5. Please note that 3331 is unable to offer financial support to artists in residence in this program.

Being aware of serving sizes sucks. It takes all the fun out of over eating. I’ve been on a lot of diets over the years, but the only thing that really works is being AWARE of what you put in your body. The serving sizes I use most often? A deck of cards is about the size of an appropriate portion of protein like fish or chicken, and a square inch is approximately 1 ounce of cheese. Moderation sucks. Square Inches

Redefine the very basic concept of SPACE. The challenge is to take 20 square inches of the Square Inches of Love project’s “real estate” and let your ideas run wild. Each entry is limited to only 20 square inches of space, but multiple entries are allowed. Every single entry will be displayed online and as part of the resulting traveling exhibition. Entries will share real estate with other individuals and companies (designer + non-designer) as a part of the overall “Square Inches of Love” project.

Los Angeles architectural design company, OPeX studios, will undertake transforming all the collected submissions into a 1000 in. x 1000 in. (1 million sq. in.) custom-printed fabric quilt base, fabricating the 3D structures that guide exploration of the exhibit, and taking the installation on the road. 50% of all online submission proceeds will be donated to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists.

MEDIA: Graphic Design, or any media that can be represented in 20 square inches. Submitted digital image shall be 20 square inches (1 x 20, 2 x 10, or 4 x 5) and 300 dpi.

DEADLINE: December 15, 2011

ENTRY FEE: Each competition requires the purchase of exactly 20 Square Inches of exhibit space at $1 per sq. in. for a total of $20.

JUROR: Evaluation of the proposals will be focused on their innovation + creativity + novelty of the idea. Jury is still to be announced.

AWARDS: 1st Prize $1,000, 2nd Prize $500 and 3rd Prize $500. Top 5 will get the opportunity to incorporate 3D elements of their design in the final installation, should there be any. Top 10 Receive Honorable Mention and a custom printed T-shirt with their design.

SALES: Submitted images can also be linked to a website to further promote sales, your creativity, business, or other endeavors.

Heart smart foods have become the norm in my house. I have scary-low blood pressure, and my doc says it makes me far less likely to have a heart attack or stroke. However, my husband is one of those string beans that can consume 5000 calories per day. If Captain Consumption is going to grow old with me, the meats are going to have to be lean, the vegetables plentiful, whole grains a constant and cheese…just an occasional indulgence. These days Kim also feels at home painting in Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, Wyoming and Texas. Kim received her Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from Kansas State University in 1992.

Kim’s work has been featured in numerous magazine articles. She has exhibited in many prestigious national competitions, winning many awards, including Best of Show at the 2010 Nomades del Arte National Invitational Exhibit held at Southwest Gallery. Kim has also particpated in museum shows in Arizona, Wyoming, Montana and Oklahoma.

Using the theme of super heroes, the murals are going to be designed by local middle and high school students and are intended to uplift and positively transform the neighborhood.

“Over the course of three years we plan to complete six murals under freeway overpasses includingSan Pablo Avenue, Market Street, West Street, and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. These murals will serve as a gateway to West and Downtown Oakland and can become a key way in which our community is perceived. Her taste in photography tends toward emerging and established artists with strong personal projects, surprising content and evidence of political or social engagement. She’s most drawn to introspective, provocative work.

Dina Bova was born in Moscow and currently lives in Israel. Her images have been awarded in Px3, Hasselbald Masters, Sony Awards, 1st edition of the JMCA, Nikon, PDN’s World in Focus, and have won 21 Gold medals in international photo-contests under FIAP/PSA patronage in USA, Austria, France, England, Croatia, Ukraine, Taiwan and Israel. Her art is a world of allegories, metaphors and multifaceted associations. She thinks that it’s not important how an artist creates his work. It can be created with any tool and any medium, but it should speak for itself and convey a very special mood. It should need no explanation, no elaboration and no apologies. It can be very aesthetic or the opposite of it. For Dina, the most important thing is freeing the imagination.

AWARDS: The Julia Margaret Cameron Award will be given to 12 women photographers which will be invited to exhibit (and sell) their work in a very selective collective exhibition in Paris during 2013, honoring one hundredth year of the birth of Robert Capa, co-founder of Magnum Photos and famous war photojournalist. WPGA will take care of the framing and matting, as well as all gallery expenses. A catalog will be printed, and all 12 awardees will receive one free copy.

SALES: Exhibitors will receive 40% of the sales, 20% will be reserved for the gallery/organizers, and 40% will be donated to a charitable organization selected by the awardees.

“Visualizing the Black Condition…” is a mixed media exhibition of art that draws upon the theme of the 2012 NCOBPS Annual Meeting, “The Black Condition within Global Shifts and Persistent Structures of Inequality.” Artwork featured in the show will draw inspiration from and address ideas about blackness in the Diaspora, e. g., the persistent vestiges and new manifestations of “neo colonialism”; the persistent needs and/or demands of black citizens and their allies for democratic governance and responsiveness, economic redistribution and equality; and the intersections of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, class, ideology, religion, and region, and how these identities serve as the basis for group identity, mobilization for democratic participation, civic engagement, social movements, and policy reform in the US and abroad.

35th Annual National Juried Art Exhibition

The College’s annual national juried exhibition highlights work selected from entries by artists from across the country. The show typically features a wide array of media ranging from photography, prints, and painting to metal, clay, glass, and fiber. The Harper College Educational Foundation sponsors this exhibit.

ELIGIBILITY: All artists over 18 living in the USA are eligible.

SIZE & MEDIA: In its largest dimension, individual artwork must be no greater than 22 inches including frame if applicable. All media excluding
jewelry, film and video/digital video are eligible. Weight limitation of 45 pounds. No work that requires special installation or instructions will be accepted.

JUROR: Aron Packer, owner and Director of Packer Schopf Gallery, will serve as the show juror. In September 2006, Packer joined forces with William Schopf to open their current space in the thriving West Loop gallery district in Chicago. Since 1987, Packer has mounted more than 200 exhibitions. Over the years, his focus has shifted from folk art to predominantly contemporary art, curating what he considers to be compelling, whatever the genre. This means art that is a little obscure, idiosyncratic, and reflective of the road not obviously taken.
