Learn more about the Sylvia White Gallery!Each summer, Sylvia White Gallery offers an exhibition opportunity to all artists interested in applying.  This year selected artists will be exhibited in their 4th Annual Juried Show.  Additionally, three artists will be selected for concurrent solo shows at dates to be arranged.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all US/International resident artists at least 18 years of age.

MEDIA:  Eligible entries include paintings, mixed media, works on paper, photography, sculpture, installation art, digital media, video and performance.

DEADLINE: Midnight, June 30, 2011

ENTRY FEE:  $35 (US dollars only) for 3 images, $5 each additional image, maximum 11 ($75).  If you want a website review in lieu of reviewing individual images, entry fee is $50.

AWARDS:  Selected artists will participate in our 4th Annual Juried Show August 3-September 3.  Additionally, three artists will be selected for a concurrent solo exhibition.  All entries will be considered for both opportunities.

SALES:  Unless otherwise specified, accepted works will be considered for sale at the price indicated and 30% of the selling price will be retained by The Sylvia White Gallery.  A purchaser may not remove work until the end of the exhibition.

I love salt water taffy.  I love the taste and the colors and the main street feel of the shops that allow you to look on as the taffy is hand-crafted.  Funny enough, most of the towns that conjure images of salt water taffy for me are no where near the coast.  Odd.  I wonder if the town from which this next Call hails has a salt water taffy shop?  If you get into the show, let me know.

The Gallery at Firehouse Square, historic New London’s only Maritime Gallery, has just celebrated their one-­year anniversary. The gallery is a striking, open space in a handsomely renovated building in the heart of the city’s bustling business and arts district.

The Gallery is one block off the harbor and the Thames River, and is surrounded by many other successful galleries and busy restaurants.

The Gallery does not necessarily
always hold a “salt water” flavor.

I have an unnatural love of olives.  Stuff them with jalepenos, blue cheese or even the lowly pimento… I don’t care.  I love olives so much I have a beautiful little dish I bought from a ceramics show specifically for olives shaped like a lovely little trough that prevents my having to chase olives all over my plate.  One problem… the dish is no longer big enough.  If you make it to the opening for this next Call, please find a new olive solution for me while you’re perusing the BEST in clay work, function or not.  Take a look…

Learn more about Visions in Clay 2011!The LH Horton Jr Gallery is a non-profit art gallery located on the campus of San Joaquin Delta College in Stockton, California. The Gallery provides excellent exhibition opportunities, with over 2000 square feet of exhibition space, an extended 22 ft. ceiling with mounts, and over 1200 visitors to each exhibition.

ELIGIBILITY:  Open to all artists residing in the US.

MEDIA:  Ceramic works of any thematic and stylistic presentation will be accepted for entry.  Clay must be the primary medium, and works may be functional, decorative or sculptural. Assembled works may not exceed 4ft. in any direction, and 50lbs in weight.

DEADLINE:  June 6, 2011

Schwartz, Ph.D., has identified an international movement of artists who use clay confrontationally within the context of what might be called: art activism.  This research culminated in the book, Confrontational Ceramics.  She lectures internationally to bring ideas and artists together in the service of clay.  Her current community service is spent for Watershed, a residency in Maine that supports serious artists to work in clay and the K-12 Foundation for early childhood education in the ceramic arts.

Learn more about Confrontational Ceramics by Juror Judith Schwartz!Schwartz has been a professor for 30 years (Director of Sculpture in Craft Media at New York University) helping young artists reach their potential.  She started a Museum for Ceramic Art to open in NYC, and curates numerous exhibitions, some of which have received critical acclaim.  She teaches studio courses in ceramic sculpture for undergrad and graduate students.  She has received many awards, including the JD Rockefeller III grant in Art Education, the Everson Museum’s award for service and excellence in the field of ceramic education, Honors Award from the National Council on Education in the Ceramic Arts, the Distinguished Service Award from The Clay Art Center in Port Chester, NY, and, most recently, a Fullbright (senior specialist category).

AWARDS:  Best of Show: $1000, 2nd Place: $600, and 3rd Place: $350.

Learn more about the Celeste Prize 2011The Celeste Network announces a call to artists for Celeste Prize 2011, November 11-13, 2011 at The Invisible Dog, Brooklyn, New York.  The prize has been established to promote international contemporary art in the widest possible sense. 

There will be a final art exhibition with 50 artworks, a final catalogue of circa 150 pages with circa 120 illustrated works of art and critical texts, as well as 5 prize awards and benefits totaling 30,000 € (approx. $42,000 US).  The exhibition of finalist works, voting and awards will take place at The Invisible Dog, Brooklyn, New York, 11-13 November 2011.

On feeling sacrificable by 2010 Painting Winner Gianni PolitiELIGIBILITY: The art competition is open to any person practicing art either as a professional artist in full-time or part-time, student artist or self-taught artist from anywhere in the world. There is no age limit for applicants and the prize is open to all artists whatever their qualifications, with or without experience of public or private exhibitions, critical acclaim, or collectors at a national or international level. The prize encourages participation by artists at every level.

MEDIA:  Painting, photography, graphics, drawing, print, video, sculpture, installation.  Excellence in content, contemporary aesthetic, technique, and material is sought in the selection of works for the final exhibition.  Works of art submitted to the prize must have been completed in the last 24 months, and do not necessarily have to have been exhibited before.  There is no special subject, title or theme required for participating works, they can range from being figurative to abstract, from conceptual to participatory in content and presentation.

When people hear “American Food” they think of a homogenous buffet of beige food, but American food is a great quilt of influences from around the world.  For example, New Mexican Cuisine is also very different than the preferred Tex-Mex style of Mexican-American food in Texas and Arizona.  One of its most defining characteristics is the dominance of the New Mexican chile—in red and green varieties, depending on the stage of ripeness when picked.  Other distinctive elements include blue corn, the stacked enchilada, and sopapillas into which honey is added moments before eating.  Eat a little for me at the opening of this next show…

Learn more about American Plains Artists!The American Plains Artists announce a call to artists for a juried exhibition, September 8 – October 30, 2011 at the New Mexico Farm & Ranch Heritage Museum, Las Cruces, NM.

ELIGIBILITY:  Open to artists working in any traditional 2D or 3D fine art media in a realistic or representational manner reflecting the theme of the American Plains completed within the last three years, original work only and not previously shown with APA.

MEDIA:  No photography or computer generated art accepted. We have to have both the image size of the artwork itself and the outside dimensions of the frame.  The maximum size for 2D work is 1564 square inches including the outside dimension of the frame.  An example of that is a 24″ x 36″ artwork with a five inch frame.  Sculpture would be of moderate size and not exceed 100 pounds.  Artwork must represent the theme of the show: American Plains.

DEADLINE:  June 4, 2011 for digital entries.

JUROR: New Mexican cowboy artist Robert “SHOOFLY” Shufelt has created graphite drawings that have become an important thread in the fabric of Western Art, earning world wide recognition. His work illuminates the bare bones of an artist’s craft and portrays the physical evidence of his perception. They are celebrations of a dreamer who has allowed his dream to become reality with all its grit and honesty, yet he still finds the work endlessly nteresting and satisfying. He has an artist’s vision of cowboys as they can only be around another cowboy, unposed and unself-conscious. They are men who practice their vision of excellence in whatever they do, leaving it up to the rest of us to determine whether they’re working or playing. These disciples of the “cowboy way” are Shoofly’s top hands and his work is forever honored by their friendship.

I take issues with imposed or even implied limits… even when I shouldn’t.  And, thanks to my food obsession, you won’t be surprised to learn that my weight has gone rather up and not so much down over the years.  I can’t just love art and food and food-themed art.  Oh no, I’d even love to wear art and food (like the dress in this Sarah Illenberger photo pictured left).  Sign me up.  Now.  If you refuse to accept limits, this call is a chance to stretch your talents to include public art AND sculpture.  Give it a shot…

Check out Art Opportunities in Chapel Hill!Experienced artists and artist teams are invited to apply for Sculpture Visions, a juried outdoor sculpture exhibition that will be on view from October 2011 through September 2012 in public spaces in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.  This invitation is extended to all artists regardless of their state of residence and there is no entry fee.  In addition to finished pieces, proposed work will also be considered.

ELIGIBILITY:  Open to all artists regardless of residence.  North Carolina artists are encouraged to apply.  Participating artists must carry liability insurance.

MEDIA: Original three-dimensional artwork of a scale and material suitable for outdoor display.

DEADLINE:  Monday, July 18, 2011, no later than 5:00 pm

Publicly Accessible Art in Chapel Hill is a priority!NOTIFICATION:  Beginning on Friday, August 5, 2011, Chapel Hill Public & Cultural Arts staff will notify artists of the Selection Committee results and will make exhibition arrangements with selected artists.

ENTRY FEE:
None

JUROR:  An Artist Selection Committee comprising representatives of the Chapel Hill Public Arts Commission, the Public & Cultural Arts Office, participating exhibition venues and local artists will review all complete applications and select and site artworks for the Exhibition.  Selections are based on artistic excellence and the goal of exhibiting a variety of media in appropriate sites.

AWARDS:  Selected artists will receive a total honorarium of $1,500 per selected artwork that is intended to cover all expenses, including travel and liability insurance.  This honorarium will be paid in two installments: $750 after the work is installed in October 2011 and $750 after the work has been removed from the site in September of 2012.

I believe that food has a sense of place.  When you eat cotton candy, don’t you think of going to the fair?  When I taste boiled peanuts (Yes, Virginia, they do exist), I am instantly transported to South Carolina.  You have associations of your own, no doubt. This Call is named Sense of Place, but it isn’t a theme.  Maybe it comes from the enormous sense of place felt even through photographs of this beautiful gallery space.  Inspired yet?

Check out this Call for Entries from the Gertrude Herbert Institute of Art in Augusta, GA for the 2011 National Juried Exhbition: A Sense of Place.  The entry fee is low, and once again, the juror is well-documented and happens to be a printmaker, although many media are embraced.  This looks like a winner…

Learn more about the Sense of Place show from GHIA!The Gertrude Herbert Institute of Art (GHIA) is pleased to announce its 2011 juried fine art competition, A Sense of Place.  Open to participants from throughout the United States, this 31st annual event seeks to recognize the outstanding quality and diversity of work being generated by contemporary American artists. 

Founded in 1937 and housed in the historic Nicholas Ware mansion (c. 1818), GHIA is Augusta’s only independent nonprofit visual arts school and gallery.  The Institute serves as a showcase for local, regional, and national artists, offering rotating exhibitions of outstanding contemporary artwork year-round.  In addition, professionally taught studio art classes in a wide variety of media are provided to students of all ages and experience levels.

ELIGIBILITY:  The 2011 juried fine art competition is open to all US artists age 18 and older.  All works must be original, not previously exhibited at the Gertrude Herbert Institute of Art, and completed on or after June 1, 2009.

Learn more about the Gertrude Herbert Institute of Art!JUROR:  Tom Hammond, noted printmaker and professor emeritus at the University of Georgia’s Lamar Dodd School of Art, will serve as juror for A Sense of Place 2011.  Over the past thirty years Hammond has exhibited extensively in solo and group shows throughout the United States and abroad.  His work is held in numerous public and private collections, including the Royal Museum of Art, Antwerp, Belgium; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art, Winston-Salem, North Carolina; and the Mint Museum of Art, Charlotte, North Carolina.  Hammond holds a master of arts from East Carolina University and also studied at Atelier 17 in Paris.

AWARDS: Three cash prizes will be given, including a $750 Best of Show Award and two $500 Juror’s Awards.  Award recipients will be announced at the exhibition’s opening reception on Friday, September 16, 2011.

SALES:  Sales will be encouraged, and all works are assumed to be available for purchase unless designated “Not For Sale” (NFS).  A 35% gallery commission will be charged on sales of all exhibited artwork.

CALL for ENTRIES: Outdoor Sculpture

Sometimes you have to eat outside your comfort zone.  I’m not suggesting you all go out and order brains to go with your eggs at the diner, but I am asking you to live a little.  Ordering food from a menu that you may not like is not earth shattering.  There ARE worse things.  Expand your palate.  You would be amazed at the adrenaline rush I get from discovering a new taste or food experience.  This Call will be a challenge for a few of you closet sculptors out there.  Just take a deep breath and order the brains…

Check out the Call for Entries from Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas for the 16th Annual Outdoor Sculpture Exhibition.  The entry fee is only $25, and having an academic exhibition of this nature on your resume could truly alter the trajectory of your career.  Think carefully about this one…

*Editor’s note:  I know there are a large number of you that sculpt, even if it isn’t your primary media.  If you aren’t sure you are ready to jump into this arena, I want to encourage you to visit a local university campus.  Inevitably they have outdoor sculpture that may inspire you… or at least get you thinking about what that sculpture needs to endure outdoors for a year.  Don’t just dismiss the call… give it a chance.

Outdoor Sculpture

The 16th annual exhibition will be August 2011 to July 2012 and will feature up to five sculptures.  The purpose of the annual outdoor exhibition is to provide the campus with a different selection of sculptures each year.  The exhibition will allow the featured works to be complemented by the natural beauty of the campus and experienced in a casual, unhurried way by visitors, students and faculty.  A brochure will be published which will feature each selected sculpture and a map of a walking tour of the sites.

ELIGIBILITY:   The contest is open to all sculptors internationally 18 years of age and older.  Artists may enter up to three works for consideration.

Learn more about the Outdoor Sculpture Exhibit from Washburn University!MEDIA:  All submitted sculptural work must be of sound design, free standing and suitable for outdoor public display without external support. Steel and concrete pedestals and ground mounts will be provided for each selected entry when required. Only finished works will be considered.

DEADLINE:  Entry forms and CDs must be in the hands of the committee by midnight May 31, 2011.

ENTRY FEE:  $25 non-refundable entrance fee. Please make checks payable to Washburn University, with Campus Beautification Committee written in the notation line.

JUROR:  A professional selection committee will choose up to five sculptures through a process of jury review.  Jurors are not eligible to submit work.

AWARDS:  $1,000 per sculpture paid as an honoraria. Washburn will facilitate purchases of selected artwork without commission.  The exhibition is coordinated by, and funded through, the Campus Beautification Committee of Washburn University.

Clearly, whomever coined the phrase less is more could not have been referring to any form of chocolate.  I’ve heard of moderation.  I understand moderation.  I have experimented with moderation.  I do, begrudgingly, limit my consumption of lots and lots of things, from alcohol to lard and many processed foods–just not chocolate.  This next call for miniature art entries subscribes to the theory that less is more.  Take a look…

19th Annual International Juried Miniature Show

Learn more about the Miniature Show at the Parklane Gallery!Parklane Gallery in Kirkland, WA welcomes miniature artists from across the country and around the world to enter their 19th Annual International Miniature Show, May 3 – June 5.

ELIGIBILITY:  Entries are admitted to the show following strict adherence to the international definition of miniature art:

1. Miniature paintings and sculptures are fine art on a small scale with minute attention to detail which can be enlarged or withstand close inspection without revealing any faults.

2. A representational subject should be no larger than 1/6th of its actual size. Subjects too small for portrayal in 1/6th or smaller than their actual size, may meet the spirit of a miniature if the work meets the above definition of miniature art. Non-representational work such as abstracts or surrealism may meet the spirit of a miniature if all other factors in the definition of a miniature are met.

3. Image size not to exceed 25 square inches (161cm). Sculptures may not exceed 8 inches (20.5cm) in any dimension, including the base.

MEDIA:  Photography, computer-generated art and any art that does not conform to miniature art and hanging guidelines will not be accepted. Artists may view or download the American Miniaturists’ Association Guidebook  for additional information.

ENTRY FEE:  US Funds Only. First entry fee is $25.00 plus $5.00 for each additional entry, up to 7 total entries. Additionally, for mailed entries there is a flat $12 handling fee for return shipment via ordinary parcel post. Shipping fees are refunded if all work is sold. Local artists who hand-carry paintings to the gallery are not required to pay the shipping fee.

Smith is currently teaching at Portland Community College, adult classes at the Walters Cultural Art Center and at Cornell Estates, as well as the Sequoia Gallery in Hillsboro, Oregon.  He has exhibited his works in several International shows including the Cider Painters of America and the Seaside Gallery in North Carolina.  He has won a number of awards from the Cider Painters in past years including 2010.  He has also exhibited at numerous galleries on the Oregon Coast and in the Portland, Oregon areas.

AWARDS:  Jurors will award Best of Show $500, 1st Place $300, 2nd Place $200, PLUS Numerous Sponsor Awards.

Today, I am going to give you a time-tested Southern recipe for success.  Use sugar, not vinegar.  It worked for Mary Poppins; it will work for you.  When sending in your Calls for Entries, your submissions for the $2 Art Contest or submissions for ANY show.  Be professional, but above all else… be nice.  I am going to have to quit saying that I do not usually recommend online exhibits because here is another one.  It is a great exhibit sponsored by a great site (albeit a competitor, of sorts)Consider the benefits.

Learn more about the Art Kudos show sponsored by Artshow.com!Art Kudos is an annual international juried competition that serves to recognize and honor excellence in the visual arts.  Artists who are selected as finalists benefit from world-wide exposure in a year-long online exhibition and have the opportunity to win cash awards for their exemplary work.

ELIGIBILITY: The competition is open to artists anywhere in the world, 18 years of age or older. Publishers, galleries, agents, and collectors may not submit artwork on behalf of artists.

MEDIA: Drawings, paintings, printmaking, photography, digital art, sculpture, installations, wood, glass, ceramics, fiber art and mixed media are eligible. Media not accepted: video/film, wearable art (clothing or jewelry).  All works submitted must be original in design and concept. Artwork must not be copied, in part or wholly, from any published or copyrighted work. Work previously shown in an Art Kudos exhibition is ineligible.  Please do not submit images which would be inappropriate for general audiences.

ENTRY FEE: Artists must submit a completed entry form and pay a non-refundable entry fee of $30 US dollars (check, money order, or PayPal) to submit 3 images. For sculptural or three-dimensional pieces, artists may submit 2 views of each work (for a total of 6 images).

JUROR:  Holly Koons McCullough is the Director of Collections and Exhibitions at the Telfair Museum of Art in Savannah, Georgia.  She began her career at the Telfair in 1996, serving as the museum’s Curator of Education before assuming leadership of the curatorial department. 

Learn more about the Art Kudos show sponsored by Artshow.com!McCullough spearheaded the publication of the Telfair’s first collection catalogue, and has organized exhibitions on subjects ranging from modern silverpoint drawings to contemporary Southeastern art, as well as 19th and early 20th-century American art, including the recent Dutch Utopia exhibition.  She holds a B. A. in English and art history from the University of Georgia and a M.A. in art history from the University of Notre Dame.

AWARDS: Exemplary works will be displayed in a year-long online exhibition at www.artkudos.com beginning August 15th, 2011.  Cash awards totaling $4,400 will be distributed as follows: Best of Show – $1,200; Second Place – $900; Third Place – $750; Founder’s Award of Distinction – $500; (3) Merit Awards – $250 each; (3) Honorable Mentions – $100 each.

COMMISSION: No commissions are taken for sales generated via the exhibition, and works submitted do not have to be available for sale. Sales will be encouraged, however, and artists will have the option to display their contact information beside their images.
