RECIPE for SUCCESS

Like many of you, I frequently “wing it” in the kitchen.  I like the idea of cooking with whatever you have on hand and making adjustments according to taste along the way.  However, while editing a recipe card for The Lodge at Buckberry Creek recently, I realized there is a certain comfort in knowing the exact amount of cream and vanilla in bread pudding.  There is comfort in not guessing the temperature or constantly checking the oven to see if your concoction is ready.  Take comfort in the fact that the Call a well-established show with lots of room for research.  Time to create your own recipe…

MEDIA:   Contemporary original 2D and 3D work in any media, including

2D work should not exceed a framed size of 36” in the longest dimension.  3D work limited to 24” in the longest dimension and not more than 60 lbs.  All work must be original (no reproductions), produced within the last two years and not previously shown at Axis Gallery.

Dena is currently working on Take Up Room on the Floor, a project about physical and virtual embodiment, and a solo exhibition featuring the artist Lutz Bacher. Prior to joining the staff at BAM/PFA, Dena was Curatorial Associate at the Santa Barbara Contemporary Arts Forum, an alternative art space that presented 16–18 exhibitions annually.  She graduated from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago with an M.A. in Art History, Theory, and Criticism.

CALL for ENTRIES: Print Exchange

I love introducing new foods to food newbies.  Anytime you can get someone to take a chance on a new food, your reward comes in the form of their response–often shock, surprise and delight.  There are an extreme few foods that I don’t like, but beets have always been one of them.  When in Arizona recently, I was in the company of someone who ordered a roasted beet salad.  I tried it and LOVED it.  Merry Christmas for me; I now love beets.  Thank you, Kim.  For some of you, this next Call for Entries will introduce you to a whole new media.  Take a chance and figure out how you can adapt your media to this call.

Check out this Call for Entries for the Print Exchange for a Cure to be hosted by the University of Dallas.  The entry fee is low.  You get 10 prints in return, AND your work ends up in a permanent University collection.  Oh, did I mention the funds raised go to a reputable charity?  You couldn’t ask for more.

Learn more about the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society!All printmakers are invited to participate in Print Exchange For A Cure. The purpose of this exchange is to raise funds in order to find a cure for blood cancers and offer financial support to those already battling these diseases.

ELIGIBILITY:  These works do not have to fall under any particular theme. The Paper size must be 7″x10″. The print/image size is open.  12 identical hand-pulled, original prints, with glassine or other archival leafing between each print, cut to match paper size must be submitted.  Each print must be signed and numbered somewhere on the print.  In addition, clearly print artist’s name, title, and media on the back of each print.

MEDIA:  Printmaking including relief, intaglio, lithography, silkscreen, solar, woodblock, or any process other than digital.

DEADLINE:  Prints must be received by May 1, 2011.  But, participants must RSVP by April 17, 2011 by email to: sarahfrancisart@gmail.com.

I have been in Phoenix for a few days opening my own show at Perihelion Arts.  And, I have learned a few things about stereotypes.  I thought I was going to a dust bowl to eat south western food.  Turns out–not so much.  The grass is still green there.  Trees still grow there.  And my favorite restaurant sampling during my trip turned out to be Mediterranean influenced tappas at Pita Jungle.  Go figure.  This next Call gives you a chance to break a few landscape stereotypes.  Take a look…

They are looking for a wide range of styles that push the realms of the modern landscape.  All artwork must have a concentration on the landscape.  The artwork may be traditional landscapes, flowers in the landscape or urban cityscapes; the figure in the landscape or interior exterior artwork that features spaces with landscapes as well as abstract landscapes.  The work may be plein air paintings or straight from the studio, or simply imaginary inspirations that show landscapes from the visual experience of the artist.

Thomas lives and works in New York City where he has his private art studio.

The strangest thing I’ve ever eaten is Fugu, also known as Japanese pufferfish.  What was strange was that I ate it in the USVI at the hands of a Japanese Chef who sold me on eating it BECAUSE #1 it was FREE and #2 it could kill me if prepared improperly.  No meal is worth dying for, folks; ahhh, the stupidity of being eighteen.  Well, clearly, I didn’t die, and unfortunately, I don’t really remember the taste due to my adrenaline-fueled expectation that I could, at any moment, drop dead.  In hindsight, I don’t REALLY know what I ate. Learn more about Saint Spoting online!On the occasion of the bicentenary of the birth of St. Mary Joseph Rossello (1811 – 1880), the Institute of the Daughters of Mercy announces an international contest to bring to light the work of the founder, Mother Mary Joseph, born near Savona, Italy, and proclaimed Saint in 1949 for her incessant actions to assist the needy and promote social integration through the creation of educational and health institutes.

Creative people, such as filmmakers, photographers, cartoonists, graphic and fashion designers, songwriters, musicians, etc… are asked to promote a product which is most definitely unusual.  The challenge for creative artists worldwide is to create advertising for a SAINT, as if it is a product just like any other product in need of an ad campaign.

“WE’RE SEEKING a way to advertise a Saint with an unusual perspective, not necessarily religious, focusing primarily on the historical figure of this great woman, Mother Mary Joseph Rossello .”

ELIGIBILITY:  Open to a variety of creative people around the world (minimum age 16), the competition will be held in two editions, English and Italian.

I propose a TOAST!

Many of the artists that submit their work to be featured have deeply personal connections to their work.  In a perfect world, all artists would have that same connection; however, the world isn’t perfect. Giving a voice to artists who have  something to say has become one of the many great joys of this experience blogging experience.

As I often have to remind myself, choosing a Featured Artist is not about separating the good artwork from the bad. It has become about the challenge of picking from amongst ALL of the good work. Picking the right work at the right moment. Thanks, again, for that.  Like many of you, my life is full of chances to walk the walk, not just talk the talk.

 This month’s artist
walks and talks with an aesthetic of hope and celebration.

Embree’s work is a celebration of acceptance and the happiness that results. The work of Daniel Embree is like a black tie party of self-discovery and getting exactly what you deserve–at least eventually.

FEATURED ARTIST:
Daniel Embree

Though he is an emerging artist in New England, Embree’s pursuits have taken him from his home in Chicago to Utah and Los Angeles before bringing him to Boston, Massachusetts. Embree was raised in a conservative Mormon home in Chicago’s northern suburbs. His parents have always encouraged his love of art.

I didn’t play with ninja turtle action figures as a kid. I made my own action figures out of clay—lizards, dragons, animals, mermaids, and giant insects. And my parents always praised my art. No matter what I was working on, it was always met with encouragement.”  By the time he was eight he was taking classes at the Art Institute of Chicago with students 3x his age. Exposure to great art and information about artists at the Art Institute fueled his own aspirations.

In the northern suburbs, Embree was also fortunate to have access to one of the best art programs in the region; his high school had eight art teachers. Upon graduating, he had a portfolio that showed breadth, depth, and consistency. Art schools across the country were competing for his attention.

Cheers - a monotype by Daniel EmbreeI had decided I was going to an art school in Boston,” Embree recalls, “My dad took me to Boston and there was a school there that really wanted me. I fell in love with the city instantly. That was where I wanted to live.”

But that year, the Massachusetts Supreme Court legalized gay marriage.

 

“It scared me,” said Daniel, “At that time I was desperately trying to hide the fact that I was gay myself.”  Embree was dedicated to the Mormon Church. “I didn’t just want to be an artist, I wanted to be a Mormon artist. I had grown up with lots of exposure to Mormon art, and my mom was always telling me that I could create better Mormon art—I had every intent to do just that.”

Bow Tie - oil on panel by Daniel EmbreeThe fact that I grew up in a Church that did not tolerate homosexuality, went to a school that institutionalized discrimination, underwent reparative “ex-gay” therapy that didn’t work and ended up being very harmful, and was a missionary, makes my turnaround to acceptance and eventually marrying a man all the more powerful.” In 2009, Embree sought to broaden his scope and address the bigger issues inherent in his work. “I realized that really I was interested in how people treat each other,” he wrote in an artist statement, “I wanted to call attention to both our everyday interactions and how we address difficult situations.”

10 years from now I don’t want to be known as a gay artist, or as an artist who questions religion. It is true that I am a gay artist and that I do question religion, but I feel like the issues I bring into my art are bigger than both of those things, and in the future I would like to pursue them in broader ways to connect to a larger audience. Identity, authority, communication, relationships, personal struggle and acceptance are universal tropes that transcend my unique experiences.

Degradation - a monotype by Daniel EmbreeEmbree’s most recent work has such a painterly effect, I had to ask, are you a print maker or a painter?  “My work lately is definitely printmaking, but I don’t consider myself a printmaker. I am an artist, and I love to draw and paint too. I may be working on a body of paintings in the future, or I may be developing other printmaking techniques. I will work in whatever media inspires and motivates me, and fits the message I’m trying to convey.”

I am always fascinated by the motivation of printmakers to tackle a media, that by its very nature, expects perfection.  But, of course, Embree revels in the lack of perfection–strives for it even.  “The process entails rolling ink onto plexi-glass and then manipulating it before printing the remaining image onto paper. He rolls each color of ink individually and repeats the subtractive process with each color. The layers of ink stack on top of each other to create the final image.

Because the layers don’t always line up perfectlythe figures seem to quiver, as if they are moving.

The subtractive process of wiping the ink is also very gestural, and contributes to a sense of movement in the art.  Embree’s most recent work really reinforces the image of the tuxedo.  After such a struggle for acceptance, why use a shining symbol of celebration?   Initially it was inspired by the tuxedos of my wedding, but 1920’s illustrations of men in tuxedos made him connect the image to something broader.

Pleading - a monotype by Daniel EmbreeThe twenties were a time when society was grappling with a lot of the same issues I grappled with. Americans were dealing with the restrictions of prohibition. They were also coming out of the stuffy Victorian era with a lot of social rules and pressures. Despite all of this, they were discovering new cultural freedoms—questioning gender inequities and roles, social boundaries & authority.  They celebrated the end of struggle after World War I, and the rise of new technologies and prosperity. In a similar way, I am at a time in my life where things are working out and just starting to take off.  By bringing all of that into my work, I think I can share what I feel in a way that can be read by a larger audience.

Shamefaced - a monotype triptych by Daniel EmbreeBut what about the food?  This IS, afterall, a food-themed art blog. I don’t know if I just attract foodie-artists or artistic foodies. Or, maybe artists just think that food is the way to my heart because most of the artists I interview have phenomenal culinary tastes. When Embree way asked? Diplomacy.

“I love too many foods to have a favorite, but I will pick out some flavors that I like. I especially love dishes that combine unlikely or contrasting flavors together. I love the mix of bitter-sweet lingonberries with savory meatballs or sweet mango with salty coconut sticky rice. I’m a sucker for everything bitter or tart—like dark chocolate, cranberry, or grapefruit.”  And he doesn’t snack. I am suspicious of non-snacker. *snicker*

CALL for ENTRIES: Postmarked 2011

Learn more about the 7th Annual Mail Art Show!For many years, inmates from around the country wrote to the Prison Library Project and they were amazed by the artwork that accompanied requests for books. These beautiful illustrations were their inspiration for a mail art exhibition and fundraiser.

Postmarked was developed seven years ago for the Claremont Forum’s Prison Library Project, which sends books free to prisoners in the U.S. upon their request. Providing education and opportunity to learn about mail art, view new and established mail artists’ works, and to participate in the experience of creating and sending mail art. Now in its 7th year, this exhibition is one of the largest in California.

MEDIA: Please send submissions of mail art of any size and medium to: Postmarked 2011, Prison Library Project, 112 Harvard #303, Claremont CA 91711. ONLY the side with the official USPS Postmark/barcode will be displayed. Your mail art may be painted, stamped, collaged, printed, and/or otherwise decorated or constructed. It may be any shape and size that will go through the mail and receive an official postmark.

Your submission may get worn or torn through the mail, but the handling process is an important part of the theme. Only the side with the postmark can be displayed, due to space limitations, but the art doesn’t have to be limited to that side. You may include any message inside the envelope, which will be opened only by the person who purchases the art envelope. You may submit more than one piece… and begin sending now!

Nearly one percent of American adults are incarcerated, the highest rate in the world, but many prisoners have little access to books or educational material. They face substantial barriers and are cut off from family and friends on the outside. While some prisons have libraries, many do not. Of those that do, access and selection can be extremely limited. Usually, prisoners are not allowed to receive books from friends or family. Thus, programs like ours are one of the few options available to these individuals.” –from the PLP website.

I absolutely love heirloom vegetables. I love the idea of preserving the genetic “bloodline,” if you will, of a fruit or vegetable easily distinguished from the genetically modified, hot-house varieties we are all used to eating.  However, I can admit that sometimes a tomato is just a tomato.  This next call recognizes that sometimes art is just art.  They don’t want your CV, resume, statment or anything else–just your art.

ENTRY FEE: Artists must submit a completed entry form and pay a non-refundable entry fee of $30 US dollars (check, money order, or PayPal) to submit 3 images. For sculptural or three-dimensional pieces, artists may submit 2 views of each work (for a total of 6 images).

JUROR:  Holly Koons McCullough is the Director of Collections and Exhibitions at the Telfair Museum of Art in Savannah, Georgia.  She began her career at the Telfair in 1996, serving as the museum’s Curator of Education before assuming leadership of the curatorial department. 

Learn more about the Art Kudos show sponsored by Artshow.com!McCullough spearheaded the publication of the Telfair’s first collection catalogue, and has organized exhibitions on subjects ranging from modern silverpoint drawings to contemporary Southeastern art, as well as 19th and early 20th-century American art, including the recent Dutch Utopia exhibition.  She holds a B. A. in English and art history from the University of Georgia and a M.A. in art history from the University of Notre Dame.

AWARDS: Exemplary works will be displayed in a year-long online exhibition at www.artkudos.com beginning August 15th, 2011.  Cash awards totaling $4,400 will be distributed as follows: Best of Show – $1,200; Second Place – $900; Third Place – $750; Founder’s Award of Distinction – $500; (3) Merit Awards – $250 each; (3) Honorable Mentions – $100 each.

COMMISSION: No commissions are taken for sales generated via the exhibition, and works submitted do not have to be available for sale. Sales will be encouraged, however, and artists will have the option to display their contact information beside their images.

I want to grow my own food.  I WANT to, but when the day starts, I pull on my stilettos and head off to my air-conditioned office where all attempts at growing house plants have withered and died. 

There are no secret overalls and garden clogs in my closet. 

 

I don’t even have fruit trees in  my yard.  My husband and I are thinking of building a shipping container house; maybe I should look for property with fruit trees.  Stilettos AND home-grown food.  If you don’t have a green thumb, this Call will let you take inspiration from nature even if you didn’t grow it.

ENTRY FEE:  No more than 5 entries may be submitted per artist. 1 entry $15; each additional entry is $5. Entry fees are non-refundable.

SALES:  K.A.S. Gallery will add a 30% commission fee to the selling price of an art piece. Should your work sell, K.A.S. will retain a 30% commission. K.A.S. will collect sales tax from buyer and pay KY State sales tax.

I am a collector at heart.  I enjoy having odd jars of condiments just a cabinet door away.  I love having kitchen gadgets and utensils that I only have reason to use once a year.  But what I most love to collect is art.  I have art stuffed in every nook and cranny of my house. 

As I type, I am watched by a little carving of late artist Bob Ross (click here for image) who came in his own little cigarette box marked “Bob in a Box” part of a series by Bob Snead that included Bob Villa, Bob Dobb and more, whom I met Founder of Redux.  This next show gives YOU a chance to be both collected and a collector!

Check out this Call for Entries from the Rochester Contemporary Art Center (RoCo) for the 6x6x2011 Global.  There is no entry fee for up to 10 submissions.  This show is all hung, looks great on your resume, and benefits a great member of the art community!

Click to Learn More about 6x6x2011!Help RoCo build an exhibition of artworks from ALL 50 US States and more countries than last year. Please invite everyone you know to send their artwork early.  6×6 began as a small fundraising exhibition, but has grown into an international art phenomenon. 

Last year over 5,000 artworks
from 43 US States & 22 Countries were entered in this
astounding exhibition!

 

6x6x2011: Global is the fourth exhibition of thousands of original artworks, made and donated by celebrities, international and local artists, designers, college students, youths, and YOU.  Each artwork will be 6×6 square inches and signed only on the back, to be exhibited anonymously.  All artworks will be for sale to the public for $20 each to benefit Rochester Contemporary Art Center (RoCo).  Artist names will be revealed to the buyer only upon purchase and all works will remain on display for the duration of the exhibition
