12 12 GALLERY announces an open call to all artists creating works on paper, the International Juried Exhibition of Works on Paper 2012. The exhibition juror, Richard Waller, Executive Director of University Museums, University of Richmond, will award up to $1000 in cash prizes.

ELIGIBILITY: All artists age 18+

MEDIA: Works on paper to be considered for the exhibition. Eligible works incorporate the use of any medium on paper, including analog and digital photography.

DEADLINE: May 4, 2012

NOTIFICATION: May 20, 2012

ENTRY FEE: $25 (US)for 3 images. Add’l images $5 (US) each, for up to 5 total

JUROR: Richard Waller is the Executive Director of University Museums, including the Harnett Museum, the Joel and Lila Harnett Print Study Center and the Lora Robins Gallery of Design from Nature. He received his master of fine arts degree from Yale University after graduating from Mankato State University in Minnesota. He also received a master’s degree from the University of Wisconsin in Madison.

Before joining the University in 1990, Waller worked at the Brooklyn Museum of Art for 19 years and taught at New York’s Parsons School of Design. He has been a curator, judge and organizer of many historical and contemporary art exhibitions and has written extensively on visual art.

AWARDS: Cash prizes up to $1000 will be awarded solely at the discretion of the exhibition juror. Recognition of work by Professor Waller may also be designated to the extent he deems appropriate. These designations may not include a cash prize.

Secrets and Mysteries

If your audience is standing indefinitely motionless, entranced by the possibilities in your work and in devising an infinitude of scenarios and alternate endings, then you’ve made an image that will inspire gallery visitors with the beauty of ambiguity, mystery and perplexity.

Photographers created images that baffled the viewer as early at the 1860s; Henry Peach Robinson was a pioneer of combination printing, creating the illusory photo montage long before there was Photoshop. Darkroom Gallery wants to see your images that lead the imagination to the edge, encouraging the mind to leap. Multiple exposures, constructions, staged, anything goes, just leave them guessing.

ELIGIBILITY: Entrants must be at least 18 years old. If younger, you must have a legal guardian make the submission for you.

JUROR: Opening in Chicago in 1987, the Catherine Edelman Gallery was quick to become one of the Midwest’s leading fine art photography galleries. Director and Owner Catherine Edelman has “a patient eye for artists, tracking their progress [and] representing mature photographers who deliver consistent, quality work, regardless of age or exposure.” Edelman has upheld her original promise to feature prominent Contemporary photographers alongside new and emerging talent, supplying her audience with a refreshing breadth of both subject matter and photographic technique.

Working closely with magazine editors and book publishers, the Catherine Edelman Gallery co-published several monographs and collections, including: Written in Memory: Portraits of the Holocaust, photographs by Jeffrey Wolin (Chronicle Books), Pressure, photographs by Joe Ziolkowski (Pohlmann Press), What Were You Thinking (celebrating the 15 year anniversary of the gallery in association with Paper Mirror Press) and Iron Beauties, a monograph on the work of Chicago photographer Michelle Keim, published by Nazraeli Press.

Catherine Edelman is an executive board member of the Association of International Photography Art Dealers and President of the Chicago Art Dealers Association. In addition to hosting Saturday Morning educational seminars for her community, Edelman recently opened an online gallery of underrepresented local artists, titled “The Chicago Project.”

AWARDS: All selected entries are exhibited in the gallery and included in a full color exhibit catalog. Juror’s Choice receives a 20×35″ vinyl exhibit banner featuring their image. People’s Choice gains free entry into a future exhibit.

SALES: Darkroom offers free matting and framing of accepted entries for the duration of each of their exhibitions, subject to standard sizes. A portfolio allows the photographer to explore the complexities of their subject, and provide context that gives it richness and meaning that is more than the sum of its parts. The Kiernan Gallery is pleased to announce its first annual portfolio showcase.

JUROR: For over twenty years Dan Estabrook has been making contemporary art using a variety of 19th-century photographic techniques. Recently he has focused on the earliest paper photographs – calotype negatives and salted paper prints – as sources for hand manipulation with paint and pencil. He balances his interests in photography with forays into sculpture, painting, drawing, and other works on paper.

Dan has exhibited widely and has received several awards, including an Artist’s Fellowship from the National Endowment of the Arts in 1994. He is also the subject of a recent documentary by Anthropy Arts. He is represented by the Catherine Edelman Gallery in Chicago, Daniel Cooney Fine Art in New York and Jackson Fine Arts in Atlanta. He lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.

AWARDS: Eight photographers will be selected for the exhibition, split into two shows. Four will show at a time. The first four will show from June 6 – July 14, the other four will show from July 18 – August 25 (groups to be determined by the gallery).

SALES: Artists exhibiting at the gallery may offer their work for sale. The Kiernan Gallery retains 30% of the sale price as commission.

Like many of you, I frequently “wing it” in the kitchen. I like the idea of cooking with whatever you have on hand and making adjustments according to taste along the way. However, while editing a recipe for a friend recently, I realized there is a certain comfort in knowing the exact amount of salt to put in the potatoes. There is comfort in not guessing the temperature or constantly checking the oven to see if your famous apple pie is ready. JUROR: Apsara DiQuinzio is the assistant curator of painting and sculpture at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, where she most recently organized the thematic group show The Air We Breathe and edited the related book. Over the last several years she has curated solo exhibitions with Vincent Fecteau, Mai-Thu Perret, R.H. Quaytman, Felix Schramm, and Paul Sietsema.

Formerly DiQuinzio worked at the Whitney Museum of American Art. In 2010 she was awarded a curatorial research fellowship by the Andy Warhol Foundation for Visual Arts to develop an international group exhibition in the fall of 2012 at SFMOMA.

DiQuinzio has an M.A. in Modern Art History, Theory, and Criticism from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and a B.A. from Colgate University.

CHICKEN, anyone?

Fast food is fast, but I sometimes wonder about the food part. Like you, I am frequently too busy to cook or even shop for food for that matter. But, I have found a lazy alternative to fast food, the rotisserie chicken. In my version, I have it over romaine with a little Parmesan, a few croutons, Italian dressing and a couple of pepperoncini on the side. This next Call for Entries, also has a contingency plan for running out of time… the online entry. You have plenty of time until this deadline, but just in case…

Check out this Call for Entries for the 8th Art of Photography Show which is being held at the San Diego Art Institute this year. The cost to enter is about average; however, last year, 1700 people attended the reception, and the award are spectacular. That’s a bargain…

The Art of Photography 2012

The Art of Photography Show is an established and critical force in the world of contemporary photography. Now in its 8th year, this presentation of world class photography is truly exquisite. The show provides tangible benefits to artists trying to break into the public eye. This well thought out international exhibition provides value to artists at every turn, from first-rate viewing in the judging process to exhibition and publication opportunities, photo industry connections and monetary awards.

JUROR: Julian Cox joined the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco in September 2010 as its Founding Curator of Photography and Chief Curator at the de Young Museum. After holding curatorial positions at the National Library of Wales and the National Museum of Photography, Film & Television, Bradford, England, he moved to the United States in 1992 to pursue his career here. For more than decade he worked with the photographs collection at the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles, and then spent five years leading the photography program at the High Museum of Art, Atlanta. Cox has organized numerous exhibitions on subjects ranging from the dawn of photography’s invention in Europe in the 19th century, to contemporary practice in the United States. He has been a reviewer for the Atlanta Photography Group; Atlanta Celebrates Photography; Palm Springs Photo Festival and Photo NOLA.

Cox is the co-author, with Colin Ford, of the critically acclaimed publication Julia Margaret Cameron: The Complete Photographs (2003), the first catalogue raisonné produced of the work of a photographer. He is the author of many scholarly articles and several books. His recent publications include The Portrait Unbound: Photographs by Robert Weingarten (2010), Road to Freedom: Photographs of the Civil Rights Movement, 1956-1968 (2008), and Harry Callahan: Eleanor (2007).

AWARDS: $2,000 1st Place Award, $1,600 2nd Place Award, $1,200 3rd Place Award, $ 800 4th Place Award, and eleven (11) $400 Honorable Mention Awards.

Her work is in several public collections including the Metropolitan Museum NY and the Baltimore Museum. Craig was a recipient of the 2008-9 Pollock-Krasner Award as well as several awards in the including the 1951 National Association of Women Artists, Mary Karasick Portrait Prize.

FOOD MEMORIES

Frequently, the sense memory I have with food OFTEN brings me to a specific place. Antipasti reminds me of romantic living room picnics with my sweet husband that have become the tradition of our marriage. Boiled peanuts remind me of combing the flea markets of South Carolina for hidden treasures. Soft, doughy pretzels remind me of laughing hysterically with my kid on the Scrambler at the State Fair. The Gertrude Herbert Institute of Art is pleased to announce its 2012 juried fine art competition, A Sense of Place. Open to participants from throughout the United States, this thirty-second annual event seeks to recognize the outstanding quality and diversity of work being generated by contemporary American artists.

Founded in 1937 and housed in the historic Nicholas Ware mansion (c. 1818), the Gertrude Herbert Institute of Art (GHIA) is Augusta’s only independent nonprofit visual arts school and gallery. The Institute serves as a showcase for local, regional, and national artists, offering rotating exhibitions of outstanding contemporary artwork year-round. In addition, professionally taught studio art classes in a wide variety of media are provided to students of all ages and experience levels.

ELIGIBILITY: All US artists age 18+

MEDIA: Categories: painting, drawing, mixed media, printmaking, ceramics, sculpture, and photography. *Editor’s Note: “A Sense of Place” is not the theme.

JUROR: Nancy Solomon is the director of Solomon Projects, a critically acclaimed art gallery based in Atlanta, Georgia, dedicated to new and experimental solo presentations by emerging and mid-career artists. She attended Columbia University’s Barnard College in New York, receiving her bachelor of arts degree in art history.

Prior to her move to Atlanta, Ms. Solomon worked at the Lisson Gallery in London. In 1998, she was the recipient of the Georgia Women in the Arts Award, awarded by the State of Georgia.

From 1997 through 1999, Ms. Solomon was a board member of Art Papers and served on its Editorial Advisory Board in 2004–2005. Additional prior experience in the visual arts field includes working with modern and contemporary masters in Paris, as well as with Gallery Moos in New York City. Ms. Solomon grew up in France and was educated in Geneva, Switzerland.

AWARDS: Three cash prizes will be given, including a $750 Best of Show Award and two $500 Juror’s Awards. At the juror’s discretion, additional non-cash Honorable Mention awards may also be presented.

SALES: Sales will be encouraged, and all works are assumed to be available for purchase unless designated “Not For Sale” (NFS). A 35% gallery commission will be charged on sales of all exhibited artwork.

So I was watching a “hot dish” competition on Bizarre Foods America the other day. (A “hot dish” competition is sort of like a casserole contest.) This particular contest was being held in a mid-western town’s VFW or American Legion Hall. Many of the contestants sported beehive hairdos, mom jeans and gingham aprons. Then out of nowhere, a woman in Bermuda shorts whipped out a BLOW TORCH to brown the top of her tater tot casserole like it was creme brulée–proof positive that culinary technology and techniques have made it to every fishbowl, no matter how small. This next Call wants to see your techy stuff on a tiny scale or large, your choice. How big is your fishbowl?

Macro/Micro:
Photographic Extremes

This exhibit is about two photographic extremes, regardless of what you call them: Micro Photography (AKA Macro Photography) and Macrophotography (AKA Wide Angle Photography). The Darkroom Gallery wants to see your best work using these photographic tools.

Look it up, Macro (from Greek prefix “makros-” meaning “large”). Most sciences or areas of study use this prefix as defined. Macroeconomics, for example: “dealing with the behavior of the whole economy”. Microeconomics: “study of the behavior of small economic units, such as that of individual consumers, opposite of macroeconomics”. So what happened with Photography? Commonly, photographers call images of things small and extreme closeups, Macro Photography.

What then is Microphotography? Interestingly, Nikon uses the term Micro for it’s close focusing lenses, but not Canon. So, even the manufacturers don’t agree.

Microphotography reveals a world unseen by the naked eye. It often exposes patterns and designs that create sublime abstract images. Macrophotography gathers a view often larger and grander than can be gathered with the human eye. Both introduce distortions either through lens characteristics or stitching construction techniques that are creative tools used to produce these distinctive images.

ELIGIBILITY: Entrants must be at least 18 years old. If younger, you must have a legal guardian make the submission for you.

JUROR: Science photographer Felice Frankel is a research scientist in the Center for Materials Science and Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Working in collaboration with scientists and engineers, Felice’s images have been published in over 200 journal articles and/or covers and various other publications for general audiences such as National Geographic, Nature, Science, Angewandte Chemie, Advanced Materials, Materials Today, PNAS, Newsweek, Scientific American, Discover Magazine, and New Scientist among others.

She is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and has received awards and grants from the National Science Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, the Guggenheim Foundation, the Camille and Henry Dreyfus Foundation, the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts, among others. Felice was a Loeb Fellow at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design and was awarded the Distinguished Alumna Award at Brooklyn College, CUNY and the Lennart Nilsson Award for Scientific Photography.

Felice founded the Image and Meaning workshops and conferences whose purpose is to develop new approaches to promoting the public understanding of science through visual expression.

She and her work have been profiled in the New York Times, Wired, LIFE Magazine, the Boston Globe, the Washington Post, the Chronicle of Higher Education, National Public Radio’s All Things Considered, Science Friday, the Christian Science Monitor and various European publications. She exhibits throughout the United States and in Europe. Her limited edition photographs are included in a number of corporate and private collections.

AWARDS: All selected entries are exhibited in the gallery and included in a full color exhibit catalog. Juror’s Choice receives a 20×35″ vinyl exhibit banner featuring their image. People’s Choice gains free entry into a future exhibit.

SALES: Darkroom offers free matting and framing of accepted entries for the duration of each of their exhibitions, subject to standard sizes. Photographers set their own prices if they wish to sell their work and retain all rights to their photographs. For commission details, go to the bottom of the Submisssion Rules page!
