CALL for ENTRIES: A Show of Heads 2018

Learn more about A Show of Heads from the Limner Gallery!

brain FOOD

There are lots of foods I eat that give others pause.  There are lots of foods that I have tried once but will never consume again.  Then there are foods that make no sense to me, at all.  When I was in college, my favorite 24 hour diner was legendary.  It had been open since the 1930s, and because it was located just steps from the state capitol, the stories that built its reputation were also legendary.  The menu was populated with standard fare like over-easy eggs and BLTs, but among the meat options included were souse, head cheese & calf brains.  Really?  Did any of those things come in such high demand that they warranted permanent menu status? *shudder*  I’ll keep my brain associations within my own head, thank-you-very-much.  Speaking of heads, take a look…

FEEDING the anxiety

I’m notoriously an emotional eater.  I find comfort in food, and I know it is a slippery slope. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve quit trying to fight the desire to eat for comfort and have just tried to make better “comfortable” choices.  Politics being what they are in the U.S. would understandably drive anyone to drink, but I have resorted to guava.  Guava is my tropical fruit therapy, and then, of course, there’s art.  This next Call wants your political art.  Take a look…

something SALAD

For most people, the concept of salad is abstract at best –egg, chef, Caesar, Cobb, chicken.  Something loosely defined by intent but not really definable.  You can’t order a salad & know what you’ll get because everyone brings their own meaning to “salad”.  Lately it always means spinach, mushrooms, strawberries & feta, but my mother jumps directly to the three bean variety.  This next Call is waiting for what you will bring to abstract.  Don’t miss your chance…

Food is like clothing, trends come & go, but the classics always look the same.  I went to culinary school two decades ago & the classics were lamb chops, Béarnaise butter, tourné cut potatoes & asparagus.  I went to dinner two weeks ago, and the same dishes appeared on the menu with a tweak & a twist.  Things remain, repeat & refine.  This next Call has three decades of history and is still going strong.  Take a look…

I sent my husband to the farmers market for turnips & beets.  He came home with honey & peaches.  I suppose it isn’t like going to the grocery where there are a proscribed list of possible foods you will encounter.  Instead, the farmers market offers an almost endless range of possibilities within your growth climate, lending itself to surprises, naturally.  This next Call is hoping for those same possibilities.  Send them a peach…

Tired of broccoli?  Me too.  Tired of kale?  I think everyone is.  What about purslane?  It is a succulent herb that has a touch of a bitter overtone.  It is technically a weed, but that just means it is easy to grow.  If you don’t have it naturally growing in your yard, you can buy the seeds on the cheap.  Try it in stir fry or salads.  It might add a new twist on the green portion of your meal.  This next Call wants to how your work is informed by all things green.  And someone will win a $500 grant as well…

sugar or cake CONES?

I am addicted to cones of vanilla ice cream dipped in chocolate.  More accurately, I love the chocolate dipped diary, not the cone, but I have great respect for the edible nature of this delivery system.  Why don’t we have more edible packaging?  I don’t know either.  (BTW, no, I do NOT want to know about the probably-scary, chemical explanation for why dipping chocolate hardens.  Ignorance is bliss.)  This next Call is all about cones (and rods), but of the photoreceptor quality.  I’ve shown work at this venue, and I can’t wait to see this show…
