My grocery bill is absurd. I’m not having dinners of foie gras & truffles. In fact, most of our meals are vegetable laden. I try to stop by the farmers market at my local apple orchard. This week, it was $25 for apples, onions, 4 sweet potatoes, 3 bell peppers & 2 eggplant. As you might imagine, I then proceeded to spend a fortune at the grocery store to supplement my farmers market finds. I have a family of only three people + my four-legged child. I buy in-season, cost-conscious items. I consider myself a master food shopper, and I can barely hang on to a healthy menu. JUROR: Nandini Makrandi is Chief Curator & Curator of Contemporary Art at the Hunter Museum of American Art. She has been with the Hunter since 2004 and has originated over 30 original exhibitions in that time, including three nationally touring exhibition projects. Previously, Makrandi taught art history at the UT, Chattanooga and served as a curator at the Knoxville Museum of Art. Makrandi has a M.A. from Texas Tech & a B.A. from Mercer in GA, and participates regularly in the region as a juror, guest curator & speaker.

AWARDS: Cash awards totaling $4,000 will be presented at the exhibit’s Opening Reception –Best in Show, 2nd Place, 3rd Place, 2 Merit awards & an award from Fast Frame. All accepted artists are encouraged to attend the Awards Reception at The Emporium Center.

My chicken stock has been a little off lately. I make chicken stock at least once a week, and I thought I was doing everything the same, but all the dishes I make with stock of been a little off as well. The chicken soup & casseroles & pasta dishes were all missing something. Peppercorns. I ran out of peppercorns and used fresh ground pepper in their place. JUROR: A native of the South Bronx, Dr. Leslie King-Hammond was educated in the New York City public education system. After attending City University of New York and Johns Hopkins University she began teaching art history at Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA). Later appointed Dean of Graduate Studies she retired in 2008 as Graduate Dean Emerita. During her storied career King-Hammond has served as the Founding Director of the new Center for Race and Culture at MICA, received a number of Mellon Grants, and a Trustee Award for Excellence in Teaching.
Other honors include the Reginald F. Lewis Museum of Maryland African American History & Culture’s Chairperson of the Board and Chairperson of the Collections and Exhibits Committee; appointment to the Board of the Creative Alliance for the Artists, Baltimore, MD.; and project director for Ford/Phillip Morris Fellowships for Artists of Color at MICA (including Yale School of Art, School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Cranbrook Academy of Art, and California Institute of the Arts).

AWARDS: MTSU Arts Award $1,000, Dean’s Award $500, Department of Art Award $200, Award of Excellence $100, Up to 3 Awards of Merit $50 each.

I have plastic envy. Hoop houses are sprouting up all over town as pre-planning for chances of upcoming frost. Last year our first snow came in October. Locally lots of folks protect their late Summer plantings from possible early frost while also giving them space to start seedlings in colder weather. Once the ground is frozen, installation becomes a much more complicated project. My house hangs on the side of a mountain. The only flat space I have for a hoop house is my gravel driveway, ha. My whole house smells like peppers & basil at the moment. A recent Saturday trip to the farmers market ended with a huge surplus of these staples, but to prevent loss, I am dehydrated both. Then I will grind, chop or crumble most of these into a smaller form for storage and use this winter. This next Call could be an outlet for new work, but it could be an excellent way to compact and move out studies or older work. I encourage you to contemplate cutting down your work. MEDIA: Works on paper that will fit in a 9×12 envelope. Artworks may be any size, but they MUST fit in a 9” x 12” envelope to be mailed, although they may be folded, 3D or multi-part. More than one work may be mailed in each envelope. Acceptable media includes photography, drawing, painting, printmaking, collage, mixed media, cast or folded paperworks, artist books or digital prints. *A few brave souls out there might consider cutting larger work down to create more abstract work.

CURATOR: John Matkowsky runs the Los Angeles drkrm, a black & white darkroom as well as exhibit space that specializes in more under-the-radar, counterculture presentations that support documentary & photo-journalistic work & alternative photographic processes. The national magazine, Juxtapoz, has called Matkowsky a “visionary” for his edgy, dramatic showcases.

AWARDS: Winner receives review by curator plus online exhibition (front page of site for a month, then archived). Winner also receives Q&A making a substantial PR piece for the photographer. In addition 15% of all artist fees go to the curator’s favorite charity, the Soi Dog Foundation, as well as the first place winner’s favorite charities. There is a 2nd place winner and 2 honorable mentions which will show their bio and images archived on our site.

My family enjoys participating in cultural celebrations from around the world. None of us grew up with any sort of specific cultural traditions aside from spaghetti night or BBQ on Father’s Day. So each year we adopt Chinese New Year, Oktoberfest & even the Day of the Dead as our very own. Chinese New Year gives us an extra 6 weeks or so to make plans for the upcoming year (Yes, we really are late to everything –even making resolutions, ha). Dia de Los Muertos offers us a time to tell stories about those we’ve lost. I’ve lost a lot of people lately, and it is a great comfort to take time to celebrate them.
