Food challenges abound: Meatless Monday, Veggie Thursday & others. I full believe in $5 Friday. It doesn’t have to be Friday, but, well, alliteration. I like the creativity required to feed my family of three for $5. My “go to” used to be chicken quarters (75¢/lb), but chicken that cheap can be scary. But, I can serve the best of eggs as protein, grass-fed, free-range, antibiotic free FRESH eggs and still have plenty of cash left over to round out the meal. Holiday meals at our house are inevitably eaten around a floral centerpiece, or more commonly, a potted plant. But, for love of our dogs, there hasn’t been a poinsettia in our home for a couple of decades. Instead, we keep a Christmas cactus or two year round. The only rule of thumb is to treat them badly. My mother didn’t water hers for a year, left it on the front porch during multiple early cold snaps. She pulled it in & watered it mid-October, and it was gorgeous just in time for Thanksgiving. So, as a rule, don’t eat your floral holiday centerpieces, but a Christmas cactus might protect your pets if they get the munchies. I’m not really a milk drinker –never have been. I use it in cooking and to make cheese, but by the glass is uncommon. It has in recent years, though, become helpful in the winter months. In the winter, my writing for AAAD & creating my own art (both visual & performing) keeps me indoors most of the time. When winter hits, my mood often turns darker. But, instead of pizza & ice cream (okay, sometimes instead), I try to reset my nutritional routine. I am always surprised how unexpected foods can trigger a change in mood. Healthy fats like that found in fish, nuts, avocado are shown to improve brain health while vitamin D found in dairy (and non-dairy mylks) are a big help if I have been stuck indoors. Spicy foods offer anti-inflammatory benefits that help with circulation and my energy levels. Being a great cook, is an interdisciplinary skill. I know a handful of people who claim to be so uncreative that they “can’t draw a stick figure”. Clearly, creativity is not measured by the quality of your stick figures. But I am willing to accept those sorts of self-assessments –unless they come from a great cook. Whether it is puppet construction, theater, set design, or painting, one creative process influences another.

Dan Dez has been developing games since 2002. After receiving his BFA in Computer Animation at Ringling School of Art and Design, he started his game development career which has spanned around the country and across PS2, GameCube, XBOX, Xbox360, PS3, iOS, Android and PC. He is now and independent game developer who has always had an appreciation for Fine Arts. After graduating from RISD, Sean Hilts worked as freelance Graphic Designer, founded The Brothers Hilts, an illustration/design team, and is currently a Senior User Experience Consultant.

I find myself craving carpaccio lately, but I’m not much of a meat eater anymore. Carpaccio is typically made using the highest quality, thinly sliced beef sirloin then served raw. But in recent years, the same term is now used in reference to the same treatment of fish and vegetables. The only unifying factor is the dressing of raw ingredients with lemon and olive oil, salt and pepper. Done correctly, the balance of ingredients in like a delicate collage. Food for women apparently exists. Well, it isn’t food exclusively for women, but I discovered there are a few foods that are even better for you if you’re female– including one of my favorites, flaxseed. Not using flaxseed? I love ground flaxseed as a substitute for bread crumbs on top of casseroles. I mix flaxseed with a little Parmesan and a mist of olive oil and return the casserole to the oven until it just starts to brown. It is almost time for winter cabbage. I am always grateful to those of our local farmers that have the forethought to plant cold-hardy cabbage in late August so that we can have at least one locally-grown GREEN veggie this winter. It is neither a high-yield crop, nor is it a high profit crop. Aside from how delightful it tastes in Irish stew, I am fascinated by the other worldliness of cabbage layers. If you compare the outside leaves to the interior leaves of the cabbage head, you would assume one was some sort of alien mutant version of the other with changes in color, texture AND taste. Kevin C. Reaves has a B.F.A and an M.F.A. with a concentration in Jewelry and Metals. He is a traditional sculptor, metalsmith, digital modeler and an avid game and toy designer. Kevin is inspired by retro science fiction, Japanese monster movies, toys, games and 80’s pop culture. His designs have a strong geometric aesthetic and they often deal with social issues and human conditions that primarily focus on Western civilization.

JUROR: After a career as a New York Fashion Editor and working along side the greats of fashion photography, Aline Smithson discovered the family Rolleiflex and never looked back. Now represented by galleries in the U.S. and Europe and published throughout the world, Aline continues to create her award-winning photography with humor, compassion, and a 50-year-old camera.

Aline has curated and juried exhibitions for a number of galleries, organizations, and on-line magazines, including Review Santa Fe, Critical Mass, Flash Forward, and the Griffin Museum. In addition, she is a reviewer and educator at many photo festivals across the United States. In 2014, Aline received the Excellence in Teaching Award from CENTER, but she considers her children her greatest achievement. She is a founding member of the Six Shooters Collective and is currently teaching at the Los Angeles Center of Photography, the Santa Fe Photo Workshops, and the Maine Media Workshops. Aline lives and works in Los Angeles.
