CALL for ENTRIES: It’s Political – 2018

Learn more about the 2018 It's Political exhibit from Las Laguna Gallery!

what TO EAT, or what NOT TO EAT

Famous words, “No politics, let’s eat.”  FOOD IS POLITICAL.  In the United States, for example, our Department of Agriculture suggests that half our diet be composed of fruits & vegetable (great); however, more than 60% of agricultural subsidies go to corn & other grains which are primarily consumed by the commercial meat & poultry industries.  Do you know how much of those subsidy funds go to growers of fruits & vegetables? Less than 1%.  Food is political.  This next Call wants to know what YOU have to say about today’s political climate, food politics optional, of course.  Take a look…

Check out this Call for Entries from the Las Laguna Gallery (Laguna Beach, CA) for It’s Political! 2018, an exhibit inspired by politics in today’s world. $35 entry & 35% commission. Don’t miss this opportunity…

the PRICKLY truth

Sometimes you just have to be open to trying new foods.  So, when handed a nopales taco by a friend, I thought “why not”.  Nopal is a common name for the pad of a cacti and sometimes refers to the prickly pear fruit as well.  Fleshy & a little tart, the nopales in my taco really worked as a meat substitute.  I’m not sure why I don’t eat more cacti. To what are you open? This next call is open to any thematic content.  Investigate the opportunity…

COOK for me

Why are there so few female chefs and so many female cooks?  It turns out that professional cooking jobs are like so many other jobs –ruled by gender stereotypes.  I lived most of my pre-adolescence without a residential female figure, and I was always taught it was my job to learn to cook.  I cooked most of my familial meals from age 5, yes 5, to age 15.  Imagine my surprise when I got to cooking school and found myself the only woman in my class.  This next call explores masculinity. have some CANDY

My grandmother was addicted to candy. She would stock up near the candy-laden holidays Easter, Halloween and Christmas, and try to get it eaten at a faster rate than it would solidify in a solid block of colored sugar.  So, it wasn’t her sweet grandmotherly instinct to push candy on me at every occasion; it was stock rotation, ha. After she died, I could have started a candy store with the volume of candy in her kitchen. brain FOOD

There are lots of foods I eat that give others pause.  There are lots of foods that I have tried once but will never consume again.  Then there are foods that make no sense to me, at all.  When I was in college, my favorite 24 hour diner was legendary.  It had been open since the 1930s, and because it was located just steps from the state capitol, the stories that built its reputation were also legendary.  The menu was populated with standard fare like over-easy eggs and BLTs, but among the meat options included were souse, head cheese & calf brains.  Really?  Did any of those things come in such high demand that they warranted permanent menu status? *shudder*  I’ll keep my brain associations within my own head, thank-you-very-much.  Speaking of heads, take a look…

FEEDING the anxiety

I’m notoriously an emotional eater.  I find comfort in food, and I know it is a slippery slope. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve quit trying to fight the desire to eat for comfort and have just tried to make better “comfortable” choices.  Politics being what they are in the U.S. would understandably drive anyone to drink, but I have resorted to guava.  Guava is my tropical fruit therapy, and then, of course, there’s art.  This next Call wants your political art.  Take a look…
