My grandma says you should never talk about money, politics or religion in polite company. So all I’m going to say about war is that MRE’s (meals ready to eat) sound really unappealing to me. I hear MREs have come a long way; however, I remain unconvinced that I would appreciate them, despite their convenience. I DO, although, believe art is an excellent way to make your opinion know about money, politics OR religion. This next Call for Entries from Davis Art Services gives you a chance to get everything off your chest if you want.

Check out this Call for Entries for End of an Empire organized by Davis Art Services. The entry fee is a low $25 for up to 5 images on a theme that can be harder to place in a more general show. If you’ve got something to say about war, say it now.

CALL for ENTRIES: End of an Empire

Davis Art Services is currently organizing “End of an Empire”, a juried group show of anti-war art, which will open June 23 in North Adams, running for two months in a temporary space.

ELIGIBILITY: All artists 18 years and older

THEME: This show will feature artwork critical of wars the United States has conducted since the end of the Cold War. They are interested in artwork dealing with specific conflicts, or more general themes.

My kitchen cupboard is like the United Nations of spice racks. I love challenging my taste buds by experimenting with tastes and flavors that have not been a natural part of my cultural experience. As you know, I live in the Great Smoky Mountains where Thai food is considered a really exotic experience… so I value my trips to larger metropolitan areas for food variety alone. Is it wrong that I want to enter this next show just so I might be able to grab some Ethiopian food on the way to the opening? I don’t think so either.

Viridian Artists, Inc. announces a call to all US and international artists working in 2D and 3D media for a juried art exhibition, June 28 – July 16, 2011 in New York, New York.

ELIGIBILITY: All artists

MEDIA: 2 and 3 dimensional art

DEADLINE: Friday, April 16, 2011

ENTRY FEE: Minimum entry fee is $40 for up to three entries and $5.00 for each additional entry. There is no limit to the number of entries. Make check or money order in US$ payable to VIRIDIAN ARTISTS INC. All entry fees are nonrefundable.

JUROR: Elisabeth Sussman, Curator, Whitney Museum. Sussman’s Gordon Matta-Clark: “You Are the Measure” was awarded the AICA award for best monographic show in New York (2007-08). She has organized many other Whitney exhibitions including Remote Viewing: Invented Worlds in Recent Painting and Drawing (2005); Mike Kelley: Catholic Tastes (1991); Nan Goldin: I’ll Be Your Mirror (1996), with David Armstrong; Keith Haring (1997); and the Museum’s 1993 Biennial Exhibition.

Sussman co-curated two exhibitions on the work of Eva Hesse, one of Hesse’s drawings with The Drawing Center, and another of her sculpture with The Jewish Museum, both in New York. For the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Sussman co-organized, with Renate Petzinger of the Museum Wiesbaden, a full retrospective on the work of Eva Hesse; the exhibition received AICA’s First Prize for the best monographic exhibition outside of New York in 2001 and 2002. For SFMOMA, Sussman also organized, with Sandra Phillips, a retrospective of the work of Diane Arbus, Diane Arbus: Revelation. The catalogue for the Arbus exhibition received the 2004 Infinity Award for Publication of the International Center of Photography. Sussman was a Fellow of the Rockefeller Foundation at the Rockefeller Study and Conference Center in Bellagio, Italy, in 1999, and a fellow at the Getty Research Institute in 2003. She is the author of many publications, including Lisette Model (Phaidon, 2001) and has contributed essays on Robert Gober for the Schaulager and on Lee Bontecou.

AWARDS: First Prize is $300; Second Prize is $200; Third Prize is $100. 25 artists’ work will be displayed in a group exhibition at VIRIDIAN gallery. An additional 25 artists’ work will be featured in an ongoing Power Point Presentation during the exhibition. All winners will be listed on the Viridian website.

I grew up with a single father from age 3 to 13, and it was a culinary adventure. One of my fondest memories is of weekend-long motorcycle trips when I was around 8. We’d climb on and hit the road. I would freeze in the morning early-morning air. My father’s solution? We’d stop at every other golden arches we could find for french fries and hot fudge sundaes. This next Call is a whole different way to celebrate two-wheeled freedom.

CALL for ENTRIES: Thunder at CAM

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists—painters, sculptors, photographers and printmakers—over 18 years of age. Artists are invited to submit up to three original works of art on any theme related to motorcycles. Works selected by jurors from submitted entries will be chosen on the basis of creative excellence and quality of execution. All works must be original and completed within the last two years. Coos Art Museum’s “Thunder at CAM – Motorcycles and Art” jurors will be the final authority on eligibility. Accepted works meant for wall hanging must be ready with all necessary hardware in place.

JURORS: Susan Lehman, Oregon artist and art educator, began life-long passion for motorcycles that began with her first ride on the back of a restored 1951 Vincent Black Shadow. Fans of British café-style racers, she and her husband have owned and ridden dozens of motorcycles. Susan’s formal art training was at California College of Arts in Oakland, CA. She has co-produced two juried art exhibitions for the museum.

Philip Koenen, Since an early age, Philip has had two passions; motorsports and film making. Among the founding students of the now famous Dodge College of Film and Media Arts at Chapman University, Philip was asked to join the Eisaman, Johns & Laws advertising agency to work on the U.S. Suzuki motorcycle account and later to be the Executive Producer for their Film and Television Department. In 1983, he joined the Stunt Driving Team, Driver’s Inc. the clientele of which included Ferrari, Jaguar, Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki and Yamaha. In 1984 he left advertising to follow his passion for building and restoring automobiles. Today Philip continues to successfully operate Grand Touring Garage with a worldwide clientele.

Christiaan “Dutch” Mostert, is an internationally recognized watercolor artist. Born in Holland he received early training from his artist father. A full-time freelance artist since 1978, his travels through Europe, Africa the Middle East and the Pacific Rim countries have provided him with a wealth of subject matter for his works. Though known for marine subjects Dutch has also developed a love of classic vehicles.

Mike Boyle, is an avid collector of vintage Motorcycles. He began restoring cars and motorcycles in 1964. For 32 years he owned and operated a large repair and restoration business in San Diego. Since his move to Coos Bay in 2006 he does restoration work only on his own collections of cars and motorcycles.

Michael Holm, works primarily in digitally manipulated photography, printmaking and design. He has had a life-long interest in motorcycles. Mike received a BA in Art and photography from the University of California, Santa Cruz. He has been instrumental in the upcoming exhibition of motorcycles and motorcycle art.

AWARDS: First Place Award will receive cash prize of $500, Second Place Award will receive cash prize of $350, Third Place Award will receive cash prize of $250 and Four Honorable Mention ribbons will also be awarded.

SALES: Works in the exhibition may be available for sale. Artist agrees to donate 30% of any sale as commission to Coos Art Museum.

As much as I love food, I truly despise making the decision about what to eat meal after meal. And no one, except my 11 year old, will say what they really want to eat. CALL for ENTRIES: 2011 Sequim Arts Juried Show

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all adult artists. All work must be original in interpretation and composition, not copied from copyright or published art or executed in a supervised class.

MEDIA: Two-dimensional art such as, but not limited to oil, acrylic, water media, mixed media, original prints, collage, pastel, photography, drawing, and assemblage. Three-dimensional art such as, but not limited to sculpture (any medium), basketry, ceramics, glass, jewelry, and textiles.

DEADLINE: March 7, 2011

NOTIFICATION: Notification of accepted work will be mailed on March 25, 2011. Acceptance letters will include instructions for both hand delivered and shipped delivery of work.

JUROR: Mike McCollum was born in Hoquiam, Washington but acquired many of his artistic sensibilities from the San Francisco Bay Area. “While at UC Berkeley I apprenticed with Peter Voulkos assisting him with 3 major outdoor sculptures.”

“Abstract expressionism is one of my primary influences and I am enamored with the idea of ‘arriving at’ rather than ‘aiming at.’ I want to surprise myself. My job as an artist is to make decisions–what to leave in and what to take out. I see art as a process of reduction–getting rid of the chaff and striving for the essence of the idea. In my career I have worked in many mediums — bronze, ceramics, drawing, painting, printmaking and wood. I start with a basic idea and then it’s a matter of rescuing that idea from all the contrived directions it may take me.”

ABOUT SEQUIM ARTS: Sequim Arts is a non-profit arts organization located on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington state, with Mount Olympus to the south and Victoria, British Columbia across the Strait of Juan de Fuca to the north. Dena Beard is Curatorial Assistant at the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive (BAM/PFA). For the MATRIX program at BAM/PFA she assists with the production of site-specific projects by national and international emerging artists.

Independently, she curated the Lending Library exhibition series in Oakland and San Francisco. Dena is currently working on Take Up Room on the Floor, a project about physical and virtual embodiment, and a solo exhibition featuring the artist Lutz Bacher. Prior to joining the staff at BAM/PFA, Dena was Curatorial Associate at the Santa Barbara Contemporary Arts Forum. My family is on a savings spree. We sat down the first week of the year and decided on goals for the year. Many of those goals require cash. Cash necessitates saving. Saving, in my house, means cutting the food budget. Grocery shopping is now preceeded by a menu and detailed grocery list and eating out has been cut to one sit-down meal and one fast-food meal a week. This next Call gives you an opportunity to plan ahead.

This Call for Entries is for the 13 Sugarloaf Fine Art & Crafts festivals. I don’t publish many festival calls, but Sugarloaf is among the country’s finest. Take a look, and find a festival for you…or enter them all.

CALL for ENTRIES: Sugarloaf Festivals

Sugarloaf Crafts Festival, one of the nation’s most popular and most recognized juried shows of contemporary crafts and fine art, is now accepting applications from artists for its 2011 shows.

MEDIA: Artists may apply for the 2011 shows in categories including ceramics and pottery, fiber and fashion, fine art, furniture, blown and leaded glass, leather, metalsmithing, photography and functional and decorative wood crafts. Sugarloaf is no longer accepting applications for jewelry artists for Spring 2011 shows. Jewelry remains open for Fall 2011.

ABOUT SUGARLOAF: Sugarloaf enters its 36th year among the most respected shows in the country. In 2010, nine of Sugarloaf’s 13 shows were ranked in the Top 200 nationally by Sunshine Artist magazine.

When you think of North Carolina, what food comes to mind? I instantly think vinegar-based barbeque; however, this blog has been awash with pit-smoked references lately. So, I turned to my friend Michelle, a fellow blogger and Foreign Service officer for a little help. She is getting her doctorate from UNC. She says the best sushi place ever is a little place called Akai Hana and just happens to be outside of Chapel Hill in Carrboro, NC. This next Call might end in a great sushi dinner if you play your cards right.

Juried Exhibitions Series

The Chapel Hill Public Arts Office invites artists to apply for the 2011 – 2012 Juried Exhibitions Series. Original two- and three-dimensional artwork by selected artists will be displayed in Chapel Hill Town Hall and possibly other Town cultural facilities beginning May 2011.

Selected artists will be invited to exhibit their work in small group shows of two or three artists for two-month exhibition periods. The Juried Exhibitions Series is promoted in the local media and through Public Arts Office announcements and press releases. Selected artists will be asked to provide specific information and deliver their work for installation at agreed upon times. Public Arts staff and contractors install the work for exhibition.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists creating original artwork that can be hung indoors or displayed in glass cases.

There is no fee to enter.

Images submitted should be representative of the type of work proposed for exhibition.

Annotated Image List – A word file (.doc or .docx) listing JPEG images by two-digit identification number, followed by artist, title of work depicted, media, and dimensions (width by length in inches).

Resume – A word file (.doc or .docx) providing resume, no longer than two pages.

JURY PROCESS: An Artist Selection Committee comprising representatives of Chapel Hill Town Hall, the Chapel Hill Public Arts Commission, the Public Arts Office, and local artists will review all complete portfolios and select artists to participate in the 2011 – 2012 Juried Exhibitions Series. Selections are based on artistic excellence and the goal of exhibiting a variety of media. I love the hand-technique and the personal aspect of work in which you can see the artist’s hand. I don’t need or want perfection. I want to be amazed by talent and patience and thought and creativity. This month’s artist challenges me. AAAD is happy to feature the work of book carver Julia Feld. Feld’s work reminds all of the wonder found in books…words AND illustrations. So many people dismiss the work of illustrators. I find Feld’s work is entirely her own while at the same time, it celebrates the work of illustrators, past and present.

Julia Feld is a scientist and artist living and working in St. Louis. All pieces featured on her Holey Stokes! blog are her intricate creations and must be seen to be believed.

Feld has no formal art instruction and accidentally ended up as a book carver.

A few years back, she found a set of Funk and Wagnalls Encyclopedias in the free box outside a used book shop. “I didn’t know what I’d do with them but thought it was a pity that such a lovely set of books could end up in a dirty cardboard box in a parking lot, so I brought them home.”

“I really don’t remember what was going through my head the first time I thought to go at one with an exacto knife. I do what I do because I like reminding people that books are things of beauty and that pictures and diagrams aren’t just about the information they convey.”

There is a cult-like following of Julia Feld’s work online, and a popular myth that I see over and over is that she laser cuts her shapes and images. False. She hand cuts every shape.

“For some books, I carve through a page at a time, removing all the text and empty space and leaving only pictures and outlines. For others, I gut the entire contents and rebuild it from scratch. They all involve a ton of exact-o blades, tweezers, glue, and framing glass. I’ve tried using power tools, but haven’t been pleased with the outcomes.”

I enjoy asking artists about their terminology for their process and media. I find that it often gives me insight as to the frequent disconnect of an artist from the public perception of his or her work.

Altered books have a long-documented history in traditional art settings as mixed media, but I find that media are becoming more and more specific over time. Feld considers her work book carvings, but when I asked her for the school of art into which her work fit, she defers the questions to you, my loyal readers: “I am overwhelmed by the amount of research I’d have to do to answer this question properly. I like carving books because it draws attention to the aesthetic quality of objects that are usually valued primarily for their informational content. Gentle readers, using the comment section below, please share with me what school of art do you think this falls into!”

So, back to the armchair psychology of it all… Feld’s Favorite Food? Toast. No really… toast. I would NEVER think of asking an artist if they have a back-up plan just in case art doesn’t work out. I’m not your momma; you don’t need something to fall back on with me.
Nonetheless, Feld is prepared. “I want to open and operate a dining establishment called Julia’s Toasteraunt (maybe Julia’s Toastorium) where every table has a really nice toaster on it and you order big spreads of different kinds of breads and jams and cheeses and everyone feasts on toast. If someone wants to open a soup joint next store, I’d be open to that.” Editor’s Note: I will offer this blog and the transcripts of my interview with Julia Feld as evidence if you steal her idea, people.

I felt a little like I was looking through the keyhole into a mad scientist’s laboratory (in the nutty, harmless 1950s definition of “mad”) during the discovery of Julia’s work. Loved the adventure.

I love a good project. Sometimes to get myself out a artistic funk, I need a small-scale, end-in-sight, easily-finishable project to get my juices flowing again. The holiday food fest has put my food palate into a funk, and I’m hoping grilled lemon tilapia will solve that problem. Maybe yesterday’s Shooz call and this next call will be the solution to the artistic funk.

The Los Angeles Brain Bee invites artists from all areas of study to enter the Neuroscience Art contest. Artists are asked to submit their work on the theme: Neuroscience and Magic. This theme is in honor of guest speakers Stephen Macknik and Susana Martinez-Conde who recently published the book Sleights of Mind: What the Neuroscience of Magic Reveals about our Everyday Deceptions.

Artists are encouraged to express their creativity to represent the relationship between the brain and magic. Artists are encouraged to collaborate with individuals knowledgeable in neuroscience for factual detail and analysis, however their own interpretation of Magic and the Brain is acceptable without scientific validity. The objective is to highlight how deceptions of magic can parallel deception in our daily lives.

ELIGIBILITY: All ages are able to enter. Artists of all nationalities may enter. Group entries are allowed but a single member should be nominated as the leader and their name will be used as the name of the Group. Works presented need not be newly created. The work may be a project consisting of multiple images or elements.

MEDIA: Entries will be accepted in three categories: two-dimensional, three-dimensional, and digital. Entries will be evaluated on creativity and artistic qualities.

DEADLINE: January 22, 2011

NOTIFICATION: Winners announced January 28, 2011.

JURY: The members of the Jury are chosen by the Los Angeles Brain Bee productions and are leaders in the field of art and communication. The Jury’s decisions will be final and no correspondence will be entered into.

Adherence to the theme, artistic quality, research and innovation are the basic criteria for selecting the winner and finalists. All entries will be shown at the Los Angeles Brain Bee exhibition and may be invited for other Los Angeles Exhibitions.

AWARDS: Selected works will be chosen for the Los Angeles Brain Bee exhibits at Los Angeles City College, it may also be used at a Local Los Angeles Gallery ZZyzx Gallery of Natural Science and for other Educational Brain Events across the Los Angeles Area. Cash prizes and certificates: Top cash award $500, Smaller cash awards, Honorable Mention, Certificates of Achievement.

WHAT IS THE BRAIN BEE? The Brain Bee is a program designed especially to stimulate high school students to learn about neuroscience; as such, competitors are required to be currently enrolled in a high school program – grades 9 through 12. (Age limit does not apply to art contest competitors.) No student is allowed to participate in more than one Local Brain Bee each school year, and students are only allowed to compete in the International Brain Bee Championship once.

CALL for ENTRIES:
Rosen Outdoor Sculpture Competition

The Rosen Outdoor Sculpture Competition & Exhibition is a national juried competition presented annually by the Turchin Center for the Visual Arts on the campus of Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina.

Made possible by the generosity of longtime arts supporters Martin & Doris Rosen, this national, juried competition continues a long-held tradition of showcasing the best of large-scale, contemporary American sculpture. Each year, 10 sculptures are selected and are situated in outdoor, public settings across campus. A cash prize is awarded to the artist whose work is chosen as that year’s Rosen Award winner.

Since its establishment in 1987, The Rosen has become an integral part of An Appalachian Summer Festival, the university’s annual multi-arts celebration, with the announcement of the Rosen Award winner coming during the festival’s annual Sculpture Walk with that year’s juror.

ELIGIBILITY: The 25th Rosen Outdoor Sculpture Competition and Exhibition is open to artists currently residing in the US and at least 18 years of age. Artists exhibited in previous Rosen Competitions are not eligible to enter for three years. Previous recipients of the Martin and Doris Rosen Award are not eligible to enter for five years.

DEADLINE: February 12, 2011

NOTIFICATION: March 9, 2011

ENTRY FEE: $20 non-refundable entry fee

AWARDS: Ten finalists will be selected for installation on the Appalachian State University’s (ASU) campus. All finalists, whose works are installed on campus, will receive a $1,000 honorarium. The Rosen Sculpture Competition will provide installation equipment and will cover the cost of installation and lodging during installation and de-installation.

One artist will be named as the Martin & Doris Rosen Award Winner and will receive a cash prize of $5,000 plus a weeklong residency with additional stipend, within ASU’s Department of Art during the 2011-2012 academic year. Awards and Honoraria total $16,500.

In addition, the Rosen Sculpture Competition is a featured exhibition offering a printed catalog, audio tour powered by Guide By Cell, sales program, optional insurance coverage & archives on the competition’s website.
